Using Derwent Inktense Pencils for Adult Coloring Pages
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- I tried the Derwent Inktense Pencils for the first time on one of my coloring pages to see if these popular colored pencils were as good as people say. They are NOT wax, not oil, and not watercolor - so what makes the Derwent Inktense pencils so special?

Want to see more pencils? I reviewed 26 other pencils brands in this epic video comparison! ua-cam.com/video/rC2AErhcKQE/v-deo.html
yeshow about Holbein s. Im happy with my new Japanese Book style Sets-$30 for 30 and 90 are available on Amazon... Irojiten pencils...very smooth pretty pastels and luminous sets. I always forget these videos aren't done recently most of the time...maybe you already have them...sorry to keep blabbing... Thanks!
Love this video and did you know that Lachri Fine art did the cover art for the tins plus Derwent is known for its bad tins but the pencils are not usually damaged. I don't keep mine in the tins anyways so a dented tin wouldn't have bothered me. Love your videos, can't wait for that sharpener review.
i hate youtubers who talk thaaaaaaaaaaaaat much!!!!! like everyone hate them. those who talk so much on there video why dont they get this simple education from someone that just get knto the stuff ur talking give headche to people. my head is so much hurting due to only 4 minute of watching this video thats why i wrote this comment
11 minutes of talking and then when u strt the colouring u still couldnt shut ur mouth.
Perk of living where I do - the Derwent factory is about 8 miles away, and at their Pencil Museum in Keswick (Cumbria UK) a little further away they have their factory shop. They sell pretty much every item open stock, and when the packaging changes, a lot of the old stock is reduced (sometimes up to 50% off). The product inside is the same, so a real bargain!
Oooh!!
Wow. Lucky you. That would be my dream come true!!!
Thanks for the tip! When I'm able to visit the UK I will definitely put this on my to do list
Argh, I live in York and now waiting for the 120 set to be delivered today; I should have driven up to Keswick 🤪
You are so fortunate! 😊
I've found that super light layers make for wonderful art. Some tips....inktense Will reactivate from a plastic palette. Keep any broken leads...you can use them in a palette with some water...just like a block. If you scribble some pigment or scrape it with a knife into a palette you can still create larger quantities of ink for your projects
Great suggestion on the broken leads! Might also be worth keeping any pencil shavings from the sharpener to see what can be done with them... maybe some interesting abstract effects!
@@SarahRenaeClark I'd thought if that too...but didn't want it to seem like an essay LOL
Great tip, thanks.
Great idea. Wish I could do that with coloured pencils. I get so sad when the lead breaks
ATT: Derwent. I apologize for not doing these pencils justice. Please don’t hate me, I love your stuff. Let’s be friends?
I love my Inktense so much. I can use them dry, I can use them on a separate paper like paint, I can do anything with them, and I love that.
I tested some Materials since retired. Inktense is my Favorite.
Absolutely amazing!!!! I thought “oh no! It looks Awful!” But then BAM!!! You made it AMAZING!! Excellent job! Really enjoyed watching you work through your mistakes!! It taught me a lot. I would have ripped it up and been done but seeing you push past the “mistakes” and making something beautiful in the end is very inspiring. Ty
This comment is EXACTLY why I didn’t just give up on this page. We can almost always turn something around. And those frustrations can come with almost anything we create- so it’s important to just push through the messy parts or the mistakes sometimes and trust that it will all come together!
I agree! It was a GREAT save!!!
when did it look awful? i thought it looked good throughout
I am so happy that you included the Inktense in the color palette! I have the full set and this will make it easier for me to use them more often. Thank you also for explaining the astericks and why you used the same number sometimes twice. It is a wonderful and helpful resource and I love mine! You put a lot of thought into it (AND TIME!) and it is much appreciated!
I LOVE the color catalog so much! :)
If anyone is interested, the artist who did the art on the new tins is Lisa clough. She has a UA-cam channel called lachri fine art and there are lots of videos on there about different options for inktense. My favourite inktense piece of hers is a super adorable red panda, but you’ll have to scroll back a few years for that.
