I don't think it's in the good keeping and sense of 'informed' opinion to make such a long video and then drop 'made badly' in the title AH. It just panders to the usual things I frankly find boring now: ''the trees, the Anti-aliasing, the (lack of) Voice-acting, the draw-distance'' etc. I understand your critique tries to be fair but PLAs meta-ratings (and overall reception) speaks for itself. In the spirit of ''Gameplay 1st'' regardless of 'how rich' a Company is: I'm never too fussed about visuals or the 'sub Unreal 4 engine' limitations.
1:02:50 Plus, on points such as this - this is what I don't get about general critique in the Community. For Years, even decades We ask for ''higher difficulty in Pokémon games''. So then the Forces of Nature return in all their HD glory - and actually the fight scenarios are brilliantly laid out here - yet nope! People still complaining. I mean, you have your opinions AH and yes of course there's certainly a few 'Quality of Life' improvements Gamefreak should make. But in cases like these, you're missing the point.
@@netweed09 Dunno why you responded to a list of music and footage credit but okay...? Higher difficulty should not equate to more tedious, it should equate to a meaningful and thought out challenge. For example, Noble Pokemon battles well illustrate how to craft a meaningful and unique challenge for the player to overcome. But putting the player and target in an open area with a target who flees at even the slightest trigger, and who only even appears during particular weather you need to just reset over and over for again until you get the right RNG, this is not a meaningful challenge. That's like if a title came out that made even more Pokemon act like roaming legendaries and be absolute pains to catch, and saying "you've been asking for higher difficulty, why are you complaining?!"
@@AcousticHarmonia Hy, thanks for the response. I didn't open and catch the Read more properly there sorry lol. Anyhow, I see what you mean from a QOL or 'logical' point of view but We all (should) know Gamefreak love a bit of jank. And honestly, these Genies are meant to be mischeivious and frustrating (honestly, theyre not _so_ difficult) to nail down. So yea, I for one don't mind the 'baggage' but its clear Gamefreak generally need to address QOL issues.
you guys do realize they are updating pokemon for home for bdsp and pla but i also wanna say something else you can get manaphy in bd sp with out buying it early just wait for the pokemon home update
About the Spiritomb Wisps: Iirc you can actually go back to the npc that gave you the quest in jubilife and she'll tell you how many you have to collect in each area, and you said that sometimes you have to get really close to make the wisp appear, that only happens during the day, if you search for them during the night the render distance is increased and this is not a bug it's on purpose it makes the task easier, but I agree that the game needs to indicate on the map where you got wisps
Was about to write the same comment 😂, doesn't give the game any extra points though since it's never clearly indicated that you can do this. Should've just been Indicated on the map or under the wisp icon.
I like Mario Odyssey’s take on it, where you have to spend to get the location of one. So you‘re still encouraged to experience the joy of exploration, but once you stop finding them, you can still easily weed out the last few.
a fun fact that makes this even better/worse is that you have the exact number of max markers stamps you can put on your map lines up to the wisps. this implies they wanted and planned for you to chart them all, with no extra stamps for anything else to help it be charted that way. wanna switch to putting down neat pokemon spot stamps? too bad, because now you wont have enough to also chart the max number of wisps until the quest is done. when i found this out i nearly ate my switch
You know if Pokémon really wanted to add voice acting they could just do something similar to genshin where they replace your name with a more generic term like traveler… THEY WOULD LITERALLY JUST HAVE TO CALL YOU TRAINER!!!
Or like in Fire Emblem Three Houses, where different characters call you different things depending on their personality or relationship with you. Like, most characters call you "Professor" but Claude calls you "Teach" and your dad calls you "Kid". Or they could even just, y'know... not have characters refer to you by name when they speak _to_ you, like in actual conversations. Seriously, I've had conversations that lasted hours where neither me nor the other person said each other's name, because _we know who we're talking to!!_ And if someone is talking about the player character to another person, they can just refer to you as "they", because despite what idiots who don't understand grammar think, "they/them" is a perfectly valid gender-neutral singular pronoun! But no, that would require a modicum of effort, and we can't very well expect *that* from a Pokemon game, now can we?
It always amazes me how adults will happily tell other adults that criticise new pokemons games that they "just grew up" whilst demonstraiting that they themselves never did because they are unable to accept that their childhood franchise might have some flaws.
Ehh, that's universal. A lot of people can't self reflect and embroiden products into their identity. At the same time there are some adults that seem to just nitpick every little thing other adults do and enjoy. People's priorities and cares are different. Some people will make 3.5 hour essays on their complaints while others will just turn their brains off and have fun. But that can easily reverse if the topic switches to music or cooking or hiking.
Yeah, glad someone pointed it out! I just paused the video to stare at my lil clefairy figure and, sure enough, there they are. Togepi has similiar eyes too. You could argue that since they have the same eye shape, but togepi has the weird lines "drawn on" rather than like if they were eyes, maybe it was an oversight on the Clefairy line. But they look just like their actual eyes so it could also just have been done on purpose! It's a little thing from the old designs that I really love a lot, personally :D
I've seen the official art, but then I looked at the vid and I think I see why he says that. On the official Sugimori art and arguably even the Dream World pieces of artwork, there's merely an indentation marked by a curved line arround the top left/right brow of the eyes (on whichever side closer to the ears than to the nose). On the Legends model, it instead is a perfect circle around the eyes...???
Normally the little “circles” around the eyes are used to show a character is panicked/nervous. Which fits, since Clefable hide from people and avoid battling as much as possible
34:15 There is actually dialogue in the game that you can stumble upon with Cyllene where Kamado talks about disbanding the Galaxy team when it is no longer needed, and Cyllene says that she will keep its memory alive for future generations to remember. I guess the implications are that Cyrus based his team off of the Galaxy Expedition team. Edit: Also the thing where clefairy and clefable's eyes look weird is intentional, its been like that since the 2D days.
Yeah, this video has some issues because he definitely didn’t explore/research the game’s story and gameplay fully, since he also got some of the issues he had over the Spiritomb Wisp sidequest incorrect, too. I agree with a good number of his points on this game regardless tho.
@@komarunaegi7460 Yeah same, I agree with many of the criticisms he had for the game. The game felt like a tech demo, a very fun tech demo that I can see myself revisiting and having a blast with time and time again. I hope Scarlet and Violet improve upon what Legends brought to the table, the 4 player Borderlands-esque coop in an open world sounds interesting.
@@komarunaegi7460 especially when it came to the story, by the time of the postgame it's pretty clear Arceus sent you to stop Volo since no-one else can match him in terms of battling skill and to help the people of the past build their relationship with pokemon that leads to modern Sinnoh.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's been that way since Platinum. Even in that game, Giratina had to drag Cyrus to the Distortion World because of Cyrus trying to take control of Dialga and Palkia.
@@oranjaglad8648 It is implied now that Giratina acted like that in Platinum because it was a repetition of events, one that he knew wouldn't end well for anyone involved, so he acted exactly like the Gengar in the mystery dungeon example used in the video. Too bad he missed that connection.
@@Mushie_lol I mean it's only implied Giratina is some sort of demon (what with its design and it being banished to the Distortion World), but other than that, Giratina isn't evil; it's just destructive when things get out of hand.
So it was fog doing me in the whole time? I thought it was Alphas and their wild might boost or whatever its called. Its not too descriptive and says they have boosted stats. I assumed one of their boosted stats was Evasion.
@@KillaBryx When you’re in battle you can press the plus sign to see the information on the Pokémon involved in the fight as well as the active weather effect if there is one.
@@terraventusaqua123 Ahh yes and I told myself I was gonna scope out all the weather effects, changes to status effects, and stat boosts but you just forget lol. Like i wanted to see if there was a difference between snow and hail or rain or thunderstorm. Rain disappointed me by just nerfing fire moves. Wtf? And the stat boosts were usually vague as hell. "Boosts att and defense stats." Ok so is that att, spA, def, Spdef boosted by 1 stage? Is it a 1 stage or 2 stage boost. When it says boosts all stats does accuracy and evasion count lol.
PLA literally does Volo’s character precisely zero favours, they do him so dirty. You can *kinda* find his reasoning for his plans if you really squint and look but a lot of them are a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ kind of situation. Which REALLY sucks because if you look at these clues and piece it together then I’d wager that Volo is almost as complex as N as a villain. Volo’s stated goal for wanting to recreate the world is because the world is full of suffering. He wants to dethrone Arceus and create a world that has no suffering because he is hyper aware of all of the cruelty and injustice around him. Volo feels as though Arceus is an inadequate, apathetic god and he’s pissed at it. Volo also does have an obsession with trying to find answers to a lot of impossible questions, it is never explained why he has this obsession though. He is however, hinted at actually being a kind person at heart both with him being kind and gentle when he really doesn’t need to be, his photograph with Togepi and his team. His team that consists of: 3 friendship evolutions and his partner being a god damn Togekiss, him befriending Spiritomb a very misunderstood Pokémon and having an Arcanine, a Pokémon featured in one of the quests that has themes of death and bereavement, everlasting love and sacrifice. Of course Volo pretty much has a carbon copy of Cynthia’s team but still… any antagonist, like Silver for example, who was meant to be seen in a sympathetic light always have at least one friendship evolution on their team. Through this game all about making connections though one thing stands out: Volo is incredibly lonely. He never states this but he is. You don’t see him with any other characters, he doesn’t talk to anyone or even hang around his coworkers. Cogita, who appears to be very clearly related to him straight up loathes him and is really cold and abrasive when the protag only knows Volo as someone who is helpful, kind and almost charming. If you interact with other characters within PLA pretty much all of them have connections to other characters and have a history with them. Whereas when Volo disappears no one acknowledges his lack of presence, not even his boss or coworker say anything. No one notices that he’s gone apart from Cogita who immediately calls him a scoundrel and then quickly moves on from the one-sentence acknowledgment and Laventon who speaks with him for the last time when you go to confront Giratina. So its pretty obvious that Volo is a really… lonely person for someone who is so charismatic and friendly, like it seems very odd. Which leads us into the last crumb of clues game freak left us; the old verses and some and Volo’s dialogue. Volo states that he is a descendant of the ancient Sinnoh people, seemingly blessed by Arceus or at least worshipers of Arceus. And he states that he suffered in the past and also believes that his level suffering is the case for literally everyone (the implications of this is pretty dark actually). The Old Verses that you dig up state that: long ago the Celestica People were in Hisui and then all of a sudden they left for reasons the player isn’t given. They also state that people came from across the seas and appropriated the beliefs, culture and names of the Celestica people and used the name ‘Celestica’ when they had no right to. So basically colonisation. This is even reinforced when Kamado when he apologises of Mount Coronet says “for the good of pokemon and the Celestica People”. However, Old Verses state that Celesticans left long ago and the only ones we know of are Volo and Cogita, of which no one really knows who they are. So Kamado is talking about the clans who appropriated an entire race’s identity. Holy shit. Then its eluded that the clans split off and *war* broke out due to a difference of beliefs of basically the same religion. So if we assume that the ‘Ancient Sinnoh People’ are the Celestica people then that means that Volo is descended from people who were colonised and are no longer around and also grew up in times of war. If we take a look at history and how native peopke were treated in colonised countries then… fucking yikes. If these assumptions are correct, and for PLA they’re not a huge leap, then Volo’s past is incredibly tragic. Like… where is his family? what ‘heartbreak’ did he experience? I can only guess that everyone Volo loved dearly is dead and I… really feel for the guy because now he just works a retail job to get by and pursue his passions and because he was so isolated he got in wayy too deep and by the time he finds someone to connect with then well… it’s already too late. If Game Freak had bothered to do more than just leave context clues and little crumbs of information then this could have had the potential to be a VERY powerful, emotional and complex post game. To travel with Volo and learn more about him and what happened to Hisui and why everyone is so terrified of Pokemon. It could have answered just soooo many questions. You could have had the chance to make a genuine connection with him. The protag’s entire purpose in Hisui is to bring people (and pokemon) together and introduce empathy essentially yet we don’t get the option to treat a clearly very wounded man with any empathy at all despite him as being established as one of your friends who sticks his neck out for you. I just- PLA leaves *hints* of story. They elude to stuff and this isn’t good enough. Like… they HAVE to tell us this stuff. Because if they don’t then all tehy are doing is opening a character up to being simplified, watered down and completely misread. All they are doing is creating a collection of writing prompts and forcing the fandom to draw their own conclusions which like… no! That’s just such lazy storytelling and wasted potential. Characters like Volo and Cogita are really, really interesting and its such a huge shame that game freak just didn’t go into depth with them.
His loneliness is what stuck with me as well, even down to his final lines where states that he was alone in contrast to us. The fact that he can’t see the friends that he must have made in his friendship evolutions really rings to his obsession with that. Even to subtle details of how he describes the ginko guild as separate. Having him be so obsessed with the history of the celestica people gives him that connection to others, either having found this connection for being alone before or otherwise, reinforcing him as an endling to the celestica in his mind makes for much more of a tragic character. We have further information to suggest that the celestica moved away from Arceus - perhaps he both blames Arceus for being alone and sees their forsaking as justification for the world ending. And then we have his choice to battle us, as opposed to asking to study all of the plates whilst he has our trust. Letting us prove the the world does not need to end, in place of simply completing his own goals, gives the shape of a far more nuanced and interesting character - which is never explored. As a final point, one of the old verses mentions that the name of the celestica lives on - but not the heart. Perhaps herein lies cogita’s frustration for volo adopting the name; or for volo letting us prove that the world can regain that heart. There is very much the impression of a deep and brilliant character, but this is beyond subtlety - we are absolutely starved of the exploration he deserves. (But then again, with Pokemon character writing in mind, maybe it’s best left to imagination and interpretation).
@@thelegacyofgaming2928 Eh, either way, the point stands that if someone fixating on an aspect of the game the video's about is a weirdo that needs another hobby... why doesn't this commenter, or the video creator?
Giratina, a creature that was banished for an unknown amount of time, sees Pokémon Infront of it without hostility... Not knowing company for so long it greeted the ones who showed it kindness... It then looked at the trainer and thought "Oh, I suppose you are the one who has bound them". And proceeded to attempt to set them free.
I loved that BotW often didn't play any music whatsoever. It was a bold decision, that made me get immersed into game much more. When you are in the wild exploring, you don't hear any music. What you do hear is rich nature sounds, and BotW captured it perfectly. I can't speak for Legends Arceus, since I didn't bother playing it, but I would definitely not count this approach as something bad
The music in BotW is treated as an equal to the world sound-effects and the menu sound effects (Sorry if those aren’t the right terms, let me know what its really called if you know!) and it works SO WELL. The sound design in BotW is one of the main things that helps it big open world feel alive.
