I just fixed my FS-50C today with your video - my clutch wasn't working right and I was able to disassemble the clutch OK. The drum and clutch surfaces had become glazed and I roughed them up with sandpaper and put it all back together and it worked great. Thank you!
I had a real 4 hour fight with the T27 torx screw. The end of the drive cable actually wore into the torx screw and completely stripped the head. It is difficult to see into the square clutch drum shaft, so I was at a loss as to why my driver was not engaging. After grinding down a T27, then a T25, then a T20, nothing worked. I finally used my dremmel to cut the clutch drum off the shaft. That is when I found the screw head was stripped. If your torx drivers are not working, Check the end of your drive cable to see if it is cone shaped. If so, good chance you have the same issue. The clutch drum is soft steel, so dremmel cuts easily.
My fs55 shaft was sticking and removed it to find that the plastic around it had melted. The clutch drum had quite a lot of play. Could this be the culprit as to why the plastic melted? Thanks! P.s - really good video!
Did the motor not run because of the flywheel spinning a little? Did it run good after you did this maneuver? Should a person put some lock tight on it when putting on flywheel? Mine was running great, idling an all. When I got into some heavy weeds and took them down to the dirt around a 1 foot dia. culvert, it will not start now. Plenty of spark and gas. Will not even try to fire.
After me ding all this work with the flywheel. Turns out that it was the ignition coil. It still sparked, so I thought it was good. That why I started taking off the flywheel.
That the plug out and squirt some gas in there. Then put the plug back in and try to start it. If it doesn't fire then it may be the coil. I had spark but it would not start.
@@stevebarnes8008 Ok, will try gas in spark plug hole today. Came back to watch your video again right before tearing it apart. Thanks for the information. The aluminum block you used under hammer looked like a type of valve I used to inspect with a CMM machine.
Just let you guys know, after doing all this in this video, what was wrong was the ignition coil. The reason that I thought the coil was good, was because it would still spark. Since I had checked and saw that the key was good, and I put a new carburetor on, I thought the only left to put on new was the ignition coil, so I did and it worked like a brand new trimmer!
I have this problem with a FS55R, changed the carb and plug still no start and really hard to pull starter rope so the flywheel key is like yours is just a guess if it slipped or not I have good compression and fire so I'm changing the flywheel first.
What's amazing is that the replacement parts are so cheap you could just do all of it to save on time, maintenance etc. The HT-75 pruner is grabbing and stalling. This will do! They are reliable if treated well. Good vid.
Hey thanks for going through this. I was walking home from the bar last night and someone had this trimmer just out on the curb, clearly looking to get rid of it. Does the clutch engage when the throttle is open due to the higher rpms?
Yes, it is a centrifugal clutch meaning it will not engage until the engine RPMS are high enough to sling the the clutch out against the clutch hub and starts rotating the shaft. Like how a torque converter or stall converter in a car.
The reason that I removed the flywheel was that I thought it had sheared the key and the timing was off but it wasn't. It had spark, so i figured the ignition was good. Even though it had spark, it still would not start. I replaced the ignition coil and it starts and runs great.
My t27 won't fit threw the hole not even a t25 will fit only a t20 will go threw the hole but it's to small for the bolt any suggestions for stihl fs56
Thanks my friend for your help and assistance 🙏🙏💯❤️🇵🇬🇵🇬
Happy to help
Thanks Steve. I was getting ready to drill and tap two holes 180 apart and pull it. You method is much simpler!

BEEN THERE , DOING IT NOW! GOOD CALL! THANKS!
3yrs later.. Thank you from Oklahoma..
nice video! I also like your shops "gutter shelf" to hold aerosols!
Awesome video Steve. 👌
you dont have to bang on your flywheel to reinstall. the slop will go away when you tighten down the clutch.
Thanks i have a mm55c and needed to know this.
Great video thanks for your time and effort making this video it was point on
Put a tad of grease on the drum bushing😊
Is the screw in the clutch drum fixed in the drum or does it come out. I'm thinking of replacing my drum and I can't find that screw anywhere online

Nice video. I have a KM55r (Kombi Motor). Do you happen to know if the clutch is the same? Because I'm not finding clutch anywhere.
Thank you fellow chiefs fan!!! 😂
Gracias, muchas gracias, don Esteban. Aunque no entendí la explicación pero me fue muy útil el ejemplo. Bless where You are.
HOLY CRAP! WHERE DID YOU GET THAT VICE???? I'VE HEARD OF THEM , BUT NEVER SEEN ONE? WHAT DID THATBAD ASS VICE COST? AND CAN GET ONE?

If the flywheel key sheared (even slightly) the ignition timing will be off. This will cause your engine not to run.
Any info on how much "slop" can be in the rotational movement of the flywheel to shaft??
I don't know

I used a T-27 torx bit.

@@grb1184 Hi there, i have an HT-75 pole saw too!
There are rumors that the coil of this low range of Stihl is not very good and usually fails sometimes

You can buy a brand new Stihl carb for thus trimmer for about $30.00. That is usually why they are not running.
What buying exhaust spacer ???
what bit did you use to take the screws out to get the covers off?
you will need a "torx socket" i believe....
IT's a T-27 torx.
It requires a T27 Torx bit.
T27 for the covers and most everything else except the clutch drum which takes a T25
Aprendi mucho ,gracias
What type of screw driver did you use to remove the clutch drum
T25 torx/star wrench. There's a screw in the drum where the output shaft goes.
Why was the flywheel removed in the first place ?
The reason that I removed the flywheel was that I thought it had sheared the key and the timing was off but it wasn't.
It had spark, so i figured the ignition was good. Even though it had spark, it still would not start. I replaced the ignition coil and it starts and runs great.

I have an FS56 but i have not had it apart yet so i don't know what it takes
@@stevebarnes8008 I got it had to grind down t25 to fit threw the hole thanks
Buy a T27 Torx, 1/4" hex drive bit that is 6" long. Works great!
hello, what size of torx do you use? Thank you.
my guess would be #27 as that's what's used on my Stihl fs44
Hi can this make the engine vibrate when running
Me pasa lo mismo! Vibra mucho y es molesto! Pudiste solucionar?
Muito bom o tutorial,parabéns.
Do we mix the gas with oil
Yes.pour some 2 cycle oil per 3 gallons in the gas,use at least mid grade gas
50 to 1 ratio. (50 oz gas to 1 oz oil.)
thanks for this
get that camera stable.....
