  • Just before Christmas of 2018, I asked you guys on social media if you thought it was a good idea to perhaps go over and re-do some of my very first reviews. Lots of your thought it was a good idea and so I have decided to start with the Derwent Artists.
    The reason I wanted to do this was because, the video quality and sound in my recent reviews has improved significantly, as has the photography. Also, I have learnt so much more with the time I have spent researching and chatting to companies about their products, I felt I could add additional information. Nothing in the reviews will change regarding the first reviews, the only difference will be extra information. With the Derwent Artists review, I will be explaining the best way to use the pencils and get the most out of them. The tips and advice I offer in this video may not work for everyone, however I hope that you can all take something of value from the review.

I receive many emails and messages asking me how people can help support The Art Gear Guide, mainly I think due to the fact that I purchase all of the supplies myself, except those sent directly from companies kind enough to do so. I have decided to add a donations button to my site, however, I feel the best way to add such a campaign is as follows, all donations made will be used to purchase art products for review, however, all products purchased using donated funds, after they have been reviewed, will be used as giveaways to subscribers of the UA-cam Channel, the web site or any of the above social media platforms. This way I personally will not benefit from financial donations. I have set this channel and site up for my own enjoyment and not profitable gain. I feel with this support method, everyone wins but not in a financial.

    I would not exactly call myself an artist in the true sense of the word, however I absolutely love art as it has helped me immensely dealing with clinical depression due to my battle with constant chronic pain and disability. Follow the link to check out my own projects bit.ly/2qAa7BN
    Thank You
    Finally, thank you so much for all of your support, without all of you, this channel and The Art Gear Guide would simply not be the same.

    I’ve only ever used my Derwents on watercolour paper and the pigments have always been wonderful. I feel they are designed to be used on textured media, to be layered, and blended, as they do both so well. Derwent Artists are one of the few things that have improved during my lifetime - they are superior to my Cumberlands (c1975) in pigment and hardness. I also have Prismacolour and feel that they perform best on nearly smooth media, are too soft to layer well, blend nicely, but are designed to be applied heavily rather than in gradual layers. I mainly use coloured pencils as watercolours are used - slowly building up to create colour and form. So Derwent Artists suit my style. Isn’t it wonderful that we have a coloured pencil range to suit every style, application and media. It’s so interesting to watch you explore them all.

    Oooo I remember watching the first review haha. Really glad you're redoing some of your older video reviews, now that you have more experience and a better camera. I have the 72 set, though I'm not sure if it's just mine, but they feel unnaturally hard and takes a lot of pressure to get that pigment output I like. Then again, my set is pretty old so that might be why. Great addition, Harry :)

      Hello Lin my wonderful friend, I know what you mean about the hardness of the core, there is nothing wrong with your set and that is how they are. That is why they hold up so well on the likes of a pastelmat surface, a softer pencil core would just be eaten up in minutes, but the Artists hold up well on such a rough surface. However, they perform beautifully on the Cotton paper Strathmore 500 Series, I am not sure what the science is behind the cotton paper and why pencils perform so well on it, but they do. I will have to research this and perhaps get back in touch with my contact at Strathmore.

    Great review, and this has helped me learn more about these pencils. I have a large collection of Derwent pencils, and have been considering purchasing this set for a long time. I do not draw, but I color in books with many different types of paper, so I always can find a book that works well with my pencil collection. Thank you for the review!
    I also want to say that the new videos look fantastic!

    Thank you for re-doing this review and thank you for explaining people the difference between hard and soft pencils. I have talked to a lot of people who are hating on theese pencils because they hope for the same colour pay out as say prismacolor pencils. But there is just too much a difference between how you use a very hard and a very soft pencil. I got this set and they are some of my favorites.

    Many many people don't know or even question themselves about the importamce of GOOD PAPER for their pencils... EVERY single type of pencils PRETENDS the RIGHT PAPER and the RIGHT TECHNIQUE. It's a bit like in photography: the lenses are important just as the camera model you are using (and in some cases much, much more). They buy them, use them generically in the way they have always used colored pencils, on the same paper they've used for centuries, maybe on a crappy or supersmooth coloring book paper and then they shout "ThEy aRe nOt gOoD PeNcIls, NoT WorTh tHe pRiCe!1!1!1!1".
    The artists are made for LAYERING, if you want a pencils that gives you supersaturated colours at the first stroke on printer paper, then go buy the Polychromos or the Prismacolor. They want the best pencils in the world but keep using them like they were at primary school.