BOTW Music was the coolest part of the game it’s always depending on when and where you are and it’s minimal when you are alone and their isn’t anything you encounter.
BOTW’s in my opinion lack of music hurt it in the end. I’m all for quiet moments when the time is right, but that game has very little in terms of memorable music. I can’t think of a single track besides the main theme and Sidon’s theme that I can remember off the top of my head.
@@ExtraordinaryFate personally I don't think music has to be an instantly recognizable memorable track to deliver a great experience. It's a personal preference of course, but personally I can't imagine BotW with a lot of really distinctive and distracting tracks.
@@ExtraordinaryFate, I really disagree with you and challenge you to look at the OST if you’ve finished the game already, while the field theme is what you hear the most at the beginning you’ll eventually hear that less when you fight the many bosses, visit shrines, stay at the towns/cities/villages completing quests, get a horse, fight enemies, go against divine beasts, encounter guardians.
While I agree with the majority of these critiques, some have justification for why they are the way they are. I noticed 8 points like this that I'll mention below. 1) Why the player is chosen instead of the clans or town guard? Because the clans don't use pokeballs, so they aren't skilled at capturing. As for the guard, he can catch some of the weak ones that tend to find their way into the village, but he's not skilled enough to handle the more dangerous pokemon out in the field. He can train the ones he does catch just fine, but that's not the same as being able to catch stronger ones in the heat of battle. 2) How did the good Galaxy team become evil team Galactic? The Galaxy team would have been disbanded at some point, due to not being needed. The name would live on as a general symbol of progress, so Cyrus used the symbol to represent his twisted version of progress by rebuilding a new world after destroying the old. 3) Fast travel between the 5 areas isn't quite the same as travel between cities in past games. Each area in Arceus is closer to an entire region from old games, so you're closer to asking why can't you fast travel between Kanto and Johto. But even in GSC, you had to cross over to the other region first before being able to swap maps. 4) Wisps show up better at night, which is why you can see them from much farther away at night. This makes sense, since they are a light source as well as being a spirit (thematic to night). 5) The satchel issue seems more like an issue you caused for yourself. The average player will interact when an NPC calls out to them, even if they already have an idea of what will be said. The only reason you didn't was because you were frustrated at how long the tutorial was going (which is a legitimate flaw). If he had called out to you earlier on in the tutorial, before you could get sick of it, you probably would't have skipped him. But you being too annoyed to respond to him doesn't mean they didn't convey it properly. 6) Why can't you run during boss fights? To be honest, I didn't even know there was a running feature until this video. But it would take away from the whole "dodge to avoid damage" setup. It also works thematically, since you are standing up to a frenzied creature instead of running, so you only dodge attacks and square up to face it again. 7) Why don't Adaman/Irida have ball throwing animations? I believe you already answered that yourself by saying they don't use pokeballs. Though the pokemon being gone until the battle is a valid critique with that in mind. Especially when Mai always has Munchlax with her. 8) Clefairy's eyes have always been like that. The official art shows half circles on the outside of its eyes (like Krillin in DBZ). It was never a fully closed circle around them, but that's what it's conveying.
Yea and complaining about controls seems he wanted to complain more. We all played new games before of any type. And we fumble and learn. But nearly 80 hours in and still mistaking being on a ride pokemon to sneak on another pokemon in the grass. Sorry, but I just think he's really bad at the game and using bad controls as a justification.
@@MegaBusterDudethe only control problem I ever had was when you approach a cliff, the "climb down" button is different depending on whether you're already on Sneasler or not. The button to have Sneasler climb down is the dodge roll on foot so its very easy to accidentally catapult yourself off the cliff and have to panic call Braviary 😅
It does mean they didn't convey it properly, the tutorial was too long causing people to be bored. This means they retain information poorly. This conveys information in such a bad way you're likely to forget it or outright miss it.
@@garytina7009 You can climb, swim, and fly with 0 limitation in Arceus, whereas in botw you have a stamina meter for every action, padding the gameplay through menuing to fill stamina back in a best case scenario. In legends Arceus, you can cycle through any field item in real time. You can also collect items from a distance, not just metallic items like in botw, and instantly. While it was possible for botw to have better traversal and other conveniences that Arceus has, it was just not possible for botw to have better collectables. Korok seeds and spirit orbs are garbage. They might as well be stars from super Mario 64 as they offer 3 upgrades total, but what could they have done? A single Pokemon offers countless moves and fairly deep statistics that increase as you just simply use them, and they each develop different stats differently and they each have different move pools. So each find between them is a different experience and their entertainment value of just experimenting with them can last hours, they even perform differently in weather. It is quite hilarious as you say because as Legends Arceus stands completely gutted of content compared to USUM and even sword and shield, it still ends up being an objectively better open world adventure game just by a default of being a Pokémon game. The Pokémon company didn't even have to try and they really didn't, and it's still hilariously better. I couldn't really care less about Arceus either, being open world is just the biggest trendy gimmick ever in this age of gaming. I really only care about a game's different mechanics and gameplay variety which Arceus doesn't offer, I prefer the 3DS, DS eras of Pokémon and 3DS era of Zelda, so my perspective is on the fence.
You got some of these wrong: - Volo does imply heavily on the reason as of why he tried to do what he did tho. Specially regarding his lineage. - The lucky sisers were not trying to help, they just wanted to but were too prideful to actually do it. - You don't need to fight 15 magnemites within distortions to complete the pokedex entry as there are some trainers with magnemites on the world. Actually, there's no point of doing any tasks after getting max research, tasks are just suggested ways to get to 10 anyway. (Also, I'm pretty sure the pokedex red arrows are explained somewhere in the game, because I knew what it meant and I didn't figure it out nor searched for it online) - You can check how many wisps are left in each area talking to the kid that gave you the quest. Also, wisp render distance is related to the time of the day, as most of them become more visible during the night, information also given by the kid who gives you the quest. - Wing balls are not designed for range (tho it can be used that way and I do agree it would benefit the game if it worked that way), it was design for air catch. - There is a button to change targets. Most often than not it will not change on it's own unless you use it, which may be bad in some cases but good in others as you can rely it will keep locking on the one you manually selected unlike in some other games. - Many of the things that happens in the footage you show on the background are bugs that were already patched out. When I played I faced none of these issues. (There is still room for argument that they shouldn't be there in the first place tho, as always) Many nitpicks aside, some valid criticism was made here. I wouldn't go as far as to call it an "alpha build" (as funny as it is in the context of this game), but it really feels like it was an experiment that they didn't want to put too much resources into it for the case it flopped. Now that they saw it works, I'm expecting that the next game in the sub-series to be taken more serious by TPC as a whole and end up being of higher quality in general.
I would also like to add to this thread -the battle system is BAD, it is not balanced, it is not fun, it is much worse than old battle systems. Wolfe has a fantastic video on this, but the chance of getting hit multiple times with literally no chance of action is not fun! It would be really bad if competitive players were expected to play in that format of battles
@@thomasjallen1 Yeah that’s the one thing that confuse me how come I can go twice sometimes while the enemy can too, it is because you have a speed to go twice or The strength and agility move or Rng luck.
@@thomasjallen1 Digimon Cyber Sleuth had a similar system and worked fine there. You could train your mon to be the one doing multiple moves in a row or being able to tank them, no problem there. @@thomasjallen1 I'd be fine with the system if it was at least consistent. The hud will often say that the enemies light attack will give you two turns next but then you just don't. Of course this bug never happens in your favor
@@kanyeet5162 Pokemon fans pretty much settle for the bare minimum at this point. Legends is what Pokemon should have been for a very long time and it's exactly what people have been asking for, so it doesn't surprise me that people are willing to excuse pretty much every major flaw of the game. If a game with this kind of quality dropped for pretty much any other franchise it would have been made a complete laughing stock.
@@Forged4War206 You do realize pokemon has always been on handhelds up to a few games ago, right? They never had the chance to do something like this since their games were always on Nintendo's underpowered handhelds
Regarding music there is also how Jubilife Village theme gets more layers as get more requests done and get villagers closer to Pokemon. Otherwise if you ignore side quests you will just have the og Jubilive Village theme. I like music in battle changes tempo when item/Pokemon Party menu. Having a muffled or slowed like feeling while you ponder your options. Also Volo's theme that plays before the battle after revealing his true self is a creepy distorted/dissonant remix of Cynthia Battle Theme. While his battle theme is a remix of her Encounter theme. Show just in musical sense reflects the reverse in morals to his descendant.
Oh that's so cool! I hadn't noticed Jubilife music growing despite having my music always on. I really love the music in battle changes, it also shows that the game is paused while you're in those menus. I also love that it gets quieter/muffled when you're crouched in grass.
I loved the progressive theme song mechanic.. the first time I experienced it, while playing BOTW. I know Arceus is often unfairly compared to the aforementioned game, but after playing through the truly special and memorable quest that was the building of Tarrey Town, Jubilife’s theme just kinda feels like a hollow imitation.
Around the halfway point in the video, you mentioned how BOTW’s “lack” of overworld music kind-of felt odd for you; while I see where you’re coming from and somewhat agree, I think BOTW’s primary overworld OST being ambient piano solos and of the likes actually enhanced the game. It personally gave me a sense of peace and the overworld music felt like it was a part of the environment. I think it not really “existing” was intentional, though I can see how an overworld theme not constantly blaring in a Zelda game can be off-putting. I love the video otherwise and I really love the content you put out!
I did not like Breath1 (speaking as a fan since Majoras Mask lol) for very different reasons. But one of the very few things I loved was it's ambience. And when 'music' was used, it was Quirky, charming and fit the overall theme of the game so well. 9/10 for the music implementation. Sadly, (and it does hurt) I'd overall give Breath1 a 6/10. Too 'un-Zelda' like, the lack of Dungeons for me is a crime I cannot ignore as per my personal enjoyment and expectations from a Zelda game. Hope Breath2 improves a lot with content.
I do think that the same level of adventurous intensity of music in the Zelda series wouldn't have been as fitting in Breath of the Wild what with how much time you spend exploring the open world. However, I do feel like it'd be better served with at least something chill in a style like Octopath Traveler, where it's never in your face but helps to build the world around you and is an overall relaxing theme. I do definitely understand where the design choice for BoTW's soundtrack came from though, and have seen a few videos out there from those way way more knowledgeable about music than I, so I feel like I respect what it was going for, but feel like it's not really for me. Anyway I appreciate the support and glad to hear you enjoy the content
I personally love the silence, it really creates the feeling of an empty apocalypse that is BOTW, a world that is vast and lonely. The story of the game isn't an upbeat fun adventure, it''s about a sense of loss, something being missing, wandering around trying to regain those pieces, and the subtle to no music when you're on your own really fulfills that imo
@@LittleSprout73 I mean it's ambient and has it's strengths. But the excuse for the 'emptiness' did not need to be so: Stalker 2, Metro and Fallout4 prove that post-apocalyptic games do not have to be a barren repetitive chore where all your weapons pointlessly keep breaking (no reward structure in game) and that the plot is so threadbare.
@@netweed09 I enjoyed Breath of the Wild thoroughly, but I agree when you say that it feels too un-Zelda like. I think it's actually more fair to compare BOTW to other open-world games instead of other Zelda titles. Comparing BOTW to... say, Twilight Princess, feels too unfair because those two games don't even feel like they're part of the same series. Change is good and I'm very glad Zelda is trying to shake things up, but I think they went a bit too overboard
As someone who has dabbled in hacking this game I can confirm a method similar to a paint bucket tool was used for the pokemon it even makes recoloring shinies (or even the regular forms) as easy as selecting a color and changing it.
2:37:52 This is such a bad example of a bad model since clefable has always had circles around their eyes. They're even visible in the official artwork. I suppose you could chalk it up as a bad interpretation of the artwork since previous gens had the circles drawn on as a texture rather than being actual indents, but it's still not a wrong model.
Still looks weird, all of Clefables artwork inclueding the cards have a thin half circles drawn around it's eyes; I have never seen artwork of clefable with shaded in indents going all the way around it's eyes.
Nah, it's still bad. The fact it's never been portrayed that way throughout all official artwork, 3D models, AND 2D sprites means it isn't meant to look that way. If the intent was for the Clefairy line to have round circles around their eyes, it would have been depicted that way at any point in time before this. It also just inherently looks off-putting. Intentional or not, it's not in line with anything else and looks wrong.
In regards to Clefairy and Clefable’s eyes, check out their other artwork. They have always had that line next to their eyes going back to original Gen 1 artwork. So in reality, those “placeholder circles” are actually intentionally included due to them being part of the original design.
I have been with Pokemon since it came out in in the 1990s, I love it so much, but I wish they would just f#%^ing slow down a bit... give the fans a bit to enjoy the game, sometime to breathe, and use that time themselves to put more polish and finesse on the games they're already working on...
This for sure. DP to Pt was two years, and that stayed in Sinnoh, giving us literally three years with the region. Since then, we haven't gotten more than a year with a region.
@@doomsdayrabbit4398 I mean, Sword and Shield came out in 2019, so we've had 3 years in Galar. Sun and Moon came out in 2016, so we had 3 years in Alola, and then X and Y came out in 2013, so 3 years with Kalos. And Black and White came out in 2010, so we had 3 years in Unova, too. The problem is that small 2D games take significantly less time to make than 3D ones, so the 3D ones aren't as polished.
Then that is an argument for the opinion that there should never be 3D mainstream Pokémon games. We certainly can’t say for them to stop now, but we can note that there is no unambiguously good Pokémon game since Pokémon black/white or B2W2, and this is in a franchise where many mistakes are shown in full detail. We can also note that the pace of stuff picked up since 2012 (X and Y) and that 3D games take more time to develop. All of these factors suggest Pokémon should have stayed 2d forever save spin-offs.
The reason your 100% accuracy moves were missing was due to overworld weather effects (eg fog) which reduce accuracy and with your turn order in the ursaring fight the opponent was never paralysed and only had one turn as the game stated they would. The game said “it may be unable to move” this was reminding the player that ursaring was paralysed however the ursaring never got “full paralysed” and never lost a turn and so when it attacked your pachirisu that was its first move.
Despite its issues I really did enjoy this title a lot especially as a nerd on Japanese mythology and Ainu culture As for Volo, I think a lot of his behavior can be explained by him being it's just a read as an indigenous person. From the old textbooks, he basically saw his entire culture get overrun by colonizers and appropriators to the point that the original cultures that dwelled in Sinnoh was completely forgotten. It must be absolutely maddening to know that a deity exist that allows such despair to befall the people of his land.
Yeah, given how he tied into the setting and worldbuilding I felt like he made more sense than a lot of Pokemon villains, despite on the surface having a similar aim. Being indigenous also ties in well with his being around more and knowing more about the land - it seemed like a funny gimmick at first that he was just everywhere but then they filled it out and it made sense still which was neat!

