My brother Randy Jackson was one of the survivors of that plane crash . I came home from school that day of the crash and saw my mama standing behind the screen door with tears in her eyes. I will never forget that day. Randy was blessed to play his senior year at WSU and in the NFL. My brother, since has gone on to be with his maker.

It’s just like the Evansville tragedy. The Wichita State and Marshall plane ✈️ crashes happened a month and eleven days after one ☝🏾 another. Wichita State have nine survivors while Marshall lost everybody. Plus, they made a movie 🎥 about Marshall which brings more attention to it.
I went to school in Shreveport, LA with Steve Moore, a linebacker who died in this tragic accident. His family moved to the Wichita area and of course I never saw him after that. Steve was a good football player and a wonderful guy, and it is so sad to watch this video. He was my friend.
I believe she graduated in 73. Small world, my uncle is a sportswriter for the shreveport times. I grew up in ruston and im back here again. i hope everything is going good for you bud.

1970 was a sad year. the Vietnam war, Kent State and Jackson State massacres, Marshall University plane crash and Wichita State plane crash 6 weeks apart. The deaths of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin to name a few. My city college football and basketball team played Marshall in the past and now currently play Wichita State in basketball. May all these events be remembered.
I appreciate your historical reflection concerning 1970. I particularly became interested in the Jackson State massacres because I knew that it involved African-Americans loosing their lives in a senseless and overzealous manner! As with other "massacres" relating to the "Civil Rights Movement," the schemes of racism to quell the moment, including hurling verbal and physical attacks were complicit acts from local (residents & law enforcers) and governmental agencies!
I am saddened to be 58 yrs old, an avid college football fan, and only now learning of this tragedy. I am a lifelong Ga bulldog fan, but from now on WSU is my second favorite team. This is heartbreaking. I will never forget.

I grew up with Richard Stine. I was stationed at Denver for training in the USAF in 1970. I heard about the crash, but I didn't learn that he was on the plane until 1971 when I got back home on leave. His death put a terrible toll on his family. His father never got over it.
I was in the marching band at what in 1970 was called Memphis State university. We played Wichita State several weeks after that terrible crash. Memphis coach Murphy played his 2nd team in deference to the Wichita State team which was at one quarter it's size. Whenever they made a first down or a successful pass, everyone in the stadium would cheer for them.
I had always known the story of Marshall but never knew anything about this , crying like a baby at this moment. God Bless both schools and God Bless the ones who died and the ones who are still living. This coming from the Volunteer nation. ❤️❤️❤️🧡🧡🧡

This was a film that I thought I would just watch with a passing interest, but it gripped me viscerally. I was 14 when it happened, and knew Loveland Pass very well. I've crossed it probably one hundred times, and when I saw the area, it struck me close to home. My daughter went to film school and worked with an Academy Award winning director. She has been to a current war torn area to talk with survivors from decades ago, and she has a feeling to respect the emotions of the person. I've also treated plane crash survivors, and they are extremely traumatic events. This was a moving tribute, and my utmost respect to all involved.
As a graduate of marshall and going through what we went through as well, knowing what they went through, we will always have that connection to wichita state. May God grant you peace

Our son's football team travelled by bus interprovincally, and that was nerve wracking enough, I cannot imagine the parents and families affected by this plane crash. The Humboldt Bronco bus crash occurred approx. 130 kms from our home, the affect it had on the families and our province, I think to some degree we have remained in mourning since April 2018.
I was a boy in Colorado when this happened and I remember it was big news but there were several facts I learned from watching this I did not know. It was a blessing that two planes were chartered and there are many colleges who do that now because they can see the differences between the Marshall tragedy and this one. @@Hof79905 Just before the exit from I 70 to US 6 look to the right and see a locked gate and an only road leading off to the north. This originally led to a storage area for equipment used for the boring of the tunnels. This road will go north but after several hundred yards keep looking left to see a cut in the trees, probably overgrown by now. This was made by a dozer working in the area in an attempt to gain access this cut uphill and then down grade again to the crash site. If i remember right, the hike took about 15 minutes.
I remember seeing this on the TV here in Virginia when I was 10years old and felt bad for the families. At a young age it was hard to understand. This was a very good memorial video to WS players and the others that passed. For those players who have passed since the making of this video, may you have peace at last and the lord be with you. I was 7 when this happened. My dad came home late that day. My mom was mad at first until she seen that he was crying. My brother and I were in bed at the time. We sneaked into the kitchen and sat on the floor listening to what my dad said as he was crying. My dad and others seen the plane crash as they were heading home after their shift. I won’t give any details of what I heard. And I will never forget that night. I am Happy to hear your cousin survived.
I was into my senior year at St. Louis U. in St. Louis Mo. Like my Billikens, WSU was a member of the Missouri Valley Conference so the tragedy hit close to home since, though we did not have a football team at SLU, we were basketball rivals and we were able to meet and even get to know some of their fans. It's hard to believe that 50 years have passed since then. That team will always be remembered. My sincere condolences to their families and friends.

