Im not from the USA or even an American Football Fan... I have seen the film We Are Marshall a bunch of times now. What a tragic story this, a group of talented young men cut down in the prime of there lives, How Marshall got over this I do not know. To go from this and having one of the worst records in the country through the 70's and 80's to turn it round and become one of the top schools in the Country from the 90's onwards is remarkable and inspirational. Dropping the Football programme would have been too easy, it was a brave decision to continue, It was a brave decision for Red Dawson to stay on for a few years, I believe he suffered some kind of PTSD or Survivor Guilt for years afterwards. Great documentary, shame about the constant buzz in the background... Here's hoping Marshall continues to have success and that we never see anything like what happened in 1970 ever again

As most persons are spiritual in one form or another, let the post remain a tribute rather than the questioning of an afterlife. I don't always agree with certain views and am Lutheran which is more traditional than most locals in Huntington-Ashland Area but take into account the feeling of what happened.

Having always lived in West Virginia I will say that Huntington is the only place in our state that I would not live in. When I was there in the 1970s it was not as bad as it is now. The opioid crisis and crime have become much worse.
When I was going to school at Marshall in the 1970s I saw many games at the old Fairfield Stadium. One of the games that stand out was Marshall upsetting Miami of Ohio in 1976. Huntington was in a festive mood. This was a time when people went to Marshall football games to drink, not to watch football. There is a football stadium in Beckley, West Virginia that is named after Bob Pruett who coached Marshall in the 1990s. Seeing the movie "We are Marshall" was certainly emotional. I've only been to the new stadium once. That was in 1996 when Marshall defeated Northern Iowa in a Division 1-AA playoff game. Randy Moss was playing for Marshall at that time.

This accident always reminded me of of a high school bus accident in my own town and high school. Even though the bus accident happened before I was born, I grew up in its aftermath. Eight junior varsity football players and a coach were killed in my town’s bus accident. It happened on September 11, 1971; 30 years to the day before the 9/11 that the rest of the world knows. I knew several of the families who lost sons in our bus accident. Part of the reason why this particular plane crash reminds me of my town’s bus accident is because I myself am a professional pilot.

I see Red at every November memorial and finally was able to meet him as he and his wife attend a lot of games. His wife is on my “ Memories of Moeller Trio” Page in honor of Bob Harris, Jack Repasy and Mark Andrews. These were Marshall Teammates who grew up and died together in the crash.
Very sad for those who perished and grateful for those who survived. Wichita State's football team was in a serious plane crash during 1970 as well, about 6 months before. A very sad year for college football.

I mean, they sort of crossed the line with that stuff there with "hollywood's dramatic licensing" :-) Still tho, the movie at least makes more people aware of it.
This proves that God does things according to his plan . Those who were on the plane were meant to be there ; his flowers that he picked . Proud Marshall Grad and viewed wreckage as a child as my father worked over the hill and knew the backroad. Never forgot what seemed like millions of bits in the trees alone off of Coal Branch Rd. Had friends that worked with Nate Ruffin at Herald Dispatch. Resonated more once I raised three boys of my own. RIP 75 and Prayers for all affected.

a great moving documentary I live in the UK so did not know much about this tragedy until I watch the movie we are Marshall here in Manchester we had a similar tragedy back in 1958 were the Manchester United football team plane crash on take of in Munich airport as it was stopping for fuel in Germany 8 players were killed as well as 2 coaches and 10 journalists it took 10 years to rebuild the team and the team using other players and reserve and youth team players still unbelievably got to the FA cup final at Wembley just a few months later but still had a shocking and devastating impact on the city as Huntington will know too well the continue that college program and keep the team going is a great tribute to all those who lost their lives

The Perry Moss situation sounds a lot like Indiana University basketball after the firing of Coaches Knight and Sampson. A lot of players did end up leaving however.
Once saw Marshall University play in carbondale Illinois against southern Illinois didn't have any idea of the plane crash because I was only a week from my 10th birthday my condolences to all involved ❤😢
The movie had the footage of the firefighters in the turnout gear of the time, but they still had technical errors of firefighters in 2006 turnout gear, 36 years into the future.
You might have seen references to this being the last game of the season. Actually, there was to have been a game a week later (at Ohio U.?) but it had to be cancelled.
No high school or college or university coach should be so enraged, that the ones they're coaching are fearful to communicate with that particular coach.
I've seen "We Are Marshall" and they really seemed to use some "creative license" with this story. I always thought Red Dawson left Marshall for one reason... but I guess it was something completely different.