47:20 The pop up saying Ursaring was paralyzed wasn't actually saying that it was losing its move, it was actually triggering the effect of spark that paralyzed Ursaring again, effectively reapplying the condition. So actually, there was no error here, Ursaring's play rough just didn't get stopped by it's paralysis
As a data analyst and fellow OCD patient, I appreciate you correcting the math on shiny spawns, but you were still wrong. Everyone always says shiny ODDS when they mean shiny PROBABILITY. Odds are successes divided by failures. Probability is successes divided by total possibilities. For example if 3 out of 4 pokemon are shiny, then the odds are 3:1 (or just 3), whereas the probability is 3/4 (0.75 or 75%). Love the video btw!

The shadow popping in and out at 1:54:15 is not a render distance issue, it is a problem with frustum culling. Simply put, the game ceases to compute the tree when it goes off-screen to free up that memory and processing power, which is normal, but in this case the shadow disappears when the tree does. The game should know that the shadow is on screen, and therefore the tree, or at least the projected shadow, need to remain in place, but it was not programmed that way. Likely, the lighting system is designed to generate simple silhouettes from the active models. No model, nothing to process, no shadow. I'm not trying to defend the tender distance in this game, it is also terrible. The incompetence in modern Pokemon games is astounding.

Regarding Ingo, I sawba theory that stated that Ingo was brought back in time to help popularize/normalize Pokemon battles, which is what he claims he wants to do once he manages the training grounds in Jubilife. It makes sense to use someone like him since he's basically a Frontier Brain, who are considered on the level of Elite Four or even Champions in modern day Pokemon, and they are able to battle under many niche situations, which is fitting for the new battle style introduced in this game. So basically this theory makes Ingo to be the founding father of Pokemon battling, at least as a norm than more of an exception in Hisui. A darker and more boring theory is that Ingo was the original isekai but his trip back into the past was botched, resulting in his lost memories and stuff, so the player character was essentially his replacement. It also sorta ties well since Arceus wanted an experienced modern battler to face Volo, whose skills with controlling Pokemon would be considered too dangerous in the past but more manageable for someone like Ingo(and the player character ofc).

I literally only did one "Path of Solitude" quest after finding out that I'd need to box my party and add them back every single time. I don't know why, but that specific instance of poor design really bothered me.
I'll go on record as saying that I was one of the disillusioned fans whom this game brought back. I didn't buy Let's Go or BDSP, but I did buy Legends Arceus, and it gave me hope for the franchise again (even though, yes, the unfinished quality was very distracting). I have another friend who didn't buy any Switch Pokemon games except Legends Arceus, and he said he'll probably stick to the Legends series from now on.
Bdsp was a cash grab made in a year to make a quick buck out of its impressionable fan base. Sword and shield was bad. And let’s go is severely underrated but not that good either. The only good game was legends arceus and “possibly whatever scarlet and violet ends up being although I keep my expectations low.
“Hope for the franchise again” What is this delusion with Pokemon fans to say this shit for each single games. If some unfinished tech demo gives you hope then you're just naive. You get shit on a gold platter and say this gives you hope because it wasn't on a silver platter. The concept is great but the execution was shoddy and rushed. And your contribution just gives them more incentive to make more rushed games.
@@Wyllowisp the fact that legends arceus was an unfinished game is exactly why I don’t have much faith for generation 9 or whatever comes next. I kind of already lost faith in there ability to make proper remakes, the last good remake was omega ruby and alpha sapphire. I think gamefreak is a lot better at remaking older games then they are at making a new generation of game with new concepts. Whatever remake we have next in line I don’t have much faith after bdsp. Let’s go was sort of made with the intention of bringing Pokémon go players into the mainline series so I can give let’s go the benefit of the doubt of why the remake was mediocre but there was no excuse for bdsp being as bad as it was, the fact that they sacrificed the quality of bdsp to create an unfinished tech demo like legends arceus is really what made me dislike this company even more. They are taking very small baby steps every new generation. Pokémon games will never be good unless we give them an incentive to be good and the only way to achieve this is by voting with our dollars and not buying any of the latest garbage they give us. I'm sorry if your ego gets bruised when you see an unpolished texture, I'm sure it's so difficult needing a game to be absolutely 4k perfect so your poor sensitive eyes can handle it, but some of us are capable of seeing positives in something because of the GAMEPLAY instead acting like video games are graphics and nothing else.

