- Complete trouble shooting for a STIHL FS 70R Trimmer. Check the carburetor, the spark plug, the fuel filter, the air filter, and the spark arrestor. See what was my actual problem and how I fix it.
I bought the fs 70r 13 years ago. Yesterday was the anniversary when we bought the house. Still have the trimmer. Love Stihl.

Helpful video. Today I just bought a FS 70 R. I traded my FS 90 R. It would have been a $170 repair. My Stijl dealer gave me a credit of $75 for it. I didn’t need the new FS 91 R for my new home of only 1/4 acre as I used to have one acre on my previous home. They told me I needed a clutch and a new carb. It was 13 years old. So I was happy and got a 4 year warranty if I bought a pack of synthetic oil with it. Was a no brainer. I was happy. Thanks for sharing.
I would have figured a clutch and a carb would have cost no more than $50 in parts and should have been able to install in about 30 min. Maybe I’m wrong about cost of parts but how much do they charge for labor. There’s a reason I try to work on my own stuff, can’t afford it otherwise
@@EverydayJourney maybe the parts would be that cheap if I would have gone after market. I did that once with the carb and only lasted about a year. There labor charges are $100 an hour! Nuts.
I was ready for an new one anyway. The choke and throttle system and shut off button on the new stuff is much better than the older stuff.
$100 per hour seems steep but in actuality that’s just how much you have to charge to make sure to keep the business running. I’d go out of business because I never want to charge enough
@@EverydayJourney just up the road is an other Stihl dealer/repair and they get $75 an hour. You would think stihl would make them be all the same.
I guess it just depends on the amount of business they do. Shop charges also have to cover idle time. More work and they can lower the rates a little
This was exactly my issue. Before watching this video, I cleaned the carb (probably needed to happen anyway), checked the spark plug (it was fine), but had not considered the spark arrester being clogged. Cleaned it and my Stihl fired right up, full-force. Thank you!
Btw, you can get a perfect cleaning of the spark arrester screen if you use a blow-torch to burn off the buildup. Thanks again!
a customer just dropped off the same trimmer FS70R. I'm not impressed with the new Stihl Trimmers. If you pull too hard on the spark plug boot it pulls the wire connector out that attaches to the plug. Disassembling it to get to the coil to do repairs is a real hassle. What i found was 3 issues. Besides the plug connector, the air filter was plugged, and the spark arrestor was so plugged that it wouldn't run. just and fyi for any lawn maintenance company's or anyone who's looking into buying stihl.: look at the older stihl trimmers they were built much better. After cleaning the air filter and spark arrestor it runs great. I still have to fix the coil wire to make it longer.
Thanks so much for this video. First I pulled spark plug wire and pulled the boot completely off. After repairing I watched your video and sure enough it was the spark arrestor. Must be common on these units.

I did exactly the same thing. I watched the video to figure out how to take the top cover off so I could access more of the wire to get it pushed back into the boot. I had been fighting with mine for over a year with this issue and couldn't believe the owner's manual didn't say anything at all about the spark arrester.
thanks, video helped tremendously. This model has cover that is challenging for removal. Seeing on UA-cam rather than reading manual is best method.

Good info. Thanks for the video! First thing I ckd was the spark arrestor, it's fine. Next I'll ck fuel filter, spark plug and carb. These things are great when they work! lol never a dull moment!

to test the if it is the air filter (rarely is) you just have to take the filter out and test it with out filter if the problem persist without filter that means would have the same problem with a new filter.
This trimmers, if you use every day after one month you should clean the spark arrest. The best way to clean is using a fire torch, If you have a small propane torch that will do the job, burn it and then blow it and it will be clean as new and just take one or two minutes.
This machines have "programmed obsolescence" work on them The best I had was the 55's I would do the maintenance every month and they would last at least 3 years working hard every day without problems after 3 years they still worked but start having some other issues.
But stihl don't want people to find tricks to keep a machine running for many years so they create a new machine every other year or every year and instead of solving problems the previous machines had they made them to bring other issues (I'm not joking) and then you can't buy more the one you know all the tricks and hacks to keep it running.
I have the 56's and 70's and this year I bought the fs94 that is already on the commercial grade. I always bought the residential ones because I just use for maintenance (don't need too much power is just for keeping edges sharp) and they were lighter so working all day with one of them, the lighter the better and they cost less than $200 than the commercial ones. Like I said in the previous paragraph they do the residential weaker and more prone to get issues (I think this is where they spend the time instead of trying to improve them, the new residential models bring new issues instead of solving). for example on the earlier models you could take the spark arrest without taking anything apart now the screw that hold the mesh is covered by the plastic. I drilled a hole so I can take the mesh without take the orange plastic or to be easy to take it out.
At certain point the muffler might get too plugged with carbon as well and the carburetor might get issues too that are not easy fixes.

