We thought this was a baby owl, possibly a great horned owl baby, but we found that this is a Northern Saw Whet Owl, which is the smallest owl in North America. This was an adult owl but it was stunned after smashing into my window and was laying out in the cold snow and looked like it was going to die. The injured owl was rescued by my daughter who placed it into a box in the house, away from predatory cats that live outside (not my cats). Soon the owl recovered and flew across our living room to another window and then back to another window and landed right next to my cat. It is amazing that my cat was so confused that he did not even try to attack the owl. Our cat was absolutely bewildered and just sat there as the owl flapped its wings and landed ON the cat. We released the owl back to the outdoors and it landed on a table outside. Soon it flew off to a nearby coniferous tree where is sat safely and recovered the rest of the day.

What a cool experience and a great vlog to document it and share it. It reminds me of my family story. I was born last of 5 girls but when there were only about 3 of us existing, my parents also found a small owl. I always saw those pictures and wished so much I could have been around to experience it myself.
So one day, I was walking home from school. We just lived 2 yards away from school, and as I was walking beside our house, I bent down to the ground to pick something up. Well, my Dad was looking out the window and saw me. He came out and asked me what I was doing. I had to tell him so I said, "I was pretending I found an owl." He just grinned.

This is a cool video! I had a saw-whet owl for a few month too, way back after I graduated from college in 1973. I was coming home from the riding stable on a February night and something bashed into my car. I thought some jerk had thrown a snowball at my car, but when I got out I saw this little owl - just like yours! Brought him home, set up a nice warm nest box for him. I worked on campus in a laboratory, so I was able to bring mice home to feed my little owl. He became very tame, spending most of his time riding around on my head or shoulder. The minute he heard my voice when I got home in the evening he would start hooting and making other very humorous sounds as he made his way to me.
Finally, on a warm April day I decided it was time to release him into the wild. I brought him out to the yard. Now this apartment complex was in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by woods, fields, and marshes, so good owl habitat. I placed him on a bush, gave him a goodbye kiss and sadly walked back to me door. When I turned around, he was walking - yes, walking - right up the path behind me. Well after that I brought him back inside again. Finally, I realized I was doing him no favors, so I brought him outside again, put him in a low tree, gave him a kiss, and ran back to the apartment. I didn’t look back this time because I knew what would happen. I didn’t see him again, but I heard his piping call every evening, as if he was checking in to tell me he was OK, and to say goodnight.

IndependantW your story just brought tears to my eyes. That is so amazing and so sweet. this type of owl seems to be a lot like the personality of my youngest cat. It is truly amazing to hear that complete story and how he wanted to stick around. it is very wise of you to return him to his habitat. in Minnesota we would actually get in trouble if we kept the owl in captivity. I sure hope that some night we here are all making the hooting sounds like here all those for you. They are truly seldom scene it is very rare and a special gift to be able to see them. This is why I love doing UA-cam Vlogs because I hear stories from other people that make life so very interesting

Hey, I'm a cat person too!. I have had Siamese cats since I was a kid and now have Lucky and Buddy, two Siamese, keeping me and my husband happy.
But I'm sure if I tried to rescue an owl in 2017 I would be arrested. The authorities have much less patience with those of us what want to help wildlife. But when we "amateurs" step in to help it's taking $$$ away from all those government animal protection officers...
And I still have my photos of "Hootie" sitting on my shoulder and on my head to let me know that I was once able to do a good deed for a little owl.

IndependantW I keep thinking of your story and absolutely love hearing the relationship that that all established with you and you with the owl. That is a memory that will last a lifetime. It makes me hope even more that this little owl in our backyard has decided to live nearby. We think we saw him in a tree after Sunset 2 weeks ago during a campfire. I kept trying to look but he was in the neighbor's tree and I didn't want them to think we're creeping on them. I even took a picture of the silhouette of the owl. I am going to retain hope that that was him watching over us. I can't wait to hear him hoot some night after sunset I think Siamese cats are extremely gorgeous cats. they seem really mellow but I don't know anything about their personality. I understand it is better when you have two of them rather than just one because they keep each other company

Your owl recovered quickly because you DID take him inside and talked to him and reassured him and petted him. People who tell you NOT to take an injured wild animal inside under any circumstances are ignorant and fearful of animals in general. As you learned, the owl recovered quickly and returned to his normal habitat as soon as his crisis ended - thanks to your care. Many birds die from the shock of colliding with widows. Your immediate care and attention kept this owl from falling deep into a coma and dying from shock. Taking him inside immediately kept him from the influence of the cold weather which would have hastened him into shock and death from his collision.

I am really glad your little rescue survived :)
If you find a stressed bird like this, please place it in a ventilated box, in a dark quiet place away from people and pets. This is the best way to help them recover fast to be released, and will avoid extra stress and potential injury (like when it flew out of the box, and next to your cat that may have attacked it)!
Petting, holding and talking to wild birds can cause them to literally die of shock (of which you can see the first stages of in this video. The prone state, head tilting and squinting was a result of shock from impact and prolonged handling (and perhaps also brain trauma/bleeding.)
While your heart was in the right place, and I am glad you rescued the owl. letting people know correct ways to deal with wildlife on videos like this is extremely important for the future. Many birds don't recover like yours luckily did from this interaction, as unlike pets they don't understand that we mean well when handling them like you did.
(Speaking from the experience of rescuing many birds, and seeing the sad results of many who sadly do not survive interactions like this before pickup.)

