    Just watched your video and it gave me the courage to administer fluids to our 16 year old dachshund in chronic kidney failure. Yes, the Vet showed me how to do it - but this was my first attempt at doing it at home. Your calm demeanor and brief to the point explanation did the trick. Thank you so much.

    This has helped me to understand, as today we go to the vet for our 17 year old dachshund to receive fluids, and I will be trained to do it once a week at home. Thank you for this video, my anxiety has been on overload, though I’ve been a caregiver all my life , in 1999 with my infant son, who passed due to open heart complications at five months, jobs have been caregiver ones-and husband is disabled. I need to be positive, just tired sometimes. Thank you all.

      @@19fenderman60 It does seem to help her keep hydrated so she is not so thirsty all the time and I sometimes also play "calming music for dogs" whilst doing the drip. As she is a little deaf, I play it loud and it really seems to help her when putting in the needle. Its still scary every time but the fluids do help the dog alot. :) I hope this helps a bit.

    I think this is a great video. Other vids suggest leaving the dirty needle on until the next fluid administration, but that may risk contamination. Glad this vet tech is offering sound advice.

      @@melissalozano9215 hi Melissa! My puppy made it through! He’s healthy and happy and acting like his normal self now. Keep in mind my puppy was around 7 months when he got sick. So he had higher chances of surviving. If your puppy is very young I’m crossing my fingers he makes it through! I’m happy to answer any questions if you have any since I went through the same thing you’re probably going through now.

      Marcie Vilches thank you marcie! My pup is 8 weeks old so I’m fighting and praying extra hard for him. I went through home care for him and constantly force feeding him and giving him IV and Pedialyte. He started to want to eat on his own. And had a little energy to play and walk around (he couldn’t even stand up on day 1 of parvo). My only worry is that he has not been able to poop. And I don’t know what to do. I know he’s not eating a lot but I was hoping he would poop by today and nothing. Any tips? Did your pup go threw this?

    Thank you for this. My dog has liver sickness for the 3rd time in her 3 years of life. I haven't had to give her subQ fluids in 2 years though. This was a very helpful refresher. Now if she would stop getting liver sickness. We think it's food related. We cut off treats and she's been fine! Then she went to the groomer, and within 72 hours, she got sick again. They likely gave her treats. My fault for forgetting to remind them NO SNACKOS. =

    I think you forgot to unclamp and check that it flows? Also, I would like to see covered how to finish a bag and start a new one. No one seems to cover that...also, how long a partially used bag can last, etc

    • @kiaharper7172
      @kiaharper7172 2 роки тому

      You can see in the tubing chamber if the fluid is flowing. You will see little drops falling from the bag into the chamber. Also when the bag gets low you would just pop the old one off and spike a new bag. Its easy.

    Thank you! We have been giving our little Jack Russell, Nugget, fluids for four days. I’ve been doing it exactly as shown in the video but she still squeals. She is muscular and doesn’t have a lot of lose skin so maybe it hurts her or she is being a drama queen? I know we have to do it, but we dread it.

    How long does it take and do I have to squeeze the bag or just let it drip on its own. Thanks

    • @EthosVeterinaryHealth
      @EthosVeterinaryHealth  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there. It depends on your pet's dosage of fluids to determine about how long it will take. We do not recommend squeezing that bag if you can help it. Too much pressure could upset an already nervous pet. If the needle is placed properly with the bevel side up, the fluid should easily enter the sub q space with a nice flow. If you are not seeing the flow of fluid, you might want to remove your needle, place a new needle on, and try again. It can take anywhere from 5-20 mins based on the amount of fluids needed to administer.

    • @EthosVeterinaryHealth
      @EthosVeterinaryHealth  3 роки тому +1

      With the cap carefully placed on the needle, you need to twist off the plastic hood that is on the base of the needle connecting the needle to the line. When you "unlock" this hood, you can carefully twist and pull the needle off. Be sure to hold the base of the needle rather than the cap itself. We also have another video on Sub Q fluids if you want to check that out. ua-cam.com/video/BXJwlxBSm2M/v-deo.html

    We have had the worst time giving our chihuahua fluids. It’s been awful. She screams and yelps and squirms. Then once she settles down a bit she cries for a minute or so. It is the most upsetting thing to go through everyday. We are at our wits end. She just refuses to tolerate it she we stay so stressed. We’ve never had a dog do this before when we had to give fluids in the past and we just don’t know what to do. Do you have any suggestions?.
