My party had a kobold, but he was there by choice, pretty much given free run, and the party watched out for him. Once Tasha’s came out, I applied sidekick rules to him. He was always the npc mascot, never a pet. Come on, they’re sentient!

Exactly! My players have a Kobold scribe following them around to "account the tales of his people's gods" (The party have a Red and a Blue Dragonborn in the party, and they convinced a whole building of Kobolds they're secretly gods). He's never forced to be around them, and knows when to keep his distance. At the moment Sir Tenly Adraggon (Decided to make his name a pun. "Certainly a dragon") is traveling with the Blue Dragonborn on a skyship, and hopefully he'll have many more tales to write down

    • @GlamEye
      @GlamEye 2 роки тому +6

@@Karagianis The thing with Psudodragons is that they canonically love being treated like pets, they adore being given cutesy names, they love being petted, played with, carried and all around babied like how you would treat an actual pet. It's just that because of their pride they deeply hate being called or considered a pet since that basically puts them in the position of an inferior or property instead of as a friend or companion. So with Psudodragons is an understandable mistake to make, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck and acts like a duck, it's surprising when the duck poisons you for calling it a duck.

We should do a crossover episode.
I've gained sentience and don't trust easily because my last owner essentially pinned their entire happiness and identity on me and I was like, "bro I love you but I'm just a dog who loves to eat, sleep and drag my ass on the carpet, pinning your sanity and very self image on me is too much pressure."
I eventually graphically faked my death in an attempt to help him move on from our codependent slide into depression. I think of him often but fear a relationship that intense ever again.

I have a kobold character who'd actually prefer being treated like that- she's of the mind that there's "no such thing as bad attention." So she wouldn't mind the outfits or the bindings or being taken to all the risky places because she has people waiting on her hand and foot. She'd probably play up the whole "helpless" aspect just to get more attention.

I actually did something similar to the second story. A couple years ago, we had to put down our 17 year old cat, my best friend. Around the same time, I had just started designing a character for a D&D game with some friends. I took that opportunity to make a wizard with a cat familiar, and gave it the same name as my old friend. Just to be with her a little longer.

I've been naming palicoes in Monster Hunter after my long-lost tabby Gulliver. Design their fur patterns to look as much like him as I can. It's... a little hard to do without tearing up, but then I get to go on adventures with my cat, so. Ultimately a win. Did the same thing with the palamute in Rise, and now Flash lives again, in a way.

My party has a kobold we sort of adopted after a failed ambush against our party. To sum up the encounter we were ambushed by a group of about 12 kobolds and defeated about 8 of them including the leader in 1.5 rounds. Which proceeded to caused a panic amongst the remaining kobolds, and in the scramble to escape our party's vicinity one kobold downed it's injured ally so it could leave our line of site. Well our artificer took pity on the kobold by healing and feeding it. Then stating it was free to leave if it wanted to or come with us, it chose us because of promises of regular meals and being well cared for. Also the kobold is now our artificers lab assistant/apprentice and is named Larry. Only because when we asked it it's name it was too overly long and complex for us to memorize.
Side note: the kobold upon being told we were just going to call him Larry only shrugged its shoulders in response. So we assume he is ok with it.

The party that I DM needed to destroy a magic item, so I created a monster that could eat magic items. It combined all the qualities of a Black Pudding and a Rust Monster into one ooze monstrosity. It was created through a sadistic ritual by a cult of Ghaunadaur who also converted themselves into gelatinous cultists. This monstrosity is acidic to the touch and while it can eat wood or metal items, always prefers to dine on magical items explicitly, which it can smell the presence of. I can't think of many parties that would like to be around something like this for very long, as they tend to like owning magic items.
...So the party has had it for about 10 levels now, and the fact that it's about to hit its version of puberty is a plot important event the party is preparing for, knowing that they need to get it to the Elemental Plane of Ooze to feed for a while. They're currently on a quest to get the correct tuning fork for the Plane Shift spell, and are looking forward to see it post-transformation.

