For real! That one little blip shook up my entire outlook on my preparedness. All the prep work, ammo, food storage, able to draw on a target in 0.9 seconds doesn't mean much if you cant/don't see the threat. I need to do some awareness and observation exercises, cause getting smoked within 75 yards because I didn't see the threat doesn't bring me warm fuzzies

In the Marines, we used to shoot human sized targets at 500m with iron sights on the M16A2. While this sounded good on paper, it was totally unrealistic because the distance/location was known. Not to mention the target was stationary. Without magnification, we had no idea what we were shooting or if we even made a hit.

@deltathirtyfour that's the big sticking point. Pick something and TRAIN with it. Proficiency matters just as much as the tool you use. Not that training makes up for deficiency with equipment, but that proficiency gets the most out of that equipment.
My chosen optic is the Vortex Razor 1-6x Gen 2 JM-1 reticle (the old heavy model they replaced with the lighter, but arguably less robust "E" model).
The weight sucks, but for all the reasons mentioned in the video it gives the best odds of rounds where they're wanted from bad breath distance at 1x, out to 400-600 yards, or those pesky low visibility targets in concealment at closer distance at 6x.
I've played with an offset MRDS, but for reasons you've stated in another video, I'm going to move that to a 12 o'clock mount.

What I like about your videos is that you offer a lot of food for thought. I don't own a bunch of guns, but I do practice often with those that I have. Over the past couple of years, I've found myself reaching for my red dot only rig less and less, because I've found it more often leaving me wanting for something more. I usually take my rig with the TA31/piggyback setup when I want to be prepared for the widest range of circumstances. Its light, compact and some magnification is better than none. I recently started shooting in an environment where even a 300 yard shot with the 4X ACOG was very difficult and only knew the target was there because I knew it was there. If the target had been a real threat, odds are that I would have missed it. When we went to taking turns shooting in a scenario where the shooter was only informed of the number of targets, but not their location, I had to go and grab my rig with the 2-10x32 on top. This worked pretty well out to about 500 yards. That day left me scratching my head. After 35 years of shooting, I thought I had things figured out. I'm not abandoning the ACOG, because my experience, however limited, tells me that the ACOG is aguably the most bullet proof.
The aftermath of Katrina taught me a lot about having to move fast and light and what is really important in that sort of situation; so, the question stuck in my head now is .... what do I grab if I can only have one? Despite my recent experience, my inclination is still to grab the rig with the ACOG.

Did you, or do you, ever find that reticle too cluttered? I looked at all the options (2 or 3, I think) and they all look super-busy. And they all rely on the chevron, which IMO is a weakness at 4x+. Can't deny that every video I've seen, with scope-cam footage, looks insanely good sight picture/glass quality wise, thin-ness of the bezel is very good. ATACR 1-8x or even NX8 1-8x look more functional to me for reticles, though.
I have an Arrowhead 1-8x with Guerrilla BDC, that I wish I'd got in Sharpshooter Mil or whatever is the mil hash version. But I didn't know then what reticle types I'd prefer. The image quality and brightness in low light are pretty decent. It's not swanky glass but it's functional. Minus the poor choice on BDC reticle.

As a 12 year old kid, some 5 decades ago, I hankered for a 4x scope for my Crosman .177 pump air rifle. I learned basic Daisy spring BB rifle marksmanship at a summer camp in elem school, it hooked me immediately. The 4x wish was from me wanting to see more distinguishing features at distance, like a bird on a scarecrow overlooking a garden. But after I got a driver's license I stopped shooting my air rifle. Waited another 40 some years to begin. Started with RDS because irons are tough when you have to wear reading glasses to see the front sight post. Struggled with the desire to see more things at distance, began marching through LPVO/MPVO choices. Ran them in different settings to see pluses and minuses. This whole video spoke to me as wise lessons, learned from real situations not bench racing or flat ranges with known distance markers. Very well done.
Best emphasis is, you have to run the setup to know if it works. You can't bench race it. Bench racing, not a bad way to pass idle time, but it never results in real world utility from my experience. Definitely can't replace it.

6:00 Iron sights old gang here. I realized early on that a person lying still in the prone is damn near invisible (and invincible) from a 2D ground pounder on the move. There's just FAR too many pixels for our brains to sort through, then you take a single step forward and your brain has to reprocess everything because it looks different now. Also, your movement makes you stand out like a white steel range target to Mr Enemy.
I love being good with iron sights, but in the age of night vision, thermals, aerial drones (3D detection), lasers and lidar, they're anachronistic for serious applications. An unaugmented human is a dead human on the near-future battlefield.

I’ve been watching your videos for the last few months, and they are by far the most in depth and informative for actually applying the use of optics in the real world. The way you present footage through the optics to demonstrate what you’re talking about makes it easily digestible. Stuff that I’ve had to figure out on my own over the years by spending tons of money on new optics and lots of time at the range you quickly demonstrate in a 20 minute video. Love it! 😂

Thanks, this is by far the best tutorial/video on this subject. Something I am in the process of evaluating at this time myself. I think one of the huge points made is how the LVPO helps identify threats you cannot see with a red dot or the naked eye. I tested this some as well and your point was proven. So many videos on this subject do not point this out. Also your on target reticle presentations are the best I have seen and I know how difficult this is to do. Great Job - Thanks again

