Pokémon has become the literal definition of "too big to fail", because if any other video game franchise had these same problems, it would be seen as unacceptable.
@@TtegeggJedi survivor isn’t as bad as SV was at launch, or even how it is now, but on PC it does have quite a few issues. Console ports are mostly all good though (PS5 had some pre-launch bugs but they got patched out before release thankfully)
Playing scarlet and violet you can practically feel the panic of the developers slapping areas together hours before the release deadline. I feel a bit bad for them having their names attached to a product that is so clearly not ready
Yeah I noticed this as I played it when it came out, there is a lot of good things they did with this game but dang was it an unfinished mess that still continues to cause problems months later. It just sucks that the 4 or 5 good things about this game overshadowed the 100s of things wrong with this game that everyone will defend to death saying that it doesn't matter and it will continue to be better eventually, only for them to jump ship with the new Zelda game and now people are starting to realize the missed potential these games have. It is really funny how all of this turned out even for me who liked it at first but then hated it due to said problems this game has and got ridiculed for my trash opinion only to agree months later
We can count our blessings that the story is at least somewhat good. But if Gens 7 and 8 are to show something is that they don't care and will just keep writing the usual paint-by-numbers plot if the next generation decides to do away with freeform exploration altogether
There are a lot of parallels between TPC/GameFreak and Sega/Sonic Team. It took way too long for Sega to realize that they need to give the team more time to actually make their games. TPC should have come to this realization with Sword and Shield, but they didn't even after the team asked them to delay the game so they could polish it up. Hopefully they have after this game because I'm certain Game Freak can make something great if they're actually given a reasonable amount of time to do so. The unfortunate problem here is that the corporate suits are more worried about releasing games on holidays to increase sales instead of actually making a great product. The way these games are, it's ridiculous that they have the audacity to charge full price. Even Sega realized slapping a $60 price tag on Forces was insane, and unlike Pokemon, that game had voice acting for every single line in the game whereas Pokemon doesn't have a single voiced line in the five full price games they released on Switch.
That's Pokémon for ya. The Devs clearly care by the passion you can see in parts of the game but they can only make rushed shit when they only have a year of development.
Do people actuality interprete Sada saving Koraidon as (attempting) to be proof that she was actually a good person? I always saw it as confirmation of who she was: someone obsessed with their research until the very end, caring more about it than their life. Giving her life for a symbol of her research and leaving her son behind without remorse.
I do think that someone thatcares more about scienific developtment than their own life is kinda admirable, but the common interpretation of saving Koraidon because she cares for him as a life form that deserves to live is straight up nonsensical
@@cursedGalataeaThat or it came to the latter conclusion after copying everything else. The base framework may be identical to Sadas, but what the AI does with it overtime may differ to what she'd do.
The Pokémon Company is doing what Bethesda has been doing for years, only with no way for modders to fix the games and no backlash for releasing in any state and patching into playability.
@@excalibur493rue, but Bethesda at least gives you access to a mod page on launch for the console versions. So you can access the unofficial Skyrim bug patch with a brand new copy on the Xbox. The switch’s hostility to modding is obnoxious and inaccessible to most people. Hell if it weren’t for the accessibility of Skyrim modding I wouldn’t even prolly be here right now talking about mods at all (I’m not disagreeing w u or anything, I bet the mods are nice, I just wanna put in my 2 sense :>)
Maybe the target audience of Bethesda is a major factor for this unfortunately. Pokémon being targeted towards kids and teens makes it easier to build complacency, cus they’ve known no different. Bethesda having a much older audience and thus people who understand how marketing and game design works (lots of fans being game devs themselves) makes criticism more common and accepted/embraced by other fans
I think Scottfalco put it best when he said, essentially, that "pokemon takes one step toward where the rest of the industry reached ten years ago, and we all applaud it for the progress"
Lmao. These games don't even have voice acting despite being developed by a multi billion dollar company, and share prices with games like God of War, Xenoblade, and Zelda. Pokemon is more like 30 years behind at this point.
@@EpiKLyeah while I'd say it's not *quite* 30 years behind, it is pretty close. GameFreak *clearly* either can't handle development now, or just don't care enough to bother. SO much of the 3d modeling and physics were (and still are) broken, and this is after they've made about 5 games in 3d. There's absolutely no reason that the textures should be comparable to a GameCube game - but coliseum had BETTER textures on several things
Ever since Pokémon went 3D; the post-game content of the games has been lacking, but now they even have the audacity to charge us half the price of their overpriced games for us to even get to play content that should've been in the main game in the first place. In Sword&Shield they put the Move Tutor in the DLC, for Pete's sake. I swear-- Pokémon has been dead to me ever since the Dexit controversy.
This is just fricking egregious. They have overpriced games of continuously dropping quality, and in order to experience a decent post game (that in anything before 3D would just be part of the game itself) you must now essentially pay for the game again (the combined price of both the DLC is damn near the price of the game itself). So utterly disgusting, and unfortunately it will never get better - it's Pokémon, and people will fork over money for Pokémon no matter how absurdly priced it is.
for real! release a dog shit game and then lock large portions of content behind DLC. I cannot believe that pokemon has gotten to a point where that's what's happening to it, moreover, I am absolutely baffled that people continue to defend it. I can't see myself ever enjoying or being excited for a new pokemon game again, and that is so so sad for something that I grew up with and held so dear for so long.
I hate that people keep enabling Nintendo to pull these stunts too. I thought it was scummy so I didn't buy the sword/shield dlc yet this very creator admitted to paying for it 🤦♂️ does he not realize he's part of the problem??
I felt the gyms should have been close to how they work in the Manga / Anime, where the amount of gym badges you have directly correlates to how strong the next gym is, so no matter what order you take, you will not hit a hard wall. This would also create replayability as you could then replay the game in the other direction and face the gyms on a different order.
Pokemon Crystal Clear did this! Not only can you do the gyms in any order, with scaling teams, they leveraged this to fix Johto's leveling curve, and once you clear a gym, you can rematch them as often as you like, at any badge level you're up to at that point. So, you can take a new team through lower, level appropriate battles, take on a gym's new team later, or even, incredibly, train at a gym to get stronger. Y'know. Like what they're supposed to do.
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 Yes! I knew there was a ROM that did this but I couldn't remember the name, thanks! I hope someone makes a similar ROM for later games like Gen4
@@rtiq270 They already do that here with original level captures being tied to obedience; I think grinding as an option to overlevel should still be allowed, IMO.
@@zjzr08 Thanks for the correction, I was actually completely wrong and they did do this in SV. I don't know where I got it that it didn't, but that's my bad.
Although on the surface it was cool, but after say 8 seconds it becomes annoying. i put on my own music to drown that shit out. or just go strait to the gym leader just to shut her up. but then i lose out on experience, which sucks. :/
I've almost completely fallen out of love with pokemon, which as an autistic person who has hyperfixated on it for 10+ years, is downright impressive of the pokemon company
I thought I was just growing out of the games but after replaying some of the old ones like Ruby and Soul Silver and still having fun I realized that these new games are actually just shitty
@Marlena499 You like the old games because you played them and have nostalgia for them. If you were a child today (the target audience) you wouldn't enjoy them nearly as much.
The three main Pokemon dicussion videos. The 7-8 hour ORAS Review, the 4 hour Sword/Shield review (RadicalSoda) and now the 7 hour Scarlet/Violet video.
@Just4 Universe After watching half of this video, I can definitely tell that this one is the weakest however. It's just not a very compelling video and for something that's 7 hours long, it should be able to hold your attention in the long-run.
I'm glad the outrage about Pokemon's development issues have been noticeably growing since X and Y and finally seem to be hitting a fever pitch. To be clear, these issues have existed since Gen 3 in some form or another and been growing like a tumor every generation. The GBA could absolutely make RPGs without relying on squared off tiles for the entire game world, but Gen 3 used that anyways because that's the fastest way to do it. Nearly every other RPG built for the GBA from the ground up has much more detailed overworld visuals and much more animation going on during battles. Simply put Gamefreak has been forced to keep an absolutely insane dev schedule for decades now, and they've only been able to accomplish it by making cuts and building their games and dev tools for speed first and anything else second. It's just finally hit the point where even with cutbacks game development has ballooned to the point that they cannot finish a new game with a new gimmick in time to hit those deadlines. Pokemon Company needs to take a hint and work with Gamefreak on this instead of running them in to the ground for the sake of merch.
Right? Seriously, I'd actually enjoy Pokemon games way more with at least an extra year of development between releases. It will both add an extra appreciation for the current generation and actually allow them to make a completed game
That's a great point and one I've rarely seen. There was absolutely no reason for such limited graphics on a 32-bit system capable of sprite scaling/warping among other things... I remember people freaking out over the "3D" graphics in Diamond and Pearl... Welcome to 1996-97, Gamefreak. Seriously, there was no excuse for the lack of camera control and diagonal movement in those games...
@@Carsonj13 You know the GBA had "Golden Sun" and "Golden Sun The Lost Age" and the "Harry Potter The Prisoner Of Azkaban GBA RPG" game that looked better than any GBA Pokémon game. if Pokémon scarlet and violet have craft able TMs from Pokémon parts why not let us buy Pokémon craft parts with "League Points" that would fix the grinding issue for TMs. whats even sadder "Golden Sun The Dark Dawn" on the Nintendo DS looks better than all of the Pokémon games on the switch even "Golden Sun the Dark Dawns" Summon animation on the Nintendo DS has a way higher Graphics count than any Pokémon game on the switch right now. "Golden Sun The Dark Dawns" summon animation on the Nintendo DS looks way better and higher Quality than a summon from like something from final fantasy 7 and final fantasy 8 from the PlayStation 1 era that's nuts. The goddess Procne summon from Golden the dark dawn has higher graphics than both final fantasy 7 and final fantasy 8 games from the PlayStation 1 era I mentioned and that made me realize "Camelot studio" made the "Golden Sun Dark Dawn game have higher battle scale animation than any ps1 game "On a freaking Nintendo DS cartridge" no less let that sink in.
There was a bit in the Pokémon origin anime, when Red is about to face Brock, Brock says something along the lines of "This is your first badge challenge? These two should do" while picking up two pokéballs from a full tray, implying gym leaders provide a challenge for trainers adequate to their level. Leading up to Scarlet & Violet I expected this to be an actual mechanic, it was really disappointing to see it wasn't. It would even make sense for most trainers, mostly the other students, to level up the more objectives you complete, given they've all been out in the world for as long as you have and should also be getting stronger as time passes.
Also you’re asking for WAY too much. You’re asking the developers to both: 1) level scale pokemon based on badges obtain. 2) the amount of pokemon they have.
For me the fact that the pokemon and characters look so good is actually a drawback given that the backgrounds look like they were made in roblox studio. It's like no matter where I look on the screen the game is determined to give me aesthetic whiplash.
I hadn't even realized you could compare the overworld to freaking Roblox Studios. Like, Paldea legit looks like those personal "default place" games on people's profiles with no modifications made to them at all. And I hate that I can now see that.
About the size of the pokemon files, most pokemon models are around 1mb total, taking into account the models, textures (which are the heaviest of all the files), rigging and animation. As of generation 7 (USUM), the total size of ALL pokemon models, including variants, was 1,24gb uncompressed. Those models are in high poly and without outlines, as the 240p and outlines are only done by the 3ds, meaning since gen6 the models have been the same, with the only variation being the device they are projected in. In fact, if you have a 3ds with CFW, a single 1kb file with 2 lines of code removes all outlines, and if you use Citra you can see how the models work perfectly at 1080p resolution. TL;DR: Even if we had all the national dex in S/V, the size woudln't increase past half a GB
@@zjzr08 The textures don't really have much layers. Well, they don't have layers at all: - The body is stored in a single layer - The eyes and mouth states are stored in another image, each eye and mouth state being a part of that image - The maps are also stored in single files A complete texture for a normal pokemon is around 200kb to 400kb, which is pretty normal. They'd have to really, REALLY fuck it up to make it go double or even triple that size. If the textures alone (since anything else doesn't change) now take triple what everything combined took, which I really doubt that since the only thing they'd have to do is clean a small portion of pixelated texturing, would mean they have made the biggest fuck up in terms of compression and optimization of the past decade
I really hope eventually they make a Pokemon card where the art shows someone half in a wall or something, to truly immortalize how broken this game is. I will make an entire binder of those cards if they do.
The truest tragedy of this game is that it has the makings to be one of the best Pokemon games of all time... And then was released like 3 years earlier than any development team could possibly produce an open world game in let alone one as tiny and fractured as Gamefreak lol. Pure travesty.
Not gonna lie as a Sonic fan it fucks me up that the franchise STILL hasn't lived down Sonic 06 despite it being nearly 20 years old at this point, yet game freak releases their version of Sonic 06 every year and only now is the public starting to be like "wow these pokemon games aren't as good as they used to be :("
At least Sega had the decency to give Sonic Frontiers some free DLC. Pokémon couldn't even be bothered to release a game that's WORTH 60 dollars in the first place and then proceed to charge 30 more dollars so that they could purchase the postgame as DLC.
I agree these games are bad, but to be truly fair, Sonic 06 was a far worse, less fun, less playable game. Many people have been enjoying Scarlet and Violet genuinely even though they were rushed, and they are still playable. I haven’t heard anyone, even the most diehard fans or kids, saying that they felt like a kid again or really enjoyed playing Sonic 06
Having played Violet, the AI Turo dialogue you hear as you journey through area zero made sense to me as just being Prof Turo himself. Because he was the “future guy,” it kinda made sense that he would talk like that. So I was genuinely surprised when I found out he was a robot, and the scene of him breaking down over the intercom spooked me a bit. But I can imagine that, if you play Scarlet, it’s a dead giveaway that she’s a robot.
The Piers Singing scene in SW/SH is the mark of what Pokémon games are today Just undefendable if you have any sort of standard at all for what you buy Of course, the majority of sales are people who don't (aka parents who just pick it up for their children), so they have zero reason to actually invest anything into the games, they just have to stay barely good enough for kids Any time someone praises the game it's always "It's the best *pokemon* game, it's a good *pokemon* game", because if you compare it to actually worthy it falls apart very fast Oh and also reminder they're 90 dollars now, not 60, since they just slash what would be post game and call it dlc
@@AcousticHarmonia maybe theres something extra than what we get from regular dlcs, like in splatoon3 the dlc is 25 rather than the 20 dollars in splatoon2, thats bc it had a new lobby area (5 dollars +u get a special namecard) + new story area and new content. but then again its pokemon so its probably just for more money
I think the biggest problem is game freaks insistance to force out games once a year, when most takes years to produce. They've doomed themselves at this point.
The fact these games sold so well despite being as bad as Cyberpunk 2077 in terms of unforgivably unfinished is just sad to me. And people will still defend it as if nothing is wrong, .
I bought mine _used_ and I _still_ feel like part of the problem. With how these clearly rushed games still broke 10 million copies, I shudder to think how bad Gen 10 is gonna be.
@@punkysnarksWouldn't be surprised if Gen 10 has so many bugs and glitches, that the game just crashes just after choosing your starter, making them mostly unplayable for everyone
The infuriating thing is how many second chances players will give Pokémon, while games that have gone through bona fide redemption arcs still get flak because the same players decided the first impression already burned bridges with them.
Never did I expect a 7 Hour Review of this game and things like a Story Rewrite or delving into the technicalities of being an Open World game. This is the SV Review to end all SV Reviews. A years worth of production has paid off, my friend.
Can't believe people say that the writing in these games are the best part of it - only to realize that the writing was lazier than people actually think it is.
@@Loner098 Sadly the writing in pretty much every mainline Pokemon game has a ton of wasted potential; people say SV are the best, or that SM is the best, or that Legends is the best, or that BW is the best, but even those all have pretty big flaws; which only BW has ever attempted to rectify (partially through one version's postgame [specifically ONE location] but mostly through the storyline of its sequel games).
@extremmefan7305 I just want to pretend that the Ultra games never even existed because they butchered the story of Sun & Moon HARD. They tried making Lusamine the good guy. And it didn't help with how atrociously slow the pacing was in the gen 7 games. The extra content (for the Ultra games) wasn't even worth it either.
*SPOILER WARNING* I don't think the reveal of how the original professor dies was a "they were good all along" twist but another example of their obsession with creating what they view as paradise, aka bringing pokemon from either the far future or ancient past and trying to force them into an ecosystem not meant for them, they were so obsessed with this vision that they even died trying to ensure the survival of the box legendary so they can be part of their vision of paradise and yeah their motivation sounds dumb to us the audience, but that's the thing with obsessions, they rarely come off as logical to outside observers, and frankly I like that the AI version was written the way it was as I found it a refreshing subversion of the typical evil AI trope
Yeah, I always said about the game, the final scene was good until the robot says "Your dad/mom actually really loved you" before fucking off into the time machine. If it was something more somber like "Yes, your dad/mom wasn't perfect, but you don't need to let their mistakes hurt you for the rest of your life". An encouraging speech that takes advantage of the fact it's being told by a robot who is a different person than the professor but has enough data and time to process what happened and shares that conclusion with Arven. Pokémon can have an engaging and meaningful story if you give the writers more than two months, a can of monster and a napkin with "power of friendship, also legendary pokemon or some shit"
Even the AI points out that it cannot “logically understand why they’d follow such a foolish dream” Obsession is supposed to be silly, nonsensical, to the non deluded, it’s stupid and makes zero sense, but that’s what makes it good. The story is also purposely full of plot holes and timelines that don’t match because of stuff with terapagalos in the DLC, so maybe that’ll help clear stuff up
The issue is that their obsession is so vaguely defined and in such a short time that you never get the idea of why the hell they think that bringing pokèmon from the past or future would somehow help in creating a paradise. Had the reveal been built up to throughout the game, it would've made more sense. But there's no space for it because they have to cram the game full of half-baked gimmicks that don't amount to anything, like the three separate "paths" that are an artificial marketing embellishment of what Pokèmon had been doing from the start. Well, that and because they have to rush these games out to have one out every year. Some details are also hidden because the reveal is supposed to come out in the DLC (which is also very scummy), but even if the DLC cleared things up, it wouldn't erase the incompetent buildup of the whole plot.
"it'll teleport you to your last valid position. or, the beginning of the game for some reason." it teleports you to your last heal spot as a failsafe, if you repeatedly fall in water over and over.
I noticed that too- it only sent them back to the home because they fell in the water over and over and the game assumed they were stuck or too dumb to get out 🤪
Funny thing about the SV pre order backpack… There is no Pokemon Center European site. If you live in Europe (excluding the UK) no limited edition virtual backpack for you, unless you use a proxy shipping service. So it’s *even more* limited.
I feel like i miss out on so much pokemon stuff cause not only is Gamestop now really rare here, but I havent ever even seen a Pokemon Center. I get my stuff through other stores, which means no exclusive pokemon stuff or anything like that
5:02:38 These comparisons make me so sad. Around the time gen 4 released my friends and I were so optimistic, thinking that once Pokémon would hit consoles, it would be the best thing to ever exist. Great games that would truly allow us to immerse ourselves in the world. Instead we got something that literally looks like someone modeled a few cliffs and hills after one month of learning Blender (letting texturing slide) and a few Pokémon aimlessly standing around basically saying "hey, I'm only here for you to interact with me". And then it doesn't even run properly. It just feels like gamefreak robbed us of what Pokémon could have been. What we (my friends and I) always thought, they themselves might have wanted it to become at some point. And that will never happen, because there will always be someone to order their 11th Eevee plushy with their preordered double pack.
I had to comment because I fully understand the feeling you have, I remember the spin off games that released on the Wii consoles and I remembered being so excited hoping the future titles off the DS systems would be even a fraction of it all. I even tried Legends and was pleasantly surprised. I never imagined they’d release a mainline game like this.
Your comment probably explains my thoughts near perfectly. Especially since I adored the spin off games on the Wii and always imagined how a mainline game could look
I remember those types of dreams as a kid :( the whole “Wowie what if they made a super awesome Pokémon adventure game on the console like Skyrim” That dream is dead now I suppose. We “got it”, but we didn’t get what we deserved from such a massive IP with so much money.
Game freak doesn’t have enough staff to actually complete a Pokémon game within the strict time limits they have. They can’t delay the game because they would lose billions in merchandise sales. Pokémon is now a merchandise company first and a video game company second
There are two things about that rewrite section that i have issues with: First being Team Stars antagonism, specifically the leaders. I think it would play out better if the grunts were the ones doing the bullying, with the leaders either ignorant or unwilling to see how their ideals are being corrupted by those they're meant to look over. It could have those leaders act as a parallel to the school overlooking what goes on beneath them. The other is how the distinction between Sada and AI Sada was lost. The idea that the very logical AI was able to see the flaws of the very emotionally driven originals plan while being unable to act against her programming was a neat subversion of the typical "evil ai" plot that gets lost in the rewrite.
That’s what I disagree with this analysis, it claims Sada was a “good” person when she was very clearly not and the AI, being fucking AI, realised the consequences left by the original professor was more severe than what it seemed
Yeah, I think those were parts where the rewrite stumbled- other than that, though, it was an *amazing* retelling, and I'm really glad someone decided to have a go at it!
I like Scarlet and violet but can’t in good faith recommend it to anyone till either it suddenly stops being a broken mess or goes on sale for less then $20, which would still be a hard thing to recommend
I love how you ran from a Blipbug, just to run into a Fletchling you also ran from, just to run into a Hoppip you ALSO ran from. And as you get away from that, there's just a Lechonk nearby staring into your eyes to assert dominance, letting you know that you were only spared by its capricious whims.
Literally when? I'm serious; who was actually stupid enough to defend this game on launch because since last November, all I've seen about these games are memes making fun of it (rightly so). It's the lowest rated mainline Pokemon game in the franchise so I don't think any sort of astroturfing has been terribly effective.
When was criticizing SV a crime??? All I've seen is people criticizing it! Mostly still enjoying it despite its many issues, but criticizing all the same.
@@Seergun i still see a lot of people that dogpile you if you call it unfinished or bugged or something. Its usually the biggest fanboys being louder than everyone else, making it feel like criticism isn't allowed, i think
Quite literally 85% of the pokemon fans that I know either hate the game or are indifferent to it. SV was just awful. There is no redeeming SV. Legit the whole "theyll buy it anyways" effect was prob in preorders, but now people wont preorder the game, since its not the quality they expect. Pokemon has lost a lot of confidence within the community these past 3 years.
Violet crashed on me a total of 26 times before I finished it, 18 on a regular Switch and 8 times on the OLED version, which makes me believe the crashes aren't because of the limited software, but because the game dumps so much trash data and has horrible optimization in general, trying to keep up with whatever random shit spawns off camera. I loved playing Violet because, I honestly am a sucker for Pokemon (Also known as Consoomer) and actually enjoyed the new mechanics, mons, shiny hunting and raids, but that doesn't mean I will turn a blind eye to its issues and how much of a mess this fucking game is. I remember two years ago, my friends telling me they wished Pokemon went Full Open World, and I showed them the Wild Area in SwSh and they went "That doesn't count, it's a small bit and it has horrible pop-in" and told them TPC is not ready for an Open World format and they berated me, now they barely touch Scarlet and Arceus because of how messy it is, and I go "So, open empty world right?", I hate being that guy but I warned them, even in trailers they noticed the horrible frame rate and textures, but they went the 'footage not final' route. I love Pokemon, but I wish they did better and just fucking hired more people to work on them and just 'our small dev team' bs, if they have strict deadlines, get more people. Otherwise, do not set deadlines and delay your shit until you have a product that is worth showing for your consumers.
Funny enough SwSh's Wild Area from what I know was a last minute addition; while I give them a thumbs up for half-trying with this open world I guess, it is apparent they should've probably went the Let's Go route first of being more top down but explorative, unlike Alola and Galar without the Wild Area which were virtually purely linear IMO.
@@zjzr08 I think I heard something similar, but I cannot recall if it was legit or fake. Either way, the Wild Area would've been a decent enough Pseudo Open World if it had better rendering and optimization so you could see mons from faraway and the game 100% focused its resources so it resembled kinda like a small zone in Arceus. I do remember the supposed leaked alpha pics of SwSh, where it was running on 3DS, which allowed me to give GF a bit of a freebie because I cannot imagine how hard swapping development from 3DS to the Switch and having their deadline set fucked them over. But now that Arceus and SV are out, I see they haven't gotten ahold of the software they are working with and won't let go of traditions.
I really want to thank you SO much for mentioning accessibility with shiny Pokémon and also with the lighting flashing! Not only with the shit lighting is it really difficult to see colour differences, especially in tiny Pokémon like Tandemaus, but it can also trigger seizures, partial seizures, migraines and nausea. Of which I get partial seizures and migraines which completely ruin my enjoyment of the game. I also really, really wish they would have just increased the shiny odds and gave us the OPTION to toggle on Let’s Go’s sparkles or Arceus’ jingle, if they thought getting shiny Pokémon was now too easy. But instead they had to punish disabled people just to cater to the try-hards who complained on twitter. Now shiny hunting is slightly more annoying but still rather easy for abled people and really fucking frustrating and sometimes *impossible* for disabled/chronically ill people! I’m literally SO mad about this! Because although I’m not colourblind, I am chronically ill and I get migraines with visual distortions! Often they’re triggered by flashing lights. This then makes some small Pokémon like Flabebe or Pokémon in the water like Wooper impossible to see! I also have chronic fatigue and brain fog from my chronic illness so I’m not able to be particularly observant all of the time either. And top it off I have pretty bad myopia so even with my glasses I have kinda crap distance vision making shiny hunting really frustrating regardless of whether or not I’m docked to my 50 inch screen so I can actually somewhat *see* small Pokémon or if I’m in handheld mode and holding my switch 6cm in front of my face with glasses off just to see anything. And the auto battle feature doesn’t fix this because it’s to tedious and also sometimes I don’t even know if some small Pokémon are even there!! So I am CONSTANTLY squinting and straining and having to be hyper-vigilant when travelling around Scarlet’s overworld even when I’m not actively shiny hunting and I just cannot stress enough how mentally exhausting this is! This small change has basically ruined a huge part of the game for me because it artificially creates SO MUCH stress! Because even Pokémon who could be obviously shiny, I might miss them because I’m unwell and tired! And shiny hunting used to be something I did when I was trapped in bed all day and not feeling well and I was bored. Unless I was radar or dex nav chaining I could just turn my brain off and run around and watch one of my favourite shows. Now I can’t do that! Ever! The hyper vigilance that comes with active shiny hunting is now a constant in Scarvi even if I’m not actively hunting and if I am? No method apart from the Masuda method is passive. But if I’m running around on Koraidon I still need to careful I don’t miss a potential shiny that spawns in! Argh!!! And other than raid battles (and I cannot stress enough how much I just really don’t care for that battle format), shiny hunting is the only other thing to do after the postgame! And I’m basically locked out of it for having two medical conditions I didn’t fucking ask for. I’m so… *sad* about this! This isn’t fair! I don’t want my game to be stressful and exhausting. So thank you for addressing this issue in a respectful way because so many fans of ScarVio basically laughed at disabled people like me and calling us pathetic and whiny all because we just want an accessibility option that is already in two previous titles! Or they day: “why would colour blind people want a shiny Pokémon they can’t tell is shiny anyways?” for the same reason you want a shiny Garchomp! To say you have one and to see it sparkle when you go into battle! Disabled people aren’t a different species for you, literally fuck off!
