These moss poles have to go! | Plant Chores | Philodendron & Epipremnum

- G'day, guys! Today, we jump into some plant chores and I give the chop to a bunch of my sphagnum moss poles including my Philodendron hederaceum, Philodendron cordatum, Philodendron 'Brazil', and Epipremnum aureum 'Snow Queen' or 'Njoy' Pothos.

I live in a dry climate so I propped my brazil philodendron on the moss pole as an experiment. Here are what I learn so far:
1. I start with a fairly young stem with about 2-3 nodes and good root system. The reason is the older nodes won't latch into the moss pole as easily as the new node when the aerial roots are young.
2. I cling wrap the portion of the pole where the plant didn't reach yet, AND wrap the nodes onto the pole to encourage high humidity.
3. I made my potting mix with a high ratio of sand, pumice and bark nuggets, so it retains even less moisture. This allows me to water the moss pole whenever it is dry (about 2-3 times a week with cling wrap and in a windy weather)
4. After 3 months, my philo brazil reached about half of a 90 cm pole. Most of the new growth have successfully developed roots into the moss pole. When I repot, the soil roots look healthy but didn't grow as massively, and I suppose it directs its energy to grow roots into the moss pole instead.
5. The leaves are still fairly smaller than the original ones. I'm pinching the tip to stop it growing vertically to see it there is any effect on branching and rooting.
FYI, mass polls have to maintain some level of moisture. They don’t have to be wet, but they do need to be moist from inside out. It encourages the roots to search for the moisture. For the few plants, I keep on moss poles, I use water globes to water the moss pole. I’ve also experimented with using a water bottle with holes in the top and then open at the back so I can easily water them. I also make sure that the bottom of my mass pole is above my soil line. That way the excess moisture doesn’t get into the soil and cause a lot of extra moisture at the roots, it does have more airflow

I enjoyed this longer video. In the UK the pruners are called secateurs. Look forward to seeing what happens with all those cuttings. I watch Sydney Plant Guy and his plants are amazing. I agree that as well as his obvious skill, environment must be a big factor in his success. Very inspiring though.

It really helps the Sydney Plant Guy that he lives in the coastal areas of Sydney. The climate in Sydney is subtropical. A lot of tropical plants can be grown outside in gardens in Sydney. It never gets cold enough for frost.
I live in the elevated area west of Sydney and I don’t have anything like his growth. Mostly because of the cooler temperatures.

Hey bud I’m new here but I will say I have vines that our 40 feet on a Pothos plant. She has about 20 vines that hang over the 2nd story that go down and up a few times. Anyways I have this poll and I thought it was okay till I made it better. Pole coco is cheap. Get a 4ft fat PVC pipe a thick one. Drill 3 different size holes all going inward angle 📐. Helps with water and roots and most of all air. The coco is for looks until summer and then I break out the spray bottle and hit it often till the end of summer. Pour water right down the pvc. New growth will take over the pvc. Anyways Air is the key. Try drilling some holes in the one you got. Would love to see this build of your version.
There is a product called anti-root fabric you use outdoors. It will allow water through but no roots. Maybe you can use that in stead of the mesh. Otherwise use a slightly larger mesh size so you can pull the roots out when repotting

🌻 Treat your moss pole as you would any other potting media. Misting the top of a pot of soil doesn’t encourage good root growth. Similarly, misting the surface of a moss pole also doesn’t encourage good root growth. The moss needs to be saturated with misting only being used to keep the moss slightly damp in between waterings. 😊

My 2 heart leaf philo are so overgrown with small trellis in the pot - I’ve never used moss poles but I’ve been curious to try them after some pruning/propagation! Wish me luck. Thank you for this video! Best wishes from the US :)
I love experimenting with props too, I usually just sell small pots for a couple of bucks in the summers when I’m overrun with them 😅

All these philodendrons grow so fast even during our Melbourne weather. But I am with you, I don't have any room for them on my moss poles. I have others I prefer to try to size up like my P. majestic, manjula, syngonium frosted heart and so on :) I have my P. Brasil on a big round trellis and as it fills it up it's pretty nice. They really are cool plants to have in darker corner of the house. Happy Friday Pete ;)

I'm a Brit, they call them Secateurs here as well. Over here the snow queen is like the marble queen, the plant you have there is the njoy pothos.
Yeah, I often get confused when I hear people referring to the Marble Queen as a Snow Queen. Guess it's all arbitrary naming haha
Hope you're feeling better soon Pete. Have to love those common 'expendable' plants, so useful for learning the ropes and experimenting with new techniques, and they really do brighten up a room without too much effort or expense. I think I remember Jan (Sydney plant guy) saying he just waters the moss poles when they're crunchy, he sticks water bottles with small holes in the lid in the top and lets them do their thing. I'm doing that as per his advice but yeah I think it comes down to trial and error to figure out what works for you and I'm still in the error bit.
Yeah, I've been doing the same, though I've found smaller plants have a harder time grabbing onto the poles even when moistened well. Might just have to size up a bit first, I guess.

