- Today I'm going to show you two super simple color combos using Derwent Artists pencils for coloring leaves and flowers.
I created this as part of my #AisForAugust2021 tag as I use mediums that start with the letter "A." I have not used my Derwent Artists as much as I should, but absolutely adore these pencils!

Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial! ❤
You are so welcome! ❤️
Enjoyed this video very much ... love your coloring style. Would love to see the mushroom colored!
Awe ty Sherrie. I ended up doing the rest off camera but can always find another
With these pencils, you can get all kinds of color depth because of the layering. You can even see little bits of pencil lines through the other layers. It gives interest.
Yes, these are definitely a layering pencil and they do really well for that style of art/coloring.
Thank you! I bought the 72ct 4yrs ago and haven't used them in the past 3yrs. I will be doing a page with these pencils for August #. I needed the reminder to play with my long forgotten pencils!😜
Haha no problem. Using them for this page reminded me of how I missed these lol
Thank you for sharing! The flowers are fabulous
You are so welcome!
Love this color combo!
Thank you Michelle! ❤
I love what your doing and with the artists pencils, I bought the 72 and then bought open stock till I had them all. They are not easy to use but are great pencils
It’s a lovely accent, I was born in Birmingham England and emigrated to Australia in 1974 I take an interest in accents because there are so many different ones in the UK 😊
Yes, the Artists are not an easy pencil, but they are a beautiful pencil and I enjoy using them. Honestly, I need to use them more! Oh how funny. Yeah I guess from the US point of view, I don't have an accent, but I could see how I do to those from the UK and Australia haha
What a beautiful color combo, would love to see your colours for the rest of the picture 🥰
Awe I ended up doing the rest on camera. It is hard to tell when people want to see a whole picture or not haha, but I'll definitely try to do more combos/techniques like this.
Very nice. Looking forward to seeing this completed.
Thank you! Almost done actually. Just need to finish the background (the one thing that stumps me every time)
Such a pretty combo!! Thanks for sharing 💗
Ty my sweet friend
Thank you. I have the 72 set. I do find them scratchy sometimes. Thanks for the tip on circular motions and flicking.
They can be on smooth paper for sure!
Beautiful combo!! Not sure I’ve ever heard of these pencils. Tfs💗
They're not very popular in the states that's for sure but they're really not bad at all
Beautiful combos! Thanks for sharing! I might give these pencils try. 😊💖
Thank you Deb! They aren't bad and they aren't that expensive - you can always snag a few open stock too.
It is a beautiful color combo I enjoy your videos
Awe ty so much Sonette. You are so kind
Really Enjoyed this Video, and The Flowers are Very Beautiful!💜
Awe thank you so much Sherry!
I have three sets of different Derwents and am using the Academy for my A for August page. Might use my Derwent Artist pencils when D rolls around in November.
Oooh that works
Simple, but nice
Thank you 🙂
Hi Kori, thank you for sharing, I’ve learned a lot. Ohh I would love to see how you color the mushroom
Haha so I was on the fence whether or not to and ended up coloring it off camera. Didn't know how much interest they're would be in Derwent Artists since not a ton of people own them
@@ColorfullyOptimistic if I were Derwent, i must thank you fbecause you have successfully captured ppl of your work by using Derwent Artist👍👍
Show. Muito obrigada.
obrigada!
Very pretty combos. I do not own the Artists, I had the Procolor, but gifted them. Not for me. Nice to see you use Derwent pencils
I actually like Derwent but the Procolour are rough. So I get that
This is a beautiful color combination. I just have a hand full of derwent artist pencils and I don't fancy them, so I didn't get any more. I also like to feather for flowers. Will you do the whole page with the artist?
Yes I kept going with artists but I am stuck on the background lol
Thank you or this video. At some point you were talking about the Procolour pencil. I remember quite clearly because I'd only just succumbed to the colouring craze, Derwent was on the point of introducing the Procolour pencils, & they were aimed again at the pencil artist, but for those who wanted a softer lead (the Coloursoft pencil was aimed at the amateur colourist.) Either way, they are beautiful pencils, but still not soft enough to be used on the majority of colouring books. I was so disappointed when trying to use them for Kerby Rosanes.
That said, after watching this video, I'm taking out my handful of Artist pencils to colour a portrait on Strathmore Toned Tan!
Yes! The Procolour were excellent for hair I found. The artists are harder, and they have their quirks, but really, they worked beautifully on this page. I have no complaints.
Nice work, Kori. There are so many different types of Derwent colored pencils. Besides their lightfast rating, I'd love to know the differences.