I noticed that it is running a little worse now after many months of use. Will check the spark arrestor again. I may check about drilling an access hole to make it easier in the future. I do love this trimmer though. Wouldn’t trade it for anything
Okay, I was correct. I would have started out with replacing the fuel, then spark plug and if it checked out I would check fuel lines. I would look at the spark screen in the muffler. I believe that would be the problem.

My drive shaft is not connected at the engine end
There is a screw. On the end at the side of the muffler take the screw out an there is a little screen in the.mufflet it is clogged with carbon about 4.00 or 5 .oo dollars good luck
I don’t know why, after checking the air filter, your next step wouldn’t automatically be to check (clean) the spark arrestor screen. At least for a 2 cycle motor.
And when working with 2 cycle motors, you should keep them at WOT (wide open throttle) as much as possible.

Mine hasn’t done it again since then. I do try to run it full throttle here and there so it’ll blow through or burn it up
I'm 15 and I already knew the prob when u started it I know everything about them little small engines. I have a fs 55 I fully rebuilt and a fs 80 pro I rebuilt the carb and they both run like a champ
I'm 13 and have rebuilt 75 engines from crank to cylinder head 4 stroke and 2 stroke and they run better than a champ

Clean the spark arrestor screen ? Always check the simple things first . And some models you do not even have to take the muffler off .
Before this trimmer, I never had an issue like this. Must be the emissions regulations.
@@EverydayJourney It will continue to happen because it has a dual ringed piston which makes it run cooler than a single ringed piston . If you are going to just use it around the house I would suggest you just leave it out or it will continue to clog up . I bought one 2 weeks ago and that is the first thing I did . 70s are for bigger and thicker grass so you need to hold down the throttle if not the oil that’s burning in the gas will clog the Exhaust and that high pitched clanking is because your not mixing your gas and 2cycle to the right ratio so the gears heats up and breaks
Anytime you've got either end of the shaft open it's not a bad idea to put some lube on that cable. You can also get these spark arrestor screens pretty clean with just a bic lighter. Heat up one area that's pretty carboned up for a bit, then immediately apply some extra oxygen by blowing, the carbon deposit should start to glow just like charcoal and burn off as you're blowing on it. You can get a screen fairly clean just doing that, then gently tapping the ash off the screen.
Also, taking the starter assembly/cover off is only three screws, and it does make some things easier.
Now all I have to do is figure out where the little eight or nine millimeter c-clip that fell out of the case is supposed to go... hmmmm

@@EverydayJourney - after a lifetime of being left with extra bits and pieces after reassembling a project, I am convinced that the manufacturers just put in some spare parts. Just in case.
If you have my luck, you’ll find out it’s needed when it flys apart while in use and then all your parts get scattered in the grass
Next time use a propane torch on that spark arrester, once removed. Heat it till it glows, no more clogs. Use synthetic oil at 50:1, as per Stihl. Far fewer clogs.
You’re right about the torch. Worked so much faster. Did that the second time it happened. Third time I was out using it. Had to try a lighter. Ended up scraping most away with a knife. Works again but took forever
Bought a 70 from do it best. The cable failed first week. Took it back for warranty, and they saif that they replaced the cable, well took it apart myself to find that they epoxied the cable in! Out of warranty now. Trimmers are pretty easy to work on, just need the cable. Having a devil of a time finding one for some reason, cant even find a part number! Any help?

