-Dolly Parton.
Dolly is the greatest songwriter EVER. Change my mind.
@@mikejames2712 Stevie Wonder
@@kaniajones4029 Not even close...IMHO
@@mikejames2712 With all due respect, Dolly has over 50 albums and none of them went #1. She has just 2 #1 songs. One is a duet.
We are talking overall music consumption. Not just a specific genre.
Stevland Morris wrote his first #1 song at age 13. A record still unbroken. He now has 10 #1 songs. Nine are solo. He has 3 Album of The Year Grammys and 3 #1 albums. He is widely known as a musical genius and is known as a PIONEER of music. He, in my opinion and backed by facts, is ahead of Dolly Parton and truly one of the greatest song writers ever.
@@mikejames2712 you missed where I said OVERALL music charts. I know she had 25 top country hits. Which is amazing by the way. But her country hits weren’t bigger than the other genres out at that time. When Stevie topped the r&b charts, he topped the pop charts too. Both great writers but she aint messin’ with Stevie and many others. Good day
The fact that she wrote this AND Jolene in less than 48 hours is insane.
Whats the real story. I've heard some say she wrote it on the same day...

It’s okay as long as people remember that Dolly was the original 😋
I like song writers. Without them, no songs. Sure, big singers do
some cool stuff. But without the song they got nothing. A great song can be great weather Pavarotti sings it or if I sing it in the shower. It’s about the song.

I'm sorry to say I never knew that Dolly sang this originally. This is absolutely beautiful
Not only sang it...but she wrote it!!!❤ and yes it is a beautiful song
I'm just finding out myself!
Myself too. However it just goes to show the best example of humility I have come across in an artist. Dolly didn’t feel the requirement to publicly claim her work. She had no requirement to do so. The sign of an incredibly generous artist of immeasurable talent. Happy 50th birthday to “I will always love you!” Dolly Parton.

Dolly WROTE and sang it.
This is the version that makes me cry. I can envision Dolly telling this to Porter when they parted ways. She sings it with a southern belle cry in her voice…like a lullaby.
Indeed it is so touching
Whitney sang lt with her heart, but Dolly sang it with her soul 😘😘😚

Love this song. To me, Whitney's version is like eating out at a fancy restaurant and having a great meal. This version is grandmas home cooked meal with the family on a Sunday after being away for a very long time, love it.
I love the comparison!
@Oscar Sebeloane What a lovely comment!
Love that metaphor
Best analogy here.
This comment should have more upvotes, really. Great analogy!
While the Whitney version is much more acrobatic and intense, this version is much more emotional and heartfelt in it's delivery. It comes off feeling more beautiful and touching.
Philthy well Dolly Parton is the original maker of the song it should be and stay a country song
Philthy Whitney’s version is more my generation. But I love this original too

I grew up with Whitney’s version without knowing Dolly’s. Both versions have a place. Thank you both for giving us these songs
You know that whitney OD'ed don't you? RIP
Dolly wrote so many great songs - that she RARELY even gets credit for! A lot of people were amazed that she wrote the song that Whitney made so much of (on). With Whitney's version I think, "wow, listen to those vocals!"
With Dolly's version, I want to weep.
When I was younger, I first heard, and only listened to Whitney's version. As an adult, I see Dolly's as the ultimate version because the story is front and centre, yet I would have never given it a chance without having heard Whitney's first. So there is a place for appreciating both these talented women.
This makes no sense dead both good songs Whitney did not diminish what this songs stance for unlike all the other artist out there today that use old songs in sing them today, Does not know as long as she stayed true to what the song meant
@Hilary that was exactly what I was thinking!
I like that both versions tell the story of the song differently. And both are valid! But since Dolly wrote it herself, she knows the heart and soul of the song. But that doesn't discount Whitney's amazing technical vocal feat.