BILLIONS! And their quality is akin to a start up indie company. How is that acceptable to anyone with any concept of money?
As for why Volo wanted to destroy the universe, I’m wondering if that wasn’t his initial intention. Maybe he just really wanted to meet Arceus, to the point he’d summon Giratina to do it, and Giratina’s influence twisted him over time. Given that Volo is the one who opened the Space Time rift, and it was apparently open long before the player showed up, there would definitely be enough time for it to be believable that he’d go crazy. As for why he so desperately wanted to meet Arceus, I don’t know, but maybe we’ll get more info in Scarlet and Violet, especially if the “Volo time traveled” theories are correct
Also he was wanting to create his own universe, which could have been similar in many ways to the current universe - but he still had to destroy the current one to create the new one.
@@michapiasta3072 at least some of them care or we wouldn't have gotten a game like this. It's sad that it's only a small minority of people who work there that probably want to make a crazy concept game but keep getting shut down R&D at GF and PMC must be a nightmare where creativity goes to die. Which is ironic coming from a kids franchise about colorful fighting monsters
2:45:20 this is called "reflection mapping". It is a much cheaper way to get the appearance of reflective surfaces but of course it does not hold up to close scrutiny. The game already runs only moderately well, so I assume it cannot handle real time reflections of any sort. The question is probably whether a matte finish would have been better, or the fake reflection.
Interestingly they apparently use a technique to copy assets (like sprites) to create reflections - maybe they could've done that but I assume there are more known techniques that can be applied here.
2:36:55 Im sure someone has already mentioned this, but they do indeed explicitely state that they exclusively keep their pokemon out of their pokeballs. When they were both introduced it was stated that pokeballs is this new thing the professor came up with and the clans initially believe that carrying pokemon in pokeballs is cruel
People saying obviously don't even know what a ps2 game looks like or are blinded by nostalgia with how underpowered it was excluding cgi cutscenes. I'd forgive it more if they compared it to the original Xbox or even the wii. If anything I'd say it looks more like an early ps3 game than ps2.
@@ZakanaHachihaCBC most of his criticisms are small & somewhat insignificant complaints but it's really death by a thousand needles here, with the entire experiences being chalk full of fuckery left and right, some big some small
A move's accuracy rating is (and always has been, since the beginning of the series) only 1/4 of the formula for whether a move hits or not. It also depends on the user's accuracy stat, the target's evasiveness stat, and modifiers (such as weather conditions). A move's accuracy stat being 100 doesn't mean it will never miss, that's why moves that actually can't miss like Swift are always explicitly labelled as such
You can check how many spiritomb wisps are in each area by talking to the girl who gave you the quest. Also, they're render distance is based on the time of day. You can see them from further away at night.
Legends Arceus was designed to be a single player experience, which is why there are no trade-required evolutions within it. I do kinda wish there could be some online pvp battles at the battle dojo, that would’ve been cool.
idk if anyone else in the comments has already pointed it out and if they have sorry for reiterating but the clefable eye inset things are definitely deliberate, if you look at the 2d art it has little lines around its eyes that those insets are obviously meant to be mimicking, the shitty shader they use on the models just makes it look like a mistake lmao
1:10:29 You can favorite and rearrange items based on your liking, you don't need to cycle through all of it. If you open your bag, there are instructions below on how to do those things
(Oh and by the way, I say during this video that there's still no word on when HOME support is coming to BDSP or Legends, when it actually had been announced that it's coming soon. So why wasn't it in the video? Because it's a nearly 4 hour video that I spent months working on and this HOME announcement was made YESTERDAY, the day I uploaded this video and scheduled it for publishing.)
My issues with the wisps is that I tried marking them off on my map manually, which you shouldn't have to do, but THEN they limit how many markers you can have on the map, so then I just had to give up because I ran out of markers!! It was ridiculous.
Fog. Fog. Fog. You are missing because it's blatantly foggy in the background, you could have pointed out that making fog be a common weather effect was a questionable design choice, or why the UI doesn't account for fog, but it's foggy, that's why you were missing with hydro pump so much and missing with 100% accurate moves as well. You can check which weather is in effect by clicking the plus button
@@robertharris6092 as I explained the ui doesn't show fog unless you go looking for it by clicking the plus button while in battle, that is the actual bad design. Also fog is never explained to be a thing anywhere in the game at all, which is also probably a flaw. Maybe having fog lower accuracy itself is a flaw too lol idk
Someone has probably mentioned this, but there's a girl in Jubilife that tells you how many wisps you've collected and which areas are complete. She also gives you rewards for progress.
Honestly, I faded away from main series pokemon after Emerald. The games are okay but they have two main problems for me. They are too formulaic. But also, from a technical perspective, they have not really kept up with technology. They were technically impressive in terms of content and gameplay hours on the GB/GBC. They were pretty average for all the competition with JRPGs and SRPGs and good sprite work on the GBA. As time has gone on, the gap between where the hardware is and what they produce as games is just more and more disappointing. Like to a person picking up a modern pokemon having not played one, the weird digital screeching of early gen pokemon is just weird. That was a creative solution to an old limitation that doesn't need to be anymore. Just record modern monster noises for them. I'd want that even before voice acting for the people. Visually Sw/Sh and arceus are bad looking by switch standards. The games don't feel like the flagship product of the biggest franchise on earth. They feel budget. The attack animations in sw/sh are so lazy. This isn't being packed into the limited storage of a GB cart anymore. You can do better. Arceus animations are better actually, but probably only because they have removed so many moves and pokemon that they can focus on the few that exist more. But arceus environments are so ugly. They look like they were player made with a basic in-game map maker tool. Its so blandly mass textured with items so bluntly dropped in little corners and unnatural plateaus in a very robotic way. Games on switch like Botw look better technically, and creatively while also having the handicap of being actual large contiguous landmasses. This game loads in delineated areas and still can't even reach a baseline of years old games technically or artistically. Mechanically, I like the concept of the real time overworld and starting turn based instances of combat. I like the attempt to change things up with the "style" combat. But the changes to speed and multiple turns seem a bit wonky. Having no multiplayer battles almost seems like a blessing with how unbalanced it has the potential to be. Otherwise in terms of gameplay, I found the game refreshing. I liked it was like a more open ended progression. You just "research" which involves interacting with pokemon in a couple of ways. I like the de-emphasized trainer battles. I don't need another game where I walk down every road and every one tries to fight me, fight 8 gym leaders in 8 cities, fight the elite 4. The game is more about catching them all than it has ever been. I loved red/blue, but the real tagline for the franchise in terms of the content of the game is "fight them all for your profit". This game is closer to what professor oak talked about. Understanding pokemon more rather than optionally just catching one to check it off a list and then giving up when you can't get all 3 of the eevees because no one wants to permanently trade them. The story was fine. I don't think Its ever been a strong point of pokemon. I don't think it was particularly bad by series standards. Music was great, I think its the best single aspect of the game. Some real catchy tracks. Overall, I enjoyed it, because novelty goes a long way for me in this franchise. I like pokemon, I just didn't want to keep playing the same basic structure with a few gimmicks added and the names changed. But the technical issues I have with the series still remain. I think I responded to how it was more designed as a single player game. Its not a dual release, they added in some pretty smart items like the link cable evo item. Its a limited dex, it all added up to make for me, a better paced game to catch everything in. I think that lack of multiplayer or connectivity is way less core to my enjoyment or "magic" of pokemon for me than it is for you and it more easily allowed me to just enjoy this game.
Name a pokemon game where music ISN'T one of the best aspects of the game lmao, its literally the only thing that has been consistently good in pokemon games
@@pn2294 Yeah but there are degrees to which you can be formulaic and pokemon is on the high end of that in my opinion. Some formulaic series occasionally surprise you with a full quality mainline game that fundamentally changes things. Like breath of the wild. While pokemon immediately is going right back to the two game, turnbased, fight all the gyms structure it's had since red and blue.
The Diamond and Pearl clans weren’t fighting because they believed in different gods; they believed in the SAME god (Almighty Sinnoh). They fought because they believed their specific *version* of that god and the values it represented was the *correct* version; and they were both *wrong.*
Thank you so much for talking about the non-existant ending after completing Arceus's request, it is extremely concerning to me that seemingly no one cares that the story simply forgets to acknowledge/resolve the very most vital plot point, that makes the story exist in the first place (being isekai'd into the past).
47:14 I agree the turn counter is stupid, but that time you just got pranked. Ursaring got “reparalyzed”, so you got the paralysis chance on Spark and mistook it as Ursaring losing its turn(notice the text that displays). Should the game notify you that a Pokémon gets a status it already has? Probably not, but since about every OTHER status has a turn counter that resets if it gets, say, “reburned” or “refrostbitten”, I guess I can forgive that small oversight
In PLA all statuses have turn counters. Ursaring getting hit with the paralysis from Spark means the paralysis is extended. Strong style moves also make their statuses last longer. This works with drowsiness as well.
48:33 my Garchomp has missed dragon claw, a 100% accurate move, with no accuracy changing effects active. 1:06:22 my biggest nitpick (a phrase which makes no sense) is ursaluna being in the scroll menu 1:01:06 My wisps were bugged and I couldn’t even get spiritomb. I spent three hours getting the rest of the wisps, and I ended with the mirelands. However, at the end I was missing one. I had 106, but I needed 107 to talk to Vanessa and get the last one. I talked to her, and she said that I was missing one in the mirelands. 2 and a half hours and 6 online guides later, I gave up because no matter how many times I checked every spot, nothing was going to change. I ended up having to look up someone’s stream on UA-cam of giving away shinies (because the game doesn’t have random link trading) and I only managed to get a spiritomb by trading my shiny infernape. I am still salty about this. (Not sure of the timestamp): I spent 45 minutes chucking stuff at enamorous using various tactics until I finally got into a battle. 1:10:37 I actually figured out that the order stuff is in your inventory is the order it appears in your hotbar. I put my smoke bombs next to my wing balls and jet balls and my sticky globs next to my heavy balls and gigaton balls, so the system actually feels really smooth. However, I wish there was any indication that the inventory and hotbar orders are the same, because I figured it out after getting the shiny charm. 1:22:29 there’s actually a “bonk range” where if you throw a poké ball from too far, it bonks and does nothing. I actually like this because there’s a risk/reward factor to trying to catch an aggressive Pokémon without battling it. The range for a feather ball and the upgrades for it is actually slightly larger than the range aggressive Pokémon will become angry, so if you’re willing to waste some poké balls you can get the distance just right and keep chucking balls until it works. 1:25:20 fun fact: all the trees in this game are actually 4 times as large as they appear, the main character just isn’t big brain enough to see 1:54:03 That’s actually intended, it’s a backstep that Pokémon sometimes do idly. They often do it when you lock on or are facing that specific Pokémon, making it a little harder to catch them. 2:15:13 the late night theme reminds me of a couple subnautica themes, and it always reminds me of the calm parts of subnautica. 2:15:16 you should have lol 2:45:50 I think that the amount of options was similar to sword and shield, the only major differences being that there aren’t gloves or packs to customize. In the cons section, I think that players not knowing how they and Ingo got to Hisui is on purpose, as a mystery to leave to the fans. It could’ve had more hints while not having an answer though.
I think I know why it missed. They LITERALLY never say it anywhere else, but I think fog can appear in the world and obstruct moves. I never heard anything about it from an NPC, but there are some weather effects that actually do something, and fog just so happens to harness the power of being bad. Pretty sure I had a battle where I missed a 100% accurate move 4 times in a row because of bad luck. Edit: now that I actually see the part where he talks about accuracy, it does seem he is in fog which makes more sense for the missing. Why gamefreak never just put a “current accuracy” calculation there is beyond me…
I love your analysis of the story. The game had a cool concept and (for the most part) interesting characters. But the writing and execution left much to be desired in my opinion. The conflict between the two clans and the lack of cooperation between humans and pokemon both felt meaningless because they weren’t explored well. And Volo was cool but they didn’t do a good job explaining his motives. Admittedly it’s been a while since I played through the story so maybe I’m just forgetting/misremembering things. But to me, it really felt like Gamefreak forgot these characters and worlds are supposed to exist outside just the short window the story takes place in I enjoyed legends… a lot less than it seems most people did. Shaking up the ways to catch Pokémon was a great idea, but the mechanics still got pretty old pretty quick for me. The world designs were nice at first but after playing the game for a while they felt empty and sad. Overall, I didn’t hate Legends but it was far from my favorite game in the series
On the topic of EVs, IVs, and the new System. From the perspective of a casual player, I completely understand why the new system is better, and I understand that the old system is annoying, tedious, and bad. But from my perspective, which is that of a competitive player, the IV/EV system is absolutely needed. It allows player creativity to shine, and so that not every Mon has the same stats as the same Mon. If every stat could be maxed, there would be no decision making, no risk, every Pokémon would be fast, strong, and bulky. No reason to make any decisions. The current IV/EV system definitely could use some help, but it’s core is absolutely necessary for competitives growth and playability.
Here’s a way I thought the Miss Fortune sisters could’ve been used better, or at least conveyed their desire to help more. After the player is banished but before they meet Volo, they run into the trio. Coin and Clover are quick to pick a fight, but Charm notices the forlorn expression on your face. She (probably passive aggressively) asks what’s wrong and you tell them that you were banished. Charm, who was once a member of the Galaxy Team, empathizes with your feelings and offers to help or shelter you (though still in a stand off manner). You then have a cutscene with the four of you around a campfire and they each hint at or briefly explain why they left their respective settlements; mainly that they didn’t agree with them in many ways, to the point that they no longer wanted to even associate with their groups, and ultimately found a family in each other (I don’t know if they’re actually related. Given their appearances and that they’re from different clans I don’t think they’re blood related). You all spend the night together and say your goodbyes in the morning, needing to find a way to solve the whole red sky problem. Charm gives you the advice to find your own family like she did, and that doesn’t have to be the one you’ve stuck with this whole time. You leave and then we have the scene with the Shinx and Volo. Also, later I think they should be the ones to find the ore for you; they roam all over the region, it isn’t a stretch that they’d recognize what you’re looking for. They claim they’re only doing it for themselves, but maybe it can be hinted that they’re also doing it for you, since they formed a small kinship with you. AND, the advice Charm gives could be even more impactful if, like in PMD Gates to Infinity, the player staying in Hisui was their decision. They decide that, even if they have “real family” back in modern day, they’ve found a new family here in Hisui. Or maybe the hurt their new family caused them was something they couldn’t forgive and now want to start over again and find new/old family in the life they once knew. There was SO MUCH more potential that these three had and could’ve done to influence the story and the player, it really is a shame they didn’t do much in the grand scheme of things
I'm annoyed by how weak Charm, Clover and Coin are. Coin and Clover only use 1 Pokemon each, and Toxicroak and Abomasnow both have a 4× weakness, and Charm never evolves her Rhydon no matter how many times you battle her. They kind of remind me of Courtney. She's easily my favourite Pokemon character thanks to Omega Ruby and Pokemon Generations but only has a single Camerupt to throw at you. Even in its Mega form, any Water type worth its salt can obliterate it. She's a brilliant character in concept but so easy to beat that it lessens the impact she could have had, which might be why so few people bother to discuss Courtney. They should have actually built up these characters' teams throughout the course of the games instead of just having them use 1, or in Charm's case 2, Pokemon in every battle.
Funnily enough, I found Eevee to be the most common for me (around 20-30 I believe I caught before getting any of my eevolutions) and some of my friends that played pokemon, however, getting cranidos and bastiodon was a pain I can agree. Also in case you missed someone else's comment about the wisps, you can check how many you've gotten, it's just this obscure girl npc that looks like any other in the hub area one other thing with wisps, for whatever reason, the rendering for wisps is so much easier at night as it is explained by this random npc girl I believe and at 1:02:10 you show it is daytime so it makes sense why the render isn't that good as it's supposed to be seen at night compared to 1:01:31 where it is night time, however I do agree that there should have been indicators of where wisps you already collected were.
I feel like I'm one of the few people who found TLA really pretty. Very beautiful and immersive in a low-poly way, like a well-designed game from the 2000s with some upgrades. I don't think the team could have got it running so well if they'd beefed up the graphics more, and I like how they worked within their limitations. There was great attention to detail with the design overall.
It is really pretty like half the time. Usually when the more muddy textures of the ground isn't visible. The BOTW slightly cel shaded style can be so gorgeous in the right circumstances especially on the small screen
Yeah, they did work well with their limitations to give it a nice style. I like it, but because it does end up getting compared to BoTW so much I can easily see how people find it underwhelming even considering the limitations because it doesn't quite give a visual impression as good/distinctive as BoTW.
It's not my favorite looking game. But I feel like anyone who really feels this is a bad looking switch game hasn't played anything on Switch other than BOTW. Oh well, I guess in another 3 years when Nintendo drops the next console most of this will be addressed.
On the part where you were talking about accuracy, the reason you kept missing was because it was foggy outside, I don't know how much fog lowers your accuracy but I know it brings it down a noticeable amount.
I like the pixely 3d of the 3ds games. I wish they would’ve expanded on that rather than going full 3d. I simply just don’t think they have the skills to do this style.
@@flick2flick Oh i wish theyx would put white and black in the switch store. Could never play them and now their are so expensive getting them second hand here where i live xx.
Finally, someone else mentions the button mapping! I thought I was insane, I couldn't find others taking about it. The controls nearly drove me insane, enough where anytime I go back to the game, it takes a while just to relearn everything, haha! Great video!!
Definitely sounds like the timing worked out super well, and hey appreciate it The background music used is from a lot of my personal favorite remixers out there who make some really shnice stuff, who I'd very much recommend checking out if that kinda thing interests you
So fucking sick that you can transfer characters into completely different styles of games. If only many Pokemon you could send weren't already in the game naturally, it would feel more special.
Real talk, I hope EVs and IVs stay gone forever too because they just make creating a competitively viable team so needlessly time consuming. I tried EV training for the Battle Frontier in Platinum and it took me a full week of constant playing just to get the team I wanted. This was on an emulator with fast forward mind you.
I mean, in the newer game you can legit breed and ev a team up in like... maybe 2 hours? You can literally just buy all the things to just max out your eva exactly how you want them
@@rugerfunk4267 but legends Arceus is probably faster and I think that’s what people want lol I don’t play competitive but I think Legends Arceus had such a cool and quick system for training, I bet lots of people would delve into competitive Pokémon if it was as simple as Legends Arceus
@@joeyjose727 it is faster, but because there are not more EV's or IV's it also limits your options greatly. There is absolutely no reason not to max out your pokemon with effort points into every stat because there is no limit to how much you can use, as opposed to how you can only give 512 EV's with a max of 252 EV's per stat in mainline pokemon games. It forces you to diversify and strategize, and that is what really gives pokemon a competitive edge. The competitive scene in Gen 8 Sw/Sh has been one of the most active and diverse of any gen, and it is partly because obtaining competitive viable pokemon is easier than ever. You can change natures with Nature mints, manipulate IV's with bottle caps, max out EV's instantly with vitamins and raise to level 100 with incredible ease thanks to exp. candies. Gen 8 has made it possible to make every pokemon you want instantly viable in a matter of minutes if you have the resources, which are all incredibly common and can be gathered in just a few hours of playtime. Competitive Pokemon needs variety, and Legend Arceus can get away with limiting options because there is no PvP. If there was, a lot of builds would be either unviable competitively or busted and actively making the metagame stagnant. It is not a surprise that Legends Arceus doesn't give the option to battle online, knowing how the combat system could only work well against AI enemies.
@@lognacho well they can keep that mainline system if they want, just make it even faster I don’t even play competitive (or new Pokémon for that matter… I might buy Violet), I’m just parroting what I’ve heard people say, that it doesn’t need to take as long as it does (and my understanding is that it’s currently not nearly as frustrating or time consuming as it once was), but for convenience they should just give everyone the dev tools to create Pokémon as lab test tube babies, EV and IVs perfected, ready for a tournament
@@lognacho "Competitive Pokemon needs variety". I agree. Let's remove EV's and IV's as they're pointless and worthless since most fights can be won by using a Super Effective move (the largest amount of dealt damage in these games, and can cause monst of even 20 levels under what they're fighting to get OHKO's on them). I mean, stats are "utterly worthless" in Pokemon games in the face of "Super Effective" moves, most of the time. Provided we're not using "Legendaries" or have stats so jacked up because the mon being used is considered "broken" by the community. We should also increase the movepool from 4 to 6. 4 only existed because of space limitations on the cartridges back in the early days. There's no reason to leave it at 4. Increasing this move pool will drastically REDUCE how niche every member of your team has to be. Want to have two or three strategies for a team to engage in to win, depending on what you're fighting? You can't have that. You're limited to 4 attacks on every mon and any loss of a single mon adversely affects the strategy being employed because of how limiting this pool is. I'd also suggest "stat normalization". This way it's all about the STRATEGY used rather than "the way you raised your Pokemon". It would also reduce "gimmick" games. While gimmick games are pretty funny when they work, and are interesting... they're not that viable. The lack of "strategy" involved in Pokemon, currently, is also what leads to the current "meta" of the games. Which, is usually, "get the biggest stat sticks possible with the most destructive hits you can". I mean... Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 and 2 back on original Gameboy and Gameboy Color have far more depth in terms of combat and PvP than Pokemon has ever had. Which... is sad. Competitive Pokemon needs to do a few things. 1. Reduce "barrier to entry" for newcomers. That is to say, a team the player beats the Elite Four with on a casual run should be viable for PvP. Most players just want to use the team they've come to rely on and love over the course of the game and have a fun fight against similar minded players. Competitive Pokemon does NOT allow for this in any way, and the community is so Toxic about it, that most never come into the scene. 2. Reduce RNG. This is half the issue of things like "The Battle Tower" and Competitive Fights. If you can lose because RNG doesn't roll in your favor, it's not a "competitive" system. 3. Buffs/Debuffs need to be more useful. We'd be served a lot better if there was not a system of "stack up to 5" for buffs/debuffs. Change the buffs into straight affairs. There's a "standard" one, and a "boosted" one for each. Let's say the standard is an increase of 25%, and the boosted is an increase of 50%. Done deal. We can do the same for accuracy and evasion. Having to spend several turns "buffing" and "debuffing" in competitive play is not really viable. Most fights between two mons end in two or so moves. Most often than not... in a single move. 4. Fights need to last a bit longer. Pokemon of similar level being able to "one shot" each other isn't really good competitively. It would be far more interesting if this happened less often. That way, being able to do so, would be remarkable. Super Effective damage should probably be "toned down" some. Or, maybe the damage formulas need to be reworked. Something needs to happen here. Fights that last longer mean more strategies can be at play, and there are more possibilities for "pendulum swings". That is to say, an opponent that was losing can come back and win. 5. Removal of any "move" that just isn't that "viable". It's fine that we've got some of these "low level" moves for the main game, but they should have "upgraded" versions of them for "competitive play". You already somewhat see this with "Absorb". You get "Aborb", "Mega Drain", "Giga Drain". More moves need to follow some sort of "upgrade line". If they aren't competitive, there should be a line to "make them competitive", or they should be removed from the game. The move list is seriously over bloated with the amount of attacks in it that just "do the same thing, but with a different amount of power". Some of these should be "direct upgrade paths". For example: If a Pokemon can learn "Absorb", then it should be able to naturally learn "Giga Drain" later. 6. Increase the Movepool from 4 to 6. This immediately invites more strategy to combat and can make many more mons viable than currently are. It invites the usage of several strategies as well, rather than forcing a player to adhere to one or two. They would be able to "innovate on the fly" much better. 7. PP shouldn't exist in competitive play. If you have to restrict usage of a "high level skill" by the amount of times you can use it... you've got a bad system on your hands. Probably means you need to rework how many of each skill you've got kicking around. Every player should naturally want "the strongest moves they can use" on their team. If the move isn't "the strongest they can use", then it needs to serve some other function in combat. There isn't a point to restricting usage of those skills unless you're going to introduce more skills that reduce that usage (like Spite, which was a fantastic move, but it's the only one of its kind). If "bleeding your opponent dry" of moves is meant to be a viable strategy, then they need to create more moves to do that. If it's not, then let's remove the PP limit on attacks during PvP. 8. We need a "ranking system" in here somewhere. A way to pit new players against new players and experts against experts. A way to "climb the ladder" if you like, or a way to "stay casual" if you like. Most players first experience in PvP is getting curb stomped by a basement dweller and then never touching the PvP again. The main game or the "Battle Tower" stuff never prepares any player for this, nor gets them "ready" for it. There needs to be a "progression system" in place. One in which newbies can "learn the ropes" and "gradually get better". --- That's my short list of things Competitive needs to do. As of right now... it's not very "competitive" at all. It's one of the least balanced systems I've ever seen for "competitive play". It's horrendous.
You can absolutely run during boss battles, just not when you’re locked on with ZL. That’s how the game always works. And running is usually way better for avoiding attacks since you can throw a balm without having to wait for the roll animation to finish.
For the point in the research tasks, I don't think game freak wanted you to do every single research task, but rather they wanted to give you plenty of options to reach research level 10 for each Pokémon
Haven’t finished the entire review (about half way so far) and great retrospective as always. You are fair, give relevant examples, and give advice on how to fix many of the issues. It sucks that your sub count is so low considering your takes are better than 99% of other UA-camrs who only know how to POG or OMG.
It always really bugs me when people use the "it's a kid's book/game/movie/show" cop-out about something for kids having a bad story. Kid's media _can_ have good, even great, stories. The Secret of NIHM, the Harry Potter series, Undertale (on the border of kid/teen), almost everything Studio Ghibli does, almost everything Pixar does, Avatar: The Last Airbender (the TV show; Shamalammadingdong's movie is hot garbage) Zelda: Majora's Mask, ... There's a massive list and giving a kids' game's story a pass is just excusing mediocrity or it's makers just not caring enough.

