  • Sewing piping into a seam is a great way to add some truly unique detail and a high end touch to your dressmaking and sewing projects. Sew it around armholes, necklines, princess seams or any seam where you would like some extra va va voom! It is also great for home dec projects such as sewing cushions and quilts or placemats for example. Piping can be sewn in a matching or contrasting colour and will draw the eye to this special little design feature you've added, therefore, in an ideal world, you want it to look neat and even. The best way to achieve this is by following my sewing tips shared in the tutorial - sewing the piping into the binding first then sewing it into your project using a piping foot on your sewing machine if possible. I also shares tips for sewing piping round curves and corners and what to do where seams cross to avoid unsightly bulk. You can find everything you need to add beautiful piping to your sewing projects on our website including bias binding, piping feet for a wide range of brands of sewing machines and piping cord and as always I've linked everything below for you. Happy piping!

A great tutorial Lucy. I've always shied away from doing piping even in the easiest of projects but now feel I can tackle it in the future. Thank you

Hi Lucy. Thanks for the tutorial! I wish I had found something like this 3 years ago, when I was learning to sew. One thing that as a beginner, that really confused me, was how important it is that the stitch line of the piping ends up on the actual seam line. Whether you buy ready made piping, or make your own like you did, the width isn't necessarily the same as your seam allowance. It wasn't mentioned in your video either. For example, the garment seam allowance might be 3/8 inch but the width of the piping fabric is 5/8 inch. If you place the raw edge of the fabric with that of the piping, the seam allowance will be off by 1/4 inch.

Excellent tutorial, Lucy! Piping isn't on my immediate agenda but I now feel that if/when at some future time I decide to give it a go, I have a good understanding of how to go about it. And who knew there was such a thing as a piping foot! 😯 Very informative 👍

I've been intrigued by piping but haven't tried it yet. It seems way less intimidating now with this great tutorial.

Great tutorial! One additional bit to include or to cover in an additional video is how to join ends of piping or welting as would need to be done around a pillow or a cushion. It's tricky to do so the joint is invisible.

I think many of us would benefit from a dark fabric being used against the machine / backgrounds used such as cutting mats etc.