I just bought a new stihl fs 70r about a week ago I like it does the job and does it well I don't use it commercial but I wanted a commercial grade machine I was looking at the 90r but wanted to stay with 2 stroke engine.
Mine is still running like a champ. Just watch my video, unless this is that video, on cleaning the spark arrestor. I’ve had to do it a couple of times. I’ve had luck to be able to get at it without taking anything apart. Just have to push the plastic housing aside to get at the screw. Thanks for watching

Stihl and Husqvarna are both good saws. My big one is Husqvarna and my arborist saw is a Stihl. Can’t complain about either
@@EverydayJourney I was bragging about my stihl fs 70r until yesterday September 13 I noticed gas leaking out the carb the air filter was soaked with gas my machine is only 2 weeks old and already had to go in for warranty repair I took it back to the stihl dealer I bought it from and they are going to put a new carb on it when I wear this machine out I will be going to echo or some other commercial grade trimmer
I have a fs130 bought new yrs ago and It has been put thru a lot.
It seemed to be getting weaker and would die out after an hour of use.
I replaced air filter, cleaned spark arres screen and still issue.
I thought I should check valve adj.
There was no play in valves at top dead.
I adjusted using the Stihl Flr gauge.
I almost cannot pull hard enough to turn engine.
So I slowly started to tighten valves (each one a bit) till I could again using pull rope turn engine, she still wont start and at that point no clearance in either valve at top dead cntr.
??? check cam. So I tore down and cam gear- lobe and P rods look good.
Any thoughts?

Just from experience with other things, I would swap the ignition coil. I’ve had them look good but still wouldn’t start. Be nice if you had a spare to check it with.

@@EverydayJourney Worth a look. But I believe a larger problem with it being almost impossible to turn over using pull rope when valves are adjusted to specs.
Symptom compares to an engine that the compression release is in-op.
Not sure if a weed eater engine has such a thing.
But I am going to go into flywheel side this morn to (rule in or out) woodruff key.
As she has been abused as a brush chopper.

Check the muffler filter or the clutch.run at lease mid grade gas.my muffler filter was gunked up,i cleaned it,it tore that grass up

STIHL dealership told me to run 93 high octane fuel mixed with the 2 stroke oil of course been a good weedeater.
Now that I know it’s an easy fix, I’m not worried. I have run it full throttle a bit more to make sure it burns all that up. Haven’t had to clean it out again since. Still works like a champ
How to take out the clutch
Have this trimmer for my unit and it has been a problem. Been to the shop twice already and they STILL haven't gotten the problem solved. I can see the that thing in the middle spinning and not spinning when you rev up the engine. It frustating!!! I'll let you know. I have had the F130 a POWERFUL monster but it was stolen (2 of them ) and I replaced them with the Kombi which ended up being stolen a few months later. So then I bought this F70 because it was cheaper but it's been a huge headache for. Its good WHEN it it runs
+Bluff City Blight Patrol, sounds like you are talking about the clutch. As you rev up the engine, centrifical force causes the clutch to engage and turn the shaft. I have a video for the clutch on a craftsman trimmer. They are all similar maybe this will help
My FS70r clutch finally gave up today, it locked up a few times now it slips so bad the engine just revs and the trimmer head is only at 50%. Does the clutch drum come off once torn down that far?
I just removed the spark arrester screen, but its always best to check that and the air filter first. They are both always dirty.
+That One Guy, just checked the vid because I've slept since then. Once the top plastic housing was removed, you can see the clutch drum. Normally just requires an Allen wrench to take it off to expose the clutch. Haven't messed with this one before so I'm not certain, but it shouldn't be to difficult. Check out my other vid for a craftsman trimmer clutch repair. Most are similar. Good luck
The Muffler has a screen that gets clogged. You and remove an burn the sediment away. I removed the screen all together.
That’s one method, but it does take away the safety measure that it’s intended for
I noticed like some fuel residue on the underside of the plastic cover, mine is leaking fuel & looks like that too, trying to figure out why it's leaking. Any idea?
Just a little that gets out through/around the air filter for the carburetor. Not a problem unless it becomes excessive
@@EverydayJourney I noticed mine had some leakage & decided to tighten all the main bolts & screws to maybe stop it from leaking. When I took it apart I unscrewed all the all the plastic housing screws at one time so the weight of the trimmer arm forced the housing open, motor already loose popped up putting tension on the gas vent hose. Tighten the bolts & screws put it all back together, mounted the trimmer on the wall & was leaking even worse, it drained all my fuel. Took it apart again after seeing your video, took one part of the housing off at a time. Took the black hose off the air breather which is connected to the vent. When I had initially tore apart the trimmer the first time apparently the vent assembly had come apart. So at this time I popped the bottom part of the vent assembly out of the tank and snapped the top and bottom parts back on. Once I put the vent back together put it back in the tank and thank God no more bad leaks. Thank you for your video.