    I LOVE my Derwent Artists, I have the 72 set, I’ve loved them since childhood ...I didn’t even think about the ‘hard core’ ‘ soft core’ thing, to me they are just beautiful ...until I recently got the 36 tin of Derwent Coloursoft pencils😁👍 (thanks to your review🙂) Now I have two types of Derwent colour pencil that I love👌

      Hi Siobhan, then you and I are in the same club, it is a small club, but I absolutely adore the Derwent Artists. I really hate to do this to you, but if you love the Artist and Coloursoft, then you will also love the ProColour. The ProColour lies right in the middle of the Artist and Coloursoft in terms of hardness and softness of the core. Not quite as hard as the Artist and not quite as soft as the Coloursoft. And then there is the Lightfast which is a completely different pencil altogether. But if you do want to try the ProColour and Lightfast, especially the Lightfast because of your love the Artist and them being very very different pencils, just buy a couple open stock. I wouldn’t get a full set in case you don’t enjoy them and you will have wasted money.
      I am pretty confident in you loving the ProColour based on what you like, but just to be safe buy a few of those open stock as well. The entire point of my channel is to hopefully prevent people from buying products they won’t enjoy or just don’t like and waste their hard earned money. I am not a very well off persona at all because of my disability and that is why saving people from wasting their money is so important to money. I am not money oriented, far from out, but it is not nice living without it either lol. That is another reason why I will never put my reviews on a platform such as Patreon, asking people to pay for a service I am providing to save them money doesn’t make sense. Thank you so much for your comment and for your support, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.

    I am excited to get a set of these. I am looking to buy a good all around set, I don't need to get stuck with 30 or 40 pencils across two brands that are close in color and after studying color charts from prisma, pablo, and derwent, I decided on Derwent artist. The set looks more balanced across the whole spectrum. Prisma was very heavy in the red spectrum and had a bunch of high chrome orange colors that I probably would never use as I do a lot of pet portraits. I almost got Pablo because people like the way they layer and blend but when I saw comparison charts I felt some of the colors were too close together and there were gaps in the spectrum. The only reason I kept circling back to Pablo was because Derwent Artists didn't have as many reviews. Glad I found your review, I love pastelMat so I think I will give them a try.

    I have vintage derwent artist pencils( all the barrel is coloured) and I find thrm very creamy and opaque, almost like a hard version of prismacolor. But then I tried a 24set of procolours and I found them less creamy, less opaque and definitely harder..I am curious to know if these modern derwent artists are so different from thr vintage ones since you describe them as being transluscent...

    FYI Harry, OMS works well with both wax and oil based pencils. Due to the oil pencils being a harder lead, it can take more layers to get the colour saturation you want, but that's true for them regardless of what method of blending you use. Lisa Clough at Lachri fine art uses it with Derwent, Caran D'Ache Luminance, and Faber Castell Polychromos and others and it blends all of them nicely.

    I had been planning for purchasing derwent 120 pencils since a long time and had already placed my order. But I am more confident now as how they would turn out. I am a huge fan of strathmore and got series 400 toned paper recently from London But they are not available here in paper in pakistan. That's troubling me a little bit. You are so right Harry, the paper have more to say, then many realizes.
    When I first got a set of Artist's, I actually ended up selling them. :D This is of course some years back, and I was just starting with pencils. But now I know more about pencils in general, and know that all pencils might be good pencils, depending on the paper.
    Good review Harry :D
    Btw I hope you father is recovering as planned.

      Thank you so much May and my Dad is doing much better thank you so much for asking. I genuinely think that so many of you wonderful people prayed for him and kept him in your thoughts was part of the reason he has recovered so well.
      I totally agree with you May, which was the reason I have to re-do some of my first reviews. The surface on which the pencils are used is so vital as important as the pencils themselves. Don’t get me wrong, there are some pencils that look amazing on any surface but there are others that require a certain paper type to hone the best performance.

