If one is respectful and calm they can be approached and sometimes even stroked or even held. They have a very different disposition from say a northern hawk owl...
I got to hold some saw-whet owls at an owl banding facility in Saskatchewan! It really amazed me how calm they are. I was also really impressed with just how far they can fly despite they small size, they are quite remarkable
“Hey there How’s it going... oh sure you want to look at my claws? Alright... you want to touch my whiskers? No problem. You want to see my wing? Ookay. So you shooting a documentary video or something there?....” yep... definitely a Canadian bird.
I heard a Saw-whet Friday morning 2-25-22. Central WI. Not knowing what it was I had to dig through owl sounds which was very educational. They don't just hoot.
Apparently they live in the high mountain forests of Appalachia as well. Not sure if that's year round or just in summer. They are mentioned on a sign at Mt. Mitchell
do not pet owls. petting them removes protective oils from their feathers. scratch their head, that they'd appreciate as it helps with itchy new feather they can't reach on their own :)
A little hefty to be a male, so probably a female. If that's a wild bird and not an education bird, I'm amazed at how she put up with you handling her. Fascinating video.
That's the safest and easiest hold to put a bird of prey in, it doesn't hurt them. They specifically use it because it doesn't risk damaging any flight or tail feathers, which are critical for flight.
That little guy is way too chill.
I'm on a northern saw-whet owl binge. They are so cute to watch.
Hear hear! Though mine is partly for research for something I’m writing. Yep, video after video of these cuties is the best research there is.
Me too lol
Love how when you turn his body, his head remains stationary. Nature's camera gimbals!
it was reminding me of a gyroscope when i noticed it
Our eyes do that
That's a very calm, trusting owl!

Weapons of mouse destruction. Nice.
Weaponse of "moess" destruction. Canadian accents never cease to baffle me.

Precious animal
Heard one calling last night in Alaska. Thank you for this video.
JessHag I love their call so much. Like the high note of a bamboo pan flute. Over and over and over...

Telling me they have soft feathers does NOT deter me from wanting to pet one. 😄
Their beaks and talons are far from soft if you try to pet them.

Winter in the lower great lakes?
It's dead of winter in central Illinois and we had one. Granted it may have been sick since it died. 😔

The owl has excellent hearing...so, won't your normal speech sound to him like you are shouting in his face ?
Have you heard their calls? They don't deafen themselves when hooting
Nice birds 💙I am new friend hear, please stay connected! 🤝👍
Poor owl haha
his wings are silent! Flap flap flap
Where to buy?
weapons of mouse destruction 😂😂
Frodo after leaving Greyhaven..
Is it a girl?
Why are you looking your fingers around it's legs?? Maybe you shouldn't be holding these birds if you're going to make them uncomfortable!!!

This is hands down the most annoying bird ever. For 2 nights this owl wouldn’t shut the fuck up
Stop banding these owls! You are Harming them!!