yup yup. i get nausea and headaches from playing more than 10 minutes. i plowed through with shiny hunting but afyer that wave and putting the game down i just... havent picked it back up. it physically hurts to play, ive just been going back the legends were i dont need to squint at the screen
@@RokkTheRock Literally same here! I don’t want to pick the game up again! It HURTS to play! I paid £60 for a game that physically hurts me! There is no reason for me to play this game again, I haven’t picked it up in months! It was fun at first but the novelty really wore off quick and I regret not asking for a refund bc wtf was that? I didn’t even complete the post game because it isn’t interesting enough to make the headaches and nausea worth it. Arceus is WAY more rewarding because of this and way more fun to play, I wish they’d just put their whole team on developing Arceus because it’s a far better game, it introduced so many good quality of life mechanics that TPC then just abandons it all instantly! There‘s literally no reason to not have them either, the code was already there! And like one of my friends this week asked me: “do you want to do a raid to get Walking Wake?” Bc I still haven’t gotten it and I was like “no thanks, I don’t really care” because I don’t! Especially after Tears of the Kingdom came out, it’s embarrassing that, THAT game runs perfectly fine on my switch but Scarvi that looks like cheap plastic garbage in comparison runs at like 10fps and flickers. I think in 60 hours I’ve logged in the new Zelda game that game has maybe lagged like 4 times? And one time was bc my switch was downloading an update in the background. And I don’t even have a new switch! There is literally NO excuse for the game performing so poorly that it puts players in physical pain! And I thought these legendaries were going to have a fun puzzle to solve in the depths of Area Zero and actually like y’know make them ENJOYABLE to get and all it is is stupid fucking raid battle that hurts my head because the battle area is so bright and flickery! And because I can’t play for long I haven’t levelled up my team enough or given them perfect IVs or did EV training, nor have I curated a specific Perfect Pokémon that everyone wants you to have for raids or they hate you bc the raid is impossible without ‘raid cat’ or belly drum Azumarill or something! This isn’t fun! If the very limited time I get to play has to be dedicated to me pouring ALL of my time and effort into raising a Pokémon I’m not interested in then I’m just not going to bother because why would I do that?
Subtle shinies today are just inexcusable. When they were supposedly just palette swaps, I can forgive it. If someone is now consciously going to the Pokémon texture, merely nudging a slider a little to the right, and calling it a day, that's beyond stupid. God knows how many subtle shinies I ran past going from raid crystal to raid crystal.
i personally suffer from carpal tunnel and am slightly red-green colorblind [to name a few things], and as someone who has both violet and legends arceus, i don't understand why people gravitate towards scarlet and violet for shiny hunting older pokemon you could hunt in legends.. i understand that yes, the herba mystica methods are broken and getting it SHOULD be some sort of challenge, but it's.. physically impossible to get it without an online subscription! i've tried local play with my boyfriend, and we both hyper trained with super effective types and even a strong moveset against these pokemon, and even that did *nothing* to help! if your shiny hunting methods aren't able to be done without a literal paywall, it makes no sense to put it in! i have many shinies in legends arceus, one of which is a carnivine which i would've missed were it not for the effects in that game, and seeing the lack of effects severely ruins my enjoyment of the game, especially considering that i can't *play* as long as i would enjoy to (see: aforementioned carpal tunnel issues) due to this! it's entirely ruined my personal enjoyment of the game to the point where i would much rather shiny hunt in legends, even though i was originally a little excited to see the shiny hunting methods in this gen, only to be slapped in the face with.. this. i miss when you could just literally run around with a perfected pokedex page in a mass outbreak and you got your shiny basically scot free, but everyone's moved to shiny hunting in scarlet and violet... and abled people will just harass literally any disabled person even SLIGHTLY criticizing the most optimal/used methods. not everyone has the ability to get the shiny charm and it's frustrating to see basically every abled person online go "well hurr durr it provides a challenge that's fun and the reward is easy if you have herba mystica and a shiny charm" these past few gens have been so hostile to disabled people it isn't even funny anymore.
I just wanted to say, that I've got recommended this video despite really despising overly long multiple hours long essays (with them usually being some dude talking, with barely any edits and a lot of mental gymnastics) and Poketubers. I also have made an attempt of my own to review Scarlet & Violet (now unlisted because it was terrible), because I wanted to bring up things I thought a lot of people reviewing these games were omitting or even ignoring. You sir, are the first essayist of your kind to change up my mind and to not only bring up said points (like with removal of accessibility from PLA, including Pokemon spawning behind walls), but to also to make a much better and tightly edited video than I ever could and seeing as it's over 7 hours long, I can only imagine how much time and effort went into this. I really hope more people will recognize this. Hats off to ya.
@@thevioletbee5879 Sorta' yeah (I liked his Game of Thrones final season stuff despite being a big fan of the series until S5). It just got oversaturated with people like him or Joseph Anderson or 15 hour essays about single most bland Persona 5 character that barely talks about said character or the game. I'd just spend this time playing the game they talk about for hours to come up with my own opinion or at most leave said video in the background while doing grinding somewhere. Here however I can say for certain, watching this video is way better and more entertaining than Scarlet & Violet will ever be, even after patches.
My friend's copy crashed when she was trying to catch a Glimmora. The Switch would not turn back on no matter what she did after that crash. Pokémon Scarlet bricked her switch.
Reading stories like this, I wouldn't be surprised if by Gen 12, the Pokémon games just refuse to boot up, making them unplayable for everyone (I'm tempted to say forever but I know full well they will just make a patch for it)
@@TankEngine75 So basically like a CD game with the slightest little bit of dirt on it ever that makes it so the game is recognized by takes an eternity to load? :P (I MAY have had experience with that. I'm looking at you, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics... '>_>)
I liked the plot twist comparing the game to cyberpunk so much! I literally paused the video to contemplate how good of a transition that was! Subbing for sure 🔥
The best way I can describe how Pokémon S/V (and similar "open world" games that fail at that aspect) feels is visiting a huge theme park that's on the last hours of the last day before it closes down. Most of the attractions have been packed away or shut down, leaving on ly the simplest ones, there is only a skeleton crew of employees who aren't even trying that hard to entertain you, human interactions are few and far between, and all that's left is this enormous empty space between the rides that still work. There are hints at how all that space could have been used and what the rides would look like at full potential, but only a shadow of that is left.
Really like the balancing linear and open world section, the discussion of mechanics in linear and open games and how even the smallest of mechanics matter is really good.
For the Open world aspect, something else they couldve done since apparently pokemon is allergic to level scaling, was have the gym badges tied to the area instead, so instead of the badge number = level, it could be that badges would work for pokemon caught in areas around the gym, since i assume pokemon still keeps track of where you caught a specific pokemon.
There is mild issues with level scaling, Pokemon isn't designed for it. You need a way to downgrade Pokemon otherwise you'll either have level 50+ not evolved Pokemon or you'll have not a sane way to get pre-evolved Pokemon without excessive breeding which obviously waiting isn't fun. Since Gamefreak isn't even willing to have an OPTION for Exp Share or Set Mode anymore expecting them to even try to balance Pokemon and make systems needed to support it without becoming a grind heavy game which most fans wouldn't want is crazy.
@Dragoonsoul7878 I think wild Pokemon shouldn't be level scaled but NPCs should...an option for wild Pokemon scale though is you change the encounter tables based on the Badge number, meaning you'd unlock fully evolved Pokemon after say 8 Badges gotten.
Or hell, make it a "type mastery" matter where if you beat a Titan/Gym/Team star compound specializing in a certain type you gain a permanent advantage with Pokémon of that type. Perhaps better catch rates, shiny spawn rates, egg hatching speedd or improved affection gain, or a stat boost. Plenty of ways they could have implemented that. They coulud even have trainers in the general area that specialize in that type of Pokémon giving you those bonuses little by little as you beat more of them. They have programmed most of those bonuses in via the sandwich system, so it would take little to no effort. Make it so that the Gym leader gives you a badge that's got empty sockets, and the trainers in the area when beat give you tiny shards that fit into that socket and progressively unlock your type mastery bonuses. It's not hard to have ideas like these if you inch a single fucking millimiter outside of the bare minimum to sell the game!
The Pokémon center thing is kind of funny as with the reason given, that would mean that the Pokémon company sees Nintendo themselves as a middle man to cut down since they have their own online storefront to sell products as well.
The worst part about the whole "no voice acting" part is, that Pokémon Masters a darn MOBILE (gacha) game even has voice acting. Sure it is not made by the main company and the voice "acting" is mostly stuff like "mh", "yea" and smaller catch phrases but still.
3 hours and 58 minutes in. Your rewrite of the Pokemon Scarlet plot makes me a bit teary eyed. It was DAMN good. Makes me sad that Game freak won't dedicate themselves to a good Pokemon game ever again. Only broken, half finished games that aim to at least be 'kinda fun.' I loved Pokemon Scarlet when I played it but this video really opened my eyes to how broken it is. Damn, I miss the DS and 3DS era.
A point I would like to see touched upon (not sure if it's still upcoming, just passed the part about the game's and the Pokémon's filesizes) is how they evidently made conscious compromises in order to be able to cheap out on the cartridges, which they did with Legends Arceus as well. This series is printing money like no other, yet Gamefreak/TPC doesn't even deem it worth the cost getting the 16GB cartridges for these games which surely could allow for better quality assets and/or more content. That's how much they're trying to squeeze out every last Cent from it. I'm not saying that's the main reason for the lack of content and quality in the game, but I'd say I'm about 95% sure it would be easier for them to develop a 16GB game than it is an 8GB game.
But have you considered the cost of using a braincell? That's 1% of profits that could go into that 200% increase going to.......paying investors! We can't have that. . . . . . Shareholders and stocks are parasites that weaken an economy.
@@zjzr08 No, SwSh was 13GB because it was programmed badly. Or to be more clear *optimised* badly. It was Gamefreaks first mainline Pokémon Switch game, so it is, of course, way bigger than it needs to be due to poor optimisation. By SV, they had made a handful of games for the Switch and finally knew how to cut down on file size just enough to be playable without being too big so they could cheap out on those cartridges. And idk what you mean by "They did have 16GB cartridges" they don't hoard the blank carts until they need to be printed; the carts are made to order.
@@misspoppyp Did you read what I just wrote that they were programmer badly? Game Freak made Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee before Sword & Shield, and was only 4.2 GB. I will say that was made by their B-Team, which I notice had been a lot more efficient than the A-Team (albeit fewer resources). And obviously the catridges were made to order, just saying the excuse that they we're trying to meet a quota to fit the games into a cheaper 8 GB cartridge doesn't make sense when they SwSh likely used the 16 GB cartridges on them. In terms of optimization they could've just asked helped from Nintendo or other development teams who has experience in these things (remember Genius Sonority who made the Gamecube Pokemon games?) like other teams did for their games (I remembered Smash Ultimate and BoTW had significant help from Bandai Namco and Monolith Soft respectively).
@@zjzr08 (Sorry I read your comment wrong lol I had just woken up) How could they possibly ask for help when optimising the game? That could take weeks, if not months ! They have to ship it out by the holidays to meet their yearly quota of at least 3 pokémon games ! If they don't, then their money printing factory might stop working as efficiently and they'd have to go from being multibillionares to just *normal* billionares. 😥
Great video essay as always, honestly amazed you got it done in the amount of time you did considering your streams and college. Also the realization that Let's Go was the best polished mainline Pokemon game is just sad to think about.
The different pre-order bonuses from every single retailer is a Japanese cultural practice, with many light novel series having different bonus chapters for each retailer you purchase them from. In these instances, you need to purchase every single version of the novel to read the whole story…
Pokémon released a demo for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire way before the full game dropped, that gave you a few quests and even let you catch a Glalie that could be transferred to the full game. It actually showed off the art style and graphics and gameplay changes to the point that people could decide whether they wanted the full game or not. We need this again for the gen 5 remakes and EVERY GAME MOVING FORWARD
ORAS were the last good GameFreak games and I'll stand by that forever now. Everything GameFreak will put out in the future will be inferior to 90's games unironically.
@@christianmckee2116 I'd argue the last good games were Sun and Moon. I enjoyed Sun enough that I completed the Pokedex. Never played USUM but I heard they ruined more than they improved.
@@Flower_Mom I'm glad you enjoyed SM. I personally could not stand them. The more I think about them and the missteps they make, the more I dislike them. As for USUM, their existence retroactively made SM worse in a way. They had all the features from SM and more, but still failed to fix their bigger issues. If USUM existed as base SM to begin with, most of my problems with them would still exist, but at least I wouldn't feel scammed by them. I say ORAS are the last good Pokemon games made by GameFreak because they didn't pull the same stunts like SM and USUM did. They focused on being polished fun Pokemon adventures first over doing anything gimmicky. ORAS was also the last time many features Pokemon became known for were there like the National Pokedex.
I wish more people subbed to you because these video essays are always well thought out and thorough. I never feel like you missed a point (kind of hard when these are literally the time of several movies) and each point is always given it’s fair shot. We need more of this content on UA-cam, not less.
GOD the rewrite is amazing!!! i can’t believe you took this absolutely bogus story and turned it into something genuinely touching. i almost started to tear up at the line “you lost her a long time ago.” i haven’t even played this game and don’t know the characters, but your short synopsis of an alternate version of the story made me feel for them !! this is SO GOOD AAAAA and makes me mad that the writers and devs didn’t have the time to make anything near this quality
this would require some adjustment for pokémon violet, though, but you could easily swap out “lost in the past” for “too focused on the future to see the present,” since going back to the past is technically an attempt at ensuring a brighter future. time travel is wacky to discuss but i hope this makes sense lol
@@plushdragonteddy Yeah I didn't give a whole lot of thought to how it might work the other way around, I just kinda figured in the back of my head it wouldn't be the first time Pokemon didn't make sense in one specific version lul What comes to mind is my favorite mainline games, Black and White. You have the dragons of Truth and Ideals. N is pursuing his ideals, but then you show him the truth, and he realizes the error of his ways. Seems kinda strange when he has the truth dragon and you have the ideals dragon, haha
@AcousticHarmonia I think it still works in the opposite way! N fights for the truth that pokemon and humans inevitably hurt one another, you fight for the ideal of a good world in spite of that
The work that players have done in modding SV demonstrates a depressing reality about these games: their supporters are right. Behind all the poor performance, there IS a fun game. Fans have fixed it and revealed the gem hidden behind the bugs. And its depressing that Game Freak can't, or won't, do the same.
Legitimately dude, you're one of the best and most comprehensive game reviewers I've ever seen. You review fairly and have an unbelievable eye for detail, catching things that I never consciously noticed and that ive5never heard mentioned by any other reviewer. A good use of 7 hours, absolutely well done
I am genuinly upset that legends arcues was over shadowed by scarlet and voilet, they just glossed over it. Legends arcues is still considered a mainline game too, according to their sales, so they just barely gave it any attention before forcing out the next one. Legends was also the first switch pokemon game i truly enjoyed, i didnt mind swsh, lets go was fine and i havent even bothered with scarlet and voilet, but legends felt different and i really wish they gave it more attention or maybe even just a dlc. Its really dissappointing to see game freak ignore their own ip just becuase of their need to force a new generation out each year. I love the series and have since i was a kid, but i cant enjoy the newer games nor am i motivated to buy and play them as soon as possible anymore.
I like the new ideas for the battle system in legends, but the whole rest of the game seems so freaking boring and tedious from what I've heard from everyone who talks about it. Just catching pokemon over and over and over again, sometimes the same ones in a row, filling out a checklist. Sounds awful to me. Which sucks, because Sinnih is my favorite region.
I was super depressed when they showed brilliant diamond and shining pearl. Oh my God I was waiting for over a decade for my favorite Gen to get the remake treatment and I got that.
@@Alex_Barbosa tbh I enjoyed the system, I get that it does end up being repetitive, but it's not all bad. I totally get wanted more out of it though. I still think sinnoh deserved better remakes, and even though I love legends, it's more of a side game than a remake even if nintendo still considers it mainline.
@@Alex_Barbosa you're totally right, gen 4 was the first games I ever played and bdsp was such a let down. Even if you look past its lackluster graphics, the game play somehow manages to be boring, despite being the exact same. Plus they completely ignored platinum, even the other remakes at least nodded to their third games. Bdsp was such a waste of a sinnoh remake it makes me dread what they'll do to any other game that gets a remake after this, I still much prefer going back and playing platinum over bdsp and haven't touched it since finishing the story
I have to highly disagree. Legends, to me, was a giant tech demo. It barely had any content outside of being a pokemon catching simulator they slapped on those stupid dex requirements because they needed the illusion of things to do.
Be grateful you went to did the gyms first, because putting them off like I did is much worse than just not being able to catch high level pokémon. I leveled my team from the bottom, so I never worried about level requirements. Little did I know that the game secretly keeps much more than shop items from you if you forego the gym badges. I couldn't do raid battles above 2 stars, I could never learn new sandwich recipes, I couldn't try out the auction house, I couldn't even attend classes, and my experience gain was cut to 1/4th throughout the whole playthrough, just to name a few things! And to add on to that, this game offers no in-universe incentive to actually bother fighting gym leaders. They'll never be the strongest trainers you can fight, and I honestly felt petty challenging their pitiful teams with the same party I already defeated the much stronger Arven with. I wanted to help save a dog's life, and uncover the Starfall conspiracy, but after doing that what possible purpose is there to clowning on some pompous losers for their badges? Nemona's encouragement honestly made me dislike her. I wound up quitting the game after just a few gyms. Good thing no "open-world" game in the world would force you to do every single questline before unlocking the endgame, right?
I did the same I liked that part about it this game was truly open world. The bad part comes in with every switch title where they are sooooooo easy. If it was harder to level up there would be more incentive to fight the gyms to level up. But nope your level 60 by the time your on the 4th gym 🤣
I get the complaints about the Gym Leaders, but like, the Starfall Conspiracy is kinda bland and IMO did better with Team Skull (which had a better, albeit predictable, conspiracy with Aether Foundation), with repeated tropes and dialogue each time you go to a different base, from what I saw.
@@zjzr08 I'm not really sure what you mean. I can't speak for Ultra, but playing Moon I didn't get any motivation from Team Skull, and Aether was just as shallow and pointless as Team Plasma. I'm not saying Star was fantastic, but it actually had a story.
@@Fungo4 The motivation of Team Skull was they were a group of trainers who failed the Island Trials and that feeling of rejection bonded them with Guzma who I think quit as a Trial Captain...then Aether Foundation took advantage of them so they can operate ilicit activity without people noticing.
Why does every game need crafting? You mentioned open worlds as a massive new trend, and I'm noticing this is one as well. Story of Seasons Pioneers of Olive Town got screwed over because they insisted on crafting and having makers to immitate Stardew Valley with its processing machines. Crafting was also the hot new thing in Animal Crossing New Horizons. I'm sure it's in more games too, but I'm just a "philty casual". IMO the only game out of these where it isn't tedious to collect materials is Stardew, but I guess devs have decided crafting is the new thing and they need to implement it, no matter how poorly.
@Phantom StarsX Pokeblocks could be kinda counted as crafting too, right? Also exchanging shards for items or TMs is mechanically like crafting (a combination of items exchanged for 1), just presented in a sales kinda way.
I don’t think they need them, but when handled well, they drastically help. Breath of the Wild was fine, but the 50 billion resources that served basically no purpose left exploration with very little motivation. While Tears of the Kingdom’s incredibly simple and intuitive crafting system alone makes it almost 10x better.
I agree that Pokémon probably doesn’t need a crafting system. In a game like legends Arceus I think it makes more sense. The closest will ever get to a functioning crafting system Pokémon are the apricorns in HGSS
@@andrewwallach1385 how many items in the Pokémon games are you actually able to use in the overworld? At least in legends Arceus you craft to get Poké balls or potions which you could just buy the Pokémart in scarlet and violet
It's a crying shame that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet released in the state they did. Unlike Sword and Shield, which was a soulless cash grab meant to fill a quota for a new Pokemon game from its inception, you can tell the developers actually really wanted to make Scarlet and Violet. The game is just oozing with passion that wasn't there in Sword and Shield. If the devs had been given another two or three years to fix the bugs and fill out the barren open world a bit more, we could've had something truly special.
I love the idea that people call the world barren when its full of pokemon and then will suck off breath of the wild that had literal giant swaths of land with nothing there except maybe a korok (which was just area filler)
@@billybobbobson3797 I love the idea that people shill for a corporation that makes billions of dollars releasing poor quality games because their identity is just being a consumer of media.
it was weak too, passion isn't really there they just divided the design in 3 and somehow has less in it, no side quests still and terrible raid formats
@@billybobbobson3797 It shouldn't have only mostly Pokemon, that's the issue. We only have like 10 cities when even older games had like close to 20. I do agree the items scattered may had been fine but I do think adding subareas would help a lot. There were only few caves that are expansive because there's no subareas. There's no buildings you can go inside and check on people for items, featrues or battles too.
@@RapidAssaultEuro this is straight up nonsense. I can both appreciate the game and see flaws. You people will never be pleased because your entire identity is summarized in a youtibe video. You are all bots with no personal thought just regurgitating whatever youtubers say. And anyone who isn't in lock step with you us labeled a shill.
Amazing vid. The story re-write was my favorite part. While I do like Scarlet more than Violet, I think the story is easily adaptable to Violet by changing Turo's obsession from changing the past and saving his wife, to being him looking to the future to find solutions so people don't have to feel his pain, or something along those lines, maybe something more self-obsessed.
I bought Violet, played about 2 weeks, stopped for about 6 months, finally came back and beat the game and completed the living dex. I don't plan to come back until the dlc. All I know is I won't be pre-ordering or buying the next pokemon game until I see extensive reviews and gameplay. S&V, like you said, could've used years more of development. I thought Sw&Sh were jokes of games and then S&V came out lol
2:07:40 Jacq says that he designed the Pokédex app for your Rotom phone when you talk to him, actually! Not nearly as cool as it being a literal bookshelf, but there is an explanation :)
Asking which Gym leader you had the most trouble with would have been an amazingly sneaky play if the Champion's Ace was one of her more powerful mons, and it's Tera type was determined by your answer. "Oh, you struggle against electric pokemon? Good to know..."
X and Y felt unfinished Sun and Moon were padded to feel less unfinished Sword and Shield are unfinished Scarlet and Violet are blatantly unfinished. I say this as someone who does overall like S/M and S/V (not X/Y as much, and I hate Sw/Sh) but... Seriously, how far can this keep going? That's a scary thought... God I miss the DS era...
Same here mate, love SM/USUM, I don't deny the bad parts (they sold us the same game but with DLC). I honestly thought that nothing could top SwSh when it comes to bad quality, boy is SV talented in that regard...
And on that note, Diamond/Pearl (the original DS ones) were also kinda unfinished, we just remember them fondly either thanks to Nostalgia, Platinum, or both.
I got an hour and a half through this before realising it was 7 hours long! Huge props to you for making such a large video in such high quality! I'm loving watching your video essays and seeing the different analyses and critiques.
Watched the whole thing and it's further cemented how glad I am I've been able to leave this series behind. Sword was the last Pokemon game I played, and that was from me giving it a chance from several people close to me saying "It's good actually". It wasn't, even with the overpriced DLC "totally making it worth it, just trust me bro, it gets better when you drop another $30". Folks are now telling me the exact same thing about Scarlet and Violet and I'm amazed they can do it with a straight face when these things make SwSh look finished.
Same man same. It still makes me sad, but you gotta know when to let go. I've been playing alot of fan games recently though. They help scratch that itch.
Dude, SWSH WERE finished by comparison. I never encountered any of the bugs in Sw that I did in V. The FPS wasn't bad unless you were in a Wild Area in online multiplayer. How did they fuck this up?
I'll never forget preordering a second copy of Violet for my friend's birthday (because they specifically ASKED me to) and then them seeming embarrassed when I gave it to them because by that point, a lot of the other people there, even people who knew very little about pokemon, knew how badly the games had released based on all the negative reviews going round. It's pretty appalling when someone else's mid-fifties parents know a video game is bad when they don't even know what a "Charlizard guy" is. They told me later that they enjoyed the game for what it was but I felt very guilty getting them the "worst" present in the group at the time. As for my own experience with the game, the music is an obvious highlight. It can be frustrating seeing some people crediting everything to Toby Fox when the other composers did amazing (special shout out to Teruo Taniguchi for making the Team Star music even though it was his first time doing a significant theme for the mainline games) but at least the OST for pokemon is getting more and more recognition. I only wish the area themes were a bit more diverse. Having only 4 area themes with a couple of differences in unique areas like Asado Desert just wasn't enough for me. Even the town themes used similar motifs (except Cascaraffa and Levincia, those themes slapped hard). At least the themes are very dynamic, having more intense versions for battle or riding, which really helps the whole open world feel, but I wish they at least had a few more unique dungeon themes. Even reusing some themes like Inlet Grotto (very underrated theme btw) for some of the existing caves like the one in Glasadeo Mountain would have been a big improvement. Honestly I wish they added something like the music player in Mario Odyssey that you could unlock in the postgame, it would've made shiny hunting a lot less tedious to have other music options and adding some headphones wouldn't break the immersion much. I feel the story has pretty strong moments too. It's a pokemon game, I've come to expect relatively lack lustre plots with lots of conveniences and holes, but this is probably the second best plot in the series. I'm not expecting Mystery Dungeon or Xenoblade levels of storytelling here (although I would love that). For what it is, I'm glad the characters were charming and more believable than a lot of previous entries. However, I think a lot of the gym leaders were a step down. They had interesting personality and amazing character design, but they didn't feel very integrated with the world. You would be told they did this and that, Iono is a streamer, Cofu is a chef, but you never really see them doing that except maybe once. Once you beat them, you never really interact again apart from the rematches and academy tournament. Sure it's about the same level of development as most games, but I miss when at least a couple of gym leaders had some plot relevance, like the gym leaders helping fight team plasma in black and white, or something as minimal as Raihan giving some lore exposition in sword and shield. I guess it's because they separated out the 3 different storylines, but what if you had to help Iono fight off some clingy team star fans, or you had a chance of Larry showing up in the Medali restaurant each time you ate there and would occasionally let you challenge him to a battle. I don't know, just a bit more. At least most of them are memorable. As for the gameplay... sigh. It's everyone's argument and biggest negative, but the extent of the glitches is objectively inexcusable for the "highest grossing media franchise in the world". I personally didn't encounter many glitches, probably because I never tried anything crazy, but the lag spikes were awful to deal with. My biggest complaint though is the way pokemon models were handled. It's really picky, but I hated how the pokemon models would be super low poly for the first few seconds of battle before the full render loaded in. I couldn't stop noticing it and it really detracted from the minimal immersion of the game. Having such glaring flaws that even a really casual player who just wants to have fun running around the world gets bothered by is too much. I'm glad everyone seems to agree with this. To dump some of my other complaints here: I miss customisation, I miss having extra facilities like poke star studios or even poke pelago to mess around with, I miss intricate dungeon sections like chargestone cave, victory road or even something as basic as vast poni canyon, I miss being able to pet the pokemon, I miss being able to improve pokemon's friendship without sitting through a 5 minute physics demonstration just to make a sandwich, I miss hte dynamic development of Jubilife Village which was a huge thing I enjoyed in Legends Arceus, I miss the pokemon having reasonable balancing instead of having incredibly broken pokemon like Skeledirge against underwhelming ones like Grafaia and I miss having places where you could find out more lore about the region (eg. Celestic town in DPPt or the Burned Tower in GSC/HGSS) rather than having it dumped in the history lessons and a few characters' dialogue because SV's map is so empty without it. Most of all though, I HATE that the gyms don't have level scaling. They demonstrated it is possible in universe with that one pokemon origins episode over 5 years ago now. I don't mind the overworld being scaled the way it is, just please scale the gym leaders so the ace is one level above yours and the rest of the party are 3 or so levels below that, please. As for things I do genuinely like: I like the academy (at least, I like being able to form bonds with the teachers and be rewarded for learning more. I just wish the lessons themselves were more interesting), I like the pokemon walking around the world and sometimes interacting with it, I like the photos the pokemon get in the dex, I like how you have the freedom to explore areas with pokemon that are higher level than your team, I adore the otherworldly aesthetic of Area Zero (I have an unhealthy obsession with fantasy/theoretical world geographies, like floating islands and crystal caves etc., one of the reasons why I love pokemon mystery dungeon), I like a lot of the new pokemon (Ceruledge, Annihilape, Tinkaton, Orthworm, Lokix...) and I liked the direction they took the team star story (although I wish they made the plot easier to follow so less people would misinterpret it). On that last point, I think it is better that evil teams are actually pursuing a goal they truly believe in that happens to conflict with the goals of the protagonist rather than something as unhinged as world destruction, it makes them a more believable antagonist (N took a similar line of development. I think N is better as a character, but I like both for this reason). The conclusion, as most people have agreed, is the games had potential. This potential was tragically wasted, and the some of the employees deserve better for the efforts they have put in than this disaster of a game that came about mainly because of the higher up's concern for profit.