That first story reminds me a bit of the book "Orconomics," a satire about a heroic fantasy world with a surprisingly modern economy. At one point, the dwarven protagonist rescues a goblin and adopts him. The goblin speaks poor common, and he doesn't speak goblin, and... well, if you've read it, you'll understand exactly how a minor miscommunication regarding what to call him turned out.
If you haven't read it... read it! If you enjoy this channel you'll likely enjoy the story.

I do have a similar story as the first one, though I hope not as fucked up. DnD 3.5, the group was facing undead assaults on cities and even a famous and loved town got reduced to cinders by them, causing a crusade to be formed. Characters were expected to try and recruit extra help for such a task, as there would be no way we could take on an army that size by ourselves. Paladins recruited more paladins, clerics recruited more clerics... And my bard recruited a rat.
My bard is a level 16 bard/dragon disciple, and after seeing that the battle would take place in a cemetery and on the catacombs under it, I had the bright (or stupid) idea to just recruit rats to do the exploration for us. DMs were mildly okay with the idea as long as I try to convince said animals, which aren't the smartest. My bard does have Speak with animals as a spell and a shit-ton of animal handling and diplomacy, so I didn't think too much about it.
Comes the day of recruiting, I go into the sewers of a city with the warrior and the cleric, end up recruiting only one, a huge, fat rat that I nickname Nera. Turns out, Nera loves whale meat and that shit is sold in tons at the market, so through food, we became friends. She also got along with the parrot my bard had adopted years ago from a deceased pirate, named Meg Screams-a-lot.
The headquarters of the crusade was an orphanage that's very close to the cemetery, and most people did NOT enjoy seeing that rat. A few barbarians tried to smash it, the priests of Sune, goddess of beauty, though it was sacrilege to even have such an animal there, but my bard convinced them all that it was a good plan. And the rat? Nera explored the dungeons every day, not really facing any dangers. The undead ignored the rat, as some of the vampires commanded their own and it fit right in. And after every dungeon run, Nera would come out to the backside of the orphanage and whisper all of that info to my bard. The info wasn't extremely reliable given it's a rat and it doesn't quite understand what an undead was, but it helped us a ton in catching their patrols by surprise.
We won the crusade by the skin of our teeth, we barely made it, and at the end of it, as the prince was handling out medals of honor, a huge rat comes out of a hole in the wall, so fat that it makes the hole bigger on the process. Nera comes right to my bard and pukes right at his feet. Scared that it might have gotten bitten on the battle I take a look at it, and turns out Nera puked a magical ring that it stole for me from one of the crypts, giving me a +4 to AC, extra resistance to sickness, +7 to animal handling and while I wear it, a telepatic link with Nera that would allow me to understand how it feels, what's it thinking about and if it's hungry or scared.
After said crusade, Nera and my bard became not only friends but partners, and the dwarf paladin even forged a mithril helmet for it. Now she's named 'Nera the Crusader Rat', and has visited a few planes of existence alongside my bard and the parrot, sharing meals and slowly but surely recruiting other stray rats into joining his spy network of unreliable rat and parrot informers.

My players encountered a swolbold (essentially a big, buff, strength-based kobold with some special abilities) while clearing out a cave for a warlock NPC. The Bard decided to try and befriend him, and discovered that he responded best when offered food. So, they gave him a lot of food, traveled with him for a brief time, and after some bonding and more food (and good treatment), Buckwheat the Swolbold is now a trusted guard at their manor, and is a personal bodyguard to Azymondias, the baby crystal dragon the party is raising.

