      When I listen to them I don't hear emotion or feeling it's literally if you asked a computer to come up with a song. which is basically what Tim does he writes everything puts it into a computer unless the computer process it compress it and then he tries to figure out what the computer did and put it out with a guitar.
      They are like one of those dozens of bands out there that are technically awesome but it's just not something that you want to listen to on a daily or weekly basis. It just gets very boring very quick because there's no emotion or feeling in it.

    Idk if I can agree with your criticism of goat. Its literally flawless progression. The fluidity of switches and transitions has literally never been don better than that. And as far as melody the melody is the central riff, but it is not repeated throughout the song, it is reconstructed, or reorchestrated I guess would be a better word. They all reorchestrate their initial section, then layer a solo between the original section for their instrument and their reorchestrated secondary section. Then they do a finaly section that is differed from the two previous sections they all did. All within 4 minutes. That is not a work in progress sir. That is masterful playing. Not to mention their engineer was on his game to filter all that audio correctly and produce this clear of a studio track with this much going on in it. My good sir to each their own. But I definitely dont trust your ear amigo. Much love all the same tho.

    I just found Polyphia, via someone else's "reaction video" to "G.O.A.T.", and I tend to agree with your assessment that it's incomplete... in fact, the video I watched when I discovered them was a video of the guy reacting to their official video, and then him looking for a live version to check that it wasn't studio magic that made them so "tight", as he called it.
    The live video he picked, funnily enough, is of them using it as I would use it; as a sound-check!!! It's an exceptionally technical piece, and it's PERFECT for a sound check for this exact reason.

  • @slevin003
    @slevin003 3 роки тому +4

    i get what youre saying but i think the theme of G.O.A.T. is literally to showcase their chops, hence why there is no one lead outside of the main motif. It's just them each getting a turn to flex. Im not a complex or good composer by any means but sonically not sure where a lead would fit in the mix of it all. But either way these are just opinions, respect yours and happy you enjoyed the piece.

    You liked the skill and sort of disliked the song, hmm, makes sense actually.
    Babymetal has a song ft. Tim Henson and Scott LePage of Polyphia: Brand New Day.
    It's definitely a song, instead of stripped down prog. metal as this song.
    It's from the 'light side' of the latest album, the first half of the album which is less metallic.
    Anyway... maybe because it's not as metallic it's more like a breather track on the album and as a standalone track maybe not as inspiring. So don't know if reacting to it is that interesting to react to. I know Babymetal surprises me a lot by their choices of the kind of music they make, but in case of this song, I'm more surprised they made this kind of song because it's prog/rock.
    But Babymetal has never performed it live so nobody can complain about watching the live version ;-) LOL

    This is the first time that I've heard anything by Polyphia and I thought it was amazing. Yes, the song lasts a mere three-and-a-half minutes (if this were a '70s prog track it would be an introduction to a much longer piece), but there was a lot packed in to that time. However, I think that they could've developed the song. It seems to be highly technical and I think will benefit from several hearings.

That guitar hook is really good, but it felt like the entire song was very, very slowly building up to an intense cathartic payoff and we got like five seconds of it right as the end and then the song just terminates. Absolutely beautiful tone and sound quality on this, I loved the warmth and delicacy of everything.

    Yeah I don't understand, you say being the greatest of all time is managed by revamping your area of expertise and then you complain about the fact that they don't use a "lead melodic line" (like everyone else). Didn't they just prove they are then ? They litterally make electro metal that could be enjoyed by a raver and by a hardcore metalhead and they compose using a methodology based on theme and variation that litterally is the foundation of jazz. I mean, this is the first band I heard that successfully managed combining Jazz, Metal and Electro and probably other things. I must admit I didn't dig a lot for now because I discovered them today but I really think it goes even further than that, so even if they aren't the G.O.A.T, they are damn close.

