      Napoleon, although of low Corsican nobility, was a soldier of the French Revolution who made a career in the French Republican Army who fought against the French royalists during a civil war in France, French royalists being supported by foreign monarchies hostile to the French revolution. Thus, he made himself noticed for the first time by contributing by his action to take back the port of Toulon that the French royalists had opened to the English fleet. Napoleon could thus be compared to the English Cromwell who led the armies of the parliament defeated the royal armies of the Stuart dynasty.But once he came to power, Napoleon while seeking to preserve the French revolutionary achievements as the principle of"equality among citizens, promulgated a broad amnesty for exiled aristocrats of France and contributed to the religious peace France between republicans and Catholics by signing in 1802 a concordat with the pope. If it is criticized in France for its multiple wars and the resulting conscription, it has always been considered as a peacemaker inside the country so much that a very large number of its multiple administrative reforms, Schools, legal as the Civil Code, survived in the following regimes some of which were initially hostile to it as royalty restored until our present time.
      The best example of Napoleon’s spirit of national concord was on 22 June 1815 when he had been outvoted by the parliamentary chambers elected in the parliamentary elections of April 1815 where his political opponents were in the majority (because he had had the imprudence of not suspending or dissolving parliament before his departure for the military campaign) and while his brother Lucien and the minister Carnot asked him to arrest the parliamentarians and to establish the military dictatorship with the support of the arrest which was favorable to him in order to face the invasion of the territory,Napoleon preferred to abdicate to avoid a civil war between his numerous supporters and his royalist political opponents who supported the return of King Bourbon Louis XVIII.

      So , Duke of Wellington (A great one indeed) is higher that Khalid ? Really ?
      If we measure greatness , we should look at how simple , what difficulties they faced , and how it affected history !!
      Khalid in my unbiased opinion is the greatest , far greater than Napoleon.
      He was never defeated , the greatest user of calvaries ever , a great tactician , a strong warrior himself , and most importantly ; the one who shaped the current world map of the middle east
      To sum up , it is never easy to expand your effect 1400 years ahead

    Imagine crossing the alpes when no one has ever done it, losing 65% of your army there and still winning the following battle. After all of that when people think of Hannibal, they think of Hannibal lector

    • @tristanfaulkner6003
      @tristanfaulkner6003 4 роки тому +97

      I feel sorry for Hannibal, he broke the legions of Rome and he could have actually won, which would have made history very different, but Carthage did not send enough support for him (they were not overstretched, Carthage did indeed have enough resources to overcome Rome at this point if they had actually committed to it). Hannibal's political rivals led by Hanno II repeatedly denied Hannibal's requests for reinforcements because Hanno thought Rome was unbeatable and wanted to instead focus Carthage's military on conquering territory in Africa and making peace with Rome, because Hanno had personal investments in Africa. Hanno was so convinced that fighting Rome was futile that he demoralized and delayed his own navy in the 1st Punic War and then left Hannibal's armies without backup in the 2nd Punic War. After ensuring that his own country lost both wars, Hanno then hoped to negotiate peace with Rome, but (big shocker) Rome took advantage of Carthage's weakness and took nearly everything, including all that precious African territory Hanno had claimed.
      Hannibal: Help me, we can win if you just help me! I only need enough for one more decisive strike before they recover!
      Hanno: No, we must sabotage our own armies and render ourselves defenseless. Only then will Rome leave us alone!
      Rome: *Destroys Carthage*
      Hanno: *Surprised Pikachu*

    • @mangalores-x_x
      @mangalores-x_x 4 роки тому +25

      A lot of myth and few facts about Hannibal. E.g. it is unlikely he lost 65% of his army when crossing the Alpes. It is more likely the numbers from Spain were subtracted by the numbers he arrived in in Italy, ignoring that he left troops in Northern Spain (which was not under Carthaginian influence) and only crossed with his crack troops knowing the situation in Italy was unstable for Rome (with freshly conquered Gauls and Greeks being very, very unhappy and ready to rebel).
      Also the fact he did not receive much support is also something one must see in the wider strategic context. Rome controlled the seas and thus the inner lines of transport. In return Carthage had to split its attention between defending Spain and Africa given Rome's first reaction before Hannibal's move was to go straight for those targets with two consular armies. Both those regions were essential for Carthage to continue the war. They could not easily reinforce Hannibal and those regions needed armies, too.
      Just like the Romans were split on what strategy to adopt so were the Carthaginians. The idea that Hanno was a hand wringing fool is just based on the outcome, not based on the necessities as seen at the time.
      The war also dragged on for 17 years which is many times more any other Roman enemy held out so it is also false to think Carthage was a pushover that did not know how to mobilize armies. Most Hellenic kingdoms surrendered major territory inside one or two battles. So given Carthage gave Rome nearly 40 years worth of war all over the Eastern Mediterran we have the only other power that managed to keep up with Rome for nearly two generations worth of carnage. I find it particularly fascinating in how they apparently were able to rally a multitude of people to their banner continuously and train them to fight in a disciplined fashion.

      - Anihilated the main Prussian army by himself outnumbered 3 to 1.
      - Never beaten
      - Even when the coalition was winning at the end, Davout held all of Germany and the allies were unable to beat him.
      - After the abdication of Napoléon, Davout placed his troop on the Loire river, when the allies learned the French were commanded by Davout the got scared and didn't cross the river.

      Napoleon was just in a very difficult, unfavorable situation (a bit like Hannibal), though he could still have "won" (before Leipzig though, after that it was too late and futile) but well, it's easy to say that now.

    When Napoleon was exiled for the second time, Marshal Ney was arrested and put on trial for treason. In his trial, his lawyer said that he was now Prussian and could not be tried for treason because Ney's hometown Sarrelouis had been annexed by Prussia in the Treaty of Paris. Ney ruined his lawyer's effort by interrupting him and saying "I am French and I will remain French." He was executed by firing squad in Paris. But he refused to wear a blindfold and was allowed the right to give the order to fire, reportedly saying "Soldiers, when I give the command to fire, fire straight at my heart. Wait for the order. It will be my last to you. I protest against my condemnation. I have fought a hundred battles for France, and not one against her ... Soldiers, fire!"

      I'd say Louis-Nicolas Davout was second to Napoleon, maybe even better than him (at certain points) Napoleons marshals often did most to win the battle than Napoleon, they who were in the thick of fighting and responsible for tactical victories. But Napoleon was the brain, and they were the body, so Napoleon is superior. Davout proved himself at the twin battles of Jena-Auerstadt, it has been said: " At Jena, Napoleon won a battle he could not lose. At Auerstadt, Davout won a battle he could not win." Davout was a brilliant, cunning and stern disciplinarian, who led the Grande Armée III corps, in the most trying and difficult battles, succeeding at the greatest odds. So much, that Napoleon called the III corps "my X legion." A reference to Julius Caesars tenth legion, the most reliable unit of his army.

    Should be noted that Alexander the Great is probably _the_ figure revered most by generals throughout history, from Julius Caesar and Pompey Magnus (who named himself Magnus (“the Great”) in imitation of Alexander), to Napoleon who only invaded Egypt because Alexander had done so. He’s one of the very few who can claim to have never lost a single battle, he helped his father conquer much of southern Greece then conquered all of Persia by 32, and had his army not forced him to turn back he would have continued moving east through India.
    Also, come on, Genghis Khan should be on here too, he transformed the Mongols into an army that went on to conquer much of Eurasia, in lightning speed thanks to their skill with bows and horses.
