I know watched this one previously but watched it again... even though I have chickadees right outside right now. Just wanted to mention, with your love of chickadees, you should really check out the New Zealand Fantail.... They always reminded me of chickadees and nuthatches, but they're slightly larger with a big (fan) tail that the sway back and forth... The tumble and flutter much like chickadees do, but even more pronounced. And, if it's possible, they're friendlier .. easily the most curious/friendly bird species I've ever interacted with. They will follow you on a forest trail or in a backyard... just to see what the heck you're up to. The closest I've ever felt to being in a Disney cartoon was when being followed by a fantail or two. :D
Thank you for this vid! I've watched it a few times. I just started feeding birds on my balcony to entertain my cats, I didn't know anything about them, just recognized the chickadees. Now that Ive learned they are my favorites! One even ate out of my hand for the first time yesterday! I love how I can tell you find them so genuinely adorable. And you taught me a lot!
The Plains Indians, when asked which of all creatures is bravest, answered, "Not the wolf, not the grizzly, not the bison. It is Chickadee, the tiny warrior who stays through the worst of winters, though he could fly away, and he remains cheerful and positive regardless of all hardships."
These birds have straight up smashed my winter depression. Winter work hours are frighteningly lean, so a cheap hobby lately has just been walking. I walked out to a little peninsula nearby (Belle Island, Kingston), and these little guys started following me. I didn't believe it till there were like 5 of them; one nearly flew into the side of my head. I put my hand up, to see if they'd land on it, and immediately one did. By far my favorite bird. The other day I walked past a feeder I recently filled and was suddenly surrounded by dozens of chickadees flying all about me. I stood very still and just absorbed the magic.
All I get for all my efforts around the house is tons of house finches, sparrows that loiter at my feeders, and an occasional northern cardinal. It must be so nice to live where these friendly fearless beautiful birds reside. I truly envy those of you who have the joy of their company.
I keep my feeders filled with black oil sunflower seeds all winter long so they can stuff their little faces to their heart's content :) I see many every day.
And I the whole neighborhood. I live on a hilltop and I can see far and wide the birds coming to my feeder. It is quite hilarious. There are blackbirds house sparrows, black and blue tits, magpies, longtailed tits, ravens and gold finches sometimes. Living with nature is heaven for me. 🇨🇭💐🥳👍
I just watched this, Lesley. Awesome. I love my chickadees. They eat everything (nuts, safflower, sunflower, etc). They definitely "know" me and know my voice/inflection. They will fly and sit on a branch not more than two feet from me. I make sure that all of "my" birds have plenty to eat; especially during the winter. They are awesome birds. My feeders are always full.
Christopher Williams that’s awesome! It makes me wonder.. I’ve been feeding the same cardinal for 3 years and he is still scared of me when I put food out in the feeders despite him seeing me out the food out; maybe I should speak more to give him something to recognize?
CenturianEagle Cardinals are so shy. Mine come in the evening when it is almost too dark to see. If a storm is forecast I will take down my feeder pans for the night, so I wait and watch till they leave. And they are always the earliest too! I think their caution makes ‘your’ bird act that way.
Yes. Bird seed is such a big deal...I was at the tractor supply today in s e Virginia and noticed a large spilled hill of seed in the parking lot even the sea gulls were having lunch..guess it's a great store to be around if you're a bird
The name alone is one of my favorite things about them. When I finally looked up the bird with the cute name I'd heard for years, I was not disappointed. And I thought it was fascinating that when the two kinds of chickadees mate, the offspring's call is an even split between the parents' calls. Usually in nature you don't get that perfect split between parental traits but it's like the birds can't choose which parent to copy so they just split the difference.
Love hearing about the ddd.. I could swear my little ones alert the others everyday as I’m leaving the feeders.. “ok she gone let’s go!”lol.. I’ve had one step on my hand to eat.. best day ever!!! Love your videos...
Yes, the alert is real. When I refill the feeder, I immediately here an alert call. The same bird doesn't even wait until I move away, but flies right in and starts eating. Love it!
I love how when you feed them from your hand they will sit and pick through the seeds and throw away the ones they don’t like until they find just the right one. It always amazes me that they are so brave that they will sit there being choosey
This is why a good seed blend (with no filler seeds) for your feeders will keep them and most others from pushing seed off the feeder in search of the "right" seed. Less crud for them to pick through when you feed quality products. My .02c for what it's worth.

I have LOVED to answer these birds since I was little . Whenever I hear a Ooo-Hooo!! In the distance I MUST whistle an answer and they respond- they can keep it up for a very long time and always makes me feel like I have a little forest friend.
I have fond memories of being a small child and holding my hand out with my Grandfather while chickadees ate out of our hands in Northern Michigan. Thanks for the video.
