Excellent instructional video made “PHENOMENAL” by your detailed rationale for choices you made AND your demonstration of individual effects and sound samples of presets and banks! Wow! Thank you!!
Alex, I really like your videos. They are really professional. Got a HX Stomp for Christmas and should get a Morningstar MC 6 delivered this week. This video will help me out a lot configuring the MC 6.
Im not getting one but I do thank you for the info and the work you did on this vide very nice of you to put in the work to help people out. The only reason Im not getting it has nothing to do with the product it looks really good I just miss my helix lt and I might go back to that but I just want to says thanks to people like you who go out and help others with equipment.
Can’t believe they didn’t add led lights to the unit. It would be hard to tell on a dim lit stage what switch is active. Have to read the screens small text would be hard
Great video! One thing, it is known as a “Continuous Controller” and not a “Control Change”...if we’re getting nerdy about it. Could be confusing to someone who is reading their manual’s MIDI chart.
You have a midi cable from mc to hx stomp then to the others pedals, or you have set the out trs from your mc8 from midi trs to the other pedals? I can see you have 4 trs connections in your mc8 and the midi too
Yeah I believe I misspoke in this video - I have 3 TRS outs from the MC8 heading to the two Empress pedals and the Chase Bliss, then the Terraform and HX Stomp are chained with traditional 5-pin MIDI cables. At one point I had purchased a Disaster Area midi box to split out for the TRS pedals but I decided I just didn't need it and went with this method instead.
If you engage your ambient delay and you want to adjust the decay on the fly, can you reach to your delay pedal and do that? Or do you have to go on the computer and re program your morning star?
Yep! The knobs aren't motorized though so it's likely that the decay value will jump when you adjust it. For instance if it's maxed out for some reason but your preset has it stored at the opposite end of its range, the second you touch the knob it will reset the decay value to when the knob is now.
Hi , great presentation video ! Do you know if it's possible to send a MIDI Beat Clock to Echosystem by just using a TRS / DIN cable or if it's mandatory to use a MIDI Box ? Keep on doing videos
@@AlexPriceMusician My MIDI controller is MPC LIVE wich has MIDI OUT in DIN. No need to buy a MIDI box in that case you think ? Thanks a lot for the answer
Alex I also have a Stomp and an MC8 and I’m trying to figure out looper mode on the Morningstar ? Do you know if it’s possible to jump to different presets while engaged in looper mode on MC8 and not loose what you have looped?
Some of my pedals are capable of sending midi information. If I want to change presets on the HX Stomp and have it instantly recall a new preset in the Empress, connecting the chain lets me do that.
One question. Instead of setting up a dedicated 'clean' button on your MC8...couldn't you tap the same preset you ENGAGED to disengage all the effects? Haven't bought an MC8 yet, but almost like a toggle function. That's what I'm hoping to do.
Er- i think i understand why. if you're in your sub-pages and turning on various mod effects in the HX stomp, you can hit one footswitch to wipe them away. Makes total sense. Thanks for this video - i plan on setting mine up very similarly so you're saving me a lot of trial & error.
mc8 newb but how can you connect more than 4 midi compatible pedals to the mc8? is there an external box that lets you connect more and how many are possible? thanks
So, the MC8 have four auxiliary TRS outputs, however it also has a standard 5-pin midi out. From that midi out, you can daisy chain as many pedals as you need to. If you have more than four pedals that are looking for a TRS cable, you can either get an adapter to go from 5-pin midi to TRS, or get something like the Disaster Area Midi Box.
This is probably an obvious one but what type of action are you sending when you change from spring verb to your plate verb that makes your plate verb go on and the spring verb go off?
Scratch that, patience got the best of me. This is a very simple command. Thought it might be worth mentioning to HX stomp users out there that I found a way to expand your blocks within a preset. While the HX Stomp is capable of jumping between 2 max/min parameters, you can dial in the MC8 to do the same or even have it jump to parameters in the middle. This has allowed me to dial in my one delay block to be used as 3 different delay intensities. May be obvious to some but I thought it was a neat trick.
Yep - assign a control change message to bypass a block or affect a parameter of an effect. Then set the control change value to 0 (bypass), 127 (engage), or if on a parameter, anywhere in between.
Yeah exactly - you’d only be able to do this with the ML5. Theoretically if I wanted to though, I could actually use the FX loop in the HX Stomp like that. I didn’t find much of a need for that
There is no MIDI thru on the Empress pedals unfortunately. I think I misspoke briefly when I said they were chained in an order. The Empress pedals and The Chase Bliss are running off of the aux outputs on the MC8. The HX Stomp and Terraform are on the traditional MIDI jack.
Hey can you explain to me if you can program more than 8 presets on the terraform also how would you set it to turn one and off each effect just through midi thanks
Hi Lee - sorry I didn't see your comment until now. The Terraform can only store a maximum of 8 presets which in my opinion is a huge let down, though 8 is enough for me I think. I've set it up so that sending a PC message of 0 will bypass the unit and PC1 goes to preset #1, PC2 to preset #2, etc. When going from one preset to another, no need to engage the pedal as it will do that automatically.
@@AlexPriceMusician hey man just wondering if you can help me. I have a volonte and a terraform every time I try and save a preset on the volonte the terraform turns on too what am I doing wrong, thanks so much
I haven’t heard anything about that. Are you perhaps in edit mode? Certain functions like bank jump might not work. Have you downloaded to the latest software?
@@AlexPriceMusician yes everything is up to date. I plugged the device to the laptop and use the software to edit. I pressed A and programmed it to press=jump bank to 3, and saved it. But when I press A it does not jump the bank..
I’m sorry I’m not of much help. I’m sure there’s a master setting somewhere that needs to be adjusted. I would recommend joining one of the Morningstar forums on Facebook or Reddit. I’m sure someone there could help
@@AlexPriceMusician Hey Alex, you were absolutely right. James just responded to my email saying that currently the jump bank mode cannot be used while you are in the editing mode. Thank you for responding to my comment. I want to explore more of your channel and learn from you.

