She is a great influence to me personally...coupled with her cousin Tirunesh dibaba. These Ethiopian athletes have inspired me to understand that I can be whatever I want to be irrespective of race, language barrier and society. No one would believe that Me being a Nigerian, I have been able to understand and speak the Ethiopian official language Amharic through the influence of Derartu tulu, Tirunesh dibaba, Haile gabresiliase, Almaz Ayana, Kenenisa Bekele, and the greatest Olympian Abebe Bikila. Now I can speak and write Amharic (still learning), I love their food, culture and lifestyle. I am now an Habesha (as Ethiopians say) because of my love for these athletes. After i done watching my tears suddenly falling down😥though i am philippine but i had a lot of friends ethiopian and i am so proud of her.... i do believe now that when it comes to running enthiopian is always on the top.. the unbeatable runner👏👏bravo she's amazing..
As chance would have it I sat beside Darartu on a plane flying from Germany to Shaggar in the mid 1990s. She was so humble and homely I couldn't believe she exchanged few words and smiles with me. She is a symbol of efficiency, grace, and beauty.

Yes indeed, Derartu Tulu is an Ethiopian Legend in Athletics. All Ethiopians really love here!. I always remember the olympics when she just recieved a prize from the legendary prime minister Meles Zenawi. She is an Olympic history maker.
Apart from the athletics, Derartu is an amazing humane being, a kind and with a down to earth personality who loves and cares everybody equally , you can see her always smiling and laughing I think this emanates from her deep care for people.
