Shelley Long Unrecognizable After Skipping ‘Cheers’ Reunion 2024

- She was the light of Sam’s light, a sweet dose of reason and dismay at the bar. But Diane Chambers gelled with the staff and patrons of Cheers very differently than Shelley Long got along with the cast… or, didn’t. Did she leave Cheers with bad blood? Was that why she wasn’t at the much-anticipated Cheers reunion at the Emmys?

THOUGHTS ON THE FRASIER REBOOT?
It wasn't Terrible, but not that great either.
It was terrible. I was disappointed and I really tried to give it a chance (and I loved the original)
It SUCKS
Kind of wish Fredrick was gay. But whatever. Liked when Roz came back
Sometimes it's just bet to let sleeping dogs lie.
We’re all allowed to get old.
We all get old. Problem is men age like Sean Connery. And women age like Sean Connery also!
ahhhh,,,ha ha ha ,,,,o man wow thanks.!@@andrelockridge9109
Society allows and supports men growing old. Women are punished and made fun of for growing old. They act like we had a choice in the decision.
@@andrelockridge9109 Doh! 😅
@@andrelockridge9109I am older woman and I agree 🤣
I preferred the first years of cheers with Diane, I loved her high pseudo intellectual snobbery that was going to teach every one at cheers how to suit her kind of person
Excellent analysis and commentary of Shelley's characterization of Diane.
I think we've all known a Diane, female, or male.
Those WERE more challenging programs.
Ms. Alley’s time was spent on “I Love Lucy” types of works. “She’s so whacky”, repetitive, difficult to experience, real nonsense.
It became a parody of itself (“SNL”, anyone?).
Still, either way, I’d prefer those “Cheers” shows to almost all of the crap being offered nowadays.
Ah well. “C’est la vie”. 🤔😐
I just binge watched it and the dynamic with her and Sam was great. But I have to say the writing was good for the later years also.
Loved Shelly Long in Night Shift and my personal favorite The Money Pit. Simply Awesome 🤘😎🤙
“Cue the deer cue the deer!” 😅
Omg loved the money pit!!!
We love you Shelley. I hope she is well and happy.
She’s aged. It does happen (even in Hollywood)!
I like your good tidings, though. She’s always seemed to be a genuine, real, person & I hope she’s enjoying herself as much as any other. Good comment, “Wistful”! 👍😊
@@JosephMartin-sj3kz Thank you. It's from the heart.
Gee what a shock! We all get old and our appearance changes. Who'd have thought?
Kirstie was outrageously hilarious & beautiful.
She was the TV Commercial Spokeswoman for Home Makers Funiture.
Here in the Chicagoland area back in the late 70's. When she started to get famous she cane back and did a couple more commercials for them.
(It was very nice of her.)
Also, Garry Coleman got his start in commercials for 1'st. Metropolitan Builders.
Again, in the Chicagoland area in the late 70's. I remember them fairly well. They were always on TV. Especially, Saturday mornings and afternoons.
I keep thinking that Shelley Long is still somewhere, looking the same and not a day older than when she appeared in Cheers.
ahhh no juse saw her in a movie not to long ago..full Mom now but that is a ok !!
We age. It happens. I always liked that Bettie Page (the “Pin-Up Queen”) stopped, moved on to (some good, some tragic) other things, & wouldn’t stand to be photographed again.
She wanted to be remembered as the beauty of her professional career prime.
Then again, we didn’t have the social media outlets & big dollar offers from corporations that we now do. Hmm. 🤔
Whatever, I find hers to be a romantic (in some ways) show of dignity. An inspiration, actually. Either way, people age. Ah, well. 😊
She was good in her part! Loved her.
Her guest appearances on Fraiser were fantastic. I saw that show as a kid, even before i saw Cheers. And she still left an impression on me.
She was terrific in The Money Pit
Horrible movie
Outrageous Fortune and Night Shift.
What a shame I can’t look exactly the same 50 yrs down the road, especially be expected to look as I did when I had makeup artists and hairdressers to attend to every moment & need, since I had a TV series and a very public persona. After all, as a well known TV star, surely the public must know I’m not a regular, real human being, subject to aging and various other mortal maladies. It’s not fair!!
