What a lovely idea to pass on the Advent Calendar stories. I have an idea for my Advent calendar next year - the Advent story calendar plus a tea bag Advent calendar and maybe even a piece of chocolate calendar too. Thinking this will be a cozy break on a PNW rainy, dark, and dreary days. Thank you for the seed of an idea. I may even add a.tea bag and an editable treat to my pass alongside. I’m not reading much until after Christmas. I had my second eye surgery yesterday. Now both eyes see distance clear and crisp but up close not so much. I plan to read Catagory Five plus Issac’s Storm once I have my first ever pair of readers. In the mean time I’m thinking I’ll give Tom Lake on audio a go. Looking forward to reading a ghost story along with you Thanks for the heads up on the Brontë book.
I’m reading “The Extinction of Irena Rey” by Jennifer Croft. I usually try to read a wintery murder mystery to usher in the New Year (because nothing represents a peaceful/joyful New Year like crime, right? 😉🤪🤦🏼♀️). I don’t read too many ghost tales, but off the top of my head, “Beloved” by Toni Morrison is my favorite novel with a ghost.
I've been reading and listening to You Are Here by David Nicholls--a romance with a bit of hiking. Also reading How to Read a Book by Monica Wood. Read The Haunting of Hill House about a year ago and will most likely read again as I did not find it particularly scary, more of a psychological suspense story. Would recommend The Cliffs by J. Courtney Sullivan, a haunting house type story with lots of New England History thrown in. Not sure what I will read at the end of the year. I do know I want to read more translated fiction and also more non-fiction in 2025 and I two options. Forgotten on Sunday by Valerie Perrin translated from the French by Hildegarde Serle or non-fiction. Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe (which I guess is big on Netflix right now) but its been on my TBR for about 2 years. Happy Reading. Love the short story advent calendar.
I love Shirley Jackson's writing! I'm very excited for this first readalong. I just read The Sundial from her and it is now competing with Hill House for my favorite Jackson.
Emily, I think you're going to like Katherine Heiny's writing. If you need a pick me up novel of hers, try Early Morning Riser. I've read the Jackson biography and it was one of the best I've ever read. It's a deep dive but you get a real feeling for the time and place that she was writing. Excellent new theme for 2025.
Yes I love ghost stories! I’m in 😊

All I'm thinking about right now is what to read at that critical juncture of Dec.31!