I don’t know why I read the entire thing but this is surprisingly how I felt playing this game for 4 months straight and really reevaluating the 400 hours I dumped into this game. It could’ve been so much better and I hate the fact that a game I actually was looking forward to where I pretty much dumped $120 without question ended up being my worst purchasing decision ever( and I wasted $1200 on Pokémon cards for crying out loud and I still consider those better purchases than this garbage). This was my breaking point for the only franchise I knew in full for 13 straight years and I currently just play other game franchises I can get my hands on, most notably being sonic frontiers Mario rabbids sparks of hope, and digimon cyber sleuth and potentially more in the future if Pokémon games continue to be like this. These games while not perfect we’re far better experiences than S/V by a long shot and while Sword and shield were hard carried by dlc, at least me and my friends had fun with those games even after legend arceus came out and with our disappointment with Gen 4 remakes (where all of us started Pokémon on Gen 4 so we knew this game front and back without playing the game) we just kept playing just that game and smash bros ultimate and we had good memories from those 2 games alone despite the newer Pokémon games that came out after( Pokémon unite was a temporary exception but we didn’t like it after a while since it was pay to win at its core). I am now temporarily separated from my friends due to different career paths and I am glad they were spared from this launch garbage even though this would’ve been the perfect game for all of us to play together in different parts of the world and I recommend to them to just save their money due to even my optimistic self at the start knew this game was gonna be a hot mess for awhile even though I did enjoy it for a time after I got my day 1 games. Sorry for my long rant I am just saying that this long comment that took 5 minutes to read really stood out to what I deeply feel for a franchise I invested in since I was 7 years old( 20 now going to 21 in the coming months) and now really being awoken to how awful these games have become. I even went as far as wasting loads of money buying older Pokémon games just to see if it’s not just my nostalgia doing me dirty but nope older 2d games were better overall than 3d games despite all of their ups and downs. Oh how things change for the worse I guess…
@@gmk9321 Ouch, $200 on SV? It’s kind of frightening how much money pokemon has made on a complete disaster game. But on the note of other games, I have to say I keep going back to other games I love on the switch like animal crossing, splatoon, kirby, replaying breath of the wild in preparation for tears of the kingdom (which I’ve since started), some gorgeous indi games I got for less than the total of SV’s budget including Soundfall and The Liar Princess And The Blind Prince (I’ve even gone back to the untitled Goose Game since the release of SV because my friend wanted to try out the multiplayer). I even replayed one of the pokemon mystery dungeon games on the DS (the 3D graphics in them are controversial, but honestly the environment graphics are 1000x better, even before the release of XY for the first of the two 3D titles). Point being, like you said, none of them are perfect games, but I’ve had a lot more lasting fun with them than SV. Animal Crossing New Horizons I have over 700 hours in alone and still want to go back to complete a new area I was developing on my island. Breath of the Wild I went back to years after release because of the sequel hype, I can’t see myself doing that for SV. I didn’t even replay SwSh before SV. Instead, I was 100%ing Kirby and the Forgotten Land to complete the minifigures collection. Honestly, there’s such a lack of content in SV that for once watching playthroughs, especially challenge runs, of the game was much more fun than actually playing the game, because it skips all the grinding (eg. Tera raids for herba mystica) and the pointless exploration of areas where there’s nothing to actually find. I’ve already made up my mind to save up for the Xenoblade 3 dlc (which looks really good, but I prioritised tears of the kingdom) instead of buying the SV dlc because I’m not confident they will be much good, I can always watch someone play through or watch a lore review video if I feel like it
@@colour_fall14 yeah agreed and I spent around $200 because I got the dlc in the vaugue hope that like sword and shield it fixes the game to a somewhat enjoyable experience but given the recent game breaking bugs for something as simple as just releasing different Tera raids I have very low expectations for this being more than just a cash grab
@@colour_fall14 good to see I am not alone in this predicament considering the die hard fans defending this game to the point where I think they are a part the reason why these games suck and in spite of it sell so well
Yeah, that's a good point you've got right there. (human) Pokemon characters are a core part of the games for me, though they're always overshadowed by the pokemon themselves (fair enough). But I wish you could still interact with them from time to time in the games. The closest thing was the Battle Chateau in XY where you could directly go talk to gym leaders, elite four members, and the champion herself, in order to initiate a "rematch". Others could include B2W2's PWT or SM/USUM's Battle Tree; however, these were formal tournaments where you couldn't walk and choose your opponent by yourself. However, given how modern characters have a side job apart from formal battling, it would be nice to see them in such jobs, or any other thing they like (kinda like Nanu or Olivia when you go to a restaurant in USUM) just as you're saying. Like, actually knowing certain character is in a certain place (like the Larry example you said) and depending on the day or time of the day, they do different things, like battling you, telling you an interesting fact of their pokemon, or just plain telling how they feel. And, though in-world character immersion has always existed in the games, it still feels like could push it more. And don't get me started on character lore. I adore when non-main characters have some story apart from their backstory. And this is enhanced whenever characters appear in different entries throughout the series. Unfortunately, no returning characters were featured in neither SwSh and SV. Even for plot important characters: what happened to N after B2W2's events? There's so much potential in the franchise's human characters that it's yet to be explored. It would contribute greatly to the worldbuilding.
I think the excuse they gave is that they thought they meant “randomized nuzlocke” but that might be just an excuse they made up, we’ll never know for sure
corporate jap company mindset. and general sentiments of jap culture "if you alter the creation, you are disrespecting the original artist" -> nuzlocks where not an intended gameplay feature-> you are altering the way the game was ment to be played-> you are disrespecting the artist "isnt the game good enough for you?!". rom hacks and hacks follow the same thouhgt pattern
55:25 You can run from trainer battles in Pokemon SV. You still have to pay the other trainer because you essentially lost, but your party won't get wiped this way.
Open world did not become a trend after Breath of the Wild. Nintendo was the last to jump on the bandwagon when the rest of the industry had been doing it for nearly a decade. Alo, BotW wasn't the game that got Nintendo to jump on the bandwagon; that was Xenoblade Chronicles X.
Absolute banger video. In all my whining I never even noticed half the stuff you did - like that the Professor on the TV screen is just a static image, that's got to be my favorite detail now lmao
What always irked me about a lot of Pokemon games (especially SV) is the lack of things to do post story. And I'm not talking about doing the mini quests that take place after the credits. Once you're done catching all the legendaries and so on, the game expects you to create "your own fun" which is pretty much limited to shiny hunting (which is tedious and mostly a waste of time), training mons for competitive (also tedious and not that rewarding if you don't enjoy the online competitive scene), challenge the battle tower (non-existent in SV), or challenge Tera Raids (which rely heavily on broken RNG even with skilled mons and teammates). I wish they'd bring back more options for reasons to train your Pokemon like the Pokeathlon or contests, have something that you can customize like a secret base or Join Avenue (ffs players get their own dorm room and can't do squat with it), or have endless missions and quests to complete that require you to improve your skills like in Mystery Dungeon. Honestly anything better than the bare bones gameplay that we got.
Masuda has stated that the reason Pokémon has removed the battle frontier had been because kids have been so focused on smart phone games that they can’t be focused on completing a Pokémon game and so because of it and implement so many post game features they probably wouldn’t be interested in seeing anyway. Pretty obviously the visionary who’s running this franchise into the ground
I'm surprised someone who is such a patrician with this level of knowledge and appreciation of video games actually still plays these garbage games AND took on the effort of producing a video like this. Pokemon doesn't deserve such scrutiny, it doesn't deserve us, really, but I share your pain in seeing what it has become over the years, and frustration in how easily everyone lets them get away with it. Thanks for the video.
Difficulty modes are a good call, if done right, but gemefreak seems insistent on leaving out difficulty modes or any player options at all, just look at how they removed the option to turn off the exp share (which i would argue scarlet and violet is balanced around the exp share better than sword and shield was) and recently they removed set mode so you have to know what the opponent's pokemon is
Difficulty modes are the reason I play fan games… and then regret it because Jesus Christ giving max EVs to Pokémon Reborn’s bosses was the biggest mistake of my life.
@@thevioletbee5879 as long as they are done right, like sure the fact they existed in b2w2 was interesting, but the way you unlocked them and the fact that the "easier" mode was a version exclusive was dumb, because what is the point in it after unlocking it at the end of the story? And hard mode is also pretty bad when you consider how levels work in gen 5, meaning you'll be over leveled for a bit before becoming under leveled again because the amount of exp you gain from higher level enemies is higher, while lower level ones give half or less so sometimes battles will be very easy, while other battles are extremely hard depending on your level at that time, but in the end, there have been games that did an even poorer job at making difficulty, oftentimes by turning enemies into damage sponges and making them kill you in a couple hits, or take forever to kill you, both extremes being very bad
@@thevioletbee5879 in addition, force the player to go in with a certain number of Pokemon to match the gym leader's so you have to choose strategy over numbers
My most important things about videos like these are to see how the person fixes and changes the story, and i LOVE how you did your story, I'll surely be ignoring canon and pretending your rewrite is canon from now on
When it was first revealed what the general premise of the game was, I saw a meme somebody made shortly after that showed the robot and caveman posing from that spongebob episode with the song and it had the caption "Pokemon Scarlet/Violet 2022" and before the game was even out I was like "I know what I must do..."
Pokemon is the one instance where the target audience doesn't care about game quality for price and where the majority of sales occur without waiting for reviews. Pokemon just came out? Buy it! - oh its shit... too bad, already bought it.
The crazy thing is is that the footage leaked for GTA 6 looks far better than anything Pokémon has released as a finished product in the last four years. But the fan reaction couldn’t be more different. The GTA community was disappointed because they have high hopes for Rockstar despite the game having been leaked and likely won’t be available for another several years but the fans were disappointed because they hold Rockstar to high standards. The Pokemon community being ok with the stuff Gamefreak has been pushing out for the last few years shows either how low expectations they have for Gamefreak or how much cope they’re willing to swallow to justify it being a good game
An important detail that was missed is the books on the Area Zero stations. The books talk about the professors obsession with the scarlet book, how the professor eventually got divorced with the other professor, and that a big motivator for the Time Machine and their “paradise” was so that they can live as a family again. It’s so fucking easy to miss because there’s so little world building and interactable a in this game, but it does somewhat help to understand their “motive”
I wish people didn’t get so upset when you tell them you enjoyed playing the game. You can still think it’s fun while also wanting more quality at the same time and I feel like people don’t realize that
i hope to god this actually teaches TPC to fucking listen to fans and take a few more years between games. we can fucking wait for pokemon media, whats important is the staff is treated humanely and the game is actually functional. it pisses me off seeing so many poketubers excusing the state of the game and not even trying to address this massive, horrendous problem within TPC and the video game/entertainment industry as a whole. thank you for this video!
this is a hot and absolutely fucking stupid take. Everyone in the pokemon community is aware and has pointed out the flaws with the game. It can both be flawed and fun. Everyone under the sun does not need to focus fully on the technical shit. Even Austin John pointed out the technical problesm multiple times. But he had fun playing the game so people like you will call him a mindless shill for not mindless dick riding your opinion.
Jesus Christ. I'm 2h30m in only and I feel like I have so much to comment and agree on but I don't know if I should because there's still 4 more hours to watch and I'm sure that things will be commented on. I absolutely agree on everything so far and it's really sad to see the small guy showing ambition and teaching the world what passionate game design could be turn into the bad guy that does everything for an extra buck and is inconsistent in just about every aspect except underdelivering. For as much code and animation recycling they do, there's no revisiting so much side/extra content they had and extra battle modes. The simple excel sheets they'd have to make for level scaling to be feasible. The lack of a dedicated stat/move balancing team. The lack of even post game content doing double, triple, rotation or any other kind of battle. There's just so much to talk about that they're not doing and they absolutely should. I think what screams to me the most is that up to gen 5 pokémon games were building blocks. The next game would have everything the past games had and more. And even a remake could be justified because gen 1 and 2 were glitchy and messy and underfunded and deserved better. But after the jump to 3D there was a clear shift in mentality that "the next thing needs to be recognizable as its own thing even if it means worse" So it becomes "That game where they have temporary evolutions, that game with finishing moves, that game with giants, that game with sparkly crystals". No idea is revisted and no idea is perfected. And what is revisited isn't made better, it has it's name changed and reapropriated like a new invention. Like when Amie became Refresh. I've often lost faith in this absolutely bonkers huge community whenever I'd engage in any commentary on youtube, reddit or facebook. I just don't understand what people want out of these games anymore. There's no interest in the gameplay, in keeping the old designs, in the quaility of the new designs, in the smoothness or look of the gameplay. I just don't know how people can justify their mental gymnastics about their disposable income and turning off your brain. There's also so much to talk about the art of it that people will lose their minds on because of the subjectivity of it all; but for sure SV underdelivers in being a Spain inspired game. And people will complain that that itself is already wrong and it's Iberic and not Spanish, but that is hard to take seriously when all of portugal was reduced to no npcs and MAYBE two cities, which is abismal if the micro-state of New York can be an entire region of its own. On top of that people latch onto the opinions of "poketubers" to justify things like they speak design facts and are not just people with access to google. The entirety of the dex has like, maybe 3 pokémon that are fully spanish in nature, with the rest being generic european animals/flora or at some points chinese(???). None of the starters stick with the theme of spain even if you stretch it to its most unbeliavably thing (which is something that, as much as Galar did bad, is something they kinda pulled off). I understand japanese devs flooding a game with japanese cultural zeitgeist, but at some points it gets unbelievable. Pokémon like Tandemaus are some of my least favorite designs to date, not only generic and uninspired but multiple separate entities on their own together as one single thing, not even a form change, that evolve by breeding just cause so much narrative dissonance that it makes my head spin. Also, a Pokémon like Cyclizar was made to be some undispensable must-have of the region and no main trainer actually uses one on their team. Not one, not a rival, not faculty, not the normal or dragon specialists, not the professors. It honestly should have been Arven's ace instead of Mabostiff, I'm sorry it's so much more thematically sensible if he's the son of the past and future professors with the past and future lizards. Trainer and team composition are also thematically attrocious. ie: Brassius having an Arboliva instead of a Brambleghast as an ace. The man is a scary man that walks around with a thorn whip and is supposedly an artist doesn't have the scary thorny sculture like Pokémon. Kofu having a Veluza instead of a Dondozo and a Tatsugiri. The sushi chef fisherman not having the sushi related pokémon. (Also a sushi chef... in a city that is meant to represent portugal. A place known for fishing and cooking Cod). Iono and Bellibolt being coupled, being that not only Sandy Shocks exists and could have just been a convergent Magneton that matches nice with her hair accessories; Pawmot is EXACTLY what Iono is. A cute little thing that is popular inside a coat too big for them. This also goes on with the theme of time travel and type changing. There are so many extinct pokémon that could come back for area zero but don't. There's no introduction of new fossils. No fossils in the wild. The things that travel from the future have no reference to actually pokémon known to be manmade or cloned, or hiding in manmade things. Tera-typing was also an excellent opportunity to introduce a myriad of exotic type combinations and new evolutions only attainable to 1/18 of the species, which would make trainers like Penny with a dragon-type eeveelution an effectively better and more memorable trainer fight.
(Around 2:45:00, regarding why Penny doesn't ask a stronger trainer to take out Team Star). There's actually a serviceable assumption you can make about this. Penny just arrived from Galar. Even if she knew some students established as strong, she doesn't know anyone's current skill level, or even if they really care about Team Star (Arvin and Nemona try to pull the player away for their own sidequests, so clearly they don't see TS as that much of an issue). When you run up to her in the beginning and take out the grunts, it's not a stretch to assume that you were one of the first students she saw battling on her return trip. And, since she used illegal LP as a reward, it makes sense for her to want to involve as few people in her operation as possible. So, the player character to her is someone who is willing to take on Team Star and has enough skill to at least battle some grunts. It makes sense for the player to be one of the, if not the first trainer she asks.
I hate that the description I've given to the past 4 Pokemon games (2 entire generations) has been "A good generation trapped in the body of a bad game." I genuinely have fun with the new additions to each generation, but really it feels like the games themselves are trying their hardest to be as unplayable as possible.
The worst part is Game Freak will NEVER do things like turnng the series into 2DHD or optimizing its assets for smoother gameplay because it would be like admitting they made those mistakes in the previous generations. Let's get ready in 1-2 years for the announcement of gen 10 games with even uglier models, clunkier gameplay and scummier pricing models hidden behind some grandeur bullshit.
@@MustacheDLuffy I'm no stranger to "good idea, bad execution". It just sucks that it's happening to Pokemon consistently. It's not like XY where it was followed up with a banger. It's been time after time and I'm growing weary of it.
Open world shouldn't be only the exploration is open but also the challenges, so I think having Gym Leaders be open is fine, as long as their teams are based on your Badge, so you can choose any gym you want in any order.
@@zjzr08 However, that will not work in the Jouto games because of the two gym leaders Akane and Ibuki where they do not give you a badge until later after beating them.
I do think this feature can be programmed well but if you were to do that which this game did you would have to make it a little more obvious which direction has which gyms
@@MustacheDLuffy In RG, GSC, and DPPt, you are able to see the Gym Leader's faces in a set order that you would know who to face. You may find them in the manuals too.
I don't understand why they didn't added The Balearic Islands, Azores, Canary Islands, Catalonia, Andorra Ceuta and Melilla, they added Spain, Gibraltar and Portugal but not these places, I never understood why CATALONIA home to the world famous Barcelona, a city in Spain that the average Joe knows (other then Madrid) is not even in Scarlet and Violet (what I mean is that they didn't even add a Catalonia-inspired area), if I was Spanish, I would be extremely disappointed
I love your story rewrite. I would like to say the same basic template and series of events can be applied to the other side of the coin for Violet: fear of the future. Turo fears losing anyone else in his life and wishes to create the time machine in order to access the wondrous technology of the future - technology he couldn't develop himself within 100 lifetimes - to keep everything he holds dear around forever. Characters basing their outlooks on fear of the future would result in essentially the same motivations as the rewritten characters embroiled in regret of the past - in that sense, your story is very universal and well thought out. I just want you to know I really appreciate your talent and love to watch these videos.
Money's a little tight right now so it's not much but I wanted to show my appreciation! I always recommend new essays from you to my friends. You're well-spoken and very entertaining and listening to this one's keeping me from getting bored on the Final Fantasy XIV grind!
That super kind of you! ♥ I always say though that it already means a lot tuning into stuff I've made, since that's time that could be used on literally anything else at that moment, so that's already more than enough and there shouldn't ever be any obligation for tipping. But I do greatly appreciate it! I'm glad you feel that way and appreciate the kind words, and that I can help manage getting through the grind, haha
Also one of the best things I remember of Legends: Arceus is how Jubilife slowly changes to reflect your progress. When you start out, it's a village where people are afraid of Pokémon, see them as dangerous monsters, and treat anyone who uses them with suspicion and prejudice. But then as you complete missions but mostly side quests, the village fills up with Pokémon and the villagers start living alongside them. Like the guy who uses Geodude to make miso, the guard who gets a Dustox, the farmers who use Pokémon you bring them to tend the fields and so on. And for an added dash of awesome, those Pokémon that appear in the village are the exact same ones you selected during the mission. If you give the cook a huge Geodude, that's going to be a huge one for your entire playthrough. If you put a shiny Pokémon to work the fields, it will still be shiny when you visit it later, and so on. It really made you feel like you were making a difference, and it was so satisfying having a constant reminder that you were the one to bring those Pokémon to the village and help your neighbors learn to live with them. S/V feels as static and stagnant as anything by comparison.
Man remember when Nintendo used to be famously so strict on its quality control that it literally wouldn't let devs who put out subpar products be published to its consoles and every cartridge had an "Official Seal of Approval" ? How the mighty have fallen. Now Nintendo is so busy attacking the scene that even makes these games playable that it forgot to you know...make the games playable.
Your thoughts of the Sada plot fascinates me, if only because I interpreted it pretty differently (and more generously) Note: I have intense bias at play here because I personally grew up with a neglectful mother that died young. Also she looked almost exactly like Sada, that was a fun thing to realize. Anyway, I thought the plot was conveying that Sada herself was the selfish one chasing a dangerous dream, and that the AI developed enough sentience that it could see the harm and stand against her. That's why, in my reading of it, the final protective protocol kicked in. Sada not even trusting her own AI, and put a hard-coded override not even the AI had access to, kind of like a firmware based security mechanism. Of course... I'm probably giving them too much credit, and filling in a lot of gaps. The rest of the game's package doesn't exactly inspire confidence
I watched an lp of the game a while back and had a pretty similar reading of it. The AI seemed to actually develop to be a better person than the original professor ever was, seeing his/her plans as both illogical and unethical, and also seeming more concerned for their child. I really think that the AI actually came to love Arven as their own child, and lied to him at the end (about his parent always loving him) both to comfort him and because...maybe the AI actually did, and was speaking for themselves.
I'm 5 hours in after watching the BDSP video of yours, I appreciate how much you’ve documented and went through all of the issues of Scarlet and Violet. I've been curious about several aspects of the game but didn't want to spend 60 dollars on something I already knew was infamously flawed, so this helped me convince myself not to (despite morbid curiousity). At least I can appreciate the older Pokémon games which had more time to develop and are overall just… better in every way (I'm mainly referring to the Gen 3 DS remake and Gen 5, which are my personal favorites) Also I had no interest in Xenoblade prior, but the points you brought up about it has made me consider checking out the franchise
At least the modern Pokemon spinoffs still slap though and seemed to have plenty of development time, like Rescue Team DX, Pokken Tournament, and New Pokemon Snap I all quite liked. Detective Pikachu Returns comes out on Friday, and visually looks kinda like a 3DS game / other mainline Pokemon Switch titles despite having like 7 years... but hey I'd love to be surprised by it! Gen 5 is a personal favorite for me as well, I mean wearing N's hat and going by Harmonia and all that lul. Gotta miss days like that where the biggest controversies were "why can't we catch old Pokemon until postgame?" rather than games just not functioning... And yis I would certainly recommend Xenoblade, one of my favourite IPs nowadays. The most recent title was my least favorite, and if I have the time I'd definitely do a video essay on its story, but still quite like them, and they're great comparison material for Switch titles. Appreciate you tuning into the videos!
I'm only about two hours in, and I don't think you'll see this, but I just wanted to say a big thank you for mentioning colourblindness at the shiny bit. I'm a colourblind shiny hunter (lmao) and the step back from LA makes this a particularly miserable time for me. I'll never know how many dozens upon dozens of shinies I've missed because of it. And what's more, the time of day in game actually messes with the Pokémon's colours enough to compound the issue... I have to be paranoid beyond belief on the off chance something is shiny.
I'm a little under an hour into this, the part talking about the gyms, and I just wanna say that I've always wanted an open-world Pokemon game, and how I imagined that would go with the gyms is similar to something that was said in the first season of the anime. The gym leaders assess your level and pick an appropriate team from there. If you're around level 15, then they'll accommodate and have a team around that level but if you have Pokemon around level 50, then they'll have a team more appropriate to fight you. For them to not do this really confuses me?? I understand that that'd be more work in balancing and everything but they set that up as a possibility from gen 1 so I don't know why they didn't think to do that now? Literally in all of my fantasies from when I was a kid of an open-world Pokemon game/fan game, they had that be something so that you could do the gyms in whatever order you wanted and it not be a problem. (I haven't played any of the Pokemon games on Switch due to a lack of interest in playing them. They just honestly don't seem like fun to me and I don't want to support their current practice of pumping games out one after another. They seem really soulless and lack the heart earlier games had.)
@@thevioletbee5879 I could have sworn that in the og anime Brock says that Ashs' was a novice trainer and brought out Pokemon appropriate to his skill level?
3:08:26 I don't think it's about being a good or bad person. People are just people, sometimes they do good things and sometimes bad things. It's not that simple. And people also change their motivations all the time. People get tunnel vision, get overwhelmed with power, knowledge, stress etc. Every person is fighting a battle you know nothing about, right? (I played Violet) Turo cared enough about to Sada to have a child with her, and then this person who was such an important part of his life just left. That would put anyone in a bad place, make you focus on what you know and still have, to get through the pain. I missed this on my first playthrough, but if you look at the very first whiteboard of the Zero Lab before walking up to AI professor, you see the board is covered Soley in pictures of Arven and baby mabosstiff. It was the first he saw when he went in to work, and the last thing he saw when he left. You don't have that if you don't care about your child. Parents do crazy things when their children are in danger, which is why I think when Turo saw the the smaller Miraidon getting attacked he instinctively stepped in to shield him with his own body and unfortunately lost his life. The AI professor wouldn't have emulated care for Arven if they hadn't seen an example of it to learn from. Also, Professor didn't make the AI to continue their work when they died. They made the AI when the only other person they trusted left, and they could only trust themselves to finish the work together. Probably because they wanted to make their dreams a reality so they could go back up and share it with their son.