I had the same problem with mine. I took mine out and left it out.
You should of got a lighter and burn the oil off the screen first to get the gunk hard so the wire brush could get the screen cleaner but good job.

Try to clean the spark arrestor. It could be your problem

Then it must be something that is affected once it’s warm. Have you checked the compression? Also, I would check it again after it gets warm and cuts off. Just to see if it changes much

Should be good. Did you buy a cheap coil? Maybe the heat is affecting it. New air cleaner? Maybe it’s a gasket somewhere on it that’s causing the issue. Check to make sure everything is tight. Fuel filter? I wish I was there to help.
Im having issues with a 70r not wont to start atm gets gas in the bubble/ plug gets soark/ an even putters smoke out the exhaust a. Thats it all it will do. An i happen to take the exhausted off an move the piston up in down by turning the alternator an i notice bubbles form when it compresses all around the exhaust port idk it it could the cause of the issue jf it means to much air or i happened to got soap or water into the crank or somrhing if anyone could messge me bacm asap it do me great deal my uncle relys on it to keep his business alfoat an we hiting hard times gotta do everything ourselfes to keep budgets
Not revving it high enough, spark arrested screen is clogged, un do the flathead screw driver and burn the build up off, rev it more, the oil will combust propertly, never deal with it again.
Question do you have to grease the trimmer head? If so where is it located
I haven’t seen a place. I think it would be best to grease it but it’ll have to be taken apart
@@EverydayJourney Hmm ok that's weird all the 90's and up have a insert for the grease . I actually bought some grease yesterday. I know there is a screw with a star and it's hard as heck to un screw right underneath the trimm guard . Would that be the place to put grease?

How do i remove the clutch ?????
Haven’t done it with this one but normally you remove the spark plug and push rope into the cylinder until it keeps the piston from moving. Then you loosen the bolt on the clutch to remove it.

I don;t understand why the plug wouldn't have oil on it. It's a 2-cycle machine.
If it’s burning up properly, you won’t see a lot of residue

I did this too, and probably is the best idea too. but just recently I had a fs70 that it build up too much carbon on the small exit of the muffler and was behaving like the one on this video. after cleaning became worst. I took it out the muffler and on the other end, the one that connects with the motor there was an "icicle" of carbon.
But that trimmer worked almost an year without problems working on summer every day, after I took the spark arrest out.

The first thing we do as contractors is remove spark arrestor before we use them.

You have got to run the piss out of Stihls especially if you are running Stihl oil. Run it full tilt and no problems had mine for 7 years now. Stale gas will also make it run like crap. Even gotten bad gas from a reputable gas chain before.
Yes that’s probably part of my problem. I run with just as much throttle as I need. I hate going full throttle unless I’m clearing some thick grass. It’s probably just not burning it hot enough.
i was wondering if u had any experience working on these weed whackers, but anyways, before i viewed your video i was thinking maybe u had some bad fuel lines or the spark arrestor, which after watching the ending that was it was, no negative comments here, just leting u know, cause i also have fs70r i bought not to long ago and its awesome, good video.

I fixed my Stihl permanently. Went and got a real commercial Maruyama Brush Hog.

You should watch it again. Clutch worked fine. Maybe the second time around will show you what the problem was. Don’t just assume without watching the whole video

I’m trying to figure out the problem as I go. Trying to show people the troubleshooting process. If it’s to slow, use the fast forward button. Some people need it to be slower er so they can follow the process

Carb came out ok. Luckily all the gaskets separated. Would suck to have to replace them because they got damaged for no reason