I love all my birds but my dees have a special spot in my heart. I am seeing many different species this winter. We keep 3 different feeders going all winter......black oil, mixed seed and suet. Everyone is well fed and happy! Just ordered a red hoodie, will wear while working in the gardens this spring. When I wear red/orange/purple/ floral colors the hummingbirds fly all around me. I will hold a feeder and they will perch there sipping nectar. Those little birds are fearless!!
When I was younger, the Chickdees were very abundant. I haven't seen more than a few in the past 7 years. I love those little critters! He looks as though he's goin on a hot date ! I hope there plentiful in, like u say, in the Rockies or someplace where they flouresh. And they fly too !
I once saw a large group on crusted snow. They skittered around excitedly. There must have been a hundred or more of them in the bright sun . I threw sunflower seeds en masse and they jumped on them. So much energy that cold sunny day!
You can tell temp changes by that call also. Chickadee dee dee..it will be cold. Their summer song..the high low you call it...it will be warm. So if they are singing their summer song one day and switch to the other call you are guaranteed it will get cold in a day or so.
Excellent Lesley! These little birds are my favorite 'feeder buddies' for sure. While I haven't had as much overall success as you with getting them to feed off my hands, the chickadees were the first species to do so and they continue to hop on my hand/arm whenever I'm out doing feeder maintenance. I've had to chase them to a nearby branch more than once as they seem to want to hop on my arm/hand while I'm trying to fill feeders. I have two pair in particular that I've been feeding and watching for over 3 years now so they definitely benefit from the winter feeder access (we're in NW Wisconsin). Now if I could just get the woodpeckers to come to my hand I would be doubly thrilled! ha! (we feed 7 species of woodpeckers everyday during the winter - 9 total during the warm months).
LOVE our Chickadees. We feed them year round and always make sure the feeder is full for them and the cardinals, titmouse etc. Hope they live long lives in our neighborhood and great to know we're helping them to.
Most my life I've had little regard for backyard animals. A bold little chipmunk and his two chickadee friends changed that for me. Now I see life and friends everywhere I go.
I love the distinction in the naming of bird flocks. A “banditry” is awesome. Even my spellcheck knows the correct spelling. Who knew? ❤️❤️❤️ you L 👍 (A flock of crows is a “murder” .. creepy)
Chickadee's are my favorite because they're so cheery and whimsical. What you said about their chatter was really interesting to me because I "talk" to them when they are flitting around me. I enjoyed your tutorial. Thanks
I was just enjoying my coffee and watching one in my tree doing the "Fee Bee" call. They are one of my favorites if not my top favorite. So adorable! Reminded me of this video so I had to come back. Thank you for the lesson on these cute little birds!
I spent so much time in the woods of Maine as a kid watching the abundant birds, squirrels and chipmunks. The Chickadee is the Maine state bird. Hearing their sounds now relieves stress and makes me happy. I didn't realize then how lucky I was but watching this video and looking back brings back fond peaceful memories. I miss the woods of Maine... WeeeeeDeeeee
Oh I love these precious cuties! I try to whistle their song every day when I go out to feed all of my critters.Their songs are undeniable. I sure wish I could get them and the other babies to eat out of my hand....I'll just keep trying. In the meantime...their dee dee dee call and that little 'hey sweetie' whistle makes me smile every single morning! I love your channel....thank you so much!
Love our backyard cutie birds!! I feed them all, especially through Winter!! Really adore those sweet Chickadees and also the adorable Tit Mouse, who I call "T". : )
Chickadees are probably one of my favorite birds. I'll never forget the day I got one to eat out of my hand. However, the only time I've gotten them bold enough to do that is when it was snowing and they were probably desperate enough for the seed. Still an awesome moment, though.
Thank you so much! The chickadee is one of my favorite birds. I'm so excited to know their songs now! Partway into the video, I realized I was sitting here at my laptop smiling and feeling happy - just to see these adorable little things. There is something special about them. Thank you for making this video!
Thank you for showing this video with the little chickadee. I call him the preacher of the bird family. Because he got that the cap on his little head and the color around his neck. So I called the preacher. He's just so witty so beautiful and so tiny. But yet bring so much joy. Thank you for posting this video.
I am in western Massachusetts, the coldest and most rural part of the state. Chickadees are our state bird! My husband and I love how gentlemanly the chickadees are at the feeders. They wait their turn, and unlike the sparrows who sit at the feeders for extended periods, hogging all the spaces so no one else can get at the seed, the chickadees will stop by quickly, help themselves to one sunflower seed at a time and leave. They go flitting off to hide their food, then wait their turns again. Such nice little cuties. I really enjoy your bird videos and learn so much about the different bird visitors!