Hey dad you were supposed to buy swiss cheese - ua-cam.com/video/_Yh5bgtLbTo/v-deo.html
Pokémon has become the literal definition of "too big to fail", because if any other video game franchise had these same problems, it would be seen as unacceptable.
oh it was seen as unacceptable, what you're looking for is "if any other video game franchise had these same problems it would not be played at all".
The new Star Wars game is a good example of that
@@TheFifthMyth wait is that bad? The clips seem fine
@@TtegeggJedi survivor isn’t as bad as SV was at launch, or even how it is now, but on PC it does have quite a few issues. Console ports are mostly all good though (PS5 had some pre-launch bugs but they got patched out before release thankfully)
it can still fail just requires its audience to grow a backbone and not buy brand they shill for
Okay, I have to admit, "When Worlds Collide" was a perfect fit for your opening that I didn't know I needed. Makes me miss YTV now.
It almost got me in hot water with copyright, but luckily was able to get it resolved and publish it as is...
@AcousticHarmonia Don't know about you but it made me miss watching YTV as a kid. You're Canadian so you should know what I mean.
@@lthefifteenth661 YTV was the goat
I keep forgetting YTV was Canadian and get weird stares when I bring it up
@Cyrus2395 Have you ever tried to explain YTV, Teletoon, and the Family Channel to Americans?
Playing scarlet and violet you can practically feel the panic of the developers slapping areas together hours before the release deadline. I feel a bit bad for them having their names attached to a product that is so clearly not ready
Welcome to modern corporate slavery. You either actively contribute to the decline of media or workers rights, or you die and starve
True
I do think that someone thatcares more about scienific developtment than their own life is kinda admirable, but the common interpretation of saving Koraidon because she cares for him as a life form that deserves to live is straight up nonsensical
I relate to this so much.
The AI is just a copy of the original professor, so it had to copy love of Arven and remorse for ignoring him from the original professor.
@@cursedGalataeaThat or it came to the latter conclusion after copying everything else. The base framework may be identical to Sadas, but what the AI does with it overtime may differ to what she'd do.
The Pokémon Company is doing what Bethesda has been doing for years, only with no way for modders to fix the games and no backlash for releasing in any state and patching into playability.
i believe scarvio, arceus and swsh have some mods. appare tly its easy to mod a switch even
I wish Nintendo would at least calm down and let us mod the games
There's a few people that are modding BDSP. They're actually pretty great! ... you just need to mod your Switch.
More like 15- 20 years
Lmao. These games don't even have voice acting despite being developed by a multi billion dollar company, and share prices with games like God of War, Xenoblade, and Zelda. Pokemon is more like 30 years behind at this point.
GTA V was release ten years ago
@@broom673 I don't like the games but I think 30 years is a bit ridiculous lmao, Mario 64 came out around 30 years ago
I still find it disgusting they keep locking postgame behind a paywall for half the price of the game
So utterly disgusting, and unfortunately it will never get better - it's Pokémon, and people will fork over money for Pokémon no matter how absurdly priced it is.
given them $60 for a game not even worth that much? fuck it, give them even more money!
for real! release a dog shit game and then lock large portions of content behind DLC.
This would also create replayability as you could then replay the game in the other direction and face the gyms on a different order.
i wish it was the same as well, but to gamefreak, the manga is: "ahhh, manga scary, it is more pokemon than what we make"
Pokemon Crystal Clear did this!
It's sad to think that the closest to voice acting we ever got in the mainline pokemon games was all the way back in GEN 5 with Roxie's concert

