    Three great products from Switzerland:
    - chocolate
    - watch
    - ELUVEITIE :)
    "Hurdy gurdy" is a musical instrument based on the principle of stringed instruments, all strings of which are vibrated by rotating a sharpened wooden disc while playing the melody on the keyboard. Its characteristic sound is given by the constantly playing accompanying strings, the drone strings, and the special rhythmic sound of the scroller, the crackling sounds play an important role as well. An instrument from the 10th century from the Iberian Peninsula. Later in the Middle Ages it was often heard in temples.

  • @619Slipk
    @619Slipk Рік тому +3

    "That thing" is a Hurdy gurdy.
    The way it functions is you spin a wheel using a crank. There are strings (the number vary) stretched inside the instrument and the friction of the wheel on said strings produce a contant sound. Then, pressing the keys on the side of the instrument you can change the length of the strings, producing different sounds.
    So you end up with the notes connected by a continuous "neutral" sound
    She plays in a bit of a different way though, because the tempo of the song is way faster than what the instrument is originally designed for (specially during the solo). So instead of constantly spinning the crank in a single direction she goes back and forth with it (4:39)

    This song was my first introduction to the band. I saw that they where touring europe this fall with two other bands i like (lacuna coil and infected rain), decided to check them out before picking up tickets and a few songs in they became the band i look forward to the most to see live. This is a little heavier than some of their earlier songs, others are pure folk-metal where this is close to melodeath i guess. Some songs are even sung in Gaulish (extinct language that where spoken by the celtic tribes in mainland europe). The call of the mountain or Rose for Epona for more folk metal, and Celtos, LVGVS, or Epona for the gaulish songs. 6 more days to the show.

    Honestly, in every single Eluveitie reaction video I've seen the reviewers were blown away by the amount of instruments they saw
    By the way, the guitar solos were changed a bit on the actual album that came out this year, as Rebirth itself was out much earlier, probably even before they started working on this album
    I just came back from their show, it was more than epic seeing EIGHT people on stage with their guitars, whistles, violins, even bagpipes.

    Glad you enjoyed it. I had a feeling you would lol. Also, that hand drum the flautist was playing is an Irish instrument called a bodhrán (bo-rahn) and the cranked instrument, like other people have said, is a Hurdy-Gurdy. The band also has other tracks that are more folk based and they sing in a Gaulish sub-language called Lepontic spoken by Celtic sect, the Helvitians (the lead singer Chrigel has studied a LOT to learn how to speak and read it considering it's basically a dead language). And the song is literally about a celtic version of their rebirth. Antumnos' Gate mentioned when the singer was speaking quietly is essentially the gate to the Underworld, and the cauldron of Nidus is where the rebirth takes place, if I am not mistaken.
    Like this track where the female singer, Fabienne Urni, takes the lead and it's so good (and live!):
    ua-cam.com/video/wAnX3gzmZ-E/v-deo.html

    • @antoniomaraspin
      @antoniomaraspin 4 роки тому

      Lepontic was not the language of Helvetii, but of the Leponti, their southern neighbors, belonging to another subfamily of ancient celtic language.

    • @nexdoreum7003
      @nexdoreum7003 4 роки тому

      @@antoniomaraspin Oh, ok. I knew Lepontic was spoken in Northern Italy but I thought the region also included southern, what is now, Switzerland (Rhaetia, I think?) but maybe I misremembered. I also thought Lepontic was considered an early dialect of Gaulish, although I've seen Lepontic used to describe all forms of Celtic spoken in, the now, Italian region for some reason.

    Michalina Malisz is the hurdy gurdy player in this band. That black wheel fiddle you see in parts of the song you couldn't tell what it was. She has her own UA-cam channel and even shows how she plays this very song. She was doing covers even before she joined Eluveitie, so I think they might've seen her here after their previous hurdy gurdy player left, and decided to bring her in. It's pretty neat. And she does a lot of other covers, like Witcher and Pirates of the Caribbean.

    • @EriahSylverstone

      You should also check out Ategnatos. It's the opening song of this album, and has the main lyrics and leitmotif in the opening, before going into a very different tune. You'd love it, I'm sure. (Ategnatos is also Gaulish for Rebirth, which is what the whole album themes around.) The band is pronounced "el-vay-tee", by the way. Derived from "Helvetios", of Helvetian descent, which is an ancient Celtic tribe. They even have an album and song with that title.This band is from Switzerland, and this is the genre they do regularly. They have two fully acoustic albums too. One featuring the song Epona, I think you'd probably like as well. But yeah, this is their style and there's a lot more like this.

    The band are Swiss, named pronounced "El-vey-tee". They're a folk/melodeath act. This song is in line with their usual style. Their name is in reference to the Helvetii tribe, a Swiss based Celtic tribe.
    This song uses two traditional Irish melodies, one used as the main melody in the chorus and the other used in the breakdown played by the main whistle player.
    I forget the name of the former melody (I should have it down somehwere) but the latter is called "Lads of Laois"
    The band frequently use traditional melodies from Ireland or Brittany and less often Welsh or Scottish melodies. Very occasionally melodies outside of those regions are used.
    The instruments featured in the video are:
    tin whistles (The "flutes" you spoke of)
    Mandola (basically a bigger mandolin, that's the "lute" instrument you spoke of)
    Bodhrán (Irish drum, that's the "folk Tom" you spoke of)
    Violin
    Hurdy-Gurdy (the unusual instrument, it's a stringed instrument played by a crank turning a wheel which vibrates against the strings)
    Harp
    Other instruments they use that aren't featured are:
    Bagpipes (Galician Gaita and Irish Uilleann Pipes are most commonly used)
    Mandolin
    Some Instruments that either done by guests or no longer used would be:
    Accordion
    Irish Flute
    Shawm
    Crummhorn
    Hammered Dulcimer
    Bouzouki
    Helvetic Bagpipes

      I had to look that one up and I think you're right about it being a tin whistle. But it's also in the fipple family of instruments (like the popular Recorder in the US) which are typically classified as flutes since it is a woodwind but it isn't reed based.

I've known about them for a while, and the first time I saw them in concert back in 2013 or so all the other sets were played by generic metal bands with no folk elements. So when Eluveitie started tuning their hurdy gurdy before coming on the confusion in the audience was palpable, and it was amazing to watch that drain away into head-banging excitement as soon as the first song started up.

      I mean, if they hadn't changed it they could have just said it was intentional and called it day. There isn't anything wrong with playing with playing outside of a key signature and the dissonance added color to his solo that made it distinct from the other guitarists. It's interesting that they haven't updated the music video to reflect the "true" vision of the song though.

    You should react to Skálmöld & Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands - Kvaðning (ua-cam.com/video/yAyFyEFoZvs/v-deo.html) if you want to hear what folk metal can sound like with a symphonic orchestra or if you just want to hear the ultimate version of an awesome song (or if you just want to watch a band having the best day of their lives). Hel from the same concert is also worth checking out.