When I was 10 years old I lost my grandmother who was like a mother AND a father to me. She was my whole world. After her death I would lay on a mattress at night staring up at a single bulb in a tiny trailer with my cassette tape and headphones. Alone, heart broken and grieving I would listen to this song, rewind, and listen again. It was a deep sorrowful pain I wish upon no one. She gave me this tape before she died. She was the love of my life and this song was her good bye. To this day I can’t listen to it without feeling her and tearing up. 27 years later I still miss her deeply. She was an amazing lady.
Hope you are doing well now. Sorry I just don’t know what to say

My favorite thing about this song though is the story Dolly tells about how when she first heard Whitney's version she didn't realize what the song was at first, just that it sounded familiar, and when it got to the chorus it surprised her so much she nearly had a car accident xD
Well, there's more emotion in this one, since it was honest song. Dolly write if for Porter Wagoner wneh she was about to leave their band and go solo.

Unlike Whitney, Dolly keeps the song warm and personal even in the high notes. Her voice is almost pleading where Whitney is screaming. Kind of a soft consensual breakup vs. toss all your belongings out the door situation.
It's sung with two different meanings. This one feels like a heart break. Like two ppl walking away.

Here we go again, debating which version of a song is better. Both Dolly and Whitney gave us impassioned and beautiful recordings. Can't we just let it go at that?
One is full of emotion, one is just bellowing. Can't we just let it go at that ?
Thank you... I don't understand why people want to fight about that... Choose the one you love, and love the other one too...

In Dolly's words about this song:
"The song came straight from the bottom of my heart. All of those feelings, all of those thoughts, all of those things we had been through, all the things we had been to each other, all of the things we had done to each other, all of that was in one song. I was so emotional I was crying when I was writing it.
I went into his office and said, "Porter (Wagoner), sit down. I want to sing you a song I wrote." When I started to sing the song, he started to cry. He knew that I had been crying when I wrote it. He got it. He said, "That's the best song you ever wrote. And you can go, if I can produce that song." I said, "It's a deal!"
Now the song is going to live forever. I thank Porter for that song. I think of him every time I sing it. If it hadn't been for him, I'd never have written that song."

Maxwell Grimsley oh shut up you literal BUFFOON
I've alway looked at this version as a completely different song to Whitneys version. Dolly had such a sense of closure in her voice and delivery. Whitney had the stand out vocals that would make this song a radio hit. Dolly saw the end of a failed relationship and realized that NO MATTER what happened, she would always love Porter. Loving someone and being with them are two different things. Dolly's delivery of this song made me realize that you can love someone from a far and still be happy loving someone else. It's hard to know where you're going if you don't know where you've been.
I've never liked this song, but this version is still superior to the Whitney Houston version by some distance. It has actual delicacy and feeling to it. The Houston cover is just an excuse to indulge in interminable oversinging, yelling the song out as loudly as possible and hanging onto every note as long as possible to a degree that is excruciating. The ability to show off egregiously for what seems to be a very long time is not the same thing as good singing.

But above all this, I wish you love
[Chorus]
And I, I
Will always love you, ooh
I will always love you
I will always love you, ooh
I will always love you, ooh
I will always love you, ooh
I, I will always love you
I did not know that the Whitney Houston version was a cover, thank you for making me aware of this Mr. Lynch!
No disrespect to Whitney, but Dolly’s version is wayyy better
here because of Pam & Tommy
Whitney’s was radio and perfect. Dolly’s is a drive out of the city after a break up. I don’t want attention or anyone, just want to be alone. End up in some small bar with an unknown but talented singer who sings the perfect song to go with my whiskey and heartache.
this version truly emphasizing the feeling of the song
0:13
[Verse 1]
If I should stay
I would only be in your way
So I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you each step of the way
[Chorus]
And I will always love you
I will always love you
[Verse 2]
Bittersweet memories
That's all I am taking with me
Goodbye, please don't cry
We both know that I'm not what you need
[Chorus]
But I will always love you
I will always love you
[Bridge]
I hope life treats you kind
And I hope that you have all
That you ever dreamed of
And I wish you joy and happiness
But above all of this, I wish you love
[Chorus]
And I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
The difference between the Versions is Houston's is like listening to a technically great guitarist. But Dolly's is like listening to a guitarist that you feel the players Soul in every note.
Now bitch fuck withney have voice of gold this old lady not
Whitney's cover is too theatrical for my taste; Dolly's original is intimate and more emotive--it tugs at the heartstrings
drownsoda who cares what you think ...Dolly is quoted saying she loved Whitney version
@@thetruthandnothingbutthetr6484 who cares what Dolly thinks...
Gergő Vincze all of a sudden you don’t because it doesn’t fit your hillbilly narrative
@@thetruthandnothingbutthetr6484 It is personal taste, I like this version better. Does that make me stupid or a bad person? Also, just because someone likes the white girl/country girl singing it that makes them a hillbilly?
FPSHusky who cares about your opinion
Priscilla brougth me here to listen this amazing and emotional version. The singer's heart seems to be in her mouth. ❤
Do you remember when she was singing with... don't quite remember exactly, 5 guys or so..... she sounds like a musical instrument. Nobody had an instrument at that time. Dolly, is yep I .do love the Dolly Pardon.
This is wonderful
Hi Cathy hope you're okay?