and the man on village bridge that sang a whole song
Gen 5 also had N say, like, one word that varied on the version im pretty sure
Although on the surface it was cool, but after say 8 seconds it becomes annoying. i put on my own music to drown that shit out. or just go strait to the gym leader just to shut her up. but then i lose out on experience, which sucks. :/
The sandwich minigame is hilarious for the wrong reason. It’s like a point of view of a subway worker who’s on their 15th hour of overtime
Same, man. Same.
@Marlena499 You like the old games because you played them and have nostalgia for them. If you were a child today (the target audience) you wouldn't enjoy them nearly as much.

@@1BadAssArchAngelvs14 I was actually thinking about those games when I wrote my comment... You're spot on.
@@1BadAssArchAngelvs14 even Dragon Quest Monsters Joker is better than Pokémon Diamond and Pearl
Except there’s an in-game reason that Geeta is a terrible boss that level restricts their gym leaders.
Also you’re asking for WAY too much. You’re asking the developers to both:
1) level scale pokemon based on badges obtain.
2) the amount of pokemon they have.
Maybe instead of being an grown ahss adult crying over a kids game YOU do it yourself.
Oh wait. You cant. You’re just a loser adult crying like a baby over a kids game.
Just make a team of 6 for every gym and then remove pokemon based on the amount of badges they have.
Please don't insult Roblox like that, I have seen a couple of games on there that have much, much better backgrounds/overworlds then this shit.
From what I know SV tripled the assets due to the added layers in textures I think...still little overall in the scheme of things.
@@zjzr08 The textures don't really have much layers. Well, they don't have layers at all:
- The body is stored in a single layer
- The eyes and mouth states are stored in another image, each eye and mouth state being a part of that image
- The maps are also stored in single files
A complete texture for a normal pokemon is around 200kb to 400kb, which is pretty normal.
@@ivanshiny_ Interesting, I have downloaded a Mudsdale assets pack and it's 10MB total for some reason.
If all Pokémon were transferable, it wouldn’t mean much to these buggy and glitchy games.
Didn't they also made female variants of Pokemons on gen 8 for most of the gen 1 pokemons?
I really hope eventually they make a Pokemon card where the art shows someone half in a wall or something, to truly immortalize how broken this game is. I will make an entire binder of those cards if they do.