As a kid I had a cat named Snowball. Loved her dearly and she'd always wait on the corner of my block to walk me home.
One day she didn't show up. Three days go by and she never showed up as I called and called for her.
My mother eventually told me she'd taken Snowball to a farm, that we'd visit her which we of course never had time to do, and I held that against her for months.
Fast forward to the present. I'm 38, a Navy vet, and it suddenly dawns on me that I never once thought to ask my mother what REALLY happened because I'd long since learned what 'to the farm' typically means for pets.
She tells me that she really did take her to a farm and she really didn't have time because the lady that owned the place and my mother's schedule just never found a middle ground.
So that night I was eating dinner and out of no where 25+ years of missing this cat hit me like a freight train and I just cried thinking that I'd never gotten to see her again, but also realizing that she didn't die the horrible death I kind of expected when a parent says your pet 'went to a farm'.
So I can sympathize with the player that always had a dog as a pet.

Even just "so long, see you later, enjoy the farm"? She didn't, because she didn't really take her anywhere. She just couldn't admit to it.
Seriously, that would be way more screwed up, if she really did just decide one day to take your pet to live somewhere else, without even talking with you about it, first.

Also, he got recruited into the Harpers and was set to go on adventures with my rogue after the campaign wrapped up. In the first dungeon crawl, we did well and played smart for the first room, no damage. Then the second room there was some skeletons. Now boars have high AC for some reason, highest in the group even with an armored person with us, so I sent him in. Then crit. If it was just a normal crit, that would have been fine but the DM was using crit effect cards and what did he pull? Decapitation. Yep the first real damage in the game and it was an instant kill. Screw those cards.

Me and my party were ambushed by goblins. We killed them all and left one for interrogation. We took pity on him and convinced him to join us on our adventures. I said, “If you come with us, I’ll give you this shiny thing.” It was just a ball bearing. I then said, “Ok you’re Dimitri now.” He then said, “Ok Dimedi.” I responded “That’s right Dimitri.” I gave him a ball bearing every time he was good.

A party I was DMing once had captured the sole survivor of a group of Goblins they'd just slaughtered(the Goblins, except this one, were all evil). Before having captured this Goblin, who I later named Snotrag, the party had cut his arm off during the battle. The Paladin had intended to "crush his skull in" after the party interrogated this goblin for info on his vampire overlord. However, the innocent-minded Monk of the party decided he thought Snotrag was cute and was able to convince the party to spare him. A Ghost NPC who was possessing a Ghoul at the time then tried to re-attach Snotrag's arm. I had the player who controlled this ghost roll a Medicine check with disadvantage... he got double NAT 20s. As such, I had a light from Ilmater, the Deity of Mercy, decent down and reconnect Snotrag's arm. The party then let Snotrag go on his merry way.
Later, I had Snotrag come back as a Divine Soul Sorcerer whose blessed arm was his spellcasting focus. He was now part of a friendly rival Adventuring party and the players got his backstory. The reason he was named Snotrag was that, growing up, he always tended to the sick in his clan out of the goodness of his heart. Because he wiped so many sick noses, he got named Snotrag, since the other Goblins were born-psychopaths with no sense of empathy. Due to this, while Snotrag's initial run-in with the party hadn't been a pleasant one, he was ultimately happy because he could now live his life being able to heal people as he'd always dreamed.

Our rogue smuggled an unhatched basilisk egg and when she (or he? Can't remember if we ever really checked...) hatched my dwarf fighter really liked her because she also "works with stones"... She got a proper dwarven name: Amber.
Later we traded her to a hag coven after a poor insight check for whether the hags will treat her good and keep her save. We stole her back though once we realized that the nearby village was slowely turning into stone - villager by villager.

I'm playing thru my first campaign ATM and my group was attacked by two large treants and a small tiny treant who had an arrow sticking out of it and were being led by a rather tall and very strong goblin. We managed to put the two large treants to sleep and did enough damage to the tall goblin to chase him off. I had decided to knock out the tiny treant and tie him up using my rope. I named him Groot. I'm technically keeping him as leverage to protect ourselves from being attacked but I suspect the treants are being forced by the goblins to do their bidding. There is some shrine we came across that summoned a disembodied voice that offered us our desires in exchange for a sacrifice. The stupid dwarf sorcerer in our group traded half his life span for two load stones thinking the DM meant hit points but he ended up aging 200 years rapidly. So I know the spirit doesn't require a death sacrifice. I'm gonna ask him for the power to speak to treants and find out what Groot is thinking. I plan to befriend the treants to help against the goblins.