Enjoying your experiments Sarah.
Thanks Sarah. Yout color choices are beautiful. I love my Inktense pencils. Whenever I'm going to use them, I copy the image on to heavier weigh paper or even watercolor paper. They layer so well and the heavier weight paper makes layering easier.
I'm curious to know which technique you use copy the design to heavier paper.
@@jenniferalvarez4041 if it's in a book I copy it to the heavier paper. If it's on the internet and very similar to the picture the artist is doing on you tube, I make sure to look for images that are "copy right free" then print it out. For instance you could type into a search engine "copy right free bird on tree branches images, and a bunch of images will pop up. You Must be sure that any picture is copy right free!
There are also artists who provide the image of that days project on UA-cam. Diane Antone Studio is one such artist on UA-cam.
I love inktense, because they are so intense. But therein is the key. Always go lighter than you think! Also stop short of where you want the colour to end, leaving white. Because it allows you to gradient the colours, without having to go way too dark than you want, to compensate. So use the pigment sparingly.
I got the small tin of Inktense for Christmas. I look forward to having a go at recreating your jellyfish illustration. And that definitely answers the question I was asking myself about whether I own a good quality set of pencils. :-)
The colour palette thing you did at the beginning was great - really useful. Imagine I've done two years at art college and I'm feeling like I learnt more in this half-hour video.
I love that they are permanent when they dry! They blend well and you can use a water brush to tip off the end of the pencil! 💚💚
I think I need these pencils now!
I absolutely love my derwent inktense pencils I have used them in my colouring books particularly those with intricate designs like ones by Kerby Rosanes. I hope one day I will have enough to buy the 72 set. A little suggestion those pencils a bit like an oil pastel, a little bit of colour also goes a long way. They are really versatile.
That was interesting. I purchased these in 2015 and the tin is exactly the same as the first battered item you recieved. I hated these when I got them, and I think I swatched them and then never touched them again. I was not able to continue with my hobby beyond 2015 due to circumstances but I am just trying to get back into it and how things have changed! Having watched your review and one other I saw yesterday I now understand how you are meant to use these, so I will give them a try . I now know why I did not like them and it was because I did not understand how to use them. Out of curiosity I looked at how much I paid for them in 2015 on Amazon (I am in the UK) and how much they are now...glad I purchased them when I did because I would have to think hard about paying out for what they cost now.
I love the color catalog! This was a great reminder of all the benefits.💖
I love inktense but a lot of people don't get on with them. They Do take a bit of water to activate properly, especially if you want to layer colours over them. If you don't use enough water, you will reactivate the layer underneath and end up with a muddy mess. On colouring books you are limited to how much water you can use but a little bit of these pencils goes a long way. Light layers work best and go from light to dark. Clean your brush off again before going in and work slowly. You can then go over your dark areas with the pencil, using a light hand to help build up your shade. You can go over with water again but you need to be careful not to pull the colour through to your lighter areas. Clean your brush off regularly.
You can also pick colour off the pencil nib directly with your brush.
I find that these don't work so well on larger areas in colouring books because you can't use enough water without the page buckling. I wouldn't use them for backgrounds like in this video.
They are very hardy though - my set looks like they've hardly been used - I've had them about 4 years now and I use them quite often.
Sarah, Could you please do another video(s) on the Derwent Inktense Pencils? I would love to see additional techniques, tips, and tricks these pencils provide. I love using these pencils in my card making and would love to do more art work using them.
Thank you for all your lovely videos! I love them and learn many little tips!
This comment is 8 months old and I'm hoping for the same thing. Do you know if she made any other videos using the inktense? I know other youtubers have videos on them but Sarah is my favorite to watch!
Very nice first try! Lisa at Lachri Fine Art uses these in several videos. Her work is featured on the tin.
I love inktense! My favorite aspect of the derwent inktense is that you can ink over any color if you first allow the bottom color to thoroughly dry. The white, in block form, allows you to white over paint underneath and when its dry you can paint something else on top. The white will go over all the darkest of colors! Great for any mistakes.
