I preferred the first years of cheers with Diane, I loved her high pseudo intellectual snobbery that was going to teach every one at cheers how to suit her kind of person
Those WERE more challenging programs. Ms. Alley’s time was spent on “I Love Lucy” types of works. “She’s so whacky”, repetitive, difficult to experience, real nonsense. It became a parody of itself (“SNL”, anyone?). Still, either way, I’d prefer those “Cheers” shows to almost all of the crap being offered nowadays. Ah well. “C’est la vie”. 🤔😐
She’s aged. It does happen (even in Hollywood)! I like your good tidings, though. She’s always seemed to be a genuine, real, person & I hope she’s enjoying herself as much as any other. Good comment, “Wistful”! 👍😊
Season 5 beginning Monday night on a channel that shows old sitcoms. Will never tire of Sam and Diane; I think that is thanks to Shelley.Deciding to leave preserved the quallity of the Sam/Diane love story. She was also in her late 30's by then and the window was closing on the time she could play a romantic lead. Kirstie Alley was a wonderful fit for the Cheers gang as both an actress and a person. But that first year of Cheers was really something and Shelley Long as Diane was really something else. It was a tour de force of great comedic performances by a female actress. We're talking Lucille Ball caliber. Hope she's content now and takes pride in her contributions to Cheers.
We age. It happens. I always liked that Bettie Page (the “Pin-Up Queen”) stopped, moved on to (some good, some tragic) other things, & wouldn’t stand to be photographed again. She wanted to be remembered as the beauty of her professional career prime. Then again, we didn’t have the social media outlets & big dollar offers from corporations that we now do. Hmm. 🤔 Whatever, I find hers to be a romantic (in some ways) show of dignity. An inspiration, actually. Either way, people age. Ah, well. 😊
She was the TV Commercial Spokeswoman for Home Makers Funiture. Here in the Chicagoland area back in the late 70's. When she started to get famous she cane back and did a couple more commercials for them. (It was very nice of her.) Also, Garry Coleman got his start in commercials for 1'st. Metropolitan Builders. Again, in the Chicagoland area in the late 70's. I remember them fairly well. They were always on TV. Especially, Saturday mornings and afternoons.
Wow. Yeah. You just took me back. Homemakers. I haven't heard that in ages. Chicago area all my life, but moved out of that area 20 yrs ago (already) I don't recall the Gary Coleman ads though.
What a shame I can’t look exactly the same 50 yrs down the road, especially be expected to look as I did when I had makeup artists and hairdressers to attend to every moment & need, since I had a TV series and a very public persona. After all, as a well known TV star, surely the public must know I’m not a regular, real human being, subject to aging and various other mortal maladies. It’s not fair!!
This makes me so happy that Shelley is ok...doing just fine. I cannot tell you how often I have thought about her over the years. I loved her while growing up. Behind the scenes rumours and frankly personal issues aside, her work was and will always remain incredible and what she did for so many families over those years ...... One cannot put a price on that kind of thing. We love you Shelley....always.
I was shocked when Shelly left "Cheers"!! But, as soon as Kirstie showed up & did her crying jag, I was like, "OMG!!! She is perfect!! I love her!!! We will miss Shelly, but not as much as I 1st thought!!" I loved the way Kirstie looked & sounded!!
Don't most of us look unrecognizable after aging over 40 years? Carrie Fisher quipped that she didn't know that fans expected her to look exactly the same decades after she appeared in the original "Star Wars" trilogy.
We age. It happens (even in the famed “HOLLYWOOD”. Good for Ms. Long. We need to start appreciating such PERSONS. She’s perfect just being Shelley Long. That’s who she is & (speaking for me, anyway) she’s so beautiful! 👍😊🩷
"twelve years of Ballet Asshole" Shelley exclaimed in Outrageous Fortune, my favorite Shelly movie . Loved her and Sam.....GREAT TV.....CHEERS WAS BRILLIANT.....EVEN WITH REPLACEMENT KIRSTI......SHE WAS WONDERFUL TOO
Cheers was one of my favorite shows! Never watched a lot of tv but never wanted to miss Cheers, always good for a laugh which on some days was much needed!