    I agree with pretty much everything you said, and I think it's a common issue with instrumental guitar x2/bass/drummer bands that lack vocals. We're almost conditioned by popular rock music to expect a vocal Melody over that particular instrumentation, and when it's not there a part of us look for it or at least look for a replacement.
    I always thought this song was absolutely amazing. Like you, I just love every bit of what I hear. I get goosebumps from that guitar coming in...but ultimately it feels like an amazing rap beat without the vocal track. I love rap beats, and that's not meant to be an attack...I just prefer music with vocals 99% of the time.

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  4 роки тому +2

      A vocal track would work but I think they could do just fine by having a guitar play a leading melody. I think they could keep the instrumental approach, they just need something, anything, playing above the riffs.

    first, the song name is probably ironic because that's their sense of humor. i think you missed the point of this band. they don't want to be contained to some genre or musical expectations because of the instruments they're playing. Also, this song was a very hip hop vibe as does most of their newer stuff. the fact they are writing such complex music that repeats itself is the brilliance that you're missing here. hence the GOAT name, for those that think the name was not so ironic.

    Saying there is missing the meat, something to go on top of all of it. Maybe, i have no idea what that could be though.
    To me the rhythmic aspect is super strong, and in addition to having "solo" sections to show off each instrument and indivitual, even within those when they play on top of each other they complement so well, and then other beats everyone just shuts the hell up to really accentuate whoever is playing.
    With the riffs and the "melody" being so busy, im afraid adding anything on top, be it equally busy or calm, would subtract from what is there

  • @CoenBijpost
    @CoenBijpost 3 роки тому

    The song is a bit upside down. The main melody is the synthy bells at the start and end, and you can hear it in the background the whole time, and the parts all revolve around harmonising that melody. The harmonics in the main riff is literally the melody spelled out. I wouldn’t mind a solo, but there are 4 solos already, each instrument gets one. I heard someone say it’s a beat ready for the G.O.A.T. Eminem track still to come, maybe that would fill it out, as he also has a lot of idiosyncrasies in his flow. I can’t imagine a singer on this, tbh...

    I was recently watching a video for this song and I had the same thoughts as you did at the end. Like they sound great, it's a cool riff, but where's the rest of the song? Because it sounds like 3 and a half minutes of intro. The riffs are very similar at face value, the drums never lock into a solid groove since there are so many fills and breaks, and there's just nothing to break up the riffs. It's riff after riff after riff and there's no climax. There's a lot of tension in the riffs but there's no point where they strike a big chord and you say "aaaahhhhhh" and you get that release that you've been waiting for. It doesn't exist because all of the riffs have the same feeling. I'm no professional composer or anything, but I have been writing my own music for over 10 years now and this is something that I find to be consistent across a lot of bands these days. There's a focus on being impressive technically, but they forget that you still need to write a song that invokes some kind of emotion and tells a story. I would listen to half of this song and then skip to the next song because there's nothing more to hear after that point. It gets boring.

      The problem is that you’re trying to push polyphia into genres like mainstream rock and pop which of course they don’t belong into.
      If you listen to CHON/polyphia/ichika/asato etc. you’ll probably realize that’s it’s a whole different genre with a whole lot of different defining features.
      Music isn’t always the same and that’s where the problem resides. It’s not always vocals + accompaniment, it’s not always theme + variations.
      Polyphia definitely isn’t mainstream rock or pop and they don’t need to be.
      You’ve found that lots of modern bands have some sort of story to tell, and those bands aren’t polyphia.
      Go tell Bach that he needs polychords in his music. Go tell Beethoven that he doesn’t have polyrhythms. Go tell Chopin that his music lacks groove. Go tell Miles Davis that his music doesn’t make you emotional. Go tell Justin Bieber that he doesn’t use enough maj7#11 chords.
      Everyone is different, stop comparing an artist or a band with a genre that you like.

