Chad, good to see you've finished the bark roof ... Congratulation ! I have another small suggestion for strengthen the roof : make some 3-4 rings like the basic structure and put it on top the final layer of bark roof and tie these rings down to the structure to avoid hi-winds from blowing away the bark roof. Secondly, a heavily weaved mat is suggested as the door of your hut. Hope these 2 can do some help or inspiration to improve your hut ! Good Luck and looking forward to your next episode !
You have a good point there. One could just make some rings and set them on the roof. This would allow you to add in some more bark and just slip it under it. As for a door one could just bend a frame out of the same branches and then place a mat inside along with adding in some more bark to fill it out. This method as a circle could be used to make a sun shield for the summer.
That's a good idea. I had thought of doing that but I really don't think it is necessary. The juniper bark sticks together well despite the wind. Over time it will flatten and get more compacted. Regarding the door, I am planning to do exactly what you suggested. Thank you!

That sponsorship was so brilliantly shot, it looks just like an ad they would use! The production in these videos keeps getting better, and I’m so glad the Primal Tendencies series is here on UA-cam for all of us to enjoy! :D
Chad Zuber!!! Surprised me totally with a new video so soon. Thank you for your hard work. That was one heavy load you carried! Very nice to see the roof giving you the much needed protection. Tiles next ? 👍👍👍👍 But I noticed your heavy breathing. Do take care of yourself. 👍
Thank you! But please do not be concerned about heavy breathing. Does an olympic runner not breath heavily after a one mile sprint? Does a wrestler or boxer not breath heavy after five minutes of continuous combat? It's just exercise. I carried that load nearly half a kilometer. It was tiring but certainly it wasn't deadly.
I don’t know how long they live. I think they probably live over one hundred years. They provide lots of nutritious berries for many wildlife and humans too. Lots of shade and protection from harsh weather. When they die the bark is used by many animals for nests. Birds use the bark. Mice and rats also make nests out of the bark.
When you do make the tile floor, be sure to insulate it from the ground to avoid losing that precious heat. Juniper bark shredded and fluffed (or a dry grass if it is in abundance) would work nicely to create little pockets of air between your tiles and the earth thus helping retain heat.
Wow!!! The hut looks excellent!! It is exciting to see you moved into your new home. The roof looked as hard as I figured it would be making it, but looks excellent. A tile floor will be great, looking forward to see how you accomplish this task. Does not sound easy, because you can’t run down to the nearest Home Depot LOL! I know it will look fantastic and work perfectly. The pottery you have made has been super useful and looks beautiful. Great job. The rhyolite stones you brought down from the mountain are very interesting. The large on looks perfect for a food preparation table. A place to grind or prepare food. Also, I am not sure how it would work there but I was thinking that maybe you should make a travois to carry things, especially large or heavy things. I thought about one when you were carrying the juniper bark. On that note , the juniper bark has been such a blessing. You have shown how many different things can be used to accomplish tasks. It has been successfully used in so many things. Your bathing looked like it worked perfectly, and I am sure it made you feel so good. It is good that the spring does not receive direct sunlight, that must be why it stays so fresh. It looked like it was flowing a little bit. Thank you for showing appreciation to God’s wonderful creation., our home and universe. It is all wonderful!
Yes, I really am looking forward to making a tile floor with clay tiles. It will take some time to complete but will be well worth the effort.... There is a lot of rhyolite on the mountain. I will be bringing down a lot of rhyolite. I do intend to make a mortar out of one for grinding dry foods.... It is actually easier to carry items in my arms because the terrain is irregular and full of vegetation and rocks. A travois only works on flat fairly smooth terrains.
Wow chad can't believe how well the huts coming along. I think the tile floor will be interesting to see! I tried a little bit of bushcraft with my nephew over the past month or so and it's definitely a task so I give you the utmost respect considering how hard it truly is.
cool to see you have a roof now even if its not all the way finished yet . also nice to know there is places that allow you to do this kinda stuff with out the government stepping in and giving you grief .