Love those pencils. You can draw super light because once you add the water, those colors are gonna pop.
I'm Graphic Designer at Beginner steps and When I Search best videos about color knowledge then I see your videos and watch it finely I'm inspire your video and I hope I get more best color knowledge by you. Thanks & Best of Luck
Great video! I have a small set of 12 inktense I got as part of a multi-pencil haul and haven't tried them yet. I think I'll dig them out now.
It was also great to go on your journey of discovery with these pencils - especially since it must have been nerve-wracking when you are filming and want everything right. Tthe experience was more valuable for all of us to learn together. Thanks!
Last bit - I loved your little art critic! I can tell he's been around this for a while. He's so adorable and well spoken! :-)
He’s only recently learnt the word “details” because he started school this year and his art teacher asks him to “add more details” to his drawings. He loves using big words! He always makes me smile with his cute voice and extensive vocabulary for his age (5)
@@SarahRenaeClark 🙂
the color gradient blending was SUPER SATISFYING to watch.
watching your videos! ery informative.thanks
When I started adult coloring about 3 years ago. This set of 72, was my first set of pencils for coloring :) That's because I bought them about 7 years ago for cardmaking. My very first coloring pages were done in these :) And I fell in love with them immediately. Fast forward a few years, my pencil collection has grown by leaps and bounds, but I still go back to my first love
You showed no fear and that was inspirational!
Hello Sarah! I usually have to put down the colors I want first then activate with water because the intense do dry very quickly. Love you video.
I loved these pencils its so bright and vibrant
Luv this tutorial! One of my favourite coz I have Inktense pencils but just didn’t know how I could use them 😉
This turned out beautifully! I really enjoyed the textured background :)
I love it. I didn't know this pencils but I'm looking forward to try them in future.
I only recently got interested in colored pencils, and I regret not having gotten started sooner; this is so much fun!! However I've been a fan of classic-style fountain pens and stationery for pen pal letters for quite a while now. I can tell you that inks for fountain pens are mainly water & dye (along with a few other things), unlike the stuff used in modern pens. I wonder if these Derwent pens are based on something similar.
Hello Sarah, I am ur big fan, luv ur vids ❤️, and Sarah very happy to see u have 20k subs now cause it was in 19k for the past week and to my surprise I checked it yesterday it was 19,800 but now it's 20k so yeah... Very happy to see that, #notmissinganyvids every week, and ZAC IS VERY CUTE 🤩🤩, ur finished colouring page was also soooo good.
Thank you! I definitely had to include Zac after such an adorable comment!
Hey Sarah I just now calculated a thing for this channel to reach 100k subs, if we get 765 each day it will be possible to reach 100k before July 31st which is 131 days from today !!! And this is my kind request to u, pls make youtube shorts everyday like this or 4-5 times in a week and make a regular vid 2 times a week, (this vid has reached 5k views but just 500 subs have increased this is the saddest part )LUV U SARAH ❤️❤️
Great job Sara! This reminded me of a trip we took to Australia from Texas & the first few minutes we were in the water there I was stung by a jelly fish! Thank goodness it wasn’t a Box jellyfish or our trip really would have been a disaster! Thanks for all you do!
Oh no!!
I think adding the blue background, I would have used the pencil to paper where you can control the area to color and all you have to do is add water. In my humble opinion ❤
Ooooo I want to try gauche with the Inktense pencils!! Thank you for sharing, you have given me some ideas to try!!!
The Derwent Inktense artwork branding is done by another UA-cam Artist: Lachri Fine Art. She created the dolphin artwork for the pencil tins and the turtle artwork for the Inktense blocks. You can even watch her paint them on her channel. ;0) Glad you got the newer set!
Yeah she's probably the most technically skilled artist on youtube across a variety of mediums. IDK why her view count has tanked lately unless she's not appeasing the UA-cam algorithm gods lol.
My favorite method for using those pencils is to use a wet brush to the pencil to the brush rather than to the paper but it’s harder to control your color values like you discussed at the beginning. But it’s my preferred method.