    I just tried to use the Clairefontaine Pastelmat with my Derwent Artists / Studio pencils and that works insanely well. You can layer amist endlessly on it. I know it is extremely expensive, but when it goes on sale one can make a bargain at 40%-50% off on the Pastelmat. I always stock up on it then.
    I noticed that the Derwent Lifhtfast Paper does not seem to work at all though with the Artist / Studio pencils. I keep little scraps of that for trial swatches.
    Will gladly try it on Strathmore 500 paper. Do you use the Bristol or Mixed Media one? I really love your diligent reviews and often "consult" with you before buying something. Thank you for all the work you put into your great channel.❤

    There's something odd going on with the video, when the swatches are further from the camera they are truer to the colour and when you have the close up they look brighter and very different. I do have a set of these and agree with what you say about them. They work especially well on pastel Matt and are great for detail on it. I've also found that some of the colours have stronger pigment than others and they have a great range of yellows as well beautiful subtle pastels and greyed tones. I remember you answering my question about the type of paper to use with them and your advice has held true not just for these pencils but other brands I have used. I'd really appreciate you reviewing different types of paper too. Really enjoyed the review lots of good information in it.

    Oooooh. Pastel paper,brilliant, i have ot used m on that yet, i own the canson mi teintes. Im kind of add paperwise; im not one to switch them to a different product fast, wich is really stupid. I knew the core of these was kindof hard, it is a trademark for this particular set, but blending gave me some newbe starter issues. So i put them aside for a while. While i own some bristol vellum smooth, that was probably not the best choise for this pencil. Absolutely brilliant, i will try that out for a test today. Next set I'll go for a more soft oil core; but at least I can see if paper for pastel can solve my issues.

    Thankyou so much for doing this again Harry, I’ve put this set on my wish list lol, I’ve just ordered the comp,etc set of drawing pencils so that is enough for this month. I don’t think you c@n compare the colours with other brands, Derwent co,our in any of their ranges are pretty unique as far as I c@n see and I love the subtlety in the artists ones, I know I will definitely be getting this set in the not too distant future. I’m fortunate that the arthritis is predominately in my left hand, but as I love to layer anyway this isn’t a huge problem for me you need a light hand for that. A good review, I couldn’t bear to use my pencils on pastelmat because of the way it eats up the pencils but at least it will save me from having to buy the blending stuff lol

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  5 років тому

      Hi Margaret you are going to love the Derwent Drawing set, they are the most unique set of pigments I have ever found in a set of pencils. I spoke to the CEO of Derwent when they reopened the Museum about a year ago and I asked him a few sneaky questions. One of the questions was if they had plans to increase the set size of the Derwent Drawing range, but I can't tell you yet what the answer was.
      As for the pastelmat, I would never use my Luminance, Derwent Lightfast pencils, Derwent Drawing or Prismacolor on pastelmat because they would disappear in the blink of an eye. But because the Derwent Artists is such a robust core, they hold up remarkably well, I was really surprised at just how well they held up.

      The Art Gear Guide Harry that was what attracted me with the Derwent drawing set, I want to use them for the background of the swallowtail butterfly, I like the small set I have but thought it was time to get the full set. Ooh you are naughty teasing me like this, but I’m patient and can wait for a big reveal lol. Mean2hike I’m switching my inktense and graphitint onto watercolour paper, I’ve got an A4 ring binder @nd will put the swatches in there in the pockets you can get. I have a lot of photographs and am going to keep them in there as well. This is me trying to be tidy and organised lol, in the one for the butterfly I’ve swatched the colours I’m going to be using for it on the strathmore 500 Bristol vellum, I will do the same 2hen I pick the Derwent drawing ones out that I’m going to use for this drawing, I’m quite proud of myself lol, this is me pretending to be a real artist !

    The first video of yours I watched was on these pencils. I was still trying to decide on which full set of pencils I was going to buy as a starter set (I went for the Polychromos but Derwent Artists were a close runner-up.) These videos were very influential, and remain so for me.

