  • James Edward Ingram (February 16, 1952 - January 29, 2019) was an American singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. He was a two-time Grammy Award-winner and a two-time Academy Award nominee for Best Original Song.
Ingram, an Ohio native, got his start as a musician with the band Revelation Funk and later played keyboards for Ray Charles. He was nominated for 14 Grammy Awards, winning for best male R&B performance for his song "One Hundred Ways" in 1981 and best R&B performance for a duo or group in 1984 for "Yah Mo B There."
His duet with Patti Austin, "How Do You Keep the Music Playing," earned an Oscar nomination for best original song in 1983.
Ingram was also nominated for two Golden Globe Awards -- one in 1994 for best original song for "The Day I Fall in Love" and again in the same category the following year for "Look What Love Has Done."
He co-wrote Michael Jackson's hit song "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" with Quincy Jones.
James Ingram visited the TopPop studios in Hilversum, the Netherlands twice in 1983.
He performed ‘Party Animal’ from his 1983 album ‘It’s Your night’ on 28 October 1983
Earlier that year, on 19 February 1983 he performed his duet with Patti Austin ‘Baby Come To Me’ for the TopPop cameras.
"Baby, Come to Me" is a love ballad from Patti Austin's 1981 album Every Home Should Have One, sung as a duet by Austin and James Ingram. It was written by Rod Temperton (formerly of Heatwave). The song was released as a single in April 1982, peaking at #73 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, several months later the popular American soap opera General Hospital began to feature the song heavily, as the love theme for the character Luke Spencer. The single was re-released in October 1982, and reached #1 on the chart in February 1983.

I went to high school with Patti In Bay Shore, NY, and sat next to her in choir class taught by Miss Ough. In addition, I performed with her in couple musicals we put on in the high school auditorium. Not once have I ever heard her warble off-key, screech or whisper. The woman SINGS! She's hysterically funny and very humble. She was jetting off all over the world in the late 60s...winning international awards, going to Hollywood (if I remember correctly, Quincy Jones is her godfather) and never dropped names or bragged about it. Her parents were great people also. I saw her perform a number of years ago at a jazz club in Seattle and went backstage to say "hello" and we immediately started laughing and joking around as if we'd not been in touch for decades! She's a class act.