Oooooh that would be a long answer. But I've had a lot of people ask so I might do a video explaining it all.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic Thank you! 🙏🏻✨
Artists are harder cores, better for detail work, lighter in pigment and good for layering. The Studio are identical to Artists but with thinner cores for extra fine points and detailing, but only have 72 matching colours whereas the Artists full range is 120. Coloursoft are very soft cores, sort of like Prismas, good for mushing colours together rather than layering. Procolour are somewhere in the middle. They can be layered but not as much as the Artists/Studio, but they'll keep a point better than the Coloursoft which I would personally only use with quite smooth paper and some kind of blending medium as they wear down very quickly on textured paper. Drawing are a much smaller range than the others with only 24 colours, lots of natural shades of browns, greens and reds. Really lovely if you do nature pieces. They have extra fat cores so you can lay down lots of pigment at once but wear down quickly as with the Coloursoft, although they're not quite as soft and they don't smush as well. Inktense are water activated, kind of like watercolour pencils, except they're ink so once they dry after being activated, they are permanent. They can be used on fabric as a result as they won't wash out. They're also good for first pass when doing watercolour mixed media as they won't reactivate. The watercolour pencils speak for themselves, but they're fairly poor quality compared to say the Albrecht Durer pencils and I think they let down the Derwent brand. The Lightfast pencils are the professional range, very expensive, sort of similar to the Drawing mixed with the Procolour but with a less plastic looking finish when burnished than the Procolour. They're so costly because they all have the highest lightfast rating available, which is only important if you're planning to sell and/or display your work. There are a few unique colours in the range though as with the others, but you can create them with blending and layering. Overall the colours are fairly similar across the ranges but not exact matches. The new Chromaflow set is another small one, and they're super skinny pencils with thin cores. Not really sure what the point of them is tbh and wouldn't recommend buying them just yet as they're quite expensive for what they are. I haven't used them myself but there are lots of reviews and everyone seems to agree that they're kind of pointless. The metallic pencils are also not great, but I find that to be the case with all metallic pencils. The pastel pencils are essentially chalk pastels inside wooden pencil casings, which are easier for doing details in that medium compared to the chunky pastels you usually see. I think that's all of them 🤭
@@mydogeatspuke Thank you! ❤️
Thank you for sharing this video. That’s a lovely combo. I was wondering if you could share your experience with this pencils vs the Procolour, particularly the colour palette? I would deeply appreciate it 😀
There are more colors with the Artist set, but that's because I bought the box set. Artists are a lot softer/muted compared to Procolour, but really, the range of colors is fairly close to one another. Procolours versions are a little bolder, but that's because there's more pigment for sure. Both are very hard leads though.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic Thank you for the info, that’s really helpful ❤️
I know this question is very late, sorry...B/c curiosity and the cat...which lead do you think is harder; Artists or Procolours? Thx!
Artists for me
Thank you for sharing the technique and color choices. I have a question, though. And I really mean it as a question from someone who is inexperienced and wants to learn. Why do you layer from darker to lighter? What does that accomplish over doing the opposite? Thank you!
I do it because I don't want all the tooth of the paper gone before the actual color and shadows are lay down. Especially with a hard pencil.
Yes, so this is a complex answer. First, light to dark, dark to light, they are both right. It is about preference. I see shadows first; thus, I build those first. Some people see their highlights and gradually build into shadows. But, like Dee said as well, especially if you are heavier handed like me, I build dark to light to avoid taking off the tooth before I finish.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic Thank you for taking the time to explain. I'll have to try it the way that you do it and see how it works for me.
@@deedeebattle2522 Really good point! Thank you.
I love your nails. Did you do them.
Haha no. My nail gal does them. She's an artist for sure! Love her work. I wish I was talented enough to do them myself, but at least there are people out there who are talented to do it for me :)
I don't...I find them tòo distracting🤔. But that's just me, 73 years old with plain nails😁 And I still love your tutorials regardless of your nails😀
@@ColorfullyOptimistic cool.
@@Patracat 🙂
Trying to place your accent, where are you from ? 🥰🥰
Oh, I don't really have an accent, lol do I? I'm from California born and raised, but now live in Utah.
All Derwent brand colored pencils lacked lightfastness prior to the creation of their Derwent Lightfast line. They are rather nice to use if you like them. And if,you only use colored pencils in coloring books, lightfastness is not an issue.
Oh yea I mean I don't need lightfast for these books at all
Not true. The Drawing pencils were apparently released in 2006 according to Amazon (first available) and are all lightfast. Most of the Coloursoft pencils are 7/8 and according to Amazon they were first available in 2007. The Lightfast line was released in 2018. They may not have had a ratings chart before, I don't know, but that doesn't mean they weren't lightfast. It's also worth noting that "lightfast" is a scale, so something with a 5 or 6 rating is still lightfast, and the Artists range (first available in 2007) has many that are 5 or above and also many that are 7/8 which is the highest level of lightfastness.