As a Kansas State fan, I feel really bad for those that didn't survive and the few survivors, fans, and school. As others have mentioned, it's about time they bring back this football program as a memorial. I would cheer the hell on for them.
The following year a Colorado high school lost 8 of their junior varsity players and a coach to a bus crash. September 11,1971 Gunnison High School. Made national news and changed the way buses were manufactured

Oh wow, and I thought I was a lover of the game of football. Yaw this makes me so sad, as I had no idea. I was trying to find more information on Marshall as I love them and almost went to college there. In 90 when I was choosing my path, it was between Marshall and The University of Florida. My Father had been a basketball coach at Wilberforce, so I knew about Marshall, they left a mark on my young life. I can remember traveling with the football team at UF riding on Captain Jack, and this kind of sad situation always haunted me. I am so very sorry for this and possibly someone needs to do a movie about this, and give these special people, an opportunity as Marshall got, if that is what they desire. A movie sounds like a wonderful tribute to those lost, but not forgotten. Maybe proceeds of the ticket sales can fund bringing back the WSU football team?!
When operating a two engine aircraft over the Rockies, performance has to be respected. In an airline, one has to have a drift down alternate if one engine has to be shut down. With one engine shutdown, if the aircraft performance can not guarantee clearance of 2000’ above the terrain, an escape route (alternate airport) needs to be planned. This is an airport that the aircraft can safely run to with its weight/marginal performance. I know this isn’t the reason for the WSU crash, but was just another element the flight crew didn’t consider.
1970 must have been a bad year for football and aviation. Wichita state and Marshall both crashed. Surprised you don’t hear more of this since sports teams travel so frequently.
Went by the site many times in the eighties and nineties and never could understand how such a stupid thing the crew did. That airplane was all but worn out, overloaded and didn't have a prayer of getting over the Continental Divide. Saw one of those 404s parked across the street from Spartan in 1969 and both engines had large puddles of oil under them Crew's headset shorted out.
I heard of the Marshall crash but never the Wichita State. The plane should not of been flying that low. Sounds like pilot error to me. R.I.P. all those that perished.

Watching the sad memories like this makes me understand why we have so many laws and regulations now. The whole firm and operations of said plane admitted to wrong doing yet were never held accountable and responsible for it. No, these people didn’t have it like we have it now in modern times. This was a time where your neighbors, friends and family were ALL family coming together in need. I couldn’t imagine being a survivor of all this that took place. Losing someone sitting right next to you in a blink of an eye with no control has to be the most chilling experience and feeling. Now it’s clear why people of that era fight so hard in modern times to hold people accountable. They do this so it doesn’t happen to the next generations of family and friends.
if anybody wants a great view of the Rocky Mountains, drive from Denver to Grand Junction, CO on I-70. Or take a Greyhound bus if you don't like driving steep, windy roads