The truest tragedy of this game is that it has the makings to be one of the best Pokemon games of all time... And then was released like 3 years earlier than any development team could possibly produce an open world game in let alone one as tiny and fractured as Gamefreak lol. Pure travesty.
Not gonna lie as a Sonic fan it fucks me up that the franchise STILL hasn't lived down Sonic 06 despite it being nearly 20 years old at this point, yet game freak releases their version of Sonic 06 every year and only now is the public starting to be like "wow these pokemon games aren't as good as they used to be :("
Lmao, that's what I'm saying, too.
@@SokolvaI have not been as fortunate as you when it comes to Sonic fans who said they enjoyed 06.
@@Sokolvapeople enjoy the game regardless because the franchise sells itself. the same cannot be said for sonic to the same degree
The Piers Singing scene in SW/SH is the mark of what Pokémon games are today
Just undefendable if you have any sort of standard at all for what you buy
Of course, the majority of sales are people who don't (aka parents who just pick it up for their children), so they have zero reason to actually invest anything into the games, they just have to stay barely good enough for kids
Any time someone praises the game it's always "It's the best *pokemon* game, it's a good *pokemon* game", because if you compare it to actually worthy it falls apart very fast
Oh and also reminder they're 90 dollars now, not 60, since they just slash what would be post game and call it dlc
If we're talking USD, $95 actually, DLC is marked up $5 this time around
@@AcousticHarmonia maybe theres something extra than what we get from regular dlcs, like in splatoon3 the dlc is 25 rather than the 20 dollars in splatoon2, thats bc it had a new lobby area (5 dollars +u get a special namecard) + new story area and new content. but then again its pokemon so its probably just for more money
Is that why we advanced to open world games?
They had the audacity to have *another* singing gym leader in SV.

