Thank you so much for creating and posting this tutorial. I 100% agree with you and warn all viewers not to use the plastic anchors. I live in Australia and purchased a system from our major hardware chain which looks 95% similar to the Rubbermaid system you used here, using the wall anchors. I installed it 7 - 8 years ago. Unfortunately, I just noticed that the vertical braces and the top rail had come away from the wall, with only the residual friction of the some screws (now at sloping down approx. 45 degrees) in their holes & those which had not snapped their anchor stopping the system from crashing to the floor. In each case the front section of the (useless) plastic anchors which you show at 8.45 had snapped off from the rear section and hence the screws lost all purchase on the wall. Now having cleared all the shelves I am setting about re-installation, so I'll now go with your spring toggles. Your video is a godsend. Thank you, again!
Great tutorial! Installed the Configurations system yesterday and your video made is so much easier. Referenced it a few times throughout the process to make sure I was on track. And thanks for the tip on using longer bolts or screws to secure the uprights. Fantastic video!
Great Tutorial! This helped me so much to see the tools needed and how to use them. I just installed one of these kits into my closet and referred back to your video when doing so. You are right that the plastic wall anchors in the kit are quite inferior to the metal toggle bolt you showed. I struggled with the plastic anchors and had to use needle nosed pliers to pinch it closed and hold it steady while hammering it into the wall. I screwed the rail into wood studs at five points and the system seems secure for hanging clothes and shoes.
Thanks for your time preparing this tutorial👍🏼 I’ve just bought a home and I have a walk closet that I’ve been looking for a closet organization kit and I came across this one on Amazon and decided to check UA-cam on how to install this was the best tutorial by far! Gonna purchase and see how it goes😊
Great info - appreciate the specifics as you discussed (molly bolts, length of screws, etc.) It seems my original installer of many years ago may not have secured the wall tracks to hold the various shelves appropriately. Any suggestion as to how i can better secure them to the wall without removing them - i.e. add 1-2 screws through tracks already on wall?
Is there a way to stabilize the shelf-supporting backets? I wasn't really satisfied with the amount of back and forth wiggle they have; was hoping they'd mate a little more solidly with the vertical uprights. Am I missing something?
Excellent video. It helped a lot. One question I have is - What is the best way to seal the surrounding area of toggle bolt screw. It’s really tough to get to behind the uprights through the tiny slots. I’m trying to prevent any air leaks from behind the wall into the closet.
I tried caulking the hole before fastening down toggle bolt. It was a bit messy. Results were mixed. May have worked better if allowed to dry before fastening, but who wants to wait that long lol. It is a difficult hole to seal!
What he said --> Save yourself some heartache and buy better drywall anchors before installing uprights! The ones provided are junk! One of mine pulled out of the wall and the upright was already hung- I was just snugging them up a bit. I have to take the whole rail down to install new anchors and make new holes in the drywall which, really isn't a problem but now the weight distribution is going to be a bit off (because the new holes are placed differently) than where I wanted them.
I have a #21640 closet maid. How/can I rearrange the shelving? I would really like 2 shelves all the way around. (I know I would have to buy more pieces. My closest is 5 feet by 27 inches (depth). 91 inches high.
FYI - The toggle bolts in the amazon link will not work with the new Rubbermaid Configurations kit-the head is too small! If you are going to use the ones from the link, you need to add a washer.
The magnetic stud finder is actually used to just wind the drywall screws that are attached to the wood studs. God question as that can be a bit confusing.
Great video! Thanks for the info. Little feedback/request: 5 minute or less video and I’d be more likely to click and watch the video in the moment instead of earmarking it for later. I’m not complaining as I enjoy long videos (such as this) for a detailed set up and installation. Keep up the content! We appreciate it!
Thanks for the feedback and you are right it is a balance for the length. I might experiment a bit more with a shorter highlights format which gives 75% of the content for those planning projects and just looking for ideas and then a longer form someone can actually follow during the install process which walks them through all aspects. Cheers
Great video - I need help... when I drilled into the wall it sounds like I am hitting a duct - light piece of aluminum is that possible? I am so afraid of making a bigger mess.
And my top rack didn't have all those hole options it only had 4 maybe 5 so I tried drilling to put anchors in each location. Thanks for anyone that can help.
Previous owner installed with just the little wall clips and the whole thing collapsed with about 15# on it. Trying to hang the rail now. I am going into old lather/plaster that has tub surround on the other side (no plumbing/elec) I got the 3" screws and can't get them all the way in, it's okay til the last 1/4" or so and it's like hitting steel. Not just on one, either. I am so frustrated with this whole project. Little dumb stuff all going wrong.
The 3" toggle bolts might be too long for the wall cavity. When you tighten the bolts the excess threads in the wall cavity could be hitting the back wall. Did you try 2.5" toggle bolts?
How would you build a shelf with two by fours and plank wood wait 12345 sections holding 60 to 70 pounds old antique typewriters. I know how to build a cheap one but how would you make it look good with two by fours and plank wood you seem like a pretty knowledgeable guy a demonstration would be nice please with nails work or long to read it with nuts and washers I’m confused thank you Danny boy👀
The nail in anchor just expands around inside the hole making a good fit inside that hole, toggle bolts expand behind the wall grabbing more surface area. If you rip a mollie out of the wall, it leaves a slightly bigger hole than original, if you rip a toggle bolt out, expect to be patching drywall
I've been watching a great many of your tutorials/how tos. I was really hoping you had the answer to my dilemma. I was given shelves with the support brackets installed, I need to take them off to reposition. How in the heck do I get them off the wire Shelf? (‼️)

Hey George, actually I haven't given the metal ez anchors much or a chance since I have been burned so many times by the cheap plastic ones which come in some kits and snap off prior to being screwed flush with the drywall. I think I will grab some of the metal ez anchors and give them a shot on the next project as my biggest issue with the plastic versions should be solved by the metal. Question: What is your go to type of shelving for closets? Happy New Years!
@@EverydayHomeRepairs hey my friend, good to get your reply. Rubbermaid and Closet Maid seem to ‘own’ the market, and there is EZ shelf, but I know nothing about them. I have had to deal with the type you mentioned, with the insipid angle brackets, and they are junk! I prefer to use a system of ‘standards and brackets,’ and use 5/8 or 3/4 laminated shelving. RubberMaid and the like are based on the old ‘standards and brackets’ type of shelving. I prefer custom built in shelving, vs the wire type.