I prefer growing heart leaf philo,brasil and njoy pothos as trailing plants. I do have another brasil growing up a pole as well and have had a very small amount of success sizing up leaves.

Have you ever tried experimenting with putting a pothos cutting in with another type of cutting? The theory is that pothos have particularly good natural rooting hormone and will help "boost" new root growth
Not specifically like that yet at least. I've had pothos cuttings mixed in with other stuff before, and I've had loads of M. siltepecana rooting together that I've added things to to speed things up and it's worked well.
Don't stop testing - I was coughing for 3 days before my test was positive, same with my partner and my brother I. You might have Covid but the tests are still negative during the first couple days :)
Also props for not throwing the glass out - if it's broken but still can be used, it's not broken, haha.

That's what I notice that my Philodendron brazil and hederaceum grow nicer hanging, And only my Pothos grows up a moss pole🙏😌I enjoyed watching

When I do a bunch of cuttings in one vase, I like to strap them together. You can also split them in 2 or more bundles. Is easyer to handle, and potting up. :)
Ah good idea. What do you use to strap them together?
I’ve started propping with one or two pothos cuttings and they root much faster. Apparently pothos secretes a higher level of rooting hormone than other indoor plants.

thank you (again) for your videos. I continue to learn so much and my plants seem to like the changes.
I finally gave sphagnum moss a go and got a small 100g block (4.5L) and was wondering if it's normal it smells like hay and has visibly dried grass in it? It also seems darker than the moss I've seen on several videos or pictures. Generally I wouldn't mind if it's a mix of several things, but it triggers my pollen allergy and I got really itchy. 😅Not sure if I want several poles of allergens around my apartment.
I'm thinking it might be a mix of several dried up things because the pack I got is labeled for terrarium use. If you say "no, that's not how it should be", I definitely go and order some better quality moss because I really want my plants to be happy and have poles I can actually water. 😅

Haha yes, it smells that way for me at times. If you're worried, just boil it for 10 minutes or so and see if that washes away any particles that might be in it. I think I'd have to see it to be sure and even then I've only got experience with my particular brand that's found at Bunnings, so it might just be moss from a different brand and or place than where mine comes from? Dunno. Good luck hehe

You have to keep the inside of the moss pole moist not just the outside. The plants roots will search for the water at causing the routes to embed into your moss pole. Also, try Potting multiple varieties of plants in one pot .

Pete, I use a large spread of different pots just out of pure convivence. My pots with large drainage holes, I tend to use sphagnum and large orchid bark to block the hole from spilling soil. I will use window/door mesh, like you, but mostly for my bonsai. I'm not too worried about cutting away some roots, but I try to hold off on repotting until the plant is rootbound. Probably just desensitized by the bonsai hobby...
Ah very clever. I'll have to give that a try. I need to learn more about Bonsai as I'm sure there's a lot you learn there that can be applied here.

If you watch Plants by Melissa she uses watering globes in the top of her moss poles and they drip down into the moss pole to keep them moist
Yeah, I've seen this. I effectively do the same thing with bottles of water but take them away and only do it twice a week or so depending on how dry the poles get.
I have an empty drink bottle with a hole in the lid and a wick made from thick cotton string. I tip it upside down in my moss pole and it slowly drips and wets the moss entirely.

Hi, your Philodendron cordatum is hederaceum. Hederaceum is often sold under a lot of names. Cordatum is very different

I think most Monstera adansonii in Australia are Monstera adansonii laniata (not considered a true species for the moment) but in Europe it's an undescribed species close to lechleriana, and you probably have one if you have a variegated "adansonii". In Asia it's even another species sold as adansonii.
Does it have a decidious petiole sheat?
I've got about 5-6 adansonii variants. I think there're definitely some with the sheaths.
Is your moss pole made with metal hardware cloth and Spaghnum Moss ?????
Yeah, it's fencing mesh that's about 1x1cm and sphagnum moss yep
If the vine rooted into the soil, what is the benefit to cutting in between the nodes?
Each node will sprout out its own growth point and so you'll end up with loads of vines instead of just one.

@@petevsplants7516 Marble Queens over here have the yellow variegation - snow queens have white - there is a french etsy seller that has both along with the harlequin pothos 😍 Only other name I've heard for the Snow Queen is White panther :) Edited due to lack of coffee lol

Hey Susie, mainly as I want a really bushy pot. I think most of those poles only had 2-3 vines, so it'd be straggly as for a while if I potted it up I think.