48:35 About missing a lot of the time: pretty sure you are battling in Mist, which decreases accuracy. The bad part of it is that, I believe, it's not stated ANYWHERE that the environment can change stuff like that, but otherwise I thought it was a neat detail. Like, if you are in the middle of a field covered in mist, it makes sense that you wouldn't be able to see and as such no one should really tell you beforehand. ... THEN I remember that this is also a Pokemon game and it wouldn't hurt to be told this anyway because its a videogame, but oh well... 51:40 As a completionist, I actually like all the research tasks. Sure they can seem a little tedious, but the amount of satisfaction you get once you finish all of them is... Well, feels pretty awesome. Perhaps its something that only completionists get to feel but sometimes the satisfaction comes from all the sense of achievement you get by grinding all of that, so eh~. There are also completionists who just go "I like number to go high" and... Yeah, that's all. So hey, perhaps it isn't as bad for us as it would be for you who are not interested in that, which just points out that, in my opinion, it caters to more interests beyond the casual or the completionist player out there. It also helps too when you realize that "caught" can be used synonymously as "evolved" in some cases. For example, I never struggled with Golbat because I just made sure to evolve all my Zubats at Night and voilá. Got both the generic caught and the caught at night. True, the game doesn't tell you this, but it's honestly not a big deal (at least for me). I don't know, in general I disagree with your point about us completionists because it doesn't feel as a punishment, at least for me, and in fact feels more interesting and rewarding (to myself, at least) to see all that time, and all of that just to have a sparkly pokeball. Is it a lot of time? Yes. Are you obligated to do it? No. Will I still do it because it is something I enjoy and helps me de-stress because I know I can do mindless chores with a sense of accomplishment once I finish them? Hell Yeah. So, again, maybe it's something that only completionists understand and that you as a more casual person don't see? Could be! Could be not. 1:00:00 RE:Cranidos. OOOOOR you could've just stun and backstrike them continuously? ._. Honestly, you just made the game harder for yourself on this one, dude. Sorry. THO' I do get where you are coming from, what with you using non-STAB moves and all that... But still, if there are multiple ways to catch a Pokemon... Why didn't you try to do the stun/catch thing? Another thing is that, if you pay attention to how the distortions work, you would've realized that there are only 3 unique Distortion-mons in each one. So you get in, spawn those 3 (who btw are ALWAYS in the same spots), and if they are not what you want, go outside, rest (change the time at camp) and go and do the other tasks you most likely need to do in that area. Just want to say, I'm not saying this as if "Oh god this was SO obvious, you noob!" or anything, but rather a peek into what my brain as a completionist does and notices in order to not feel as if the game is dragging on. However, this time around it might be ME the one who doesn't understand your more casual playstyle tho', because I never found it tedious at all to wait for a distortion because I always had stuff to do. However, for you who have a goal to achieve, I can see why it WOULD be tedious. The Spiritomb thing has been explained by others in here, but in short: there IS a way to check the amount of wisps. They are meant to be searched at NIGHT and you were told that by the same person who gave you the quest. 1:03:05 There IS a way to change the weather without resetting the area. Just rest and change literally to any other time. You got in at night? Go to sleep and change it to morning. Not the weather you need? Change it to midday. So forth and so on. 1:12:00 OR you could've choose favorite on a berry and a pokeball and reorganize your items and they will be beside each other. Unfortunately, again, the game doesn't tell you this tho'.
A lot of those things the game doesn't tell you are things the game shouldn't _need_ to tell you. Weather affects battles? That's been a thing for literally twenty years, it was introduced in 2002 when Ruby and Sapphire came out and hasn't gone away since. If you've played a Pokemon game before you've more than likely needed to learn this. Evolving counts as catching? The first time you evolve a Pokemon and check the Pokedex for the evolved form you can see that the "number caught" counter goes up by one, doesn't take a genius to realize what that means. Hell, just being able to use your brain and think to yourself "What is the most efficient way to do this? Can I get multiple goals done at once?" Is common sense, literal children can do that thought process. And that's not even mentioning the fact that once you acquire a single example of the Pokemon in question and then get the research level up to 10 you can be totally done with that Pokemon and never interact with them again. You don't need to do every single task for every single Pokemon for the game to count 100% completion. This guy's criticisms really hinge on three things, those being that he's not very good at the game (if you have eighty hours in the game and you're still fucking up basic controller inputs that's on you), he doesn't pay attention to things that are told to him (doesn't talk to NPCs and skips through dialogue that tells him things he then bitches about not knowing), and he doesn't seem to understand Pokemon (he doesn't use STAB and sends in quad weak Pokemon against alphas).
I didn’t encounter nearly as many bugs/problems as you and I overall REALLY enjoyed the game, but as you pointed out, the graphics are a bit all over the place in terms of quality, and the ui/menus are a mess. One thing that really frustrated me was the fact that not only are you not able to check your pokedex during battles, you can’t do it either from the team menu or the boxes. It made completing the dex tasks really annoying and needlessly tedious (I only went for the basic 10-tasks-completed pages, so I had to switch pokemon a lot more than if I grinded 100% every time) and not having a shortcut from your team menu to directly check the page of the pokemons currently on your team was an annoyance. Also, catching pokemons on the water was SUCH a pain istg.
Some pokemon do react with water depending on the depth (bidoof swims and it is adorable), but it is super weird seeing pokemon not just walk through water like its no issue, but for the water to not really even react to the pokemon
@@DiscoChomperOfficial And the originl comment said nothing about the yearly releases being main series games. Secondly, yes I do count remakes as main series. They are not spin offs, or mini games. I would even count PLA as a main series game.
So I noticed in the catching section of the gameplay chapter you left out the ability to stun Pokémon with mud, flash bombs and other items which helps out a lot in catching aggressive Pokémon or Pokémon that have already noticed you. I’m only about an hour and 30 minutes in so maybe you bring it up later but I wanted to point that out since it seems like you overlooked such an important part of catching mons
I'm glad somebody else pointed out the lack of voice acting. It's something the Pokemon Community as a whole hasn't really cared about, because the games have never had voice acting. But the games also weren't full price $60 releases until the Switch either. If they're going to charge the same price as games like Elden Ring and FF7 Remake, I feel like they need that same level of polish and AAA features. Also, I think the way Nintendo treats their fan creators is an excellent point. Companies like Sega and Square Enix actually hire people that make really popular fan games/mods/romhacks into their development staff, while Nintendo just takes the romhack down and sues the creators. It's not hard to see why the franchise is stagnating when they don't bring in new, passionate individuals that are clearly talented.
2:38:20 That's actually intentional, both Clefairy and Clefable have those lines around the eyes, you can see them in their official art and other games too.
As someone who hasn't bought a mainline game since BASE Sun & Moon in 2016... Legends Arceus did bring me back. Oh hell, it's not perfect but for me, it just felt nice to play a Pokemon game again after being away for so long. Don't expect Scarlett and Violet to really change much though. Hell.. I'm pretty sure we're back to the traditional stuff including battling Pokemon in order to catch them and that's it. XD The video games are merely an anchor for everything else. If it's... _GOOD ENOUGH_ , that's all they care about. Think about it like this: I didn't buy Sword and Shield but I LOVE Twilight Wings. It breathed so much life into the world and it's core characters (including the main character: _Corviknight Taxi Driver_ lol) Like, I LOVE how characters like Bea, Nessa, and ESPECIALLY Oleana were portrayed. Their personalities, their lives, etc. (Like watch their respective episodes) And... I could appreciate all of that character growth and lovely animations and visuals... _without playing Pokemon Sword & Shield_ because I could feel the care, the passion, etc. Going into them and they don't feel like super rushed products that HAVE to leave the door soon or else. While I might not agree with EVERY criticism in this video, I appreciate that there IS some criticism that isn't just about the damn graphics lol. I feel like the biggest problem with this franchise... _It's TOO big for its own good_ and everyone loves Pokemon for different things and different reasons so it's almost impossible to create something that will please the majority of fans... I know it doesn't mean they shouldn't try but you get the idea.
I think that ingo was brought on accident by volo/giratina messing with space/time (which is why they had words for space time rift before), while arceus brought you to hisui intentionally, which is probably much safer.
Thanks for this, I had a lot of fun with PLA and praise Game Freak for trying something different, but was so disappointed at how quickly they announced SV after PLA's release. I was really hoping they'd release DLC for PLA and make it a more meaningful and complete experience, but now that you meticulously pointed out all of the game's flaws, I do think (and hope) that GF is pouring all their resources into SV so that it's the game where they finally find their stride with 3D rather than keeping their teams split up and working on too many projects at once. SV look promising because of two things (the graphics and the open world aspect) and so I hope they do live up to the promise. It also reminds me of how much better B2W2, HGSS and ORAS are, something I wouldn't have said when PLA just came out -- HGSS and B2W2 were made on a system that Game Freak was already proficient with, and ORAS simply felt like more fully realized versions of X and Y. I'd love to know more of the behind the scenes process of how Pokémon games are made, since a lot of newer developers work on them and I can forgive a lot of the series' flaws if Game Freak is genuinely trying to give new devs a chance without overworking them (even despite having to stick to a hasty release schedule to sell more merch). I'm a huge Xenoblade fan, and while I do recognize that Game Freak probably had much more trouble making PLA than Monolith did making XC2, it still stands that there's no comparison when revisiting XC2 and Torna. For all their own flaws, they're much better and more polished games with much more personality, and make PLA feel anemic by comparison.
Your complaint about the satchel dude actually happened to me in Breath of the Wild, I never found the tree dude until I had killed like half the divine beasts because I just never went near that area and when I finally did I doubled all my inventories.
In this game if you turn off the music, like I usually do for all games, in all cut scenes with the flute playing (even getting new ride pokemon) there is no flute playing, but running around the flute noise is played when summoning a ride pokemon. This means the flute is stored as a sound effect and music file, this makes cut scenes a lot more quite with no flute noise. Most NPCs in Jubilife Village have a neat aspect to them as to not trap players. If you run into them long enough (1-10 seconds) you'll pass right through them and they become ethereal until they are reloaded. The biggest bug I experienced durring this game was in Turnback Cave. Every time I would enter it the cave would be so extremely dark I couldn't even find the torches, until I undocked my switch and the cave lighting would just start working fine in handheld mode. It was so broken in docked mode and unplayable I had to walk across the room pick up the switch and play in handheld mode inorder to catch the alpha golbat and unknown in there. (More tedious than anything, but still dumb)
Regarding Bagin, honestly you should probably just take the "L" instead of trying to blame bad game design. Yes, it's the responsibility of game designers to effectively communicate their mechanics and minimize player mistakes like this as much as possible, but it's absolutely impossible to account for every possible mistake a player can make. Even Super Mario Bros world 1-1 confuses some people. In this case they were VERY clear that you should talk to the guy, to the point of stopping what you're doing, and complaining that a pretty clear statement like "do you keep running out of space in your bag," to designate a solution to the problem of running out of space in your bag, isn't clear enough sounds to me like ex post facto rationalization to preserve your dignity. I can understand your criticism that there are too many tutorials in the beginning, but overall I don't think that's as much of an issue as it has been in every Pokemon game since X and Y, since these are legitimately new systems that they're trying to introduce, and they actually need tutorials. If anything, it seems like you're asking for MORE tutorials; you want a Bagin tutorial, after all. To me, it seems like in an RPG, a genre in which exploring and talking to everybody you meet has been firmly established as an important mechanic since the days of Dragon Quest 1 and Ultima, it's not too much to assume you should talk to a guy that the game takes the time out to stop what you're doing and say "talking to this guy is important." Honestly, insofar as a problem even exists, I think this is a streamer-specific problem. This is a mistake that can only be made if you're trying to rush through content to make it entertaining for an audience. Personally, I don't think games should be designed with the intent of being entertaining to an audience other than the player as a primary focus. Don't take the wrong message from this comment, overall you make some excellent points in the video, but I'm a nitpicky sort of guy, and this was one nit that I felt deserved picking.
^ Agree. The Bagin example is very nitpicking at best. PLA gets a pass on the tutorials for me, unlike Gen 7 and 8. In fact, I don't see anyone else complain about how to expand the Satchel slots. Even on Reddit.
100% agree. Most other things I could at the very least understand how it COULD be an issue (motion controls for example i thought were blatant but I guess it's easy enough to miss so fair enough calling that out). Bagin though was 100% not the game's fault. The excuse of "I thought he meant pokemon storage" falls flat when just reading the text he specifically talks about your satchel, on top of his name literally being BAG-in. Only other issue I had was he seemed to linger on certain issues and repeat complaints a lot. Listening to the complaints about fast travel went way longer than it should have with him mentioning the problem like 2 or 3 times about how dated it is (a fair complaint mind you, but presented awfully IMO). Other than that it was either good points or simple "agree to disagree" things that are staples of video essays like these.
No sorry not buying it. Elden Ring quickly has become the gold standard for basically everything gaming related. This game has ZERO tutorials and is as hands off as possible. It still conveys very clearly to the player what he has to do with good game design. Nope there is room for improvement for PLA. Nice cope though.

