...I just got the news that my baby is in level 4 kidney failure. I can't afford kitty dialysis, so this was offered as an alternative. Your video has given me heartbreaking confidence in being able to at least do this for my pet. Thank you
@kassandrasmith1385 I'm sorry..I wish you both strength. I stopped administering the SubQ after 3 days of failed attempts. She began running away and would panic even if I just wanted to pet her. It wasn't fair to either of us. I'm letting nature take its course and hope I recognize the time to say goodbye when it comes. Meanwhile, we cuddle a lot.
I watched several videos of vets demonstrating how to give IV fluids to one's pet. This was the most detailed. I was not placing the needle parallel to the skin, I was going in a little too vertical and the fluid did not flow very well. But when I inserted the needle at much shallower angle ( close to parallel) with the skin, then the fluids would drip much faster....Thank You for the video!!!
Also, you're going to most likely be surprised at how thick the skin is.. tonight is my 4th time doing this with our fur baby. The first time it was very hard to do, then it was easier. I like to do a motion like I am scooping, not dipping down and mack up again, but like you're moving your. Endless and hand THROUGH something , rather than into it. If that makes sense, like following through instead of into. It help you not hesitate as much. I felt so guru I hesitated the first time and that actually made it worse or hurt more for him. Just be quick with the poke! ❤
Was in ER with my lil Hercules and was told to go in at 45 degree angle...which wasn't happening. Myself and my whole family are infinitely grateful for you and this video. Prayers for everyone else and their fur babies
The Luer Screw-lock is super important with the needles and bags my vet provides, the needles don't stay on the live with just pressure/friction at all
A warning, I just administered subcutaneous fluids to my elderly cat for the first time. The bag I was using suctioned down instead of the water line decreasing, so we accidentally gave him ~3x what we were supposed to. It was much faster than they'd suggested. No significant harm done but not a good thing. Be cautious about trusting the marks on a flexible bag. Have someone with free hands check it by pulling on the long edges of the bag out, if you can, to get a truer reading during.
I found it significantly easier to use a 60 mL syringe and slow push the fluids in. I have a 20 year old cat and he can’t take much fluid at a time. I am a RN and know how to use the IV tubing but the syringe is so much easier, especially if you’re doing this without help.
What do you do when kitty just refuses? She growls, squirms, resists in every manner? Edit, see my response below. I forgot to add, however, that Rescue Remedy, once about .5 hr before, and again right before also has made it FAR better.
I'm here for the same question. Mine also pulls her neck tight, so you only scruff a tiny bit of fur. She'll also lurch back. I've tried her in all different areas, with treats, with a towel wrap. And I look like a fool when I go to the vet to get it done and she's totally normal.
@@vincentg6613 I've finally had success. It requires two people. Cat on a table, the one person holds her next to her body, with free arm over the other side. Therefore hands are free to give scratches etc... Then I do the poking, and then feed her as I go with my free hand. There were touchy moments, but I was determined to not let her direct the scene. Need to get this right as it's just too expensive at the vet. So while not perfect, it worked and she's fine. Best wishes. I also got skin off center, as I poked so many times in the middle I think she was sore. Now I'll alternate between the three.
Thank you very much! My cat just got diagnosed with CKD after going through 2 weeks with FLUTD. My cat's doctor advised me to give liquid treatment through sc once every 2 days. This guide really helped me and my cat! I can't thank you enough!! I used iv cath G26 to admit the liquid, because my cat moved so much I'm afraid the needle will change position😂😅
Hello. Such a handsome cat. What breed is he? You are so relaxed and skilled at doing this. My cat was just diagnosed with CKD. So I’ve just started giving subcutaneous injections at home. What I have found difficult is pushing the needle all the way into my cat’s skin. I’m not sure if my technique is correct or not, but when I try pushing the needle in it seems like it is not piercing the skin as easily as I expected. So I have made some failed attempts, then gave up.I need to go back to my vet to find out what I’m doing wrong.
Excellent video! I give my boy fluids every 3 days and he does very well with it. What I’m finding I’m having trouble w/ is the fluid leaking out after giving it to him. I try holding my finger on the injection site but sometimes it doesn’t work. Is there a better technique? How do you keep the fluids from leaking out?
I am just learning this process myself, and have not yet attempted it, but I found a video that may help solve your problem. Apparently it helps to pinch the cat’s skin at the injection site for about 30 seconds after removing the needle. Hope this helps. m.ua-cam.com/video/Y59QwigOF6Y/v-deo.html&pp=ygUhZ2l2aW5nIGEgY2F0IHN1YmN1dGFuZW91cyBmbHVpZHMg
Just lining up to do the first time on my girl cassie. She doesn't have a very good scruff - not unusual to get a bent needle on insulin injection. So I'll be doing it lower down her back. Dreading it, but she needs it so it's a case of 'feel the fear but do it anyway'. She's the only thing keeping me going at mo as recently lost my husband and am struggling.
It's hard to describe but the way my vet showed me is to pull up a generous amount of skin behind the shoulder blades to form the "tent" with your thumb and middle finger, so your pointer finger is then free to pull up and into the side of the tented skin where you're inserting, and that method creates a wider surface area of skin on the inserting side to push the needle into. And of course only using needles that are 1/2" to 1" maximum
I can't insert the needle 😭😭😭😭 it's so big and the fact that I have push pretty hard to get it in freaks me out. I'm worried I will insert too hard. The tech did demo in person and I recorded the steps but my hang up is the damn needle. I've given her insulin but that was a way smaller needle and a quick poke.
Forgive my American English: If there's no fluid in the drip chamber after connecting the tubing to the bag and closing the clamp "roller ball" then squeeze the drip chamber until it is about half full. Having sufficient fluid in the drip chamber allows you to see the drips. RN/Paramedic
Don’t worry! Just keep trying! Watch the video a few times that will help and other videos (sometimes different teachers have different little tips or can explain better to your style) and don’t worry you will get it!!!! REPETITION IS YOUR BEST TEACHER 🥳🎉🎉

Excellent! I’m nervous about doing this to my cat at home. I needed a confidence booster and this vid was informative and reassuring.

Treats and loves! There's only so much you can do, but association with treats or food can help

How do you make sure it doesn't poke through the other side?

Should it form a water blob inside the cat skin
My vet has told me they can get a “camel hump” of fluid from the injection. It should dissipate as the fluids are absorbed.
