I found you again! After looking for your video through hundreds of hip smart YOUNG people, I wrote into the search box: older lady with short dark hair favorite book recommendations and there you were. Just : Thankyou so much. Wrote down your list and started with The Queen of Dirt Island. I am such a fan.

@erinjanssens505 wasn't it wonderful? I almost didn't read it bc I find that books written past 2010 aren't my cup of tea at all. I haven't read any recent reads in years and years so I nearly passed it up. Now I'm thinking, oh no, what else am I missing? Also, I'm not a huge fan of short stories and NW wasn't that, but close. So in no way should this have been the book for me and yet it was absolutely book perfection!!! I'd love to re-read it but I'm so afraid that I won't love it like I did the first time I read it. Most of my re-reads hold up well, but some don't. I almost don't want to test it and yet, all I do is think about that damn book and wasn't go relive it all again!😆

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. My favorite 2024 reads: #1 The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, #2 Valentine by Tom Savage and #3 Confessions of an Ex-Scientologist Pothead by Liz Gale. I think you would enjoy Valentine. It is horror but not overly gory. I really enjoyed the way Savage created ambience and suspense. From your list I'm most interested in reading Rough Sleepers and James.

Thank you for the recommendations. I do like Kristin Hannah. I have only dabbled in horror and definitely nothing gory, but Valentine might work for me. Rough Sleepers moved me deeply. I wish I heard more people talking about it. James is the most important book that I read in 2024. We'll be hearing about that one for a long time, I think. Thanks for being here and for commenting so thoughtfully.

What a reading year you’ve had, Pat! I have read three of the books on your list: James (agree, very important book and has really stayed with me), Leonard and Hungry Paul (glad to see it crack the top 5, and just loved its gentle humour too - the email sign off contest), and Something Wicked This Way Comes (a fave from my early teen years). I have the Nuala O’Faolain book out from the library right now and am excited to get to it! I absolutely will add the Susie Boyt book to my list in 2025. Thanks for being such an inspiring book reviewer and enthusiast and for sharing your reading all year. I so appreciate you and your insights into all kinds of literature. Great list, Pat! It’s so hard to narrow down favourite books. I am working on mine, but I am waiting until the very end of the year to finalize it because I’m still reading several hours every day. Like you, I decided to leave rereads off my list. I’ve read 370 so far, and I gave 5 stars to about 90 of them, so I made some arbitrary decisions. I decided to separate award-winning titles from books that hadn’t received prizes. Then I chose a top ten in each of the two lists. I am curious to see if my rankings will shift over the last few days of 2024.

That's quite the eclectic list there! I have not read any of these books but have thought about reading James but would probably have to reread Huckleberry Finn first since I only read it as a kid and in German so a lot would probably be lost on me if I just read James now. I have not yet made any attempt at coming up with my favourite reads of the year but Silvia Moreno Garcia's The Seventh Veil Of Salome, Margaret Killjoy's The Sapling Cage and all of Ada Palmer's Terra Ignota series definitely made an impact on me as did my first reading of Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. There's probably more but that would require thinking and I'm not good at that.

I figured I couldn’t do separate lists for the different genres I read, so I just looked at the year as a whole and combined all genres into one list. It sounds like you’ve had a really intense and impressive reading year. If you decide you want to read James sooner than later, you really could do it with just a cursory review of Huck Finn. James does include the character of Huck, but it really goes off in totally different directions. Everett said he feels like he was in conversation with Twain, but that he wrote the novel that Twain never could have written in his day. I used to teach Huck Finn.
