People always credit "Home Sweet Home" as the first power ballad, which was released in 1985. Fade to Black was put out in 1984, and based on song structure and the acoustic guitar, it quite possibly might actually be the first true power ballad. Granted it's about a rather macabre subject, but that's fitting for a band called METALLICA, don't you think?
Cliff is missed, for sure. But people seem to forget, that Lars was the composition-engine of Metallica in the 80's. I had a chat with Flemming Rasmussen once, and according to him, Lars had the main ideas for all the classics, and he came up with most of the choruses and melodies. Cliff was talented, and he co-wrote more and more by every album, but in the end, it was Lars who created the magic, while James & Cliff (and Dave on the first album) contributed as well.
Mickey Holm that just isn't true! hahaha. James had hit the lights written before he joined Metallica, Mustaine had written, Mechanix/Horsemen, Jump in the fire, Metal Militia and Phantom lord. Thats a HUGE chunk of that first album. It is common knowledge Hetfield is the main song writter in Metallica. He's a guitar player it makes sense, 90% of metal songs start with a riff ... Thats how Sabbath done it, Metallica, Megadeth ... most rock bands start with a riff its the most logical way to write a song. Lars had a great input in the arrangment of the music but actually writing it? James was the engine.
@@MattPhyz not saying your wrong I actually agree with you on most points but Lars did right some of the riffs. James in an interview that Lars would hum riffs and most of them used in songs.
CLIFF!!!!!!!!! dude, i listen heavy metal thx to a"Master of Puppets" tape i bought when i was 6 and listened over and over agin on my walkman.........i miss you so much!!!
that solo riff is the best riff ever written that solo is the best ever this is the best band ever Metallica i remember learning this song on bass it still is my fav Metallica song to play ahead the 4 horsemen seek & destroy and Orion
You know what's nuts? This song is coming up on being 30 years old. Show me anything done in the last 30 years that approaches this level of metal genius.
Where does the time go? This vid is the day before my dad died! How can it be so long ago! Time flies by way to fast! Twentyfive years amazing! RIP Cliff!
Has any of you guys noticed that so many times, he headbangs at half the speed of the song/drum beat. I wonder what he was hearing in his head while playing. Bet hes heaving a blast up there with Dime.
A spotlight on everybody except Cliff.... If they only knew what was about to befall on the band soon... *R.I.P.* Cliff... You are missed tremendously!!
good too see some one actully replyed to me XD some even said swear cool :))) still i think all the albums after 94' are rubbish guys sorry no zip it ...
Wow, James's voice was much streonger and clearer live than it was on the albums back then. Spose it's the production really ain't it. God I love this band.

+hurpDurp1000 Fucking agreed. Everything Metallica did in the 80's was great. The songs, the live shows, the attitude were just perfect.
Judas Priest released Stained Class, which has Beyond The Realms Of Death on it in 1978, so metal already had power ballads before even Fade To Black
This is the best live version I've heard. Cliff does a lot of funky stuff you can hear good.
+raysdga i heard it, so nice...
absolutly the best live stuff ever Cliff was the leader from Metallica with he,s best friends Hetfield Ulrich.
Cliff was the only one that had an education in music theory. You know they learned a lot from him.
you dont get it, Cliff was not just a bass player, he was the musical brain of the band, the most educated composer of em all
Bass from Cliff its like a golden melody to my ears........................
musical God
True fans of Metallica liked this video..
Posers disliked this classic video
I don't think posers would even know about this video
This is kirk's most accurate fade to black solo ever. I love this
Back when Lars was an awesome drummer, Great perfomance! \m/ R.I.P Cliff \m/
He's still are!
Saw Cliff in 85 they opened for Ozzy at Popular Creek
damn that is AMAZING
Fun fact of the day the reason For this song is because of how Sad james was when his amp got stolen
well all of their equiptment were stolen in their van. not just an amp.
+George Gibson James specifically wrote it thinking about his amp though
His mom bought him an amp before she died and it was stolen.
@@carsoningersoll1542 that’s kinda fuked up
GoodBye Cliff :'(
I pray if there is a heaven that Cliff is there if and when I get there.
The bass in this is completely insane, incredible.
rest in peace, Cliff

The official report was black ice although none was ever found. He died during the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, sometime late in 1986.
Has any of you guys noticed that so many times, he headbangs at half the speed of the song/drum beat.
I wonder what he was hearing in his head while playing.
Bet hes heaving a blast up there with Dime.
The original members were James Hetfield (guitar and vocals), Lars Ulrich (drums), Dave Mustaine (guitar) and Ron McGovney (bass).
This is the best moments with metallica riffs....it fade to black

A spotlight on everybody except Cliff.... If they only knew what was about to befall on the band soon... *R.I.P.* Cliff... You are missed tremendously!!
best song off of ride the lightning
Think about it. Cliff Died in '86, so their music is played a lot deeper and such to honor the grieving of Cliff's death. No wonder they changed.
@chiminari me imagino a Cliff Burton con la banda de estos días...sería aun mas espectacular...pero por algo falleció...Está tocando para dios...
woaw thats amazing
R.I.P. Cliff
