    Oh my gosh!! I did this project and it turned out beautifully! It took a while for me to convince someone at Lowe's to cut the boards and trim...at first they said they couldn't do it but I said logically someone must cut these because who has use for an 8ft. board?? Once I got it home I followed your instructions and I could not be more pleased! You must be an amazing teacher because I usually have very little confidence in myself to complete home projects - your enthusiasm, clear instructions, and beautiful outcome convinced me to give it a shot. My closets look amazing, and are more functional without having to worry about smaller items falling between the wires!! Thank you so much!!

      You just made my day! Thank you for taking the time share your experience plus give others the confidence they need to try this project. Plus let others know sometimes you have to be firm with the Lowe's associate to get them to cut the closet boards. BTW I'm a Clemson Tiger and my mom was an elementary school teacher, so that might be why I like to teach :)

    A cheaper option is to use white poster board. It won’t be as nice, but could be a renter friendly option.

    What a great video! My best friend just purchased a starter home for her 22 year old son! What a great project for him to do and build up his diy skills. I’m a handyman and told him he has to learn but I’ll be near to assist. I think he can do this alone. 😊

    the Boards add quite a bit of weight to the shelf...then if you put heavy objects on it, it will likely pull the clips out of the wall. I prefer the wire shelves uncovered because adding boards inhibit air circulation , which most closets need more of, not less.

    • @ASouthernLadyinAppalachia
      @ASouthernLadyinAppalachia 3 місяці тому +1

      Yes the added weight will probably make them fail. I would rip out & just install wooden shelving. You only need to add the wooden supports to what she bought, make sure you screw it into 2x4’s behind the Sheetrock.

    If you want something cheaper and just practical just put self adhesive individual vinyl tiles on the shelves. Because most of us are not concerned with whether or not our closets are aesthetically pleasing.

    So funny I came across this. I have been planning on moving to this certain apartment building. I happen to know what the floor plan is.
    I also can't stand the metal shelves. I came up with the same idea. Making a wood cover to fit over each shelf.
    Yours is a lot easier. Thank you!

    Standard size laminate shelving will ONLY fit standard width wire shelves without cutting. Builders use wire because few closets are those standard multiples of 6" in width., and it's easier to cut them cleanly than saw laminated particleboard. IKEA sells rolls of heavy plastic that match the depth of standard wire shelves.

      I have wire cube shelves so that's more complex to cover up. I think I'd use corrogated cardboard covered in fabric with hot glue. Would be nice to have something to cover them up (it's for bathroom storage so not the most attractive to look at!)

    • @katheryn7258

      Doesn’t have to hold anything other than the trim on the front. The shelf takes the weight of whatever is on the shelf.

    This is great for tiny linen closets/tiny pantries… BUT I want to do this to my big closets and big pantry. How would I do that when those hold heavy things and require those angled brackets so heavy things can hold. I’ve had those wired ones go right through our walls in our closet bc our stuff was too heavy so I don’t know how I’d make sure they’d hold extra weight in a way I could do this easily and with no experience. 😅

    • @porchdaydreamer
      @porchdaydreamer  4 місяці тому +1

      I thought through that and decided I didn't want to disturb the tape on the shelves because I had to handle them to install. Plus I found it easier to line up the tape with the shelf while it was in place. Either approach will work 😁

    Honestly this is silly- you have now spent all that money on real shelving only to cut it and transpose it onto the cheap wire ones. At that rate for an extra few hundred dollars you could've just measured/bought the real closet shelving and had your husband or handyman install a real closet system that would support much more weight. Now the same cheap wire shelves have to support real shelves along with your belongings- makes the situation worse if you ask me. This is a NO for me.

    • @ruthresetar5940

      Sorry to hear that! Can you try a different Lowe’s? They can’t cut anything less than 16” off of anything due to safety guidelines. I had to step up to a really long board for that reason.