Am I crazy? Marshall did return to championships after the plane crash as this show seeks to insinuate. The championship teams happened something like 20 years after the tragedy. The football program did not lose nearly the entire team and coaching staff and returned the next year as champions. So, in my opinion, the 1990s Marshall team was a completely new entity. The only thing they shared with the 1960s and 1970s university’s football program was the university they played for and the uniforms. These are great men sharing their experiences and survival. Yet equating the 1990s Marshall University’s championship football team’s winning record to the university keeping the football program, in 1970 seems a bit misleading. I guess the true outcome of the accident is mentioned at the near closure of this video: Marshall University received funding after the plane accident. Sadly, based on this fact equated to finances, this makes me think the true outcome of all of those lost lives resulted in a university’s economic success. Honestly, on a more somber note, I think and know their lives were worth more than economic development and football success at a one time unfunded college.😢
Those former players who today feel guilty over not being with the team should thank their lucky strst that they weren't on the plane. They saved themselves from a horrible death. And, they should remeber that there was a reason they weren't on the plane. IT WASN'T THEIR TIME YET!
Saw them play Ohio State twice they put on a hell of a show in the 2004 one was the best despite the last minute FG by Ohio State, but then would lose in 2010 big time when Doc Holliday was coach. UPDATE: Ohio State played them again in the 2024 season and beat them 49-14

They were not on the plane because the players were either injury or other members of the coaching staff were scouting other players simple reasons if there was a God that plane would never have crashed

The Perry Moss situation sounds a lot like Indiana University basketball after the firing of Coaches Knight and Sampson. A lot of players did end up leaving however.
Can you please tell me what happened with Perry Moss? The name is familiar. I grew up in Charleston, WV and one summer I went to Perry Moss Day camp.
It was on Geraldo Show, Oprah Winfrey Show, Donahue in November 1990.

Once saw Marshall University play in carbondale Illinois against southern Illinois didn't have any idea of the plane crash because I was only a week from my 10th birthday my condolences to all involved ❤😢
The movie had the footage of the firefighters in the turnout gear of the time, but they still had technical errors of firefighters in 2006 turnout gear, 36 years into the future.

I've seen "We Are Marshall" and they really seemed to use some "creative license" with this story. I always thought Red Dawson left Marshall for one reason... but I guess it was something completely different.

Makes you think if the aircraft is safe enough to fly.

It was a ver underpowered aircraft. Initial and go-around climb performance were big shortcomings for the DC-9.

Am I crazy? Marshall did return to championships after the plane crash as this show seeks to insinuate. The championship teams happened something like 20 years after the tragedy.
The football program did not lose nearly the entire team and coaching staff and returned the next year as champions. So, in my opinion, the 1990s Marshall team was a completely new entity. The only thing they shared with the 1960s and 1970s university’s football program was the university they played for and the uniforms.
These are great men sharing their experiences and survival. Yet equating the 1990s Marshall University’s championship football team’s winning record to the university keeping the football program, in 1970 seems a bit misleading. I guess the true outcome of the accident is mentioned at the near closure of this video: Marshall University received funding after the plane accident. Sadly, based on this fact equated to finances, this makes me think the true outcome of all of those lost lives resulted in a university’s economic success.
Honestly, on a more somber note, I think and know their lives were worth more than economic development and football success at a one time unfunded college.😢
Those former players who today feel guilty over not being with the team should thank their lucky strst that they weren't on the plane. They saved themselves from a horrible death. And, they should remeber that there was a reason they weren't on the plane. IT WASN'T THEIR TIME YET!

Saw them play Ohio State twice they put on a hell of a show in the 2004 one was the best despite the last minute FG by Ohio State, but then would lose in 2010 big time when Doc Holliday was coach.
UPDATE: Ohio State played them again in the 2024 season and beat them 49-14

I cannot imagine being Nate or any of the other guys who had to go in an identify disfigured bodies.... First you lose a bunch of friends and then having to go to the morgue.... Poor guys must have had some serious nightmares after that.... I'm surprised they didn't get out the dental records...Or were they that disfigured? Of course these days they would just get DNA samples from everyone's mom's...

They were not on the plane because the players were either injury or other members of the coaching staff were scouting other players simple reasons if there was a God that plane would never have crashed
@@paulhynes170 God gave people free choice. Those people chose to be on that plane. Pilot error is also free choice. There still is a God but he won't change a destiny people have chosen. Many families were comforted by knowing their loved ones would see the face of God.
Celia Gorleski - I doubt people choose to die in a plane crash as their own destiny and looking at the inquest pilot error was the main reason for the crash even so I’m glad those people who lost people have found comfort if religion helps them