Does anyone know if there's a way to loop back the helix to reset the morningstar? For example i use a toggle to turn on pitch shift, but if I change patch or snapshot the pitch will be turned off, but the morningstar still shows the on state.
I believe that you should be able to set up the MC8 to respond with the function “reset toggle” (I think that’s what it’s called). On the Helix, go into command center and set up an automatic CC message to happen when you change to a preset. You’ll have to set it up for each one.
Hey Alex. I've been playing with reset toggle. It gets messy where fx are switched on in the preset, which would flag an off on the morningstar. I think the best integration is a helix floor.
@@gravyblue Yeah I've noticed that too. I've started an Excel sheet with all my CC messages and I will try to keep them consistent from each Helix preset. For example - no matter which preset I'm in, a tremolo effect is always CC message 10
While I appreciate you doing the video, I have found the MC8 to be totally confusing. No one on UA-cam provides a basic set up of MIDI pedals (even how to connect them to the MC8), and a slow explanation of how to use the MC8. Your video, like others on UA-cam, gives too much detail that is not helpful. Maybe you could do a more basic video. Thanks
Wish I came across this video much sooner. Same boat as you , very improvisational and tired of tripping over pedals to change my sound thanks

I thought the same thing but the "LONG NAME" displays in the center of the current preset.
Amazing info. How did you connect the morning star to the empress pedals? Empress midi box 2?
Great video! Do you have a video that shows how your Stomp is setup when used with the main board? Connections, blocks ETC.
Yes! But it's not out yet. That'll be next week :)

It's a Levy's strap - this one exactly: www.zzounds.com/a--3971116/item--LEVM4WP

How are you connecting to the echosystem? Their manual says there’s a separate piece of hardware (midi box 2) to be able to use midi?
The MC8 has a few TRS outputs you can configure to work with a bunch of different pedals. I’m using that for the echosystem and reverb

The MC8 has all the new features of the MC6 mkii, just with more switches and 1/4" ports. Depends on what you need I guess. Sorry this is a year late!
