Agree - what a beautiful face she has. There are some photos of her from early in her career where it’s not unreasonable to say “she is one of the beautiful women in the world”. In the era every bit as stunning as Raquel Welch or Faye Dunaway
I'm an old guy, and it's amazing how the younger people analyze this song, and don't understand the ethos of the time and place it was written. The Judaeo-Christian ethic permeated the entire culture then. Divorce was seen as a tragedy. Marriage meant children. And women accepted the idea of one man for each woman. The narrator is appealing to Jolene to do the right thing, and not use her beauty and allure for evil....breaking another woman's heart, and breaking up her home. She reminds Jolene that Jolene will have no problem finding the right man, and that HER man is not him. She doesn't threaten or scold Jolene, but appeals to her sense of dignity and conscience.....and allows Jolene to meditate on that.....and the karma that could return to her if she continues in this direction. It's an incredible song, telling a multi-layered song in only 132 words.....
It's a real shame that the vast majority have no idea of her talent as a songwriter and performer. When she was a rising star, the media did everything they could to belittle her. She was mocked and degraded because of the shape of her body. For every wonderful thing she did they found an equal number of ways to tear her down and portray her as nothing but a sex symbol. Disgusting. I hope she gets her true due someday.
@@TourPace Me too. In interviews she's so casual about that day too. I wish I could write ahit this good and say it was just a "pretty good songwriting day".
that wasn't the point of her calling Jolene beautiful. Jolene might have been a vixen, and those types of people live to break up relationships. She is admitting she is inferior to Jolene in hopes that Jolene doesn't take her one and only love.
I just seen her say jolene was a young girl who asked for an autograph. Dolly complemented her saying she was very pretty and asked her for her name. She told the young girl she was going to write a song with her name and if she ever hears it she’ll know it was about her inspiration.
I've heard all the covers. Never would've guessed the original strings had such a melancholic & exotic melody to it. Idk why the covers strayed away from that. Oddly enough this sounds more fresh to me now than any other artist I've heard singing it.
I think the best part of this song is how she doesn't blame Jolene for anything. It's not mad at her. She's like girl you are gorgeous you could have any man you want it's just that I only want this one. And you haven't flirted with him you're not trying to take him away but he's got this hang up on you and I'm just asking you politely to make sure he knows that you're not available. We need more like that.
I'm a man and if a man has already had someone and still fall for others... That's messed up. He doesn't love you anymore. If a girl already knows that and still want him back, that girl is broken... too broken... If i ever loved another person when i have my gf who loves me to this point, i'm a terrible human being. The worst part is that we don't even know the real reason why she died and I was powerless against the pain she was feeling while she was on the verge of death all because we couldn't go to the vet for pandemic reasons. Last night, my brother and I cried so hard while we watched her last moments alive. I held her little paw on my hand and I told her quietly that it's okay to go. If that's how it is... I'm okay with it. I'll see you when the universe resets, my sweet Jolyne.
CS:GOCEANIC Dolly wrote this song back when her and Carl had only been married for a few years, apparently there was a secretary at Carl's place of work that kept flirting with him. He Almost gave into her flirts. Dolly found out and wrote the song.
She literally tells you - in the song - what Jolene looks like. Reddish-brown hair and green eyes means she is very exotic looking like a bewitching seductress in a fairy tale.
In an interview she says that Jolene was a little girl who looks exactly like she described in the song. This girl was a fan who jumped on the stage to meet Dolly. Dolly said "You are the most beautiful thing i have ever seen. What's your name?" She said "Jolene" Then Dolly said "Oh I know! Your father's name must be Joe and they named you after him." And Jolene responded "No... Just Jolene." And Dolly said " Jolene. I will write a song about you and you will think of this if you hear it anywhere." Search it on youtube. I watched the interview. Maybe she connected Jolene's beauty to what she experiences with her husband?
Love how this song beautifully depicts how deeply dolly understands Jolenes appeal. It’s not that she’s in love with her (as some have asserted) but when your in love with someone who is in love with someone else- they haunt you. This song is a reflection of that jealousy that all woman can feel when a more beautiful women is a threat. She’s a women obsessed, defeated, desperate. Such a wonderful song that gives goosebumps especially that 🪘 beat…. Mimicking a racing heart… the urgency and desperation she’s feeling.

