So he’s saying go to you can’t see it at all and one click up on the whites? I’m partially colorblind and can’t see it - I can see what I thought was the faintest but he said to go one less, if that makes sense...
I’ve applied this to my PS4 Pro especially for Ghost of Tsushima. I knew that I was using non optimal HDR settings for a long time. Directly noticed the improvements although I have a PC monitor (4K 32", VA panel and Basic HDR). Lightings are more realistic, interiors have a more balanced dark tone, fog is more visible… sunny landscapes are especially sharper than before. And fast transitions between dark and lighter environments are much better too. Many thanks 😊
you also have to check the in game settings, i know in red dead redemption 2 they have a stupid setting called cinematic mode in the HDR settings and you cannot lower the levels at all so it makes the game look dry and greyed out. HAHA i remember at launch it was terrible because it was the only setting but rockstar fixed it a week later and added a new setting called game setting or something where you can change the blacks and whites and paper whites whatever that is. it was a huge game changer since cinematic mode literally washed out all the colors and made the screen seem like it was losing brightness but it was really the game setting. most people kept HDR off until the patch was released to fix it.

I’m using the Hisense U8H (mini-lcd/quantum dot. Just an amazing budget tv that I believe you can get before your flagship tv lines) and I can 100% agree with these settings. And I made sure to test it with an amazing game but with a broken HDR (Resident Evil Village) and it was the best when trying different (a little higher/lower than the first image that peeks/clips). If anyone finds this helpful with that tv, it’s 16 clicks up from the bottom for the first and second screen, then set the last all the way down as low as you can go. The best part about that TV’s game mode, it actually show what it’s running at on screen (nothing real in depth) but most importantly, it has where you can also control your whites and black if you want to get it REAL perfected. Thanks again for this.

This is only good if you play in a pitch black room am i right? Because I think if in step 3 you set to the darkest, in a bright room it could ruin the picture?
IMPORTANT FOR LG C9 OR OLDER USERS: If you have LG C9 you have to set dynamic tone mapping to ‘HGiG’ and black level to ‘LOW’ (because it doesn’t have black level ‘auto’ like the CX) and set the RGB range on PS4/PS5 to ‘limited’. (If your tv supports black level ‘auto’ you should select that and also put the RGB range to ‘auto’ on your ps4/ps5.) You’re welcome. (The LG C9 should be in HDR mode to change the dynamic tone mapping) HDR summary: 1/3: adjust until the logo completely disappears 2/3: adjust until the logo completely disappears 3/3: set the logo to the darkest setting possible (if you’re in a pitch dark room, if you’re not in a pitch dark room and there’s some light in the room you can set it a little higher).
Interestingly I get much better HDR if I set black level to low and rgb range to full... i get to see more color and higher peak brightness for stuff like fire, Sun etc
Problem i get is hdr blacks aren’t black enough. Im about to try the 3 settings suggested in the video here. However I’m still on ps4, and either or, most game aren’t hgig capable is what i hear so not sure what to do. Specifically im playing ac valhalla and having so many issues, but i get this with all ubisoft games, not on others. So i set rgb to full of limited considering i have a lghdtv 2021 model

I bought my 4K tv 6 years ago and it’s great but I was pissed when I found out about hdr and that I didn’t have it. Then yesterday I found out I have it on a specific hdmi port. I was extremely happy but felt horrible at the same time
@@jimmarchibarbosa9471 probably fake HDR either way. TVs from those years didn’t even reach HDR400 specs which isn’t even good but it’s the minimum to be considered hdr. Most probably it’s peak brightness is around 300 nits