I've put over 200 hours into this game, and I'm still not use to the menus. I've tried to save before trying to sneak up on a Pokémon and scared it off by hoping on braviary.
it’s amazing to hear someone gush about mystery dungeon in a video game essay! it’s one of my favorite series and one of my biggest game dev inspirations!
I haven't played it, but I think I have to disagree on the opponent's turn order criticism. Final Fantasy X handles it better by not only showing the predicated order, but also how close they are to getting their turn. If you could visually see that your turn after theirs isn't immediate, you know it's a strong possibility they can pull off a Quick Hit, second hit combo. Then the 48:30 clip, I would surmise that hitting with the move has an impact on turn order, sort of like a hitstun. But then, I haven't played it to know for sure.
For con no. 13, I remember when you complete the Pokedex Kamado directly says he'll be giving the galaxy team to Cyllene when he retires or something...I don't remember all of the details, but I do remember that part anyway. (NOTE: I didn't watch most of the video besides the end since that's essentially the TL;DW of long video essays like this) (Also, I'm gonna edit this comment as i watch through the segment, so be prepared for some more edits) Edit #1 - Pretty sure with the wisps you could talk to the little girl and see how many wisps you have left in each area. I still think the quest is annoying though.
Giving a con point to something that doesn't need to be explained in this game was silly IMO, if anything, it's something that should have been hinted at in BDSP since they could have easily had a couple NPCs talk about the organization's past. I don't think it's so far fetched for an organization to go downhill after 100-200 years, with so many variables of things that could have happened over the years.
3:29:27 The worst may yet be to come, actually. As if “annual releases” weren’t bad enough, we must bear in mind that if Scarlet and Violet stick to their “late 2022” release window, it’s likely that in the span of a SINGLE year, we will have gotten three Pokémon games. Three! Let that sink in.
@@UncannyEXP yeah the thing isn't the time of development between games because they are as always, they just added a team to release an extra game (It's bad so many big releases in just a year tho, not for the developers, if not for the people because is like too much), but what we should be concerned is that the games are bigger, and harder to develop, but they have the same time of development, and yeah 3-4 years of development it would be alright if it wasn't that GF splits their team to make two Pokemon games, and this is a problem since XY, just a bit, but wasn't as bad like it is now in the Switch era, and it can get worse considering that now they are doing even bigger with Scarlet/Violet because they are supposed to be open-world
Imagine a pokemon mystery dungeon story with colosseum's complexity and double battles, with legends arceus's wild pokemon interactions, how amazing would that be
He brought up the fact that the tutorial wasn't clear that Bagin could increase satchel space, however I'm surprised he made no comment on Bagin's ridiculous rates and him only giving you one slot at a time, resulting in you having to pay about 4 million poke dollars to get the full capacity of the satchel. Another con that I don't know if it made it on the list or not (I'm not completely finished watching): This game is in DESPARATE need of a minimap I stg Also! One of my favorite theories about Ingo- It's very possible that he was the trainer/researcher in the Found Footage trailer. He was originally suppose to be the hero, but lost his memories and as such Arceus had to find another- the player. (Here: ua-cam.com/video/fY4nm0zQ5VY/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Zanolith )
You did notice that this is a Gen 4 game, did you? You remember what was so special about gen 4? You know? That one weather type everyone hated? Hear of fog? You know fog? That's why your moves are missing
What a lot people seem to be missing about Volo is that yes he is very twisted but he gradually became this way to avoid the pain he faced his with people. The Celestic people were a native tribe/clan run out the by early settlers that would later be known as the Diamond & Pearl Clans. Effectively erasing most of their presence and culture from history, besides barest scraps. Scattering to to the four winds. With Cognita and Volo being of the few survivors or descendants of. However the damage was done. As not only did they disregard Arceus' true role, but besmirched him in place of fabrication cult retellings of Dialga and Palkia, but with botched script and worship. With constant infighting and wars about. With the Pokemon being used or abused as well. Worst of all renames the land Hisui, instead of it's true name Sinnoh. Claiming to always been that way. So to witness this happens over time and knowing the truth yet initially be powerless to stop it, Volo sought out answers as to WHY. However his focus became a fixation then eventually to an obsession that he lost sight of his original desires in favor a twisted plan to set things back like they used to be. With extreme measures. Volo is basically what if Cynthia let her love of knowledge, history, and myths overdue her positives views mixed with the pain of not belonging anywhere. This twisting into them what Volo became. Just like how Cyrus became the way he was due to lack of positive human influence in his life and being only requested the good results from his family and peers, (barring his grandfather & Rotom), unlike his ancestor Cyllene. This leading him into thinking that the spirit itself is toxic and harmful to others and needing to be rid of it. Hence leading him wanting to also remake the world into what he saw as perfect. His want to be the center of it all was his saying others are incapable of knowing what's "right". So in the end Volo was overwhelmed by his curiosity and emotions, while Cyrus was overwhelmed by his high intelligence taken for granted by others in a negative outlook and lack of positive emotions.
@@veelogation3890 No it's from the games themselves from various npcs (Cyrus Platinum: Rotom hidden room, Sunnyshore, and his grandfather in post game desert area. Volo: Celestica people history how they mysteriously vanished, Cognita, Celestic town, Cynthia, and their culture and history overwritten by the hisuisns that would land later, paralelling real life Ainu history in the meji restoration era) and putting the context clues together. You just got know where to look at the game gives you. It's more connected than most give credit for. Along some basic psychoanalysis based upon dialogue and actions they take.
Ah! That makes sense. It's been too long since I played platinum, I'm looking forward to playing through it again. Makes sense that some was your headcanon based on context clues and links to history plus psychoanalysis. Good deductions, it feels like it all makes sense together.
@@veelogation3890 I mean it's less headcanon more finding the direct inspirations the Legends was based on, (like the colonialism effect on the Ainu people and the negative and positive effects on them by the mainland Japan & reflected by huisui practically overshadowed the real culture history if it's region and how both Diamond and Pearl clans having part of conflicts in the past over religious figures despite having half of the real answers and calling them "false gods"), and dialogue from Volo himself. Yeah Pokemon chose a controversial piece of history for a setting if you think long enough about it. Thankfully we don't see true dark aspects of it despite it being have implied to have happened with ingame lore.
2:37:54 they did that intentionally actually! clefable always had those weird little eye-circles as part of it's design, an odd design choice imo but it wasn't a mistake :)