      OMS works on both oil and wax based pencils but the effect is different. Although I personally find the difference between brands has more bearing on the effectiveness (or not) of OMS/Pencilblend than whether or not a pencil is wax or oil based.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  5 років тому

      I think as a starter set you made the right choice with the Polychromos, but as I mentioned in the video, once you find the right surface the Derwent Artist pencils work beautifully, but it is because of this that I would say the Artists are maybe for a more seasoned colored pencil artist, which I am sure you are now, what with the use of those gorgeous Polychromos. Thank you so much for your input.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  10 місяців тому

      Hi Barbara you are absolutely right, I mentioned in the video that the paper I preferred most to use with the Derwent Artist is the Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Plate.
      However this is the paper I personally found to bring the best out of the Artist, but this paper may not deliver the same results for other artists. We all use Colored pencils in a different way, some people prefer to use light layers, some more heavy handed, some prefer to use OMS etc. The Strathmore 500 series Bristol Plate paper is really expensive and the last thing I want to do, is recommend such a paper that may not deliver the same the results because of the reasons mentioned above.
      Two other papers that also work well with the techniques I use are the Derwent Lightfast Paper and Fabriano Artistico Extra White Hot Pressed Paper. Again both papers are very expensive and so I urge against caution buying large blocks of these papers and try to buy samples or single sheets before spending a lot of money on a paper you may not like.
      Thank you so much for your support I really appreciate it.

    Thank you very much for the review and for the recommendation regarding the type of paper to use.
    A couple of weeks ago, I received as a gift from a relative a box of 120 that was in his family for several years. I know it is an older edition because it also says "England" and not "Made in Britain".
    In spite of the fact that the pencils, as I was told, and as they also look at the size and condition of the lead, were never used, looking at each of the pencils I notice some problems: many have lost the golden colour of the identification of each pencil, several have problems of discoloration of the blue-green varnish outside of the pencils and some have cracked varnish especially in the final part that indicates the colour of each pencil...
    So my question is what could have happened? Is it just the passage of time? or were they badly stored (the wooden box is in perfect condition)?
    Could this have affected the quality of the lead?
    If you or anyone can give me some guidance I would be very grateful.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  9 місяців тому +1

      I just need to ask a few more questions to help or just one question really. You mention about the paint on the pencil barrel, don’t worry too much about this as it will not affect the outcome of the core. The discolouration and cracking could simply be environment, cold or damp etc. The fact the box is still in good condition is strange as if the barrel colouration etc has been effected by environmental issues, the book should have experienced something, however it does also depend on the wood they used back then.
      With regards to the core of the pencils, give them all a good sharpen, even if they are already sharp, break the core and resharpen. Sometimes, mould can grow on certain pigments, some pigments are more susceptible to mould than others. Giving the cores a sharpen should remove any external mould that could have grown.
      Once you have done this test them on some paper, set to the side any that you feel don’t work.
      If you could take a photo of them and email them to me I might be able to help you a bit better. If you can take a photo of the pencils before you sharpen them, after you sharpen them and your swatch results if you can. My email address is theartgearguide@gmail.com

      Thank you very much for your reply, I will send you some photos by e-mail.
      I am also struck by the fact that the wooden box is in such good condition, as are the protective sponges and the booklet, there is no sign of humidity, nor of extreme heat.
      Regarding the mines, they seem to be in good condition, some of them have the mould you mentioned and of course, if you sharpen them, it will disappear. Regarding the use before and after sharpening, I notice an improvement after sharpening: the mine, while still hard, feels less dry (I don't know if you can see it well in the photos I send you). @@TheArtGearGuide

      Yeah the Derwent Artist pencil has to be used on decent paper to achieve good results, even if you try them on printer paper you will think “oh my goodness these pencils are terrible”. But once you use a good quality paper like the Fabriano Artistico, Derwent Lightfast Paper or Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Plate, any of these papers will completely transform the Derwent Artist pencil. This also applies to the way you use them, the Derwent Artist in my opinion achieves the best results by applying many light layers. I hope you enjoy your set

      I think you will love them but remember the paper you use is important with these. The colour selection in the 120 is amazing

    I hope you can help me out here, but how would you say do they compare to the Prismacolor Verithin? I heard the Derwent Artists pencils are quite hard so I hoped they would be good to use for outlining and delicate work? Do you think that will work out?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 роки тому +1

      Hi There, thank you so much for your question. The Derwent Artists are indeed a really hard pencil but I don’t think they would be good the job you want to use them for. Although the Derwent Artists have a really nice hard core, they are not very pigmented which is why they are best use in a layering technique.
      If you can wait for about six hours I will test the pencils and look through my notes to see which pencils would best fit the job you want. I am actually in bed at the minute and can’t for the life of me think off the top of my head as to which pencil would be best for you.