This video had practically nothing to do with the title. I hate that. It was a great documentary of Shelly Long's tenure on Cheers, and it would have been fine if the title reflected that. I just hate being deceived.
Just “clickbaiting”. Everyone seems to be just fine with it. Why? So deceitful. Such lies. Yet, nobody pays it any mind. You’re correct. It IS annoying. It IS wrong! 😐
Cheer was two shows: The Shelley Long version and then what I consider a reboot with Kirstie Alley. The two actresses were so different that it just wasn't the same show. Shelley and Ted shared a unique on-screen chemistry that was magical; Kirstie and Ted didn't have that (not their fault), so it took the show in different directions. I loved both shows, but if I HAD to choose, it'd be Cheers 1.0: Shelley and Ted. And without that Cheers, Cheers 2.0 never would've existed.
Definitely preferred the Shelley Long years. As a comedian, she was extremely smart with impeccable timing. Her perfectionism paid off, it seems, in spite of people finding her difficult. Her performances were high quality. Never felt that way about Alley.
I, think that the writers took it as far as it was to go with, Shelley, and they ended it with, Kirstie Alley, exactly where it should have ended. That was genius writing and production on their part.
I look at Diane leaving Cheers the same way I look at Major Burns leaving M*A*S*H* after a number of seasons. Both actors figured out that their characters had nothing left to do, and it reinvigorated the shows they were on by almost "rebooting" the show half way through it's run. I thought she did a great job on playing Mrs. Carol Brady in the Brady Bunch movies in a hard role, as Florence Henderson brought that iconic character to life, and Shelley did a great job channeling her while also bringing a bit of herself into the role.
That was so long ago. A very classic show. Several classic shows really. I would prefer they leave those classics where they are. In the beautiful space in our minds. it is completely unfair to all the actors to bring them back as seniors and expect the same sparks they had when they were young, strong and stupid. And beautiful. All of these great people have been through so much over the decades, i am just glad that most are still alive and doing well.
Thoughtful response. I agree. We already got to see Sam and Diane as an old happily married couple in the last episode of Season 5. Content with that memory.
She sure was one beautiful Lady back in the day. I didn't watch Cheers until a lot later and I thought she was great. I also think it was time for her to go to get new girl in the show & new exciting storyline. I haven't seen the Frasier reboot. I did loved the show back in the day.

The “Rebecca” character WAS annoying. ‘Course, “Cheers” had become like a bad habit by the time she was introduced (smoking, (ironically) drinking, etc.). We watched ‘cuz that’s just what we did on Thursdays. The writers started to get lazy & the show was so stale by then (“why try when it’s SO profitable“). “Rebecca” was a great idea, just poorly executed y the writers. Not that Kirstie was to blame, her “whacky” adventures were just so hackneyed. “Rebecca” was annoying, not Kirstie. Too bad, really. Kirstie was a great comedic actress. She could’ve “knocked it outta’ the park!, if given a fair chance. 😐

If you post a video with a snarky headline, you should count on getting a fair share of snarky comments. You've clearly done some careful research. Why waste it just to try to get a few extra views?
I preferred the Shelley Long years because the tension between the pseudo-intellectual and the working class was fun to watch. The hierarchies of academia and sports-so prevalent in Boston- clashed over and over in fun ways! Plus, Shelley is from my hometown, and it was fun to see someone so midwest try to hang with the Cheers gang. Could Diane really triumph in that environment? When she did well it was great, and when she was pommeled, it was great too. Rebecca was party girl and was never interesting to me. She was not a fish out of water at all in that place, so I didn't think the episodes were funny. I couldn't route for her, and she just seemed sad overall.
THOUGHTS ON THE FRASIER REBOOT?
It wasn't Terrible, but not that great either.
It was terrible. I was disappointed and I really tried to give it a chance (and I loved the original)
It SUCKS
Kind of wish Fredrick was gay. But whatever. Liked when Roz came back
Sometimes it's just bet to let sleeping dogs lie.
We’re all allowed to get old.
We all get old. Problem is men age like Sean Connery. And women age like Sean Connery also!
Society allows and supports men growing old. Women are punished and made fun of for growing old. They act like we had a choice in the decision.
