Leonard and Hungry Paul keeps popping up and I definitely have it on my tbr list-my ever-growing tbr list. Really want to read Elizabeth Strout’s book. Great summaries. Thank you.
I really am with you for The Blue Book of Nebo, so fabulous. It would pay a reread I think. I want to get to Leonard and Hungry Paul thanks for the reminder. I'm reading Brooklyn at the moment (well listening to Saoirse Ronan reading it) and really enjoying it. Not planning to go straight on to Long Island at this stage, but we'll see.
@@LouiseReader The movie for Brooklyn was also quite good. They did make a few changes which I'm always persnickety about. I probably will reread The Blue Book of Nebo sometime.
I love this video, Angelia! So many wonderful quiet gems. I'm so glad that you liked Becky Chambers. She was a new discovery for me this year too, and I simply fell in love. I loved Leonard and Hungry Paul too. I think you might have been the first person I heard talking about it. I can't remember: did you read Loved and Missed by Susie Boyt? It was in the running for the Book Tube Prize for the first two rounds. That is a book that I adored, and I would call it a quiet gem also. Terrific idea for a video and great choices! Sorry you're not feeling well. I hope that you feel better soon...
@@BookChatWithPat8668 Thank you for reminding me about Loved and Missed. I haven't read it but I remember you and several other people loving it. I'll add it to my list! So glad but not surprised that you loved Leonard and Hungry Paul. I just remembered the scene about returning the stale chocolates....😄
@@readandre-read Yes! Such a brilliant scene! What a wonderful writer Hession is. Loved and Missed absolutely broke my heart. I think that I remember Greg at supposedly fun also having a very powerful reaction to it when he first read it. It's a tiny little book that packs a powerful punch. Related to nothing at all but an interesting fact I discovered is that the author of Loved and Missed, Susie Boyt, is the great granddaughter of Sigmund Freud. Her father was the famous artist, Lucien Freud.
Some of those toys on the vest look to be escapees from the Island of Misfit Toys! If Clear is that short how can I not gobble it down in one sitting with a big pot of tea and a bathroom break soon?
Hi Angelia, I love the idea of quiet gems. I loved convenient store woman. I lived in Japan and it really brought those vibes back to me. I love quiet gems. Aloha friend.
I LOVED "Clear" and also loved the ending! I hope you feel better soon. I travelled between provinces in Canada in the autumn and picked up something that took me out for a few weeks-gross.
Love the idea of quiet gems as a category. Leonard and Hungry Paul definitely epitomises the concept and I'm so glad The Warden worked for you. I have Long Island on my shelf and Clear on my wishlist. But The English Understand Wool sounds intriguing. Glad you are feeling a little better.
@@lindysmagpiereads Thank you, Lindy. I'm happy to see several people in the comments who also liked the ending of Clear. I thought the whole final part was so beautifully written.

Ah...quiet gems and reflecting as we end 2024. Sounds good to me. I came to Brooklyn by first watching the film so there was a narrow space for me too between that read and Long Island. I'm glad I read LI but I guess I felt maybe Brooklyn should have been a stand alone. I don't have to have a happy ending but maybe I liked Brooklyn so much I wanted to stop there. I came slowly to Strout beginning with Olive K but she is now one of my favorite authors and I like this latest one too. Other titles on your list I would like to try esp The English Understand Wool. TY
@@krc5210 I hear what you're saying about Brooklyn. I loved that ending and thinking about whether it was a happy one or not. If Toibin had stopped there I'd be okay but I did love Long Island. I would like a whole novel about Eilis' odd mother and one about Tony's brother Frank.
