I used to own one of these in the 80s. Gigged around L.A. with it. I boosted it with either an original MXR Distortion Plus, ProCo Rat, Tube Screamer or Boss SD-1. Sounded fantastic, much like this. Well, you've got to hear one in person to hear how great they sound. And loud as hell. I set it on about 2 and a half at gigs.
God what the boost does a difference to the 2203..... Long I was astonished by the common knowledge that Angus Youngs Back in Black sound was " SG straight into JMP 2204 etc" , til I got to learn about the Shaffer Vega Diversity wireless system, providing massive clean boost plus compression....!

I have never let him forget what a dumbass move that was. The 2203 just had the sound. We liked it most with a Yamaha distortion pedal. He plays country now thru a Carr amp with a Tele. I am the only one of us that still plays metal and rock. Another muso friend plays acoustic folk and blues with his missus, another has become a jazz nerd, and another one who was probably the best player of all of us recently announced to us on FB he is now a she. Crazy world. That Suhr RL sounds good. I have a Torpedo Captor. I am not sure it would sound that good. You could do a shoot out video huh? I am in the market for an amp now. I sold my Laney IRT Studio. NZ, so not many options used and new prices here are a fair bit higher than EU or USA. A JCM800KK just listed, but I think I will wait for something else. Can't play much right now because I did myself an injury trying to go up to 10s.
@@yeti1002 I think the first gen JCM 2000 DSL 100 ranks as one of their worst. I had one. It went up in smoke, which blew the power transformer and burned the PCB. A common problem caused by a thing called bias drift. It turned out the PCB design was defective, so the traces leaked and shorted. The tech fixed it by cutting the traces in that part of the circuit and hand wiring it. He called it 'lifting the circuit'. Marshall fixed the issue in a later revision, so most techs just replace the boards with the newer version now. It was not just that amp. Some TSLs also had the issue. The JTM 30 and 60 was another. Similar happened with a brand new 1959RR head I had. It went up in smoke about a week after it arrived here in NZ. So much damage they gave me a refund. A pity, because I never got to hear what one in good order sounded like. Marshall during late 80s thru to early 2000s had lots of tech issues. Mostly sorted out now. The Vietnam stuff made on the cheap is generally very reliable too, because the design and the components they spec are so much better. Saving a few pennies for cheaper components and PCB is just not worth it in the long run is what I think they must have worked out. They began cheaping out in the late 80s (some might argue it was the mid 70s though). Not just Marshall either. For example, look at how few Peavey Bandit amps from that early 90s era survived. Good little solid state amps, but not built to last.

Then a JTM 50, an now a JMP 50 1987 spec. I think only the chassis remains original. Marstran PT and OT. Mustard caps etc. A beast. My Two Notes Captor 8 can not cope with all the power it puts out. Not sure how I am going to resolve that. Better reactive load, or tame the amp with power scaling etc. I ended up putting a Marshall 2525H on lay-by instead for now. Stuff keeps coming up, so it will not be paid off by Xmas. Will be a New year prezzie to myself instead. I like how the Silver Jube goes with a TubeScreamer and hot PAF style pups. Nice 80s shred tone.

I'm thinking about ordering the the new rev 20 pcb board which is an upgrade from the original or use the head shell for custom build .. Or throw down on a ceriatone lot of choices from the ceriatone hot rodded and classic British series to pick from . Can't make up my mind , but affordable , best bang for $$ . Wait build time time at least 9 months .. Marshalls amps, some bad , some great and on reverb there asking serious $$$ for a 70s jmp , jcm 800 and Plexi . I don't have a problem with a clone .. I'm poor . Thanks for the info ...

i tried this settings on my jcm 900 mk iii (poor mans jcm 800) and they sounded amazing ... boss sd1 jcm and a vintage 30 cab ir ... instante alice in chains
@Mark Baldwin I have an '81 JCM 800 50 watt. I always used an old Marshall 4x12 with Greenbacks. Guitars had passive Duncans: JB, Distortion, Custom Custom, APH. The only boost I ever used was an old blue MXR 6-band EQ. I am obviously not dialing it in right, mine always seemed a bit too bright and gainy.
Depends on personal taste. Plenty of people don’t like the custombuckers. They’re very bright and alive, yet low output so open sounding. If you’re more into the heavy stuff they may not work
Nothing like The original sounds of those artists. Records are only about 5% of the real sounds. Only the artist has heard the missing 95% . CD amplifiers take 1 hour and 20 minutes to warm up and produce a consistent tone. Nobody can hear the les paul in the streaming version of Alice in chains face lift. The tiny components actually drop the guitar from the recording. CD is a REVERSE amplifier. Lazer is a current amplifier. That's the opposite amplifier to high fidelity.

It's interesting like the od 808 didn't alter the character of the natural distortion from the amp. Or at least it is what my ears noticed

Only the box it's in. The amp is the same, at least up to 1985. After that the filtering changed.

Depends on personal taste. Plenty of people don’t like the custombuckers. They’re very bright and alive, yet low output so open sounding. If you’re more into the heavy stuff they may not work
