Anytime that Eurovision intro theme came on, for all of us Europeans growing up in the 60s, 70s and 80s, it was going to be a very special event to celebrate with the family, whether the Eurovision Song Contest, or the UEFA Champions’ Cup (now Champions’ League) final, or the annual New Years concert in Vienna or the royal wedding du jour. Pure nostalgia!
Yeah, exactly, something international, something out of the ordinary. I lived in a remote town in western Finland and this theme song was so magical...
Yes growing in Yugoslavia in 80s i would get chills when this music intro starts on TV..you know something special starts..i remeber " Games without borders " had this also
Music: “Te Deum”, by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, performed by the Gulbenkian Symphony Orchestra, of Lisbon. A recording from the 1960s that was used until the 1990s.
Now that everyone can make a video call to the other side of the planet for free, I wonder if people can still grasp how complex, expensive and... yes, in a way heroic was until not long ago to connect all the broadcasters of Europe so that they could air a single TV event, like a concert or a football match
I think in that era, they usually made use of satellite systems, all around the planet. So, you can maybe imagine a big plane space with some satellite dishes. The more "difficult" process it's to mix all the streams, in my opinion. Now, depending on the country you are, to connect to other countries they use a mix of satellite connections and stream through the internet. For example, the Eurovision here at Portugal, you can notice that some interviews made on another countries take more time to respond to the questions than others. Maybe, that happened because from Portugal, they connect to country A using satellite system and to country B using Internet (optical fiber, probably). I'm not an expert, but maybe this is a good explanation.
The first period with the "star beams" design had a kind of elegance. I remember that from when I was a child, usually introduced something palatial, colossal entertaining program. Not only the song contest, also other productions.
Put it back the way it was (pre 1993). It meant something then, gave you the feeling that you were sharing something with other folk around Europe. It's just not the same now.
I always get the goosebumbs from seeing and hearing the Eurovision intro 🥺 It brings back memories from the 1980s when I grew up and is so much nostalgia and tradition when Europe comes together for this moment 🇪🇺❤
It's not only from the Song Contest, but Logo and Hymn from the "Eurovision"- different TV events where different european broadcasting organisations were sharing sound and pictures. e.g. 24h of Le Mans (1955), Urbi et Orbi (frome Rome, the pope) Lots of Stuff for Germany-Swiss-Austria (ARD, SRG ORF) "Jeux Sans Frontières, Games without frontiers, Giochi senza frontiere, Spel zonder grenzen" (RAI, ARD/WDR, ORTF, NCRV, TSI, BBC, RTB, BRT) And many more ...
Yes, I searched for your reaction: I saw a fragment of the skiing in Garmisch-Partenkirchen today (New Year) and remembered this music. Always your own country and national tv-logo first and then the crucial moment of switching to a European country hosting a special event like a championship... and then the logo of that country. There was always a certain minor loss of quality... the signal came from far.
0:27 Televisión Española. The first and last time TVE hosted ESC. Hopefully, some day ESC will be back in Spain. I hope to be alive then to see it hehehe
Oh I so love it 😂 I preferred the old ones, they seem so much more refined than the "lazy" new ones; I also prefer this music, seems more solemn than the revisited march we get now 😅 I'm italian and had the RAI one. I seem to remember a red background one, but I wonder if it's just me having false memories about it 🙂 Anyway, very interesting, thank you for posting 🙂
Growing up in Yugoslavia this intro give me goosebumps ,it was before internet when different euro countries were some magic world ,you saw world with color glasses ,there was no GPS ,mobile phones so everything was adventure and some magic fairytale
My favorite times that the EBU theme song is used on TV is obviously for introducing the Eurovision Song Contest and introducing Wetten Dass..? which is a co-production between ZDF and EBU members ORF & SRF. And also the EBU theme song version in this video is actually my favorite version of them all.
@@videokaninen8995 Hmmm, I "wonder" why... History of Europe is an amazing tale of progress: sometimes incredible, many times full of suffering, but it's ours. As far as humanity goes, still on top by light years.
Along with the theme for the current affairs programme This Week and the tiny snatch of Handel's Water Music on the Anglia Television ident, this was one of the first bits of classical music to make an impression on me. It was another 10 years before I found out what it was called!
Ah, the tin knight! (Actually a large weight of sterling silver; quite an interesting story to it.) For me, I always expect "Tales of the Unexpected" after it; apparently most people "Sale of the Century". The ITV logos are very nostalgic - most of them just three to ten notes, but instantly recognisable to those of us old enough! (Thames' brass, Southern's guitar, LWT's chimes, …) Some stations had quite long classical pieces - usually over shots of their region - before startup in the morning, too. (All on UA-cam, of course!) Other classical pieces probably made an impression on you from TV adverts, though you might not have realised at the time. (Fruit and Nut case, Just one Cornetto …)