(All the other footage would've been from my own playthroughs or official game trailers. I get comments all the time on the BDSP essay asking "what's the game at x timestamp?", and really the best way to ask is through the Discord server rather than comments if you really want to know what a particular game is)
I don't think it's in the good keeping and sense of 'informed' opinion to make such a long video and then drop 'made badly' in the title AH.
Also idk if he knows because i was far into the game when i found it, but you CAN press (iirc) Left trigger to shift between targets.
@@WeirdnessMaster Yea it's actually the A Button, if you keep ZL pressed you will lock your aim, and if you press A you'll shift the targets
a fun fact that makes this even better/worse is that you have the exact number of max markers stamps you can put on your map lines up to the wisps. this implies they wanted and planned for you to chart them all, with no extra stamps for anything else to help it be charted that way. wanna switch to putting down neat pokemon spot stamps? too bad, because now you wont have enough to also chart the max number of wisps until the quest is done. when i found this out i nearly ate my switch
You know if Pokémon really wanted to add voice acting they could just do something similar to genshin where they replace your name with a more generic term like traveler… THEY WOULD LITERALLY JUST HAVE TO CALL YOU TRAINER!!!
Exactly genshin supremacy
but literally everyone is a pokemon trainer in Pokemon but only you are called a traveler in Genshin
@@cosmictrainer2919 oh hell nah
Or in this game's case, just "stranger" since... well you've literally just arrived here
Or like in Fire Emblem Three Houses, where different characters call you different things depending on their personality or relationship with you.
Just wanna say: Clefable's eyes are actually meant to look the way they do. The official art has the 'weird circles' round them.
@@flareonguy7922 My theory is that Legends: Arceus was sort of a secret test to see how an open-world pokemon game would do with the public
@@komarunaegi7460 especially when it came to the story, by the time of the postgame it's pretty clear Arceus sent you to stop Volo since no-one else can match him in terms of battling skill and to help the people of the past build their relationship with pokemon that leads to modern Sinnoh.
How do you unlock that scene where kamado says that?
I've never believed Giratina to be a villain, he's always been chilling in his cave or pocket dimension until someone comes and annoy him.
That’s why I hate people saying they’re “Pokémon Satan”
@@Mushie_lol I mean, Satan is not always pure evil in all interpretations. In some cases the comparison applies.
@@Mushie_lol I mean it's only implied Giratina is some sort of demon (what with its design and it being banished to the Distortion World), but other than that, Giratina isn't evil; it's just destructive when things get out of hand.
48:15 Fog is active. Accuracy is lowered. That said, the real frustration is that the move information doesn't update to account for fog.
Like why would they re-add fog because it went over so well in original gen 4, but at least in that game you could get rid of it
I literally thought moves could just miss the entire game, never realized there was a mechanic behind it lol.
GameFreak uses the agile style on their games. They make them faster, but lose quality in the process.
I think that SMT V and Final Fantasy XV show that production time isn’t THAT important.
lol true
@@charnalk5572 excuse me if I consider you to be biased Demi-fiend, but I disagree
Still even Persona 5 felt more like a PS3 game than a PS4 one
@@charnalk5572 It should've been released earlier because I don't see whatever improvements took so long. It looked like a lazy PS4 port.
Wow dude you really need another hobby
@@Amateracu1991DFFOO You watched a video three hours and forty minutes long about this game.
@@LilyCelebiFlipnote How do you know he didn't skim?