This series shows that one man with knowledge, skills, and the drive to survive and thrive can make it. It really makes me wonder how groups of people with these same traits lived. They must have had it good, less complicated than our modern lives.
Hi Chad! I'm so happy to see this video. I've been curious about the roof. One suggestion: make a few of those hoops to go over the bark. We get strong winds here where I live (semi-desert environment.) I imagine those top layers might blow away in a high wind. Just a small suggestion for your tremendous work! Good journey, my brother.🤗
Thank you Katherine! I guess this must be a really good idea to make the hoops. A lot of people have suggested it. I thought of it long ago too but I don't think it will be necessary. My experience with the small shelters has shown that the bark won't blow away in the wind.
I think you may want to secure the bark in some way after the layer is thicker. It might not seem like the wind can blow it off, but strand - by -strand over time it may loosen up and lose thickness over time, especially when the stormy season comes. I think the best (as in least time and energy consuming) way would be to make another set of willow rings to put on top of the bark on the outside, and secure it with cord to the main frame inside.
That's a very good idea and something I thought of a long time ago. When I made a juniper bark roof for my first shelter I thought the stormy winds would blow it off but they didn't. There is also some wind protection here from the nearby juniper trees and maybe the contour of the land. I'm not sure exactly why but the winds blow much stronger on the mountain. But the willow rings is a good idea to add security to the roof. I probably will do that but I do want to make the roof thicker as well.
Hi Chad, Have you thought in the future, to make a roof of clay tiles?? You have clay resources, the only thing you need is a lot of time to prepare. The shingles would be better able to hold both heat and moisture... And in general, you are a great guy, everything you do is just incredible... Greetings from Russia
Hello Roman! How are you? I hope you are warm where ever in Russia you are. Yes, clay shingles would take time to make. I do plan to experiment with that idea however it may not be necessary. I will find out how well this thatched roof works.

Hello Chad, do you plan on making some sort of rain catcher? Or any other method to store up water so you don't have to constantely go a carry a liter of water multiple times a day? Seems like all that time spent getting water could be used in much better way. Keep up the great work with your new hut, looks amazing!
Yes, I do plan to make a lot of clay water containers. They will take time to make but little by little I will accumulate containers for capturing and storing water. Fortunately the spring is very close but the river is kind of far.
Wow. Looking how many things you have done. Your hut look great like how you have your roof you have done. How much I love your channel. Can't wait see what next. Your friend from USA.Take care.😀💗
Amazing what God provides! That "soap" is about as natural as it comes. I can hardly believe how well it cleaned your hands! As for the roof, I bet with the multiple layers, that will be fairly insulated and should keep you warm on those chilly evenings. Are you thinking of doing a juniper frame door with more bark woven?
Yeah, yucca soap works really well. Yeah, the roof is already effective to hold in heat and I will add more layers still. I am planning to make a door with juniper bark too. Actually I'm going to make a few different doors for different seasons. For example, in the summer I will want a short door just to keep out critters.
I would suggest laying a thick layer of juniper bark on the ground before your tiles to create a thermal break from the ground so your floor retains heat
Thanks for the suggestion. The problem I see with that idea is that I need a mortar to lay the tiles on. Juniper bark would cause the tiles to not be firmly situated in the floor and that could lead to breakage.
Hi chad, do you think it is time to start to craft iron tools (or other kind of metal idk). I have watched all of this serie in about 2 weeks and all this time i wait for iron stuff. Diging all of this hard earth without iron tools is incredible to me. Did you want to finish the hut before winter and iron would make it late or you didn't find an iron ore place?
What! There is so many iron ore in my parents village. I though it isnt that rare. Also" primitive skills " channel find enough to make so many tool. You can check it out so you will see.
From all that I've read iron was not used by natives in North or South America until the Europeans brought it here. I have never significant quantities of iron ore.
I have to say, that sponsorship you did was beautifully shot and well performed. I'll keep that table in mind when looking for a replacement soon haha!
I appreciate your kind comment. Many people were upset that I did an ad. I've done several ads in the past few years. I don't see what the problem is. I actually turn down 90% of the offers I receive because I don't believe the product is that good.
"This is another example of how God's creation provides for all of our needs." I couldn't agree more, Chad! Our God is so gracious. If only humanity didn't get greedy.
It is easy to prevent your roof mats from sliding off by using a short piece of wood with a little bit of branch sticking out, it looks like a hook. Just push it through the mat where it crosses a support. In the UK they use a similar method to secure natural (reed) roofing on traditional buildings.;-)
nice work, first I like how you do your work and the roof look nice I see you doing nice work. keep it up and thank you for all you work videos and all you do. have nice day and keep the good work.
If the roof needs a bit more to hold it all together when you're done (which I know you said it probably won't, but just in case) - maybe another ring of willow around the outside? Especially if you secure that ring to the inner structure somehow, so it helps compact the bark a bit. Can't wait to see your door and floor, too!