You introduce them to me and its ♥️ at the first sight, I love birds generally 🖤 pls, the voice of the lady who is narrating is soothing and relaxing ❤️
I feed them all winter in our Northern mountain climate, glad to hear I'm helping their survival. Here's an interesting story. When I moved to the mountains 40 years ago I was alone and didn't know anyone. I'd go out for runs and bike rides in the winter and if I was sad I'd always had a Chickadee call me. I thought it was just a coincidence that they were just calling to other birds but it happened so many times when I was sad that it came to be a normal thing. Especially since it didn't happen when I was happy. In the fall as winter approaches Chickadees will come up to me if the feeder isn't up for the winter soon enough. They're so brave, they come right up to me and start squawking, we love it! We love all birds but the Chickadees, what great birds!

My favourite! Fearless little things they’re the only ones who stick around when we fill the feeder.
Now I finally know who's making that high-low whistle. I whistle it for my cats often. They seen indifferent to it, but it's fun anyway.
I used to have a feral cat come running when I whistled that. It wasn't always for food. It was a scratch under the chin and a stroke along his back.
You can tell temp changes by that call also. Chickadee dee dee..it will be cold. Their summer song..the high low you call it...it will be warm. So if they are singing their summer song one day and switch to the other call you are guaranteed it will get cold in a day or so.
@@lindanwfirefighter4973 I didn't know that. Very helpful to understand my chickadees behavior. They are adorable.
I think that chickadee calls are some of my favorites out of all the birds that live in my area.
My chickadees recognize me. They begin chattering when I come outside. This was a great video.
I love these birds. I miss having my birdfeeders so much! The chickadees would fly around my head while I filled it. Such sweet birds!
My favorite bird. I love watching them in the winter at my feeders.
such sweet little birds that soft whistle always makes me smile and they seem so curious too
They always greet me when I go out to fill the feeders. Very uplifting.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE BIRDS! THE SWEET LITTLE CHICKADEE! GREAT PRESENTATION LESLIE!!
I love their hey sweetie call so much, its like hearing rain or feeling the warmth of fire on a cold day for me
LOVE our Chickadees. We feed them year round and always make sure the feeder is full for them and the cardinals, titmouse etc. Hope they live long lives in our neighborhood and great to know we're helping them to.
Lol I do have titmice but wish they were daily visitors - have lots of red finches that camp out and set up residence on my tube feeders .
I love their cute little faces. And they are very friendly and social!! I keep my feeders full and look forward to their visits
My favorite bird, all is well when they are around.
I love their nerdy chuckle.
Best fact for me: learning the meanings behind the tones and lengths of their calls.
Thanks for these amazing facts and footage!
Ditto - love "learning their language"
Cool...very cool! */:)
Most my life I've had little regard for backyard animals. A bold little chipmunk and his two chickadee friends changed that for me. Now I see life and friends everywhere I go.
The sweetest birds twittering around my feeders ... Thank you
Sweetest little 'dees 😭♥️ I love their sweetest song. The ones near my park eat seeds out of my hand and make me cry tears of joy
I love the distinction in the naming of bird flocks. A “banditry” is awesome. Even my spellcheck knows the correct spelling. Who knew? ❤️❤️❤️ you L 👍
(A flock of crows is a “murder” .. creepy)
A flock of ravens is an "unkindness"
DGA2000 creepy!
@@steviegee2011 I know
@xeepromx At least that one isn't creepy - lol
An episode of sparrows
I love these little guys. They watch for me to fill the feeders in the winter.
Chickadee's are my favorite because they're so cheery and whimsical. What you said about their chatter was really interesting to me because I "talk" to them when they are flitting around me. I enjoyed your tutorial. Thanks
I've heard their bird song not realizing that it was Chickadees. Thank you!!
Loved learning about the intricacies of their calls. 🎵
I love the random nuthatches!
"Nothing to see here, just an upside-down Chickadee!"
I have a bird feeder and a bird bath. My birds know where to come for food. I watch them out my window everyday. ☺
Always love watching these guys/gals. Now love them even more. Thank you.
I absolutely loved the fact about the their Hippocampuses. So cool!
Thank you so much! The chickadee is one of my favorite birds. I'm so excited to know their songs now! Partway into the video, I realized I was sitting here at my laptop smiling and feeling happy - just to see these adorable little things. There is something special about them. Thank you for making this video!
Wow burung yang cantik
Kalau di indonesia namanya burung gelatik batu ..
What a nice video. Thank you.
Glad you liked it. Thank you
@@LesleytheBirdNerd what about other chickdees🤔
It's my favorite bird to look at from my window. Beautiful and fast! Really enjoyed the video, filming, narration and info! THANKS
I most enjoyed hearing about the hybrid who sings 3 dees! What da hec!? That's amazing!