Seems they expect Grandmas to be all nick and tuck anymore.
Always adored Shelley Long.
Outrageous Fortune is hilarious. Shelley and Bette Midler were a great pair of talents.
I loved it, and George Carlin’s cameo was hilarious.
@@williamhanna4823 If he his part was longer, he would have stolen the show.
One of my favorite movies, love it. So funny.
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
That show was so much fun, and I'd forgotten how pretty she was.
I am team Diane! Shelley's chemistry with Ted was evident to be real.
Awesome. I loved cheers show
She’s living as she likes. Yes she was quite the beauty. But everyone should be able to get old as they like.
This was great...always like her
Sam & Diane loving/fighting scenes were the peak of 80's comedy... and were never repeated.
This video had practically nothing to do with the title. I hate that. It was a great documentary of Shelly Long's tenure on Cheers, and it would have been fine if the title reflected that. I just hate being deceived.
Same here. If you haven't downvoted and reported the video for misleading text / description, then do so.
Just “clickbaiting”. Everyone seems to be just fine with it. Why?
So deceitful. Such lies. Yet, nobody pays it any mind. You’re correct. It IS annoying. It IS wrong! 😐
Don't most of us look unrecognizable after aging over 40 years?
Carrie Fisher quipped that she didn't know that fans expected her to look exactly the same decades after she appeared in the original "Star Wars" trilogy.
We age. It happens (even in the famed “HOLLYWOOD”. Good for Ms. Long. We need to start appreciating such PERSONS. She’s perfect just being Shelley Long. That’s who she is & (speaking for me, anyway) she’s so beautiful! 👍😊🩷
I was shocked when Shelly left "Cheers"!!
But, as soon as Kirstie showed up & did her crying jag, I was like, "OMG!!! She is perfect!! I love her!!! We will miss Shelly, but not as much as I 1st thought!!"
I loved the way Kirstie looked & sounded!!
Shelley Long is very special because she is one of the few female actresses who can bring humor, Marilyn Monroe is also on that list, imo.
I recently re-watched the entire Cheers series. The show was better when Shelly was on.
So did i....
Absolutely not…. Found her whining to much… then when she got pregnant became more annoying……..
I loved cheers show🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰...................
Julia Duffy would have been great in the part. On Newhart she managed to be stuck up arrogant and out of touch but never abrasive.
The Diane character was meant to be abrasive. It wouldn't have worked with a Julia Duffy type character. She was designed as a foil for Sam and Carla and specifically to get on their nerves
I loved them both
Me too!
It’s like comparing apples and oranges. They were both good in their own way.
So where's the fountain of youth you must have found???
People age. Some even age naturally.
Are you nuts??? It's The Money Pit!!! Where have you been??? 😜😂 I can recite every single line from that movie!!!
Shelley Long's journey from Cheers to her diverse film career and TV roles is truly captivating.
Nostalgic Nick, your voice is so soothing!
1. NIght Shift
2. The Money Pit
3. Troop Beverly Hills
Cheers was one of my favorite shows! Never watched a lot of tv but never wanted to miss Cheers, always good for a laugh which on some days was much needed!
Who are three people, who never been in my house? If you know, You Know...
Shelly is such a delightful beauty.
We Like The Kirstie Alley Episodes Although We Miss Coach. She's Funny Every Now & Then But Not For Five Years Straight. Do You Narrate Another Channel? Thank You. (Like #260)
I loved Shelley in Irreconcilable Differences!❤
Team Shelley Long!
"twelve years of Ballet Asshole" Shelley exclaimed in Outrageous Fortune, my favorite Shelly movie . Loved her and Sam.....GREAT TV.....CHEERS WAS BRILLIANT.....EVEN WITH REPLACEMENT KIRSTI......SHE WAS WONDERFUL TOO
“Ya, I got my period.”
Definitely preferred the Shelley Long years. As a comedian, she was extremely smart with impeccable timing. Her perfectionism paid off, it seems, in spite of people finding her difficult. Her performances were high quality. Never felt that way about Alley.