      @@TheArtGearGuide Thanks for that clarification on the Derwent Artist Harry!I really appreciate you helping me out!
      To specify my needs in a colored pencil I must tell you that I use them for three different things:
      sketching, adding depth and detail to coloring (mixed media, never just cp alone), and outlining.
      I have in fact bought Prismacolor Verithin for doing outlines, but I am not very content with their quality. They are scratchy and the color payoff is too weak for me.
      For sketching I only ever use Prismacolor Col-Erase and I LOVE those, but like the Verithin, I feel like they give me too little pigment to use them for outlines, while they are also too soft.
      I'm doing comic/manga illustrations, usually mixed media with copics or watercolour first, last step adding depth and final touches with colored pencils.
      For this I use the CdA Pablo which I adore. While they are okay for outlines (vibrant) I still think they are a tad too soft for it.
      Polychromos are a no-no from me, I just dislike the feeling when laying down color with them. Unbelievable, I know right? 😂 They also significantly lack good portrait colors I'd need.
      My newest colored pencils are now Arteza, which are again, too soft.
      So really, while I have found my perfect fit for sketching and coloring, I am still looking for a "hard" colored pencil with strong/good color payoff for outlines.
      And of course, for the other two I am still open for substitutes or additions to my Pablos/Col-Erase, which is why I'll be getting some samples of Derwent Procolour, Coloursoft, Lightfast and CdA Luminance next month.
      Well, tbh, I got allmost all the well or better known brands you also reviewed on your channel, in my shopping cart ready to go 😅
      I'd still be very glad for some advice on what might work best for me.
      Thank you very much and sorry for so much text :')

      M&R metal sharpener. Will fit. It has two hole. (Hand held)
      The TGal is good fits snugg but works. (Hand held)
      For hand crank DAHLE 133 is nice.
      I’m sorry I don’t own a electric so I can’t help with that. Good luck.

    Cartridge sketch pad paper has worked very nicely for me in the past with my 36 set of Artists pencils. They are around 30 years old now, and still good (I didn't use them for 20 years). Self-coloured barrels in those days. I found they go down well on some papers as you say. I am actually using them this week. There are quite a few of them in my Pencil Buddy at this minute. They have lovely colours. I'd love a big set.

      Are they the pencils with "rexel cumberland" and "made in britain" written on them? I see many of these artists are still in art stores and I have ever womdered if they were a newer or an older serie, and the differences with the racing green ones as well

    Derwent Artists or Staedtler Ergosoft?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 роки тому +2

      They are both very very different pencils but if it was my choice Derwent Artist. The Ergo are nice pencils, soft core, work well in adult colouring books, but not a huge selection of Color. The artist have 120 pigments total, a much harder core and so better if you are the type of pencil artist that likes to layer.
      Hope this has helped you out a wee bit. Thank you so much for your support

    Derwent is owned by the Acco Brands Corporation, an American company.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  5 років тому +4

      Acco Brands Corporation are an investment company and you are right with regards the connection to Derwent, However, all of Derwent's pencils are made in England, Keswick in the Lake District to be precise, the graphite is mined locally in Borrowdale I believe as it has been since Derwent started back in 1832. The only thing American about the company is the money invested, the products themselves are British, for the time being anyway, I am sure one day, like all companies, the work will be out sourced to somewhere else and products sourced from other areas also, I hope I am wrong about this however.

    Open stock for these colorsoft ,studio,pro or lightfast isn't available here. So how to deal with. They are only available in tin boxes and the shopkeeper doesn't let me try out lol. Its ironical. What would you suggest.

    • @TheArtGearGuide

      The only thing I can suggest is for you to try online. Most people get their open stock supplies online, I live in the UK, in a pretty big City but there is no walk in store that I can go to and buy them open stock. So online is definitely the best way to go.