Queen of country and a real legend! i love you dolly 😍😍😍
Both Dolly and Whitney their versions are wonderful.
Dolly’s version sounds like shes singing to someone personally. Like shes sitting on her porch together with that special someone with a guitar on a warm summer night softly singing it.
Awww! I love what you said!
Dolly actually wrote the song as a way of saying goodbye to her business partner, Porter Wagoner. She wanted to branch out into a solo career and he was very hesitant
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Will_Always_Love_You
Dolly did, she sang it to her boss when she was quitting. She wrote it for Porter Wagoner.
Here i am 14 years old, listening to Dolly’s version the first time and I’ve never actually cried listening to a song the first time but i am right now, i’ve always loved dolly thanks to my lovely nan who passed a few years ago the day before my birthday, this has moved me
It is funny how people undermine Whitney's ability to emote just because she has a technical, powerful and operatic voice. When in fact, the first thing I remember about listening to Whitney's version for the first time - is crying my eyes out because of how soulfully she sang it. The finale climax and THAT note, which people mostly look at as a piece of vocal masterclass - which it certainly is, is also the point where it sounds as if she's crying her heart out while saying her final goodbye to someone. An unabashed outburst of emotions.
Dolly Parton's version moves you just as much. It's really a matter of where you are in your life, and which emotion are you relating to more at that point.
Dolly's version is special because it was a personal message from her for someone she was actually saying goodbye to, hence her emotion reflects. Whitney's version is special because you get to experience one of the finest vocalists of the last 100 years at the top of her game and because of that iconic sax solo (which sounds like looking back at making love with someone you loved, in retrospect).
Kudos to Dolly for writing it, but Kudos to Whitney for putting it on world map and turning it into a #1 in nearly every country in the world.
No-one is undermining her ability to emote, what the fuck is wrong with you?
@@ashesofhopesinabonfireofdr6341 overreact much?

*Can you all please stop this comparison between the versions of this song And appreciate this one while you are here ¿?*
Well said👍!
here after pam and tommy
i will always love you dolly ❤
You will always be remembered especially when I am trouble d
You notice how many country singers mimic the Allison Krause sound.. you never hear a reminisce of Dolly Parton's voice. It's because people can't.
I grew up with Dolly’s version. It was out there for 38 years before Whitney did her version. I appreciate Whitney’s version, but for me it will always be a cover. I have DECADES of history listening to Dolly’s version. Whitney’s is still in its first decade. And, at the same time, I have to say that they are both timeless.
Um..Dolly's version is 1973 and Whitney's is 1992. That's 19 years, not 38. You ok?
Dolly should be a national treasure to your country. She is so totally selfless, compassionate, child-like, kind and cute. That's not even taking into account how quick-wittedly funny she is, how stunningly beautiful she was in her younger years and how naturally talented she is as a singer and songwriter. A true artist and musician to be remembered for centuries.