Thanks👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Troop Beverly Hills ❤😂
Loved her in caveman watch it regularly my kids love it to
That was so long ago. A very classic show. Several classic shows really. I would prefer they leave those classics where they are. In the beautiful space in our minds. it is completely unfair to all the actors to bring them back as seniors and expect the same sparks they had when they were young, strong and stupid. And beautiful. All of these great people have been through so much over the decades, i am just glad that most are still alive and doing well.
Shelly was funny on money pit and I loved RIP Kristy Alley 😢
The "will they or won't they" plotline has been done in so many shows. I think Shelly Long and Kirstie Alley both had their strengths.
I never really cared for Kirstie Alley on Cheers. Shelley Long stole that position by doing Dianne so well.
I remember Shelley when she was selling furniture in Chicago on local TV just before she got her break on Cheers. She was a fool to leave the show.
Shelley was brilliant on Cheers and she is still a beautiful woman.
LOVE THE VIDEO. YOU FORGOT, DON'T TELL HER IT'S ME WITH STEVE GUTTONBERG. ONE OF MY FAVORITES. IT ALSO HAS ANOTHER NAME AS WELL. TROOP BEVERLY HILLS WAS THE BEST!
I, think that the writers took it as far as it was to go with, Shelley, and they ended it with, Kirstie Alley, exactly where it should have ended. That was genius writing and production on their part.
Kirstie Alley was great on Cheers: but Dianne was my favorite. Probably because “Diane &Sam” reminded me of me, and my girlfriend at the time.
I look at Diane leaving Cheers the same way I look at Major Burns leaving M*A*S*H* after a number of seasons. Both actors figured out that their characters had nothing left to do, and it reinvigorated the shows they were on by almost "rebooting" the show half way through it's run. I thought she did a great job on playing Mrs. Carol Brady in the Brady Bunch movies in a hard role, as Florence Henderson brought that iconic character to life, and Shelley did a great job channeling her while also bringing a bit of herself into the role.
Cheer was two shows: The Shelley Long version and then what I consider a reboot with Kirstie Alley. The two actresses were so different that it just wasn't the same show. Shelley and Ted shared a unique on-screen chemistry that was magical; Kirstie and Ted didn't have that (not their fault), so it took the show in different directions.
I loved both shows, but if I HAD to choose, it'd be Cheers 1.0: Shelley and Ted. And without that Cheers, Cheers 2.0 never would've existed.
She also was on Modern Family and my favorite movie she did was The money pit.
I THINK SHE IS WONDERFUL 😊
almost 10 minutes before getting to the point. i could have googled this. you lost one.
Where has all her beauty gone, Long time passing.
Probably to the same place yours has or will when you age.
When she had him in court was super funny
She's 74 years old !!!.Did you think the dew of youth lasts forever???
She sure was one beautiful Lady back in the day. I didn't watch Cheers until a lot later and I thought she was great. I also think it was time for her to go to get new girl in the show & new exciting storyline. I haven't seen the Frasier reboot. I did loved the show back in the day.
I like it. The difference between her and those still active in hollywood is called reality: those 'stars' have trainers, plastic surgeons, private chefs etc
You forgot to tell people she starred in Caveman with Ringo Starr.😮😮😮😮😮😮
Glad Shelley is ok.
@6:05 Shelly Long looks like she married a clone of Norm McDonald, it's crazy how he even has the same sarcastic smirk too
She was only able to get 1 role after her cheers stint, I believe it was the money pit...I may be wrong, but at the time the cheers series ended, it was a period of real tough competition, she was up against such stars like Julia Robert's, Michelle Phiher, Demi Moore, etc....Hollywood can be a cruel place & industry, the only ones able to sustain their careers were Ted Danson, Kelley Grammer, Bebe..Kelsey's girlfriend, rest of the crew was typecast, I believe one other had a role on startrack and did weight loss commercials. There is no guarantee of success, look at many child stars that do nothing after the role that made them famous! Many have died, sadly by suicide!
Wasn't Shelley Long in Irreconcilable Differences?
You forgot Woody Harrison. He was also able to make a big career after Cheers. Heck, he's been in just about everything.
She has another good movie where she plays a Diane type character who ends up leading a Girl Scout troop in Beverly Hills. It was a cute movie.