The cat was like 'that just happened, u ok bud?'
If you do find other owls in such situation please refrain from petting them, they produce fat on the base of their tail and use it to coat their feathers, making them water proof, if you pet them, their feathers lose that property.
Aside from that, thanks for taking care of the little squeaker.

Pulled over and found a dazed Sawwhet owl staring up at me behind the rear seat. Kept it in my apartment for a few days until it was strong enough to release back to the woods of New Hampshire. @@FROSTYLIFE thank you for helping! However, your best would be keeping the owl away from your pets and contained in the box with a blanket on top. I can't imagine how scared it must have been, that is why it appeared so "calm". Shock does wonders to the body and can prevent healing from an injury. I know it's not your fault because you didn't know (it's not like we're really taught these things until after it happens) but maybe just keep it in mind for next time. Cheers!

And if you think they’re cute looking, wait until you hear their call. It sounds like a single note on a bamboo pan flute over and over and over and over, until you lose your mind. But really cute though, one of my favorite sounds to hear in the woods at night along with the whip-poor-wills. Very soothing (until you lose your mind, of course!)

It was a very sweet thing to keep the owl from potentially dying. However, if you somehow end up with another bird in the house, make sure it's safe! I have a couple recommendations if there is ever a next time.
    1) Make sure the bird in question is in a room where pets are not. That way, when/if the bird takes off, it won't potentially get hurt by one of your pets. Or vice versa! Birds have sharp beaks and talons, so you don't want your poor pet getting their eye poked out.
    2) Handling the bird can be tricky. You don't want a bird sinking its claws into you, or biting you. Also, you don't want the bird flying around in your house in any room-- the bird could crash into a window from inside your house, or crash into any furniture item while dazed. Keeping a towel or something between its claws/teeth and your skin is probably a good idea.
    3) Get informed! Sending an injured animal to the proper facility is a good idea, but you should do research as to what you should do with said animal. Some things seem very obvious once pointed out, but can be difficult to think of on the spot. Having cellphones means we can look up any information or videos on anything, anytime! That way, in any other situation, you can take on a challenge knowing the basic info on the animal itself, as well as the smartest course of action to take.
All that being said, you did a good job! I'm sure the owl is very grateful.

I loved owls to begin with, but when you see one up close like that, It just makes you love them even more. I loved them originally, but a couple of years ago, I went to a festival and saw a rescue booth that had a large Owl sitting with it's trainer, and I just stood there for about 30 minutes staring at the Owl, because it was so gorgeous. I just became obsessed with Owls after that. And then this last summer, The same trainer with the same owl for the same organisation was sitting outside of one of our store and I got a picture of it, and just loved it all over again.

When me and my husband lived in upstate ny one morning I found a tiny grey owl on my porch. she couldn't fly and so unsure what to do I gave her canned tuna, and water(come to find out owls get water from their prey).
We called her hootie, thankfully a close neighbor had a place for her and they took her and she saw a vet. The neighbor came back a few weeks later and told us a little about her, she could fly more then three feet without falling cause of the fall but it was a great experience and it was so nice to see her trying to fly around our livingroom. She had a wing injury and a head injury but she grew and stayed in the center. :) It was bittersweet that she would not be able to live in the "wild" again but at least we know hootie is still alive and thriving. Nice video, glad the little owl was able to fly!

I know crowsn mynahs r smart but they just "sewer rats" if they wild. Rampaging through bins n carrying diseases. A few times mynahs flew into my apartment when i forgot i left food out. There r more species in the forest and national bird park. In the neighborhood, nothing as cute this owl. It's a concrete jungle mostly in singapore.

people always super mad when people “interfere” with wildlife like its a delicate luxury that will die if you try to help it or touch it. then if you take it in your home to nurse it to health its treated like a war crime. like my dude its a owl thats injured and if you know how to help it then you should, people aren’t completely useless with helping animals if they aren’t an expert. But people get so offended for some reason like its sad that he had to ask for people to not go after him for helping it like there are thousands of different kinds of animals in the world and helping one isn’t going to make the species change.
Idk it just makes me mad when people get super defensive about that when some of them aren’t even veterinarians so how can they judge.
If anyone ever tries to tell you down and be salty to you for helping an animal and tell you what you “should” have done just ignore them, because all that matters is you helped it and its healthy again.

I should have said so in the video, but we looked up the nearest raptor center for injured birds and learned that the nearest one was 4 hours away in Minneapolis. That is way too far away so we did our best while follow the recommendations posted by organizations dedicated to bird rehab.

    • @stvbrsn
      @stvbrsn 4 роки тому +4

Vickie Pearson if you listen, he does speak in the video of his intention to take it to a raptor center. As he stated in his reply, the nearest one was prohibitively far away. Besides, once the little guy started to fly around the house, what choice did they really have but to open the window and hope for the best? I think they did everything perfectly. Plus they are a sweet, adorable family. And who doesn’t love a good Minnesota accent?

One of the things I learned at work was to always go prop up the birds that hit the windows. We were in a part at the back of our building and it has tall windows. The birds would hit a lot of times. I read an article that the birds need to be propped up on their feet to survive. Only a couple had passed away from the impact but if they are not propped up they will eventually die. I used to be the runner and would go out and set them up and we would see them fly away when they got their wits back. We eventually printed out shapes of hawks and taped them to the windows. The birds never hit the windows after that.

i had a big bay window in frontmof my house that birds used to fly into almost every day. Eventually i was worried that one would break it so i had it removed and had 2 regular windows installed there. I think they just dont understand that there is glass there and see the reflection of the trees behind them in the glass so they fly right into it. Great that u took it in for a bit to recover. very beautiful bird