@@dozzzorWhitney's is more of a cover into a new musical style, whereas Beyoncé did a remake into a new meaning. I can't help but imagine that Jolene is actually the personification of death(maybe like a death goddess or something) and the singer is begging her not to take her sick husband to the other side,I know it isn't but I still think it would make for a cool concept :)
+C Cornwall It actually is based on true events. The inspiration for the song was from when Dolly met a little girl who fit the physical description of Jolene in the song and the girl said her name was Jolene. Also, the whole stealing her man was a woman who went after Dolly's husband. So it is partially true
2:04 I always cherished that subtly flaunted little flip in voice register, it’s breathtaking. What a perfect way to complete the bridge. That little detail, to me, goes so far in regards to the pleading nature of the lyrics.
This song makes me want to go to jail in Florida Edit: A year and some change later my beautiful daughter is born with her middle being name Jolyne. Pretty happy to see Stone December 1st of this year with her. Not really looking forward to THAT scene though. Yare Yare dawa.
So. If Dolly's man in this song is so easily swayed by Jolene, we have one of two scenarios on our hands: 1. Dolly never really had him in the first place. He's an inconsistent, douchey skirt chaser who will leave her for Jolene the second he feels like he can. 2. Jolene is a succubus and is just a whim away from glamouring Dolly's faithful man away from her, and so Dolly is pleading with an immortal demon to take pity on her.
I never thought the man was literally hers, but rather that he's "hers" in a sense that she has her eyes set on him, and yet he's interested in someone else. There's no contempt in her voice for Jolene, just desperation and wishful thinking. She's hoping that things between the two of them don't work out (or that Jolene doesn't even return his feelings) just so she could stand a chance, which I feel is tragic in its own right, like he'd just settle for her because the "better" option wasn't available. Also like, who would tolerate their partner just openly oogling and obsessing over another woman while in a relationship with you?
@@Keaze he talkS about Jolene in his sleep - they clearly must have a thing going on if he spends a lot - if not all nights with Dolly. There's no contempt because at the end of the day, it would be her mans fault to leave her and go for Jolene, so she doesn't blame Jolene if she 'takes him', she is stuck and doesn't know what to do anymore hence she's literally begging the girl to leave him alone. If Jolene didn't return his feelings, why would D beg her not to take him? It seems like J is just bored and flirting, but doesn't understand the impact she has on the guy or how much it means to Jolene and could 'destroy her happiness'. Who would tolerate their partner openly oogling and obsessing over another woman? Nobody. But she knows there's nothing she can do, she is so in love with him she doesn't even want to tell him that she knows in fear of losing him - hence goes begging Jolene. Toxic love.

Agree - what a beautiful face she has. There are some photos of her from early in her career where it’s not unreasonable to say “she is one of the beautiful women in the world”. In the era every bit as stunning as Raquel Welch or Faye Dunaway
A lot of wives let themselves go as they age and also turn into total bitches, and then they do not understand why their husbands leave them.

Jolene looked like Emma Stone tho
@@Mariose123 I was thinking more like Bryce Dallas Howard, she’s a real redhead beauty. Emma stone is a natural blonde lol

Dolly Parton is a national treasure.

Hi you got a nice profile picture
I wonder how outstanding Jolene looked, if woman as beautiful as Dolly "couldn't compete with her". It's beyond my imagination.
Jolene might not be as beautiful as her, but she was just complementing her to back off.
that wasn't the point of her calling Jolene beautiful. Jolene might have been a vixen, and those types of people live to break up relationships. She is admitting she is inferior to Jolene in hopes that Jolene doesn't take her one and only love.
maybe jolene is just fiction...
There's a series on Netflix about 8 the top dolly Parton songs

No excuses for another girl being more beautiful or something.

Mind you both versions are based on real event : Beyoncé with "Becky with the good hair" and Dolly with Jolene which is why in Dolly P from Beyoncé you hear Dolly P saying to Beyoncé that Becky reminded her someone she knew from à similar situation. The thing is Dolly is begging Jolene no to take her man cause she's just a woman who wants to have a family against the beautiful Jolene who has the beauty to take him any time while Beyoncé is warning Becky not to come again like she did or she won't live in peace like 10 years ago cause she is Beyoncé and has the ability to threat her live. True wow good observation and interpretation
Where were you when I had to analyse this song in English
Damn imagine what Jolene must look like for Dolly to be threatened by her lol
CS:GOCEANIC Dolly wrote this song back when her and Carl had only been married for a few years, apparently there was a secretary at Carl's place of work that kept flirting with him. He Almost gave into her flirts. Dolly found out and wrote the song.
Christina Hendricks is the only face I can imagine when I hear this song
My thoughts exactly.
Man. Probably the first Country and Western song I ever heard. Fabulous
Nah, She's in love with Jolene, lol. You don't say things about someone like that without having feelings.
@@IsaTehGothicMando WTF are you going on about? Just because she sang about not wanting this girl to take her man doesn’t mean she was in love with her.

Also, the whole stealing her man was a woman who went after Dolly's husband. So it is partially true
Just an amazing original, never to be duplicated
I wish I could insert a CD with this song on it directly in my head.
I I think MP3 download would be less hazardous to your mental status but I get where you're coming from. I mean where would the CD drive sit.....
Nope im old grumpy and like country music
Sylas Krell I’m sorry about my weird comment, I was feeling woozy after getting bitten by a White Snake
My dad had his memory removed via a CD, it is extremely risky to practice this maneuver, he was hospitalized for several days...please be careful
I see what you did there, brigs back not so sweet memories
2:04 I always cherished that subtly flaunted little flip in voice register, it’s breathtaking. What a perfect way to complete the bridge. That little detail, to me, goes so far in regards to the pleading nature of the lyrics.
Dolly is the absolute best! 💚💚
This song makes me want to go to jail in Florida
Edit: A year and some change later my beautiful daughter is born with her middle being name Jolyne. Pretty happy to see Stone December 1st of this year with her. Not really looking forward to THAT scene though. Yare Yare dawa.

Yare yare dawa..
yes.. but i bet a priest with a crazy hairstyle whould hate this song
So. If Dolly's man in this song is so easily swayed by Jolene, we have one of two scenarios on our hands:
Toxic love.
Definitely the second
If you are trying to steal Dollys man, then it has to be #2. HAS to be.
