  • How to make your own piping to use in your sewing projects.
    If your sewing machine didn't come with a piping foot, use your zipper foot. (Move your needle position as necessary to get your stitch line close to the piping)

    Watched video 7:14pm on 9/5. Thank you! I have bought some beautiful upholstery fabric to recover my sining room chairs. The seat back has a piped edge. Many I can do it now. Will practice ❤

    In another channel, an upholstery professional said to leave some slack between the seam and the cord, so when you sew the piping to the fabric that seam is hiden. I guess that requirement depends on project as well. Thanks for the tutorial.

    • @SpencerOgg
      @SpencerOgg  Рік тому

      Absolutely! When you stitch the piping into your project, you do want to make that line of stitching on or fractionally closer to the cord in the piping. I didnt include a full section on adding the piping to your project in this video, I might have to add a second video 😃.

    Thanks, very useful. I don't have a standard piping foot for my Janome but I do have the adjustable zipper /piping foot which should work well. If possible I'd love to see more of you adding the trimmed piping to projects.

    This may cause an eye-raise to many, but I really want to understand this. When you say, “if you need a 1/2” piping”, is the piping width suppose to match the seam allowance for the project? Also, is the cord supposed to be included in that width or just the fabric next to it. I hope that makes sense AND that this is not too stupid a question. Thank you for the video!

    • @SpencerOgg
      @SpencerOgg  2 роки тому +2

      Its not a daft question at all, I was thinking of maybe doing another video about that! It depends if you want the piping 1/2" in total or you want to use a seam allowance of 1/2".
      Make your piping up as shown, then if you need 1/2" piping, trim so the total width of the piping is 1/2". If you have something where you are required to have a 1/2" seam allowance, trim the piping so it measures 1/2" in width fromthe stitch line to the raw edge. Hope that helps

    I bought a piping foot for my overlocker (serger) and never looked back, it creates the piping and trims the edge at the same time.

    Can a zipper be installed with piping on either side? I like to make zipper bags/pouches and think it would look nice to have piping in contracting fabric along the sides of the zipper. I enjoyed your video.

    Well, the piping seemed to cover too much of the fabric you were adding it to because you had to fold so much of the brown fabric back after you added the piping. Boy, I hope that makes sense.

    • @SpencerOgg
      @SpencerOgg  12 днів тому

      Yes makes complete sense - I've left my piping wide so that you can see it extra clearly in this video, but try to explain at around 07:18 minutes that you trim it to the actual width you require before you add it to your project. You can make it as wide or as narrow as you wish according to your own chosen seam allowance. Hope that explains better :)