4 hours into the 7 hour video essay I can definitely say he already put more wok in this essay than gamefreak did on their game
*SPOILER WARNING*
I don't think the reveal of how the original professor dies was a "they were good all along" twist but another example of their obsession with creating what they view as paradise, aka bringing pokemon from either the far future or ancient past and trying to force them into an ecosystem not meant for them, they were so obsessed with this vision that they even died trying to ensure the survival of the box legendary so they can be part of their vision of paradise
and yeah their motivation sounds dumb to us the audience, but that's the thing with obsessions, they rarely come off as logical to outside observers, and frankly I like that the AI version was written the way it was as I found it a refreshing subversion of the typical evil AI trope
Even the AI points out that it cannot “logically understand why they’d follow such a foolish dream”
Obsession is supposed to be silly, nonsensical, to the non deluded, it’s stupid and makes zero sense, but that’s what makes it good.

Your too old for Pokémon cope harder, shit, piss, cry grow up and move on
I remember those types of dreams as a kid :( the whole “Wowie what if they made a super awesome Pokémon adventure game on the console like Skyrim”
That dream is dead now I suppose.
There are two things about that rewrite section that i have issues with:
First being Team Stars antagonism, specifically the leaders.
I remember when criticizing SV was basically a crime... Glad to see someone finally give it a REAL critique.
That's because Pokémon fans can't handle their game getting (rightfully) criticised.
It’s ironic given that Pokémon is famous for causing Seizures and they had to pull the Porygon episode lol
yup yup. i get nausea and headaches from playing more than 10 minutes. i plowed through with shiny hunting but afyer that wave and putting the game down i just... havent picked it back up. it physically hurts to play, ive just been going back the legends were i dont need to squint at the screen
God knows how many subtle shinies I ran past going from raid crystal to raid crystal.
i personally suffer from carpal tunnel and am slightly red-green colorblind [to name a few things], and as someone who has both violet and legends arceus, i don't understand why people gravitate towards scarlet and violet for shiny hunting older pokemon you could hunt in legends..
i understand that yes, the herba mystica methods are broken and getting it SHOULD be some sort of challenge, but it's.. physically impossible to get it without an online subscription! i've tried local play with my boyfriend, and we both hyper trained with super effective types and even a strong moveset against these pokemon, and even that did *nothing* to help! if your shiny hunting methods aren't able to be done without a literal paywall, it makes no sense to put it in!
i have many shinies in legends arceus, one of which is a carnivine which i would've missed were it not for the effects in that game, and seeing the lack of effects severely ruins my enjoyment of the game, especially considering that i can't *play* as long as i would enjoy to (see: aforementioned carpal tunnel issues) due to this!
it's entirely ruined my personal enjoyment of the game to the point where i would much rather shiny hunt in legends, even though i was originally a little excited to see the shiny hunting methods in this gen, only to be slapped in the face with.. this. i miss when you could just literally run around with a perfected pokedex page in a mass outbreak and you got your shiny basically scot free, but everyone's moved to shiny hunting in scarlet and violet... and abled people will just harass literally any disabled person even SLIGHTLY criticizing the most optimal/used methods. not everyone has the ability to get the shiny charm and it's frustrating to see basically every abled person online go "well hurr durr it provides a challenge that's fun and the reward is easy if you have herba mystica and a shiny charm"
these past few gens have been so hostile to disabled people it isn't even funny anymore.