That’s how I calibrated my PS4 Pro as well. Clipped just one step above when the sun was barely visible. (Just one step down for the shadows) Edit: After watching the full video I realized that we should be turning the shadow all the way down to get pure blacks.
@@Joshsmoove In theory, yes. Since black should always be (0,0,0) no matter what TV type you’re using. OLED or QLED. If it looks way too contrast-y, like you’re losing details in the shadow areas, then change it back.
What If I just have a gaming monitor with HDR400? 🤣 Maximum peak 450 or 500? Do I have to make the first sun more visible than it is already to try it in a correct way? 😆
Thanks not sure if it made a huge difference but I had to change the HDR settings 50+ times in the first week. The perfectionist in me just felt like there had to be a better way than "set it when barely visible" Barely visible isn't very specific. Even though I didn't really enjoy all the technical crap, it showed me that this video and the reasoning behind it were well thought out. Thanks Mate
@@manyakgaming1346 HGIG looks way too dark in a majority of games like Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, or Demon’s Souls. I love HGIG in Cold War. Have you calibrated the HDR like the video states with HGIG enabled prior? Before I did what Vincent suggest my image was too dim but now it’s pretty close to Dynamic Tone Mapping on but without the overshoot on some of the brighter stuff.

Screen one; +15 from lowest point. No sun . Screen 2: same. +15 Screen 3: set at 0? Its either minimum or maximum for screen 3. Thank you for the upload
Thank you for this illuminating video (clarifying both the proper calibration settings and difficulties encountered by people with deceptive mistresses). If you have time to illustrate what dynamic tone mapping does to ruin the process I would certainly enjoy that content.
Great video Vincent. Side note, it may be beneficial to get commentary from Sony as they may be applying an offset of +1 or -1 on the values input by the user to align with the original guidance from the HGIG group (I.e. they could have assumed the user would find it easier to set at “barely visible” and then notch it one more to the clipping point due to some case studies showing people went too far on average).
This. These recommendations are based on the assumption that the selected value is not "modified" compared to what you see in the calibration screen. I'd want confirmation as it is easy for placebo to make one think the slight adjustments are indeed better.
Following both the gaming callibration video and this HDR setting video. I can finally see all the detail in dark areas and dark images. Can't believe I've played games without these settings this whole time!
Speaking short, turn on HGIG in your TV and only then adjust your PS5 leaving it zero on the last step. (Completely black, no sun). Correct me if I am wrong 😅
Yes, that’s what they’re saying but it’s too dark for me. I need glasses though not only do glasses make my vision better. They also make colors brighter so I think that’s my problem.

You made my picture so much better in my games. I can’t thank you enough man you deserve a freaking award for this video. I’m not even joking. It meant that much to me so thank you.
Thanks for doing this Vincent. I recall spending hours trying to get this right for Control on my PS4 Pro and LG C9 where darker colours were far too black.
Vincent, as soon as I heard your advice regarding Minimum Luminance, I already figured that my games would be dark and I would lose detail in dark gaming environments. No sooner said than done. By calibrating Minimum Luminance to 0, all PS5 games I've tested are clipping in dark areas. I had to give 7 clicks in the Minimum Luminance to be cool. Regarding Maximum Luminance, what you indicated was perfect! I have LG C2.
I gotta say that hearing someone know what they are talking about and being so easy to express it is very satisfying Thanks for everything man now i know how to properly use my tv 😂 I’ve just discovered that i in fact can use HDR on my PS5 i always thought i couldn’t use after 3 years 😅
Awesome thanks. I always disliked this method of HDR calibration because it always felt like guess work. I like things a little more precise and this definitely helped. Btw, it works on PC too for anyone interested. One of hing I'm not sure if you mentioned is whether to set monitor color space to auto or native. I've heard it's a preference thing, but native seems more accurate. Thanks again.
Adjust the HDR on the first two pages right before the sun logo disappears or on the level where it DOES disappear (Meaning Either/Or. When you can’t see it anymore OR the last brightness level before you can’t see the sun logo) and for the third page for adjusting, use the very darkest option so that you have true blacks on your LED TV because OLED TV’s turn the pixels OFF individually when it comes to black colors. Yes I know very fancy, love today’s technology ages.
I have an A80J. Should I turn off gradation preferred (TV) before adjusting HDR settings on PS5? To have the symbol disappear it's 15 clicks with gradation off but with it on there's a few more clicks.
Hey do these same rules Apply to Dynamic Tone Mapping as well or just HGIG? Many games on the Next Gen consoles unfortunately don't have HGIG support and it's a little frustrating to swap between DTM and HGIG and also adjusting the HDR Values each time between different games
@@1985NEVETS ok thanks i just did it and went 14 clicks on 1 and 2 screen for the third i went all the way down and im getting 840 nits which is sony x90j peak brightness

