Garden Office Build | Foundations & Timber Frame | EP1

- When covid lockdown kicked in, I started working from home full time and immediately began dreaming of having my own space rather than working from the dining room table. After following lots of other people's UA-cam videos on garden rooms/workshops/offices, I decided to have a crack myself.
In this video we’re focussing on the foundations and the timber frame. We were lucky enough to find an existing concrete slab where we were planning to put the garden office but still had to add some extra footings at the front. The timber frame was made using 2x4 C24 timber.
I’m not a builder or professional tradesmen so I’m sure I’ve made many mistakes along the way but hopefully this series is interesting and shows what someone with very little experience can do with the help of UA-cam.

This is great thank you. I’m taking on an existing concrete base and extending by a metre. I’m actually building on the site of an existing concrete shed. I’m having because of neighbours leave three sides of the existing walls, add a timber structure to the inside and insulate from there. In theory using the concrete walls as cladding. Fingers crossed I’ll be starting in April 2023!
Amazing video
I am now feeling more confidence for a similar in rear garden
Only thing - I would put ground membrane under the floor frame, so the moisture from ground doesn't affect timber joists.
and weed suppression over the soil
Agreed!
Could do without the muzak
This is great. I am just planning my build. What kind of paving slabs did you use beneath the frame? Worries that the ones I have seen would break when drilled into!
Hi Leia, we just used normal paving slabs but if it's something you're concerned about then you can get concrete or heavy duty paving slabs. However, if I was doing this again I'd consider something thicker like a concrete block to allow for more airflow. Good luck with your build!
@@richclifford4571 thanks. It’s hard isn’t it, trying to get it all to fit under the height restrictions!!
@@leiamonsoon4454 definitely! I'm 6ft2 and was really worried about the finished inside height but if it makes you feel any better, there's plenty of room and it doesn't feel low.
This is great, looking back would you have done anything differently?
Thanks! Honestly, nothing major. I learnt that I don't like plastering so I'd look to pay a plasterer next time!
Great video. Looking really nice!
what are the dimentions of the garden office?
Thanks! It's 3.2m x 4m
Living in a terrace house period isn’t ideal at all when it comes to building With the limited amount of space it be best to just buy one cause your creative ability is very limited in that small space. But overall it’s nice to see that hasn’t stopped you.
Thanks Alfred! You're right, building a garden office in a terrace house wasn't ideal (lots of moving materials through the house) but if I could go back in time I'd still build rather than buy. The main reason for this is that I was able to maximise the space I had. I could build right up to the fence lines, which for me was about 3.2m, rather than buying something off the shelf which would have dimensions that didn't perfectly fit my space. The other reason is that building it myself saved me a lot of money. Buying one would have cost 3x what I paid for my room. BUT it did take up a huge amount of my free time! So there are definitely lots of pros to buying one!
You have done a fantastic job Rich. How much did this cost to you Over all ?
Thanks! I'm just working out the cost for another video but I think just over £6k

Where did you buy the wall cladding from ? Can I get the link or the details please.
Sure, I got them from a company called Bushbury Cladding - www.bushburycladding.co.uk/
@@richclifford4571Does the 6k include materials please?
Was the timber 6 x2 or 4 x 2 please? Thanks
4x2 timber
thanks for the span link, turn down music a bit more while you are talking. message gets lost
Thank you for the tip! I definitely have lots to learn on the editing front!
@@richclifford4571 with good headphones it is very noticeable. Voice over music choices. My ol vids has same. Audio over video quality. Lots of peeps listen more than watch.
Using water to suppress dust when cutting with an electric angle grinder? What could possibly go wrong?????
😅 I like to live life on the edge
Ah lads I have a pair of black skinny jeans as well but not for working in loool
🤣🤷♂️