I've noticed a ton of his critiques hinge on him not really interacting with the game or reading what NPCs and in game tutorials say.

Legends arceus did more right with its open world than botw did.
@@rpgfanatic9719 Hilarious
You got some of these wrong:
- Volo does imply heavily on the reason as of why he tried to do what he did tho.
(Also, I'm pretty sure the pokedex red arrows are explained somewhere in the game, because I knew what it meant and I didn't figure it out nor searched for it online)
- You can check how many wisps are left in each area talking to the kid that gave you the quest.
(There is still room for argument that they shouldn't be there in the first place tho, as always)
Many nitpicks aside, some valid criticism was made here.
I would also like to add to this thread
-the battle system is BAD, it is not balanced, it is not fun, it is much worse than old battle systems.
@@JordnD That's why I said you could chaulk it up to a bad interpretation of the artwork, but it's still accurate to the artwork nonetheless.
@@R0ck3tM0nsT3R I'm pretty sure it was intentional, which all I'm arguing frankly. You can feel free to dislike the interpretation.
I came to the comments to see if anyone expressed this before I left my own mention. Glad someone else caught this and had a similar opinion :)
I know they need to chill the fuck out and wait and work on the games more they all of these games could of been amazing if they took their time
The reason your 100% accuracy moves were missing was due to overworld weather effects (eg fog) which reduce accuracy and with your turn order in the ursaring fight the opponent was never paralysed and only had one turn as the game stated they would. The game said “it may be unable to move” this was reminding the player that ursaring was paralysed however the ursaring never got “full paralysed” and never lost a turn and so when it attacked your pachirisu that was its first move.
Despite its issues I really did enjoy this title a lot especially as a nerd on Japanese mythology and Ainu culture
As for Volo, I think a lot of his behavior can be explained by him being it's just a read as an indigenous person.

As for why Volo wanted to destroy the universe, I’m wondering if that wasn’t his initial intention. Maybe he just really wanted to meet Arceus, to the point he’d summon Giratina to do it, and Giratina’s influence twisted him over time.
He is not going to respond to this. Not an offense to you. Moreso to him.
Finally somebody that actually criticizes the game instead of just saying that it looks like a PS2 game
About an hour in and so far, nothing worth giving criticism about the game so far apart from storyline and travel between locations.

A move's accuracy rating is (and always has been, since the beginning of the series) only 1/4 of the formula for whether a move hits or not. It also depends on the user's accuracy stat, the target's evasiveness stat, and modifiers (such as weather conditions). A move's accuracy stat being 100 doesn't mean it will never miss, that's why moves that actually can't miss like Swift are always explicitly labelled as such
About the cranidos.... you can just stun him with an item, throw a ball and that's it. Dude, you suffered more than what you needed to for some stuff.
Couldn’t you just mark a certain amount grab them then mark the next set?
Good video,
though some things I'd like to note:
Clefairy and Clefable always had these eye indents, and Bidoof always had black, dead eyes.
Fog. Fog.
What I'm more baffled by is his decision to use a *Fire/Rock type* against a Water type alpha. Like...I'm honestly surprised it didn't get oneshot.
So theres a qeather effect in the game and they dont explain its affect or actually clarify when its in effect? Or did he just miss something?
Series are formulaic by nature
@@pn2294
Yeah but there are degrees to which you can be formulaic and pokemon is on the high end of that in my opinion.

My wisps were bugged and I couldn’t even get spiritomb.
1:25:20 fun fact: all the trees in this game are actually 4 times as large as they appear, the main character just isn’t big brain enough to see
1:54:03
That’s actually intended, it’s a backstep that Pokémon sometimes do idly. They often do it when you lock on or are facing that specific Pokémon, making it a little harder to catch them.
2:15:13 the late night theme reminds me of a couple subnautica themes, and it always reminds me of the calm parts of subnautica.
2:15:16 you should have lol
2:45:50 I think that the amount of options was similar to sword and shield, the only major differences being that there aren’t gloves or packs to customize.
In the cons section, I think that players not knowing how they and Ingo got to Hisui is on purpose, as a mystery to leave to the fans. It could’ve had more hints while not having an answer though.
I mean, it was a shiny infernape sooo......
But to me, it really felt like Gamefreak forgot these characters and worlds are supposed to exist outside just the short window the story takes place in
I enjoyed legends… a lot less than it seems most people did.
That’d be good, but that’d also take decent writing skills, which we all know Game Freak doesn’t have
Can I steal this for a Nuzlocke fic in the ambiguously distant future?
It is a pretty AND good game, regardless of its flaws
Watching these videos just makes me miss the pixel art style more. Pokemon's new 3D look is soulless.
In the mainline games. Not in Stadium, Coliseum and Battle Revolution.
I agree. I prefer the pixel art style. The nintendo switch store should've included: blue, red, yellow, silver, gold, white, and black.
I like the pixely 3d of the 3ds games. I wish they would’ve expanded on that rather than going full 3d. I simply just don’t think they have the skills to do this style.

I don’t play competitive but I think Legends Arceus had such a cool and quick system for training, I bet lots of people would delve into competitive Pokémon if it was as simple as Legends Arceus
@@lognacho well they can keep that mainline system if they want, just make it even faster
I don’t even play competitive (or new Pokémon for that matter… I might buy Violet), I’m just parroting what I’ve heard people say, that it doesn’t need to take as long as it does (and my understanding is that it’s currently not nearly as frustrating or time consuming as it once was), but for convenience they should just give everyone the dev tools to create Pokémon as lab test tube babies, EV and IVs perfected, ready for a tournament
---
That's my short list of things Competitive needs to do.
Even Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Exploers Sky/Gates?
@@mrex666productions7 Honestly couldn't tell ya, having never played them. I _think_ I've heard those were pretty good but I may be confusing them for another in that series since I've only played one and the titles are too similar to tell them apart unless you're rather familiar with the series.
Thinking about it, all Pokémon games have that issue. I've played enough mainline to know them but the spin-offs... not so much. This fact makes me sympathize with grandparents and I kind of hate that the inexorable march of time has done this to me. Time...
There actually is an NPC who explains that mist lowers accuracy. I can't remember where he/she is but he/she exists.

XD
The video games are merely an anchor for everything else.
(Like watch their respective episodes)
And...
Okay, Bugged Diamond and Shipped Early Pearl is literally the funniest and most clever thing I've heard in a while lol
To me, it seems like in an RPG, a genre in which exploring and talking to everybody you meet has been firmly established as an important mechanic since the days of Dragon Quest 1 and Ultima, it's not too much to assume you should talk to a guy that the game takes the time out to stop what you're doing and say "talking to this guy is important."
Honestly, insofar as a problem even exists, I think this is a streamer-specific problem.

(NOTE: I didn't watch most of the video besides the end since that's essentially the TL;DW of long video essays like this) (Also, I'm gonna edit this comment as i watch through the segment, so be prepared for some more edits)
Edit #1 - Pretty sure with the wisps you could talk to the little girl and see how many wisps you have left in each area.
It's not like they just started making the game after legends released
Three games, made by two different developers, all spanning years of development between them. Its not as bad as you're making it out to be.
@@UncannyEXP yeah the thing isn't the time of development between games because they are as always, they just added a team to release an extra game (It's bad so many big releases in just a year tho, not for the developers, if not for the people because is like too much), but what we should be concerned is that the games are bigger, and harder to develop, but they have the same time of development, and yeah 3-4 years of development it would be alright if it wasn't that GF splits their team to make two Pokemon games, and this is a problem since XY, just a bit, but wasn't as bad like it is now in the Switch era, and it can get worse considering that now they are doing even bigger with Scarlet/Violet because they are supposed to be open-world
Imagine a pokemon mystery dungeon story with colosseum's complexity and double battles, with legends arceus's wild pokemon interactions, how amazing would that be
Putting this in my watch later, but I saw the title and my only first impression was "So, every modern Pokémon game?"
Another con that I don't know if it made it on the list or not (I'm not completely finished watching): This game is in DESPARATE need of a minimap I stg
Also! One of my favorite theories about Ingo- It's very possible that he was the trainer/researcher in the Found Footage trailer.
I really love all this background. How do you know about it? Is this lore from the Pokemon Adventures manga or somewhere else?
@@veelogation3890 No it's from the games themselves from various npcs (Cyrus Platinum: Rotom hidden room, Sunnyshore, and his grandfather in post game desert area. Volo: Celestica people history how they mysteriously vanished, Cognita, Celestic town, Cynthia, and their culture and history overwritten by the hisuisns that would land later, paralelling real life Ainu history in the meji restoration era) and putting the context clues together.
