One of the best, if not the best U-Tube videos that I have seen. Firstly, the presentation required thirteen minutes and you took exactly that time: No adlibbing, no foolish comments/remarks that are useless and time consuming. Obviously you gave prior thought to what you were going to share and how. Unlike a lot of other presenters you did not get in front of the camera and then start to think about what you are going to present. So many presenters cause a ten minute presentation to go on for twenty and thirty minutes. Well done on a clear, succinct and very instructive presentation.
Hello Steve . I can not help thinking if I was passenger on a plane that the captain could not land , I believe you would be the man to talk me down . The explanation of this video is really 100 per cent . Simple and clear .
Your gift is your ability to share your knowledge to help others fix and maintain their own equipment! Thanks for using small words and speaking slowly LoL
I have had an FS-45 Stihl Trimmer since 2001. Just did my first tune up on it in 2021. Just the plug and air filter didn't change the fuel filter. The main thing I do is make sure it is totally out of gas for winter storage. Run it until all gas is out of the carb. I use the stihl oil for the gas mix too. It is a great machine.
Even though I have a different model of Stihl, as always, I have learned something new. I love the way you always repeat important facts to remember and visually show the part numbers giving me the time to pause the video and write them down in my "Steve's Small Engine Saloon" note book. Thanks again!
This is crazy. I've never done this before in my life - always paid mechanics to do it. I have been following these instructions, and I actually found that the last mechanic who worked on it had the fuel lines routed incorrectly, causing a kink in the longer fuel line. Not only did I learn how to do this, but I was able to fix another problem.
You're my hero Stever. I could not get my Stihl FS 45 to work after spending hours on it. I got the $13 tune-up kit from Amazon and then spent 45 minutes replacing the spark plug, fuel line, fuel filter, air filter, and carburetor (in between taking sips from my 24 oz MGD). Started up on the 3rd try. Many thanks.
My uncle gave me a not running Stihl weed eater in 2021. It has sat under the shed ever since. After watching your video last night this morning I pulled the weed eater out and went to work on the carburetor under the guidance of "your spoken words". And I got a pleasant surprise that I wasn't expecting. That weed eater fired off on the 5 pull, and it sat there an idle its ass off until I turned it off.. Thanks Man for being articulate enough to make me pay attention.
Hey, I was doing a tune up on my fs 38 watching this video. I was never very good with small engines. Watching your videos for the last 3 years has helped me save money. I found a 15 year old Poulan p3314 chainsaw in the garbage. After asking the home if I could have it I took it home, bought a new carb for $50 installed it with a plug and filter and it runs great. $300 saved. It's a great little back up when I am out using my Husqvarna 455.
Bought my Stihl trimmer 12 years ago. Embarrassed to say I never tuned it up but didn't use it that much ( I had a kid doing the yard for several years). It was running bad. Would die if I gave it too much gas or if I turned it at any angle. Watched your video. Your close-in camera work was very well done and helpful. Did the tuneup. Also bought new gas and oil. Now it runs great. Thanks for the help!
This was excellent! I got the parts this morning (plus a primer bulb) and did the tune up just as you showed. It went very smoothly. It now runs like a champ. Your comments got me over the tight spots to watch out for. NO FRUSTRATION, NO UNNECESSARY PARTS REMOVED, THE RIGHT TOOLS, JUST SMOOTH SAILING!!! Excellent video, perfect close-ups for the details. I have to see what you have to help me now tune up the chain saw.
I just repaired a failed Stihl FS40 string trimmer. Used some of your tips really helped. Had to replace muffler and spark arrestor. Did full tuneup and carb adjustment. 6 yr old unit runs like new. Thanks Steve!😀
This helps a lot I just got assigned a weed eater at my landscaping job caues I’m good at useing one and I’m learning on my off days to maintain it and keep it running since it’s brand spanking new I like to make sure it last me years to come.
Again, another entertains video, thanks. One small thing to add, when a new spark plug is installed always check the gap at the electrode. I have had new plugs where the gap has been closed up. I know you would automatically check this when you take the plug from the box but your followers may over look it. Cheers
The way I replaced the fuel filter was that I pulled the tank. You have to pull the pull cord assembly, and undo a couple of screws and the two fuel lines if you don't want mess with pulling the carb. Thank you for posting this video you are awesome every time I watch a video of yours I learn something!
Thank you, Steve. Your videos have been a *big* help to me. I have learned, and applied, much. I like the way you explain things and include tips as you go. Informative and humorous without being condescending. There are others I've learned from on UA-cam, but yours have been the most consistent, most on-track/on-topic, and best illustrated.
Thanks so much! I’ve never done something like this before, but your instructions were superb and I completed the change of all parts with no problems. Probably saved myself a couple hundred dollars by not getting a mechanic to do it. You’re a legend.
It's a good idea to clean the spark arrestor screen too. If it gets clogged with carbon your weed wacker won't run properly. I take it off and burn the carbon off with a torch. Great videos, I love your channel - very informative and saves me $$. Thanks!
Hum cool stuff this. Stihl relevant after so many years cause I own a Stihl fs38. As to pulling and replacing the fuel filter via the tank inlet, it can be done. I did it by bending a loop in the end of a piece of soft wire and curving the wire to fit the contour of the tank. I snagged the filter and carefully pulled it out the top of the tank and grabbed the fuel line just behind the filter, popped off the ole filter, inserted the new one, and let the filter and line settle back into place. Surprisingly enough the rubber line is supple enough to stretch.
Im in Australia.I have a Stihl FS 85 thats been sitting in the shed for a few years.I had a spare new carbie for it.Put it on yesterday and couldn't get the screw adjustments right. Watched your video and now it runs great. Thanks for your help.