I had that happen with my Derwent Lightfast. I spoke with Amazon as well and they sent me a new set right away and didn't have to pay for it! Amazon is great for stuff like that (we live out of town so it takes a bit to drive to town!) Your video is so informative! I got the Intkense this week too, and this helps me to see what I can do with them!
Yes Amazon are usually pretty good with returns for damaged stock. I’ve never had an issue getting a replacement
I feel your pain with the damage item. Amazon is not doing a good job when they pack and mailed these pencils off. I had a similiar problem where just as you, the pencils were packed in a padded envelope???!!! Huh?? Well I received my envelope empty. What are they thinking?? Then they send a small product that is the size of my hand in a box without any packaging but products that do need support they mail out in an envelope. I do love my Amazon but they really have to look into how they packed and shipped products. It is just a matter of the upper tier needs to look at the procedure in their distribution centers.
Wonderful jellyfish my friend.. lovely colors shines underwater.
Thank You For Sharing & For Doing All The Hard Work So That We Learn & Benefit From This! 👍💜❤💖
What is this magic inktense ?! Wow thanks for sharing . I make coloring books, but I rarely get to colour 😞 I’ll def give a try!
6:18 2020 is the darkest colour because it was the darkest year
So true💀💀
Thank you!! Many years ago, I bought the “old” range you bought. But I had no idea how to use them properly. While intense and blendable on the page they just didn’t pop for me, and I really regretted the colour choices. So dark and the colour palette seemed so restricted. But WOW!was I wrong!! I ended up buying the Prismacolour set a week ago…. Soooo much easier for a beginner… but I have used them to burnish some of my intense 🤦♀️😂😂 so I won’t be able to go back and see how to really use the inktense in the old pages… happy to experiment with new pages now that I have some idea what to do to bring out the colours !!
Beautifully done, I bought the 24 set first loved them and bought the big set they are going to last forever, then recently I bought 24 Inktense blocks and now I want more of them 🤗🤗 because they are so easy to use. But you can also use a wet brush on the pencil to get the same effect.
I need the Mickey on your table! Omg it's amazing!!!!! Love the video too.. beautiful!
I’m waiting impatiently for my 120 set to be delivered today 🎉🎉
watching from Phiippines!
Derwent Inktense do take some getting used to, I found it's no good trying to cover a large area quickly, you do need to use small consistent pencil stokes when laying down the colour, too big pencil marks and they won't blend out properly, and many layers even of the same colour once it's dry go over it again. I also prefer a waterbrush as you have more control on the amount of water. Derwent also have a Inktense paint pan set, max number of colours 24, a good option for a background using them to put down the initial layer and then use the pencils on top. I love using Inktense but it's not always easy and that's just down to practise, Lindy
These types of water-soluable pencils will probably work the best on watercolor paper, since watercolor paper is actually designed to absorb water, so that washes can dry more evenly and so that the color turns out less blotchy and gross. Of course that only really works with higher quality watercolor papers (cheap cellulose paper is the absolute hot garbage, 100% cotton is the way to go)... My point is, these types of pencils probably aren't great for coloring pages (unless it's like a watercolor coloring page, or if you transfer an image you're like to color onto some nicer paper), I think they're more suitable for illustrating from scratch
Peta Hewitt uses them in a book she loves. It is worth watching her techniques.
I just received my 72 tin this week I love them xxx
xD my tin, with the peacock, came bent too. I couldnt change it, because my husband got it for me while he was working on Canada, and making a return from Argentina was a hassle. I pretty much hated them the first time I tried them, specially because it was hard to tell the color at a glance since leads are very dark. But then, I started to use them undirectly, lifting color from tips and watering it down on a palette or coloring super light, activating with water and waititng for it to dry before going further (not strange for me since I color with colored inks xD since I was 16 and I'm in my 4o's now). And they are kinda great I have to say ^_^ Great video Renee, I love your content and you are adorable. I watch art videos during anxiety nights to try to ease my mind, and your channel is among the ones I watch, thank you!.
