- Special effects company The Mill has come up with a technology so intruiging, we just had to give it a go. Meet the ‘Blackbird’, which is all about taking movie magic to the next level. It allows filmmakers to render any car they require over the top of a special rig, in ultra-HD realism, without the car itself having to go anywhere near the set.
Underneath the mass of cameras, sensors and matt black bodywork, the Blackbird is an electric car that can alter its track and wheelbase, plus the driving characteristics of its electric motor and suspension, to match any model your heart desires. Simply bolt on the right wheels, drive around (preferably like a lunatic) and computers far too complicated for our tiny little minds render the car on top, even matching the reflections to the real-world surroundings.

I was thinking the same thing like "well shit...."
You probably couldn't spot the difference in most cases for the past 5 years.
Essentially any time you see full traffic car chases it all gets done on empty roads and the "background" cars get added on top.
MsSomeonenew I have watched lots of movies on Netflix...I'm not just talking about newer movies.....example:although I don't know what year Volvo was used in one of those Sharknado movies,in one scene it had 2 headlights each side and the very next scene it had the facelifted single headlight each side,that's just one of many different examples like this that most people would miss.
I guess their will always be lower budget films to study.
If you look closely at the tires, you can see they don't have a realistic shadow.
When the camera moves to show the left side of the car, check the rear tire. See something strange?

They're still going to have to wreck real cars or have it cgi. They're not going to wreck the Blackbird
CGI physics simulations have become pretty accurate. Especially when you can input the vehicles specific materials and density.

This is a Topgear Magazine video. Nothing to do with Chris or the TV show. The guy in this video (Pat Devereux) has been working for Topgear Magazine since 1993 i.e. before modern Topgear TV even started..
Seybertooth Don't twist your knockers mate, I'm not a "Clarkson crybaby". It is entirely my opinion that I thought Chris Evans was utter sh*t at TopGear. I don't care about Clarkson, or May, or Hammond. They'll have their own show. This was just my opinion on Chris, nothing to do with Clarkson.

Clarkson himself announced on his Twitter _months_ ago that the show will be available worldwide, and air on actual tv networks, and not only Amazon Prime.
It is however assumed that Amazon would get it first, then TV months later though.

Maxim I don´t agree with that. When i Saw the mustang in the begining i instantly saw that it was CGI, but it was very very well done. But the prius was just crap.
I did also go back a few times really comparing the two, and my second, third, and foruth impression was the same.

Remember this almost definitely isn't the same quality rendering they'd do for a feature film
Remember that most cars you see in movies these days are CGI. Render/texture/lighting-wise you have a hard time distinguishing them from real objects, but what they usually fail at is the physics of cars if they have to do anything but run in a straight line. The Blackbird fixes that issue.

Bring back the old TOP gear we know and love
This thing has to be the best thing in movies for car guys. This means no more kit cars with LS that don't match the sounds of the cars they should have dubbed over it. Since this is electric they have to dub an engine sound over it so might as well try to dub the correct one. Plus imagine all the possibilities of cars we've never seen in movie before. I need to know how this thing works, time to find some articles.
The car is littered with tracking markers. Software track those points and generate the correct animation from it. Then VFX paint out the blackbird and apply the 3D model of the car they want back over it. The camera rig helps to match the correct reflections.
I love how this thing has a happy face on the front.
What if they do all car tests with this one? Nobody would notice :/
This thing is genius, especially with the cameras and lidar to map reflections.

They usually overdo the reflections... The cars look hyper-realistic, until you notice that they look like they’re chrome-plated... In their mission to make the car look neat, they overlook the need to dull it to a realistic degree. They always need to scuff it up a bit...

Wow, this is a new top gear video we all actually liked. Keep on bringing interesting content and slip in some jokes and innuendos into it and tada, you have an awesome show, won't be as good as the last one but it will do. You could do a new take on cars like you did in this episode though

Obviously not a Mustang as it comes around the corner. No excessive understeer or body roll and the back end didn't head for the curb. Think how many Mustangs Ford could sell if they actually handled like the image.

before I watched i thought it was a chassis that any car body could be mounted on. would have looked better but gets pricey I'm sure
So did I. But i guess that technicaly, with a chassis like this, you could slap on any kind of shape you want for the body kit. Only a one seater though :) Pretty neat nonetheless.

For a production company buying one of these is definitely much cheaper than renting the desired car every time you shoot a new scene or movie. So if I were in charge I'd invest in this
that depends, i can easily imagine that this car would be around the million mark, so work out the costs for yourself.
but if you want to use it for multiple expensive cars, you would save you money.
Blackbird belongs to special effects studio The Mill and it's not for sale, you hire the studio to do the effect work, and they bring the Blackbird along. But the availability is likely to be pretty good, i mean the guys really want to be hired rather than keeping their car out of harm's way, and it's already at the location where most movies and advertisements are shot.

The electric motor bit is interesting. One of the best features of electric motors is the ability to deliver full torque instantly negating much of the need for gearing whilst providing crazy acceleration. So to be able to dial in the performance characteristics of other cars is a very interesting development indeed. Elon Musk, if your out there, THIS is the feature that would make the low end Tesla an instant rev head favorite.

Actually people do get that...however, there's much better options than a Prius any way you look at it. There's far superior fuel only vehicles, there's also better options in terms of hybrids. There's even better fully electric options out there (although for some you may need to drive only in certain cities). So for either style or tech, the Prius should never be your first choice
The Unread Comment I'd agree if the Prius didn't cost so much less. It keeps a high resale value, is one of the most reliable cars, comes with fixed maintenance prices, decked out in features, etc. Investment wise, it's good, even better when bought used.
I don't see any reason to hate on it other than its appearance.

May it would be Possible, the Marssoil contains much Chemicals, that can be used as Fuel, but the same Chemicals make the whole thing more Complicate, because of it's Toxicity. That means that Planting Potatos in Marssoil, fertilized with own Shit could be pretty Toxic.
