- Join me on my journey to build the ultimate garden room. Will it be a gym? workshop? or really expensive shed??? who knows....
If you are thinking about building yourself a garden room then i will show you everything you need to know at every step.
In the first episode of this build series we concentrate on the foundations and preparing the wooden base. All very straight forward and anyone can do this with the right tools.
Follow along with your own project or just watch.
Why the twin wall pipe? Just use blocks, way easier.
Really different approach and a really nice natural person, uk base is nice also, not being disrespectful to our US or other's, but building reqs or different also supplies. I've watched all of this project to the end and have learnt some different approaches on the way. Peace ✌️
Interesting foundation idea David. Looks good. We have a slightly sloping site circa 500mm from one side to other. Any suggestions?
Yeah same situation for us in South Wales.. great videos David just clicked them today. . Appreciate your advice on said question 👍😊
I have watched SO MANY videos on this whole concrete pile approach.. I dont want a concrete slab as I want my timber frame off the ground.. great video.. i am doing exactly this mate, good work, great video.. my ONLY question, is there a need to put any hardcore at the bottom of each pipe before the concrete? oh I lied, one more question.. FROST LINE, are you in the UK? is 500mm deep enough for this? in the UK its 450mm right??
No joist hangers needed? :O
Nice video, like the plastic tube idea, on the dig out idea, will that not be like a small pond when its rains ? Why not just install the tubes sticking up 100mm from grade . were you concerned about height ?
Now I know where Liam got the idea!
Awesome job, enjoying your vids and going to start something similar soon. Where did you get your pipe/duct from?
Hi Scott, The local builders merchants had it. Its 150mm Twin wall ducting. Good Luck.
Hi - how did you calculate the numbers of piers needed? I think you’re using 6x2 which is same as what I plan to use. Span tables say 3m span for C16 at 450mm centres. My building is 3.6m depth so I’m thinking a centre pier will be needed but surely I won’t need that on every joist?! Thanks for any advice
Great job, I will be building a 5 x 3.4m office based on your ideas. Just a bit confused with the base timber frame size. You said 100 x 50 in one of your replies but in the video you said 150 x 50. If using 100 x 50 would you not need to use joist hangers for the Kingspan? Cheers mate- keep up the good work!
Thanks for sharing. I'm curious to know how you dug the holes. Different people have different soils, some gravelly, some clay. I'd be tempted to use an Auger machine to dig cleanly down straight.
Also, how did you set out the holes and footings? I think people would need to know how to square things up. I would have raised the foundations another 200mm at least to be well above the ground level. I'd also use bigger pipes for little extra cost in materials but stronger foundations
Can I ask what spacing you used for the concrete pads and the joists?
Great videos, easy to follow and totally practical. Could you just let me know what distances you used between the duct piers?
Many thanks
I am doing a similar project and inspired to give your idea ago, but can't find anywhere that sells pipe like yours. what UK distributor did you use ?
Ian, i just gt it from the local builders merchant. Its a 150mm twin wall duct. Most should supply it. Good luck
Your videos have been invaluable. I’m struggling to find twinwall ducting locally, could I use pvc piping?
I guess you could as its really only acting as a shutter but im no expert and I have used the ducting method before and it worked pretty well.
Great video. Really want to try this myself
Great job. I’m so impressed with the whole thing. And all your family helping out is so cool. (as a separated dad I’m envious) What a great experience for you all.
Can you explain how you levelled the concrete bases? Did you have some technique to dig the holes?
Thanks.
Thanks for the nice comments, yeah we have worked super hard on this. I got the first one to the correct hight using the surrounding ground and then levelled each one from that. If you are doing it, i would say rent a laser level as they are much more accurate over bigger distances. I have one now and would have used it then.
Hello, I'm really interested in building a garden room like yours but with the aim of putting a snooker table in it. Do you think this foundation would take the weight of the table (roughly 1.2 ton)?
I will be using larger size timbers for the base (like 8x3") and locate the piles of concrete under the legs of the table but I'm worried if it will be enough?
Thanks
I think your best bet is to have a concrete base for weight like that.
I’m doing the same mate, snooker room in the garden. Did u make a decision on foundations?
Great idea. How do you advise getting all of these perfectly level? What method did you use and what would you recommend for a complete beginner? Thanks again
Spirit level from the first pile to the next and so on
Rent a laser level, i didn't but would do so if i do it again.
what grading of timber are you using for the foundation frame?
I've used 50mm x 100mm treated softwood.
Hello mate, may use this idea. Use a dryer mix though, it will be stronger and you won’t lose water out of the bottom which is causing them to slump
Nice!
Mate, why didn't you use joist hangers?
Didn't want to pay for them TBH
You did good but please less commentary and show more what you doing... Will be more interesting....
Thanks for the feedback
I love the commentary and think it was perfect just the way it was 👌
I'm not here for a quick Tik Tok style 'How to ' video.