I love my inktense pencils but I find they are easier to work with with an aqua brush, one that holds water in the barrel of the brush.
Nice! I like how you added the details at the end. You were so brave to do this on camera as your first go at these. There is a definite learning curve to them, but there is nothing else out there like them. :)
I love Inktense pencils! I bought these when I started mixed media, and fell in love with them. I just used them to draw and paint out with water brush on a apron for my daughter. They dry permanently and can be washed on the fabric! Can you please tell me what kind of paint pens you used? Thank you so much for sharing Sarah! 🥰💜💜
These were from Life of Colour
Love your page!
You are now my absolute goto for learning about pencils! I’ve been using Faber Castell Albrect Durer watercolour pencils for about 5 years and I love them!
But I’m very keen to learn more about the intense range and I knew that *you* would be the lovely lady to help me!
I’ve discovered so much just by watching your channel 🥰
I recently finished a piece using my Ohuhu as a base and adding pencil on top. It gives such amazing depth to my art!
I’m so happy I found you 🎨💜🤗
This turned out beautiful I like my inktense pencils I just have a small set I'm saving to get your catalogs first tyfs
Loved, loved, loved this videos. Thank you for sharing!
Good thing you got them replaced. I was disappointed when they sent mine in a bag too. I love the new tins as they were designed by Lisa Lachri here on youtube. I do love these pencils too. They are so different, from my watercolor pencils, such a neat medium. I have the 36 set, and they are beautiful. I also have the inktense pans and they are very nice too. I have the 24 set and all but one of them is highly light fast as well.
Alice Cole from UA-cam channel “HulloAlice” was a featured artist in a Scrawlrbox where she used the Iinktense blocks! You might give her a look see and adopt some of her techniques. Alice is an amazing artist who excels in mixed media and traditional watercolor paintings too! I have a small selection of Inktense pencils and the blocks that came in the Scrawlrbox of Alice’s. I thought you did a very nice job with the pencils, especially for your first time! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I look forward to watching your next video. Please take care, be safe and enjoy your day!
I love how you take us through your process. The page turned out wonderful so it was worth all your extra effort. thank you! 😊
I have them, and I love it!! I use in my magical city coloring book...
This is soo cool soo pretty
I see so many that have many whips. I believe you do improve the more you practice. I I always finish a picture.
I'm new @ Inktense as well. Super fun medium. It was a helpful video, thanks.
I love using Water tank brushes with watercolor pencils, it helps with the watercontrol. When I need more water, I just squeeze lightly and can continue to distribute the color without losing Pigment when I dip the brush back into the water. When my picture dries I add colored pencil and deepen the shadows and add details as the Derwent pencils have more often than not the same colors in the different sets. Thank you for your videos!
I am sorry about the damage to your expensive purchase. This brings the subject of Amazon's poor packaging of art supplies. I have contacted them numerous times about sending pencils in a plastic bag. There is no excuse for a lack of caring about our purchases coming damaged.
If you use the caran d'ache plastic pallet the inktense can be reactivated, rather than drying out on the tracing paper. The inktense travel pan sets have a couple of different colours such as mango and racing green :)
Very helpful, thank you!
thats exactly what i use too
So happy you reviewed the inktense pencils. I've been very enamored with them and intended on purchasing them. Your video just made me want them even more. 😃💖
Loved this video. I splashed out and bought the full set in the wooden box about 8 months ago and oh my they are a thing of beauty 💕 but I need to use them more! And I want to learn bubbles!!
Temi Danso has a few excellent videos about how to draw bubbles. :)
Thank you! I know how frustrating it can be to receive damaged goods, even if only the packaging. Please just try to stay healthy!
I'm gonna make your day. Inktense also exists as watercolour palettes! They've got two palettes out now, #1 and #2. I've combined both in their own tin, and they're a really good opaque watercolour that doesn't reactivate with layering.