Glad I saved my money
My friend's copy crashed when she was trying to catch a Glimmora. The Switch would not turn back on no matter what she did after that crash.
Pokémon Scarlet bricked her switch.
Did she refund her switch?

How badly do you even have to code for that to happen?!?!?!

I liked the plot twist comparing the game to cyberpunk so much! I literally paused the video to contemplate how good of a transition that was! Subbing for sure 🔥
Appreciate it friendo
LOL yeah that was great, but people being critical of the game immedially let me know it wasn't about pokemon
But Cyberpunk was advertised with thousands of features, and it didn’t come out with them
@leonardofarias8843 I wouldn't say S/V had false advertising, in comparison.
This video easily took like a year to make. Amazing work brother this is insane.
@Dragoonsoul-ut2sn hey gamefreak please let us level down Pokemon like in Xenoblade 3 thank you.
Shhhhhh, don’t give GaneFreak ideas that are too clever for them…
The Pokémon center thing is kind of funny as with the reason given, that would mean that the Pokémon company sees Nintendo themselves as a middle man to cut down since they have their own online storefront to sell products as well.
And since Nintendo is 34% of Pokémon, it's a circular shell game.
It’s pretty obvious Pokémon wants to profit from it directly
The worst part about the whole "no voice acting" part is, that Pokémon Masters a darn MOBILE (gacha) game even has voice acting.
Sure it is not made by the main company and the voice "acting" is mostly stuff like "mh", "yea" and smaller catch phrases but still.
3 hours and 58 minutes in.
Your rewrite of the Pokemon Scarlet plot makes me a bit teary eyed. It was DAMN good.
Makes me sad that Game freak won't dedicate themselves to a good Pokemon game ever again.
Only broken, half finished games that aim to at least be 'kinda fun.'
I loved Pokemon Scarlet when I played it but this video really opened my eyes to how broken it is. Damn, I miss the DS and 3DS era.
I wonder if AcousticHarmonia or any other content creator out there can do more story rewrites on other video games...
SwSh download size was 13GB so I think they did have 16GB cartridges, they're just programmed badly, IMO.
But have you considered the cost of using a braincell? That's 1% of profits that could go into that 200% increase going to.......paying investors! We can't have that.

Glad you enjoyed it! I had ideally hoped it would be done sooner actually, but I also never anticipated it would end up being this long of a video xd
But then you can get a well-informed opinion before purchase and we can't have that.
@@plushdragonteddy Yeah I didn't give a whole lot of thought to how it might work the other way around, I just kinda figured in the back of my head it wouldn't be the first time Pokemon didn't make sense in one specific version lul
What comes to mind is my favorite mainline games, Black and White.
N fights for the truth that pokemon and humans inevitably hurt one another, you fight for the ideal of a good world in spite of that
@@camazettz Never thought of it like that before, interesting way to interpret it then
The work that players have done in modding SV demonstrates a depressing reality about these games: their supporters are right.
Thank you so much!
@@zjzr08 Yeah. They're both a tiny part of a larger story.
Tbf I enjoyed apricorns in HGSS. My only complaint was you get so few a day :(
@Phantom StarsX Pokeblocks could be kinda counted as crafting too, right?

Glad you enjoyed it!

Jacq says that he designed the Pokédex app for your Rotom phone when you talk to him, actually!
I think Kingambit would work perfectly for that role. You would lose the connection of the Elite 5 representing the Titan Pokemon's types, though.
X and Y felt unfinished
Sun and Moon were padded to feel less unfinished
Sword and Shield are unfinished
Scarlet and Violet are blatantly unfinished.

I always keep seeing "Don't worry, they're just testing the waters with this one!" I've been seeing that since Let's Go
Long time Sonic fan here,
You've made the right choice.
There is an insane amount of apologists for even blatantly bad games in every fandom.
Same man same. It still makes me sad, but you gotta know when to let go. I've been playing alot of fan games recently though. They help scratch that itch.
Scarlet and Violet don't just make Sword and Shield look finished, they make Sword and Shield look like decent games

You can run from trainer battles in Pokemon SV. You still have to pay the other trainer because you essentially lost, but your party won't get wiped this way.
It's just a Quality of Life thing, as if you end up fighting a losing battle, you can quit out instead of watching all 6 of your Pokemon get OHKO'd
Difficulty modes are a good call, if done right, but gemefreak seems insistent on leaving out difficulty modes or any player options at all, just look at how they removed the option to turn off the exp share (which i would argue scarlet and violet is balanced around the exp share better than sword and shield was) and recently they removed set mode so you have to know what the opponent's pokemon is
Yeah, definitely not the kind of thing that seems likely to happen unfortunately...
@@magolor152 Level caps are the easiest solution. Though well composed teams, held items, good AI, and good EV spreads are the best.

My most important things about videos like these are to see how the person fixes and changes the story, and i LOVE how you did your story, I'll surely be ignoring canon and pretending your rewrite is canon from now on
The song for the beginning of this video actually perfectly describes the plot of this entire game. 😂
When it was first revealed what the general premise of the game was, I saw a meme somebody made shortly after that showed the robot and caveman posing from that spongebob episode with the song and it had the caption "Pokemon Scarlet/Violet 2022" and before the game was even out I was like "I know what I must do..."
High sales prove that they can keep getting away with this. How disappointing.
Pokemon is the one instance where the target audience doesn't care about game quality for price and where the majority of sales occur without waiting for reviews. Pokemon just came out? Buy it! - oh its shit... too bad, already bought it.

Honestly, I think some Pokemon fans have just gaslighted themselves into liking the Switch Pokemon games
Really pushing that ten minute YT limit I see!
I appreciate the super thanks! And you know it, gotta squeeze out every second to make sure it goes above 10 minutes
Trainer and team composition are also thematically attrocious. ie:
Brassius having an Arboliva instead of a Brambleghast as an ace.
This is a really good summery of exactly how I feel about Scarlet and Violet
I hate that the description I've given to the past 4 Pokemon games (2 entire generations) has been "A good generation trapped in the body of a bad game."
I genuinely have fun with the new additions to each generation, but really it feels like the games themselves are trying their hardest to be as unplayable as possible.
Same… I love Sw/Sh raids and dynamax adventures, but I miss the old contests and safari zone and stuff :(
This is a downgrade from the previous description given to the first 5 generations, “A good game trapped on inferior hardware”
That’s the equivalence of good ideas, bad game.
Note the bad game part
@@MustacheDLuffy I'm no stranger to "good idea, bad execution". It just sucks that it's happening to Pokemon consistently. It's not like XY where it was followed up with a banger. It's been time after time and I'm growing weary of it.
Open world Pokémon games can work. What they can do is have all the routes and cities open, and only go to the gyms based on how many badges you have.
Open world shouldn't be only the exploration is open but also the challenges, so I think having Gym Leaders be open is fine, as long as their teams are based on your Badge, so you can choose any gym you want in any order.

I always say though that it already means a lot tuning into stuff I've made, since that's time that could be used on literally anything else at that moment, so that's already more than enough and there shouldn't ever be any obligation for tipping.
Well Pokémon is a marquee franchise from Nintendo they get special treatment
Your thoughts of the Sada plot fascinates me, if only because I interpreted it pretty differently (and more generously)
Note: I have intense bias at play here because I personally grew up with a neglectful mother that died young.
At least I can appreciate the older Pokémon games which had more time to develop and are overall just… better in every way
(I'm mainly referring to the Gen 3 DS remake and Gen 5, which are my personal favorites)
Also I had no interest in Xenoblade prior, but the points you brought up about it has made me consider checking out the franchise
I am have been recommended this seven hour video essay by my close friends. We are very enjoying this.
Glad to hear it, appreciate you tuning in
I'm a little under an hour into this, the part talking about the gyms, and I just wanna say that I've always wanted an open-world Pokemon game, and how I imagined that would go with the gyms is similar to something that was said in the first season of the anime.
I thought that was in the OVA. Not the OG anime.
@@thevioletbee5879 I could have sworn that in the og anime Brock says that Ashs' was a novice trainer and brought out Pokemon appropriate to his skill level?
@@lother1111 That happened in the OVA.
@@thevioletbee5879 In the gen 2 anime Falkner used his Pidgeot in the gym battle with Ash because Ash also brought his Charizard to the first gym.
@@vanjagalovic3621 Ah. That tracks then.
I think this opening is my favorite intro to any youtube video I've seen.
I was laughing at it so hard, so same
3:08:26 I don't think it's about being a good or bad person.
Bro is seeking to rival mauler with long man content, and I love it