EXPS3 on Unity Mount and Vortex Micro or G43 3x MAGNIFIER on Unity FTC Mount is my preferred choice for general purpose.
For 90% of the people i still think Red dot or HWS is all thata needed . If they want some zoom just throw on triplier.
Even shooting in 2Gun matches when we shoot 300Y I'm using EXPS3 with triplier . Anything past 300Y i prefer Mil FFP X-Mas Tree style reticle. I have 0 issues shooting BDC style reticle . I just prefer Mil base .
LPVO damn sure do not make you shoot better but they sure do make you see better.
I can run LPVO almost as fast as my EXPS3. Shooting on the move using EXPS3 is 10000x faster than my Athlon Ares UHD ETR 1-10X24 MIL FFP ATMR3 . Thats a fact for sure .
I have shot my EXPS3 with Triplier out to 405Y and i impacted on the 3rd shot . I know i can shoot past 300 with Triplier but it damn sure is easier with LPVO...

Outstanding video. I've been spewing about the virtues of PID to my red dot buddies for years. Finally many are on board with at least going the magnifier route. IMO, although the added weight is worth mentioning, I have embraced the idea of running a separate LPVO with ranging capability AND an additional red dot . One of these would be in a pouch in my pack based upon the giving training scenario. No optic does it all.
My current favorites are the G3 Vortex 1-10 for DMR functionality and a T2 for close range speed . The COF would ultimately dictate which optic on a QD would be used. Easily changed in the field in less than a minute. Also worth mentioning, I run a 12 o'clock mounted RMR on the G3 1-10 as well for hasty shots using a chin weld if needed.

Interesting video with lots of great things to take into consideration I like both LPVO and dot with magnifier. I think dots have a clear advantage in urban environment. Distance out to 200 with the correct zero gives virtually no hold overs . No parralex and if you suck at judging distance won't matter inside 200yds. However I still like the LPVO also. Choices we all have to make them .

This is yet another demonstration of how you are a MASTER of visual examples and clear, concise explanation. You're a gifted teacher. And that intro was sick haha.
A few things I'd like to add, if I may:
1 - Another downside of the RDS magnifier combo is zero shift. Zeroing with the magnifier on may not result in the same POI with it off and vice versa. This is something the user must account for that is not present with a quality LPVO.
2 - With many red dots, battery life is long enough that it is entirely practical to leave the sight on. This may matter to someone using his rifle as a bedside gun. One may argue that with a weaponlight an illuminated reticle is unnecessary but it is still something to be cognizant of.

3 - In keeping with the idea of home defense, red dots have no ocular settings to adjust therefore giving them easy interchangeability between multiple users (although y'all really should each have your own guns).
4 - Where can we get those active camouflage mags? 🙏🙏🙏

    • @Pishadoo42

I tip my hat to you sir and no doubt will steal your wise words in the future!!! Thank you! I grew up in a time very much unlike todays America. I listened to my father and his friends speak of opposite views, Democrats and Republicans - all remaining close friends and hunting partners. Well great minds used to “interlock” when debating ideas with the goal that they would walk through differences in thought, devils advocate, and eventually arrive to truth. The loser of the the debate would be grateful to the winner because together they both are now more intelligent with better information. Imagine being thankful to someone when they show you your errors, Nate as of nowadays they want to destroy you for hurting their ego and perspective when faced with contradiction. Culture has shifted, but there are still plenty who may see interlocking as a way to be better, and not feel threatened. Appreciate you watching!

The tarcom tarac is cool for red dots for getting easier holds out to 600, but this video explains it so well that even with 3x it doesn’t do near as well as higher magnified optics. Great content as always!

I remember in 1998 we had to clear threats in the woods as you approached the shoot house or risk taking a hard sim round. If you didn’t clear the shoot house well, the same thing. Later there, were smaller and smaller cover areas to end in a telephone pole. During these smaller and smaller cover points an instructor was behind plexiglass fire full auto large hopper paint balls. The goal was not to get hit. Also, you couldn’t advance until you hit the plexiglass with a sim round.

@@deltathirtyfour No, OG United States Border Patrol. Except for law and Spanish, our lives were ran by instructors who were originally former Marine DI’s and Gunnies and treated it as such. 6.5 months of that. Hell week, the sand pit. There was zero mercy and men and the occasional woman were held to the same standard. We had one of four women graduate. We only lost one former DI for another one. Apparently, the mat room standing at a field interview stance making a woman’s sexual organ symbol and doing underwater push us and sit ups “went too far,” mostly because of the illnesses associated with the swamp water paper mill adjacent.

There is only one acceptable answer. Multiple Uppers or complete rifles. ( I favor the complete rifles as you still have multiple uppers, but now you can toss a complete rifle to a buddy and you are no longer alone in the fight)
Great video, love your hard work on the presentation and post production side. Can't wait for more videos.

    Good video man.
I feel like after watching so many guntubers over the years they kind of start to all seem the same...you have a new, refreshing video style. I learned a lot

This is really good! You hit on all the common argument points and im very much appreciative of that.
I will say the durability point is pricepoint and build quality based. A high end lpvo is equally as durable as a high end red dot, or irons. Likewise, cheap irons are just as fragile as cheap red dots, and cheap lpvos.

A ton of variation by brand. some optics are built like tanks but have crappy features and feel generic at a low cost point. thats the hardest part of a diagram.

This was definitely a fun video to make. Hopefully people realize how a range can restrict real world use. A lot of internet Mumbo Jumbo giving sub par perspectives. Appreciate you watching!