@@ChadZuberAdventures Hahaha, 👍 of course, eased my mind now. 👍👍👍
@@ChadZuberAdventures was really happy that you got a sponsor
Thank you! I appreciate that. I receive offers am the time but most I reject.

It really gives food for thought on how much that one tree has given
I don’t know how long they live.
I don't think I will do that because the tiles need mud to adhere to. I want to adhere all the tiles to a clay base.
That refreshing wash was a fair reward for the hard work!
Yes, it really felt good to clean my hands, arms and face.
This guy is a living legend
A cada vídeo seu, vemos verdadeiramente como é a sobrevivência do ser humano na natureza... Parabéns Chad👏👏👏

Wow chad can't believe how well the huts coming along. I think the tile floor will be interesting to see! I tried a little bit of bushcraft with my nephew over the past month or so and it's definitely a task so I give you the utmost respect considering how hard it truly is.
That’s great! Teach the kids while they’re young because once they get entrapped by the snares of society it’s difficult to get them out.
I Chad, thank a lot for this wonderful experience.
I love this life stile, but here in Sicily in not possible make this exerience.
Good bless you.
It's not possible in most cities but only in the wilderness.
Hello Chad Zuber, send hugs from Brazil! We watch you!
Muito obrigado Dan! Um forte abraço para meus amigos do Brasil!
cool to see you have a roof now even if its not all the way finished yet . also nice to know there is places that allow you to do this kinda stuff with out the government stepping in and giving you grief .
Thanks!
Wow we've seen him find rabbits and cows and different berries to eat, but a plastic table!? That's a pretty crazy find. This man.
You never know what the tide may bring in.
Man I was surprised when I saw ice, the terrain doesn’t look winterish yet idk how to describe it.
It hasn't rained in a while but the nights have been freezing.
I like seeing people sponser you! The growth is insane!

Adorei.
Bom dia!
Sou do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, no sul do Brasil, estado q faz divisa com o Uruguai e Argentina.
The Banana Yucca fibers is a GREAT bit of information as well. Thanks Chad!!!
I'm glad you find this information useful!
Wow Surprise upload? I love it man. Aslong is not burden to you. I am okay with the usual schedule, even if you late is okay! but to videos in a week! I'm excited. Even though the soap plan is not native in my region I guess if I go to america and doesn't have soap now I know what to lol.
I'm trying to upload more frequently. Now that I'm not spending most of my time making bricks I should be able to make more videos... There are a number of different plants around the world that can be used as soap. Saponins are common in many plants.
Great vid and congrats on the sponsor, brother!
Thanks bro!
Your videos are so good, i really enjoy it!!
Glad you like them!
This guy is umbelivable!!! I love himm
すごいです。大変でしたそうです。お疲れ様です。