Bullcrap. Dragging to minimum is moving the PS5 black threshold below the black threshold of the TV. The TV black cannot get any darker. It just drags the dark greys towards black making the overall image too dark. That is not calibration.
My lg c1 doesn't like these settings. I had to use the ps5 suggested settings. Dead Space had crushed blacks and the highlights were blinding. After returning to ps5 suggested settings it looked perfect.
I have a q80t in a basement with very low light. I followed your videos and tried to adapt accordingly. The god of war ragnarok and a few ubisoft titles are washed. The black is something between blue and gray. Everything looks opaque. When I try to take a picture of the screen using my phone, the photo seems way better on my phone. I also asked someone to see the comparison, and the person agreed with me. Color balance is warm2, bright and contrast 50, sharp 0, etc. To barely see the sun, I have to use 27(im using 16,16,0). Thanks for the help, your videos are awesome.
To barely see the sun i must do 30 clicks bro... but i didnt wanted to be that much high so i just did 29 on each .. still can see the sun but whatever ..
As I wrote to another user. On TV I have set: Brightness: Max Contrast: 90 Auto local dimming: High X-tended Dynamic Range: High On PS5: 1/3: 20 steps from 0 2/3: 14 steps from 0 3/3: Set to 0 What are you using? Would love a guide.
@@whyman4451 I have a 2016 Sony 4K HDR TV and adjusting the first two until the sun really disappears and the last one at lowest setting has really improved picture quality a lot!
I think it's essentially the same since the Xbox calibration menu will ask you to adjust the slider until the logo is NOT visible anymore. Unlike the PS5 which tells you to adjust it to make the logo only barely visible. So my guess is you can just follow the instructions on the Xbox calibration menu as it tells you the same as this video.
Supposedly you wanna go all the way to the top and then click it 14 times down that’s for the first two settings for the last setting. It’s for the darkness. They’re supposed to make the last setting as dark as possible.

@@interlake2043 They are wrong, he didn't go through the HDR calibration tool with the Canon for the Xbox like he's doing here, I hope he does as this is telling us exactly what the nit value is for each increase/decrease, which is helpful for those of us without HGIG displays as the tv's tone mapping is constantly fighting to preserve the detail, which hurts the tool's effectiveness.

Tv settings obviously play a huge part , best thing to do is calibrate them both together and experiment. I’m constantly adjusting my picture accordingly to games, they also depict a difference so you gotta match all 3 to the best possible quality. So the best thing to do is go off of your tv or monitor capability, the default settings work best for a low quality tv and for a high quality tv or monitor there will be more adjustments. Excellent video! Symbols for 1 and 2 were just barely visible on my E8 so hardly any clipping. That’s how I calibrated my PS4 Pro as well. Clipped just one step above when the sun was barely visible. (Just one step down for the shadows)

Exactly what I did feels gud
For the best pure blacks should you adjust the pure blacks all the way to 0 for qleds?
@@Joshsmoove In theory, yes. Since black should always be (0,0,0) no matter what TV type you’re using. OLED or QLED. If it looks way too contrast-y, like you’re losing details in the shadow areas, then change it back.

It is😉
Adjust the HDR on the first two pages right before the sun logo disappears or on the level where it DOES disappear (Meaning Either/Or.

On summary:
Screen 1: the sun must be really hard to see or invisible.
Screen 2: the same.
Screen 3: Pure black/all black, sun not visible, click all the way down.
By the number of clicks on the D-pad you can do:
From dark to bright on the first and second screen: 31
From bright to dark on the 3rd screen: 15
The best set up for my tv was:
First screen: 25
Second screen: 25
Third screen: 15
For an easy input instead of clicks 25 times the D-pad i just click it 6 time starting from max bright to dark because 31-6=25 and the 3rd screen its just all the way down to dark.