When i was 11yrs. old there was a song released in 1971 called ( D.O.A.) by the Band Bloodrock ( i remember hearing it on WHB Radio 710 A.M. Me and my older Sister and My Younger Brother) we shared a bedroom together(me and my Brother had bunkbed's) until My Parent's would later have addition's to our house and we would have our clock radio on to fall asleep with the timer on, but of course before falling asleep they played D.O.A. just month's after The Plane Crash of The Wichita State Football Team and this song and the eerie sound of the Keyboard's and Lyric's (putting those two together) Scared the CRAP out of me !! Rumor has it was about The Plane Crash of The Wichita State Football Team, but at 11yrs. old i believed it to be true (according to one of the musician's) that it was about a plane crash just not The Wichita State Football team !!
I remember the Marshall plane crash in November 1970. I was a 15 yr old kid staying all night with a friend, in Teavys Valley, WV only 20 miles from the Marshall plane crash.
I was born in October of 71 - well after both the WSU and Marshall plane crashes. Growing up in the upper Midwest, I remember learning about WSU plane crash and that a 2nd college had suffered a similar crash. I didn't really know what facts belonged to which crash then. But I firmly believe that both Marshall and WSU are forever tied in their grief.
It's a shame that this plane crash doesn't have the same ring as it did later that year when the Marshall plane crash happened. There was no fanfare for Wichita State like what they did to Marshall into a highly publicized movie and my feeling is that probably Wichita State's fan base possibly didn't want the experience that plagued Marshall after the movie came out. I'm glad they did a nice tribute to those lost.
Biggest difference of course is that Marshall was able to maintain a viable football program. WSU didn’t. We had a few winning seasons but 16 years after the crash the program was canceled. I was in third grade at the time. I remember watching Randy Jackson. He had a short NFL career and was my son’s middle school coach. Gus Grebe was a broadcast legend in WIchita. He would get so excited at football games that they hung a net below the press box window. I think it was a good, but he would get wound up. I had a history class with Dr Miner, interviewed in this piece. Very knowledgeable man regarding Kansas history.
I remember that day. Ii was only a freshman in high school. But I was watching TV I’d guess about 4.30 in the afternoon when news came. I was the one in my household who broke the news to the my family. Even as a kid I understood the magnitude of this event as told my family members. It was just a few years later that I was student on the WSU campus. I get excited about KSU and KU’s successes, but I’ll alway pull the hardest for my Shockers till the end of my days.
Absolutely not true. A tremendous amount of people nationwide are very much aware of the WSU plane crash in Silverplume. Just because it was not made in to a major motion picture does not mean people are unaware of the Shocker tragedy.
Who cares who knows? I’m happy to stumble upon this lovely documentary. There are thousands/millions of great stories that haven’t been told well yet ... to discover them is golden.

I was into my senior year at St. Louis U. in St. Louis Mo. Like my Billikens, WSU was a member of the Missouri Valley Conference so the tragedy hit close to home since, though we did not have a football team at SLU, we were basketball rivals and we were able to meet and even get to know some of their fans. It's hard to believe that 50 years have passed since then. That team will always be remembered. My sincere condolences to their families and friends.
When this happend i wasnt even born ...thank you for making this video so that we can remember all the passengers that sadly died that they ...rest in piece to every one that died that day :(

As a Kansas State fan, I feel really bad for those that didn't survive and the few survivors, fans, and school. As others have mentioned, it's about time they bring back this football program as a memorial. I would cheer the hell on for them.

The following year a Colorado high school lost 8 of their junior varsity players and a coach to a bus crash. September 11,1971 Gunnison High School. Made national news and changed the way buses were manufactured

Oh wow, and I thought I was a lover of the game of football. Yaw this makes me so sad, as I had no idea. I was trying to find more information on Marshall as I love them and almost went to college there. In 90 when I was choosing my path, it was between Marshall and The University of Florida. My Father had been a basketball coach at Wilberforce, so I knew about Marshall, they left a mark on my young life. I can remember traveling with the football team at UF riding on Captain Jack, and this kind of sad situation always haunted me. I am so very sorry for this and possibly someone needs to do a movie about this, and give these special people, an opportunity as Marshall got, if that is what they desire. This is so so sad, and I know it is 50 years later, to the family, friends, fans, alumni etc., please know I just sad a special prayer for your hearts.... Blessings Reid
I certainly watched you play! It seemed as though the 1970s saw a lot of accidents, and by the time you flew on Captain Jack, air travel was so much safer. I never knew about this crash ... so unbelievably sad...

When operating a two engine aircraft over the Rockies, performance has to be respected. In an airline, one has to have a drift down alternate if one engine has to be shut down. With one engine shutdown, if the aircraft performance can not guarantee clearance of 2000’ above the terrain, an escape route (alternate airport) needs to be planned. This is an airport that the aircraft can safely run to with its weight/marginal performance. I know this isn’t the reason for the WSU crash, but was just another element the flight crew didn’t consider.
I have always had many unanswered questions from this tragedy. My father never got over this. Never.

1970 must have been a bad year for football and aviation. Wichita state and Marshall both crashed. Surprised you don’t hear more of this since sports teams travel so frequently.
Went by the site many times in the eighties and nineties and never could understand how such a stupid thing the crew did. That airplane was all but worn out, overloaded and didn't have a prayer of getting over the Continental Divide. Saw one of those 404s parked across the street from Spartan in 1969 and both engines had large puddles of oil under them Crew's headset shorted out.