Hi Chad, Have you thought in the future, to make a roof of clay tiles?? You have clay resources, the only thing you need is a lot of time to prepare. The shingles would be better able to hold both heat and moisture... And in general, you are a great guy, everything you do is just incredible... Greetings from Russia
Hello Roman! How are you? I hope you are warm where ever in Russia you are. Yes, clay shingles would take time to make. I do plan to experiment with that idea however it may not be necessary. I will find out how well this thatched roof works.
@@ChadZuberAdventures Thank you very much for the reply, it is very nice when a person with such a large audience coverage responds to you.. This is incredible, and they raised my spirits for the rest of the day)) we have warmth, I live in the South of Russia, even in winter it does not snow so often)) I am waiting for new releases
@@romanugloff6913 I'm glad you are warm then. Maybe we have similar temperatures. I'll see you again soon.
@@ChadZuberAdventures At the moment, we are now +3 degrees Celsius, and to be honest, I can’t imagine how it is possible to be outside the house with practically no clothes at such a temperature.. I have already said and I will say again "you are incredible"
Oh but it’s like 15 C here during the day
I hope you are staying warm out there Chad. It's been frigid on the east coast.
It’s not nearly as cold here. Thanks and stay warm.
@@ChadZuberAdventures Good! Thank you.
Thanks a lot Emily! There are going to be a lot of new exciting things coming this year so stay tuned!
Im love Your videos
Great job the roof looks strong and durable and the interior has become very cozy I can't wait for the next improvements I greet you Chad
Thanks, I'm excited for what's next.
Esse lugar onde você faz os seus trabalhos e bem interessante, tem diversas formas de coleta de alimentos
Sim, é muito interessante.
Good luck and have fun.
Its incredible to follow your journey.
Thank you so much
Hi chad, do you think it is time to start to craft iron tools (or other kind of metal idk). I have watched all of this serie in about 2 weeks and all this time i wait for iron stuff.
Diging all of this hard earth without iron tools is incredible to me. Did you want to finish the hut before winter and iron would make it late or you didn't find an iron ore place?
This isn't minecraft lol. You can't just find iron on a random hillside and quickly make iron tools.
Thank you, and thank you Pecos

I have to say, that sponsorship you did was beautifully shot and well performed. I'll keep that table in mind when looking for a replacement soon haha!
I appreciate your kind comment. Many people were upset that I did an ad. I've done several ads in the past few years. I don't see what the problem is. I actually turn down 90% of the offers I receive because I don't believe the product is that good.
congratulations, you should be so proud of your hard work, it's amazing

Exactly. We are so greedy, never satisfied, always lusting for more pleasures and comforts.
But God submissive to politicians n the power of money, bro😂
Looks warm and dry ..great job your a great craftsman and bushcrafter
So far so good
@@ChadZuberAdventures glad to hear it
It is easy to prevent your roof mats from sliding off by using a short piece of wood with a little bit of branch sticking out, it looks like a hook. Just push it through the mat where it crosses a support. In the UK they use a similar method to secure natural (reed) roofing on traditional buildings.;-)
Oh yeah, that would work excellent.
Chad you are a legend.
nice work, first I like how you do your work and the roof look nice I see you doing nice work.
keep it up and thank you for all you work videos and all you do.
have nice day and keep the good work.
Thank you!
One word, impressive!
Thank you for that compliment!
If you pack a light layer of mud on top of the juniper bark you should get a near perfect water/wind seal. :)
Okay, several people have suggested this and maybe I'm just dumb but won't the mud just get washed away by the rain?
Making a thatch roof out of the juniper bark would be a very interesting video to watch
the bark roof was excellent, the fireplace was great, I'm going to make a shelter similar to yours, but a simpler big hug.
Go for it! You will learn a lot.
@@ChadZuberAdventures thanks
Most anticipated video to date. The suspense was killing me!
I hope you enjoyed it!
Nicely done looking forward to the completion and the next project
If the roof needs a bit more to hold it all together when you're done (which I know you said it probably won't, but just in case) - maybe another ring of willow around the outside? Especially if you secure that ring to the inner structure somehow, so it helps compact the bark a bit. Can't wait to see your door and floor, too!
Yes, that's a good idea. I'll probably do that. It won't take too much time.
