The most memorable thing about Thorpedo for me is the smoothness of his stroke. It didn’t look like he was going fast at all because his strike was so calm. Meanwhile he’s in first and everyone else is flailing their arms and kicking furiously.

Amazing. However it's mostly anatomy I'd say. I mean, it's natural, not something you look for. I, say, in my teens was a decent semipro swimmer, and for franticly as i pushed in freestyle I could never be as fast as I was - effortlessly- in butterfly. I could have competed with freestylers I mean, and get at least the podium. So, yeah, it's pretty much anatomy.
And yes, Thorpe's freestyle is one of the most beautiful - and effective - I've seen.

I swam competitively and played water polo for 10 years, and idolized Ian Thorpe (so jealous of his giant feet!). So nice to see his life has gone well, that he is happy and healthy. Thanks for the inspiration Ian.

This is the man that made me love swimming even more...During the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, I was already in my late 20's and early 30's. I've never missed watching Ian Thorpe's races on live TV. I was idolizing this guy and I've always had the motivation to kept on swimming, too...:) He's such a great Olympian and an inspiration to the world...God bless you, Ian...you really are a legend, a living legend !

Crazy to think that Ian swam a 400m final, then on the same night anchored the 4 x 100 relay against Gary Hall Junior, who was the Caeleb Dressel of that era. Not only did he go against him, but actually beat him, a middle distance swimmer beating the best sprinter in the world after winning a 400m final not long before…. 1 word… PHENOMENAL!!!