I’ve seen them! I’ve got them on my wishlist along with the blocks 😁
Hi Sarah, I have just received my Inktense pencils, I am so excited to get using them. Next on my list is your Colour Cubes 1 & 2. I love that you can print the sheets out and swatch them and that you have taken the time to colour match different pencil brands. Before I buy the full package, I would like to know what printer do you use please?
Fun Fact but I'm sure you knew about it by now. The cover art from the new set was created by another art UA-camr that I also watch, Lisa the Artist of Lachri Fine Art.
Yes! She has some great tutorials too
I loved your picture great colours
a coupe of genius toward the end
Thanks I really needed derwent pencils review. Thanks a lot. And thanks for detailed video.
I got 3 Inktense pencils as a sample and am really eager to try them properly. Fun seeing your adorable son in this video!
Omg. They're 54% off right now! 👀 I'm getting them!
Very cool pencils, but very expensive!
Thank you Sarah for you review! Really like it. I have the Inktense blocks and they are a little chalky if you apply it too dark or in more layers. I prefer the ones that come in the Pan Set that are in the same format of watercolour but are with Inktense.
Please remember to review the Mont Marte Premium 72 piece colour pencil and Mont Marte Premium Watercolour pencil 72 piece sets soon. I would really appreciate that.
It's so good. It teaches us many things. Though pencils are expensive. But the method is so good. I will try it.
These work great with an alcohol blender on more delicate paper. I’m a big fan of underpainting with these.
I’m definitely keen to try this! I have a few alcohol blender pens around
wow! never thought of that. i have the full set of pencils and blocks. i have used paintbrushes, the waterbrushes, also i have used the caran d'ache pallete aquarelle(has a rough side). cant wait til tomorrow to try with alcohol blender. tyvm 🙂🥰
Did I miss it? What paper are you using? Nice introductory video for these pencils! TFS
Paper is listed on the blog- it’s just a colored pencil paper, not really intended for wet mediums like this, but I wanted something I knew I could print on. I’ll try some other papers next time!
I don't use colouring books but this was useful. lt looks like these pencils are terrible for washes and large areas but great and vibrant for small areas. Great colours, though. I'm going to get some but thanks for demonstrating their limitations before I invested heavily. I think my Watercolour pencils are more flexible and forgiving than these. That paper's not holding up well with your attempts to fix this but you obviously know that. Useful video. Thanks. Subscribed. I'll have to try them on cotton water colour paper. They might blend and scrub better on that.
I think it turned out absolutely beautiful!!!
Always learning ^^
fun fact the picture on the case of the new packaging is Lachri's from Lachri's fine art. She has a youtube channel too!!!
Yes, I love her channel!
I’ve had these a couple months and I was really struggling with the wrong brush and technique. Than I got scared to use them bc I ruined a couple pages in a book 😬☹️. This has given me the courage to try them again. Crossing fingers. Bc I do love the way your jellyfish page turned out!!! 😍
Someone sending back a damaged tin is how I got mine nearly half priced.
Thank you I brought some but didn't know how to use them.
with the flicking of the white you could have just flickiked the brush off the tip over the paper instead of putting it on the brush and flicking. i find it easier and lesss messy tht way. I love what you did. These are a hard product to really get a handle on
Thanks for the tip!
Your son is the CUTEST!!!
I absolutely love Inktense pencils and blocks. It took me a bit of practice to find the best ways to use them but once you get the hang of it, they're great. They are also fantastic on fabric.
Please, how do you fix inktense blocks on fabrick? I tried them, but they are washing out. Thanks.
@@siag7107 I'm sorry, I don't know. I just use them for making textile art, so I don't wash anything which I make with them. They create an acrylic ink when used with water, so it's more fixed once dried than a watercolour product, but I don't think it would stand up to actual washing.
Albretch durer pencils are my favorite! ❤️
I'm a new subscriber. Love your videos and knowledge. :) Where you find the cute Mickey statue that you have in the background and what size tip/SET were the Life of Colour Paint Pens you were using?
Me: buys the 12 pk to try...🤦🏻♀️
Immediately Needs them All! 🤣