I heard of the Marshall crash but never the Wichita State. The plane should not of been flying that low. Sounds like pilot error to me. R.I.P. all those that perished.

Watching the sad memories like this makes me understand why we have so many laws and regulations now. The whole firm and operations of said plane admitted to wrong doing yet were never held accountable and responsible for it. No, these people didn’t have it like we have it now in modern times. This was a time where your neighbors, friends and family were ALL family coming together in need. I couldn’t imagine being a survivor of all this that took place. Losing someone sitting right next to you in a blink of an eye with no control has to be the most chilling experience and feeling. Now it’s clear why people of that era fight so hard in modern times to hold people accountable. They do this so it doesn’t happen to the next generations of family and friends.
if anybody wants a great view of the Rocky Mountains, drive from Denver to Grand Junction, CO on I-70. Or take a Greyhound bus if you don't like driving steep, windy roads

R.I.P. To All and My Sincere Condolence's To All Family and Friend's !! When i was 11yrs. old there was a song released in 1971 called ( D.O.A.) by the Band Bloodrock ( i remember hearing it on WHB Radio 710 A.M. Me and my older Sister and My Younger Brother) we shared a bedroom together(me and my Brother had bunkbed's) until My Parent's would later have addition's to our house and we would have our clock radio on to fall asleep with the timer on, but of course before falling asleep they played D.O.A. just month's after The Plane Crash of The Wichita State Football Team and this song and the eerie sound of the Keyboard's and Lyric's (putting those two together) Scared the CRAP out of me !! Rumor has it was about The Plane Crash of The Wichita State Football Team, but at 11yrs. old i believed it to be true (according to one of the musician's) that it was about a plane crash just not The Wichita State Football team !!
I guess this was overshadowed by the 1970 Marshall plane crash as I've never heard of it until now .... RIP.

I remember the Marshall plane crash in November 1970. I was a 15 yr old kid staying all night with a friend, in Teavys Valley, WV only 20 miles from the Marshall plane crash.
I've heard of the Marshall crash a million times...but never this one. Not sure why.
Because a portion of the team died in one of the two aircraft, and not tts entire team in the same plane with Marshall.
I was born in October of 71 - well after both the WSU and Marshall plane crashes. Growing up in the upper Midwest, I remember learning about WSU plane crash and that a 2nd college had suffered a similar crash. I didn't really know what facts belonged to which crash then. But I firmly believe that both Marshall and WSU are forever tied in their grief.

It's a shame that this plane crash doesn't have the same ring as it did later that year when the Marshall plane crash happened. There was no fanfare for Wichita State like what they did to Marshall into a highly publicized movie and my feeling is that probably Wichita State's fan base possibly didn't want the experience that plagued Marshall after the movie came out. I'm glad they did a nice tribute to those lost.
Biggest difference of course is that Marshall was able to maintain a viable football program. WSU didn’t. We had a few winning seasons but 16 years after the crash the program was canceled. I was in third grade at the time. I remember watching Randy Jackson. He had a short NFL career and was my son’s middle school coach. Gus Grebe was a broadcast legend in WIchita. He would get so excited at football games that they hung a net below the press box window. I think it was a good, but he would get wound up. I had a history class with Dr Miner, interviewed in this piece. Very knowledgeable man regarding Kansas history.

I remember that day. Ii was only a freshman in high school. But I was watching TV I’d guess about 4.30 in the afternoon when news came. I was the one in my household who broke the news to the my family. Even as a kid I understood the magnitude of this event as told my family members. It was just a few years later that I was student on the WSU campus. I get excited about KSU and KU’s successes, but I’ll alway pull the hardest for my Shockers till the end of my days.
Every time I drive up I-70 approaching the Eisenhower Tunnel, I always salute or tip my cap when I pass by the Memorial. YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN.

Absolutely not true. A tremendous amount of people nationwide are very much aware of the WSU plane crash in Silverplume. Just because it was not made in to a major motion picture does not mean people are unaware of the Shocker tragedy.
Who cares who knows? I’m happy to stumble upon this lovely documentary. There are thousands/millions of great stories that haven’t been told well yet ... to discover them is golden.
I happen to be camping (boondocking) about ten miles from the crash site as I watch this film…

How come this crash wasn’t as known as the Marshall plane crash? In fact I only know this happened because of one football video. And are there any other college football tragedies less known? No disrespect I’m just wondering and RIP to all that were killed in the gold plane.