      @@stormsevenavmns8939 So you're saying that Polyphia has no story to tell? They just play a riff salad and that's it? Nothing more? I'm not trying to put them into a different genre, I'm saying the song lacks progression. It's very stagnant in it's arrangement. I don't particularly like music like that but with Polyphia's popularity, obviously people do. Just recently I had the thought that Polyphia is like the Avatar (blue people movie) of music. Technically, it's stunning. But in terms of substance beyond it's technical achievements, there's not a whole lot there. You're free to enjoy it the same why I'm free to critique it. Should you feel critical as well, you can go lay into me on my other channel, Ladderlad Music. That's where I've been uploading music since about 2015. @@Just-Michael holy shit thanks for the quick reply, thought that since I’m like a year late no one would see my comment.
      Why I and a lot of other music nerds like polyphia and Chon isn’t really because their music tells you a story. It’s more like eating candy. No story, no adventure, just raw sweetness.
      Chon with their weird rhythms and modulations, polyphia with the hyper-technical sound.
      And this is coming from a guy that can appreciate mainstream pop like Ariana Grande or Imagine Dragons (not 100% pop, but still).
      Even though polyphia is nowhere near jazz, I listen to polyphia like jazz nerds listen to jazz.
      When I listen to a jazz standard like blue bossa, giant steps, take five, there is no story. There isn’t a need for a story, because I can appreciate the intricate chord voicings, the beautifully crafted progressions, the crazy dreamy improv solos.
      Same thing when I listen to goat. When the bassist hits those sexy triplet pops and slaps, it’s 100% rhythmic but it gives me that feeling of euphoria.

      @@stormsevenavmns8939 Of course, I'm usually chillin' on youtube. And I can understand that. I played drums in the jazz band in high school but we played pop or rock songs that were arranged for a jazz band, we didn't really play the typical stuff. For me, I get bored if a section goes on too long or there isn't enough diversity in a song. Like I love J-Pop, specifically the Denpa style which is like the over-the-top, bubblegum, kawaii, weird style. There is such a mish-mash of different genres and songs will genre-jump mid song and it's very fun to listen to. It's chaotic in a way that I liken to punk and metal, just presented differently. That kind of stuff can be a little too much for people, the same way this kind of stuff is too little for me.

    To me, this was a bad reaction
    I get it, that's just your opinion, but maybe you should rethink your starting point of your opinions
    FIrst of all, not every piece of music has to have something "magical", every song tells a story, depends on how you choose to look at it
    About the melody, what are you talking about !? Every second of the song was a melody. And this is the part where you should rethink and get out of the conventional ways of looking at music
    Doesn't mean that if there's not a 4 chord progression with 6 notes of "solo" melody on it, it has no melody
    About the reinventing, this is exactly it. Not doing a conventional piece of music and still sound as good as any of them
    Also, if this wasn't everything i previously said, would it make you feel like the song went by too fast ? I don't think so.
    And i'm sure that while you were listening to it, not even once did you thought about something missing, the song just takes you wherever they wanted and meant for it to go.....

      I agree wholeheartedly. Suggesting there's no 'story' in this song is like suggesting that pop or modern art isn't as ' technically good' as renaissance because it's more 'vague'. Modern art got a lot of shit for the same reasons, also. The literally definition of modern art: "Modern artists experimented with new ways of seeing and with fresh ideas about the nature of materials and functions of art. A tendency away from the NARRATIVE, which was characteristic for the traditional arts, toward abstraction is characteristic of much modern art."
      Polyphia are modern artists of music.

I firmly believe critics are vital to art's evolution; they simultaneously help current artists hone their skills and provide the tools and language for upcoming artists to start with some knowledge. However I also know that groups like Polyphia are pushing into new territories and sometimes it's better to forge your own path than follow modern conventional advice. So yeah, I'd love for Polyphia to see this video and maybe take some idea or thought away from it; but whatever they took I would hope they take it with a grain of salt, not as an objective truth but as one opinion about conventional composition.
