    Hey Shara! Nice job! For the past 40 years I've been a solid wood project builder. Thanks to your inspiration and easy to follow plans, my current project is mostly birch plywood. I do not miss all the messy glue-ups, trying to keep panels straight, sanding, not having to worry so much about wood movement! Thanks for showing an "old dog" new tricks. As always, have a great weekend Shara!

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  2 роки тому +1

      RIGHT?! People always ask why I use so much plywood and look down on it for some reason, but, while I love the look of the solid oak here, I could have built this from plywood in less than half the time avoiding glue ups and sanding. I highly doubt I have anything to teach you with 40 years of experience, but I'm glad I inspired you to give the plywood a go on your latest project :) I really appreciate you watching and hope you have a great weekend as well!

  • @keats182
    @keats182 2 роки тому

    The creative process is organic. When you're making something new, you're always going to have to figure some things out as you go along. You overcame each challenge and it came out fantastic. I get grief from my friends sometimes for being a hoarder but I buy large amounts of items I tend to use in every project. If I see something on sale or have a coupon, I just pick some up whether I need it or not at that moment. It's cut down on a lot of those interruptions.
    The curse of people who make things is that we always know what we envisioned and then see all the little things that didn't fit that vision. But know one else knows that. Thank you for bringing us along and showing your process.

    It looks great. I think you did a good job dealing with the unexpected problems. It seems like most of my builds don’t go as planned and part of being a woodworker is learning how to work around the unexpected problems, and also not focusing as much on the small imperfections that got noticed during the build. I didn’t imagine you would be able to keep to the same schedule with that sort of project, though it sounds as if you would have had little trouble doing even that if you could have gotten supplies fast enough.

I've built about six bookshelves following plans from New Yankee Workshop, none of which came out perfect, but the one we appreciate the most has glass doors on it. I built the door frames and my Wife took them down to the glass shop where they cut the glass to fit perfectly. We've enjoyed that cabinet for a very long time. The cabinet turned out great Shara! You should be very happy with this, especially since you didn't have all the supplies you wanted. You made do with what you had and created something beautiful. I've been so inspired by your projects that I ordered an 18 volt circular saw and the Kreg cutting guides. I will get them next week and am excited to build some bigger projects. I have a nice SawStop cabinet saw but don't have the desire to wrestle with big sheets of plywood. You know, as problem after problem kept creeping up, and most of them unforeseen, I felt so bad for you. I kept thinking of how something reminded me of myself, how that’s something I would do, or “been there, done that”! It was only as the video was nearing its end that I realized that this must be how people always see me, like I’m an affable nitwit!! (Just me, not you…you are allowed one really rough build…all of mine are really rough on me! 😊).
    Keep your head up Shara, I think that even though it’s not up to your normal standards, you are going to do whatever you can to fix that. Then this piece will always hold a special place in your heart…maybe a ‘specially dark place! But a special place nonetheless! 😉

    Thank you for the video! Did you move the router completely manually? without any rods to guide you?

      Yes, I used a rabbeting bit to cut the rabbets. A rabbeting bit has a bushing that runs along the edge of the piece so that you cut a consistent rabbet. So no other guides are needed.