She had a role in Modern Family, even though it wasn’t an every episode appearance. She played Claire and Mitch’s mom; ex-wife of Jay.
She was funny
Lilith looks lime she aged 50 years
I like Smelly Long and Christy Alley. They played different women completely with Sam.
These videos are great, although I would prefer an actual human commentator. Robot AI or whatever it is is pretty disconcerting. Do better! Hire an voice actor please! With this many followers, I'm certain you can invest. It would make the videos so much more authentic!
Without a doubt...Kirstie Alley, she was funny, and not annoying..
The “Rebecca” character WAS annoying.
‘Course, “Cheers” had become like a bad habit by the time she was introduced (smoking, (ironically) drinking, etc.). We watched ‘cuz that’s just what we did on Thursdays.
The writers started to get lazy & the show was so stale by then (“why try when it’s SO profitable“).
“Rebecca” was a great idea, just poorly executed y the writers.
Not that Kirstie was to blame, her “whacky” adventures were just so hackneyed. “Rebecca” was annoying, not Kirstie.
Too bad, really. Kirstie was a great comedic actress. She could’ve “knocked it outta’ the park!, if given a fair chance. 😐
Reminds me of the rock group Van Halen, who did you like David or Sammy, my response Shelly and of course Sammy, Cheers was a better show when Shelly was on.
Who the hell are you to judge someone who looks age-appropriate? I guess it doesn't matter, as long as you get the views.
Weren’t the same without Shelly Long
she'll all ways be recognizable to me .
Diane never saw Sam and Carla kiss. That's a lie.
Also, another reason she left was because she didn't like Kelsey Grammar and wanted him fired.
Daaaayamn!!! Shelly short AF!!
Lillith?
Shelly Long character Diane was WAY better that Kirstie Allie and Rebecca
Why would you show a person getting a ring the right hand 6 minutes in
If you post a video with a snarky headline, you should count on getting a fair share of snarky comments. You've clearly done some careful research. Why waste it just to try to get a few extra views?
Men age like fine wine...on the other hand...
The seeming AI voice is UNBEARABLE.
So she looks a lot older than she did 40 years ago ? Imagine that huh 😂.
It ran its course..I agreed if she stayed the show would had ended sooner.
Shelly Long never did anything for me. Cheers was much more fun with Kirstie Alley.
Opposite for me 😃
Shelley Long years? - Creative. Challenging. Whimsical.
Kirstie Alley years? “Same ol’, same ol’”. Tired (& tirING). Goofy nonsense.
They each have their merits. It’s just that the Kirstie years were more typical than original.
Ah, well. “C’est la vie”. I like ‘em each better than half the shows (“reality”, “news worthy”, depressing, heavy “drama”) being offered nowadays! 👍
@@JosephMartin-sj3kz
Shelly Long left the show because she knew her role was boring.
Same here. Never cared for her. She was whiny and pompous.
Agreed!
Shelly is definitely recognizable and looks great. She's just no longer in her 20s.
Shelly long is ok.... That was 40+ years ago... She was in her 30s when she did this .. she looks ok for her age.
Always love Shelley!
Don't forget the movie Troop Beverly Hills.
She always reminded me of Marcy from Married with children. Just with slightly longer hair 😂.
what...no caveman mention? wtf, man!
Didn't she have severe mental problems several years ago?
Shelley Long was fabulous in Cheers and elevated Ted Danson's character from a "hound" to a conflicted man in love. Kirsty Alley's character was as superficial as Danson's and together their scenes were predictable and boring. The show without Shelley was flat.
I loved the earlier episodes of Cheers! but I never liked Kirstie Ally at all!
Kirstie (through no fault of her own) was a cartoon. The writing on “Cheers” started to be more plebeian than original after the “Coach” & “Diane” characters were gone.
“Woody” and “Rebecca” were like any other “whacky” characters from any other sitcom in the history of television (all the way back to “that “whacky” Ed on “The Honeymooners” - in the 50s!).
“Cheers” became like a bad habit. We watched it ‘cuz that’s just what we did on Thursdays. It was really bad In its dying days. 😐
Dang wtf happened to shelly long!!!
Voice work when you aged out like milk.