Sir- I followed your directions but it wouldn’t throttle up. I cleaned the SPARK ARRESTER and it works great. My only advice is to mention cleaning the spark arrester if it doesn’t throttle up! Thank you, sir!
Steve great video. On my FS46 trimmer when I do mine I don't have take carb off. I take back orange cover off then fuel tank drops down. change filter put back in. why cover is off I unbolt the screen on muffler and clean. and check pull cord and clean cover. then put it all back together.
Hay Steve, You Are the MAN! My Stihl fs45 has always run great, I thought, until I went through all the steps you’ve explained in such perfect detail Only an drunk drunk couldn’t understand 🤪. Now my wacker runs even better than right outta the box 10 years or so ago. Last spring it started in 5-6 pulls with Last years gas in it. Of course I always add Sta-Bil in 93 oct in al my Stihl equipment. ThankYou for helping us All out! Oh yeah, I loved your reaction to the Honey Brown beer in another of your videos😂
You are always so helpful! I find myself looking to you every spring for this or that and you never disappoint. You are much appreciated, thank you once again for a well-put-together, informative, right-to-the-point video!

really informative. Picked up a FS45 on verge rubbish collect. Took it home and had a bit of a tinker around with it-works fine. Might look at doing a full maintence on it now with this info. Cheers, from Australia
Thanks Steve. Luv your channel and appreciate the knowledge. You are my turn to guy. You've saved me a lot of time and aggravation. Can't thank you enough.
This video made me have to try one more time and successfully got it right ,i realy like the high setting first ....worked like a charm i love UA-cam....amazing job , keep on Wrenching bud.4:20 all the way.....
Hello! Your videos are so helpful, and you are now my go-to when I have a question about maintenance or repair on my Stihl products. A question though...I have a Stihl FS 85 weed eater that for the life of me, I can't seem to get started. It started the last time I used it (2 months ago, fresh fuel mix), so I thought, maybe the gas went bad during our hot spell even though it has Stabil in it. Fresh gas didn't change anything, so I've replaced all fuel lines, fuel and air filters, the carb, the spark plug, cleaned the spark arrest screen, changed out the gas cap, and checked the ignition module to assure there's a spark to the plug. I even bought the expensive 50:1 fuel mix from our saw shop -just to be sure my fuel mix wasn't the issue. The switch is on and engaged, the primer bubble fills nicely, the tank is full...What else have I not checked/replaced? I keep thinking I have missed some very basic thing, -but what?!?...Sigh. Any ideas?
Are you sure you are getting spark? Is the piece/spring inside the spark plug boot missing? Have you checked compression? Bore scope in through spark plug hole to see that the piston is indeed moving and not locked up or rod broken? I see this is from a year ago...so i'll assume the unit was replaced, fixed, or now working, but the mystery is killing me...LOLOL
Morning Steve great videos excellent stuff thank you I have just done a full service on my Stijl family 38 wiper snippet and done the tune up on the carby but when I hit full throttle it dies in the arse I can hold it about 3/4 throttle n it revs high but go any further n it dies down your help would be just wonderful thank you Deborah
I would love to see your work shop fridge stock ??? for BEER .... What all kinds and sizes do you keep in stock to run the Small Engine Saloon ??? Thanks for all the great info.
This video helped me replace my Stihl FS 45 carburetor. My weed eater had not been cranked in over 3 years. After following all steps it cranked immediately! The only tool i used differently was I had a Miller Lite instead of a Budweiser.
Great video as always but you don't need to pull the carb for the fuel filter. You can make a special hook tool out of a piece of wire hanger. It needs to be a little long and has a bend in it so it usually takes a couple of tries to get it just right the shape to reach down in the tank and hook the fuel line and pull the filter out through the filler. This will work on most Stihl fuel tanks, some may need to be a little longer than others.
I would never “fish” that fuel filter out through the gas cap. Of course it’s possible but it’s harder. Possibly damaging the fuel line. The proper way is through the opening under the carb.

much respect, the way you make your videos is superior to most others as you add tons of details and angles to help assist in learning such things.
Thank You...
Agreed - just what I was looking for! Many thanks Steve from Nova Scotia, Canada
Hi! Steve i have owned mine for 23 years only one spark plug and exhaust screen cleaning love it
Good to hear
That’s what you get for owning a stihl!
Hello Steve . I can not help thinking if I was passenger on a plane that the captain could not land , I believe you would be the man to talk me down . The explanation of this video is really 100 per cent . Simple and clear .

His first instruction would be to locate & drink the biggest can of beer I have seen in my life :-)

I can't thank Steve enough for his video

Any ideas?
Is your killswitch broken? Do you have strong compression? Those are the best guesses I have - new switch or new piston ring.
Mr.Mechanic. That was a cool video. A lot of education and part numbers provided. Cheers from Canada
Thank You...
Great video, I did all of this today with the help of this. Thanks man.
Glad it helped

Great video! Clear, detailed and helpful with minimal fluff. Thank you!
You're Welcome...

I’ve had a Kawasaki weed eater for 22 years and I’ve never had a breakdown and it’s never had a service and it was second hand when I had it!!

Hey Steve, don't forget to remove the spark arrestor on the muffler and clean if necessary.
This video helped me replace my Stihl FS 45 carburetor. My weed eater had not been cranked in over 3 years. After following all steps it cranked immediately! The only tool i used differently was I had a Miller Lite instead of a Budweiser.
Right on Buddy...
The proper way is through the opening under the carb.
that the easy half of that operation, how would you get the new filter back on?
Thank you Steve great video.
Very welcome
some ideas...1) How to winterize the mower, weed eater, etc. 2) first use after winter for mower, weed eater, blower...
What a great comprehensive video. Thanks!!!!