The bard was nice to him and taught him the word net in common. So Net as he then dubbed himself went through the dungeon with us even betraying the evil wizard at the end of it who was ordering his clan around. Now 2 sessions later he is speaking in simple sentences in common. He through the combined efforts of the party which is a fighter a rouge a druid and the bard have trained him to be a first level ranger. That is the story so far of Net the Kua Toa ranger that our party adopted.

My dream as a child was to read every book in the world. Now, realistically, I could never do this, even I knew that, but I loved reading and learning and was absolutely obsessed with the idea of books (think Myne from Ascendence of a Bookworm and you’re pretty close). A few of my earliest characters I ever made were big bookworms and motivated highly by knowledge, most were true neutral in alignment for this reason. I only realized after hearing the second story that my reason for making characters so motivated by books and knowledge goes back to this childhood dream of mine. I still can’t read every “book” in the world of the campaign, sure, but pursuing it without real life getting in the way? That probably is my real escapism here.

You right, DnD is a good way to play out things that may be a revelation to the player in time, for the sake of therapy unintentionally.
But don't go around making these characters that are based off you to intentionally trauma dump and relive those experiences with magic and friends, because it's like a railroad for the characters, the story and experience . It's not so fun for anyone when you fantasy idea is 1:1 your irl trauma.
On that note; while creating and writing down my new characters backstory, I reflecting on their motivations and circumstances.
And eventually understand the effect of a trauma I had and how it affected me, but it's double down more so because I am the way I am before that.
    I love this game.

I only ever noticed in hindsight, but every character I've made since my parents kicked me out of the house in 2015 has been my subconscious telling me something about my hangups, sexuality/gender, or personal aspirations. D&D is great way to explore who you are in an environment that is inclusive and understanding and that allows some emotional distance. This is my favorite game for a reason.

This made me realize something. Similar to this guy and his dog, I have a preference to having a wizard familiar or lately a Druid's Wild Companion come forth as a bird of some sort. Listening to this, it brought up a memory of my parakeet. A little yellow bird named Sonny (Yes, weird spelling, I know) that I loved to death. He was very chill, didn't mind people at all, and loved his time outside during the warmer months. That is until one night when we heard a tussle outside. Somehow, a snake got into his cage and attacked him. By the time we got out to see what was going on, all we found was a bunch of feathers leading down into a drain.
My first Wizard (whom I have yet to play really) is pictured with a similar bird. I hope to play them one day, but I always wondered why I thought of that in particular. Now I know.

Our group has its own little collection of pets, some of which are more...questionable...than others (and one I vehemently said NO to taking). Starting off, we have our Ranger's cougar companion, named Little Bear (just roll with it, don't ask questions). Then eventually we found a crazy old Druid who seemed to recognise my character and tried to kill us so we defended ourselves. Our Cavalier Fighter decided to then adopt the Animated Shrub the druid had and named it Berry (it has the ability to grow Goodberries on itself). Berry is thankfully living at our home base now. The third one we got was a yeti tyke, after we ended up unwillingly killing the thing's parents (we tried to leave in peace, but the father returned and attempted to kill us, we had to defend ourselves, and then the mother attacked after we killed her mate, so...yeah...). Our Bard/Fighter and myself were the ones who insisted we take it this time, as we felt giving it a new home was the only way we could really make amends after we told the mother we'd leave her family in peace. And now our Tortle Fighter/Ranger has had the bright idea to adopt a baby White Dragon which she's calling "Pet"

I had a Kobold character for the Pathfinder Kingmaker campaign (it is better the TTRPG than the videogame... because, for example, in the video game you cannot be a kobold nor can you set as background who your parents are or that these are already existing characters of the world), my Kobold was one of the sons of the chief of a nearby kobold tribe that had been having problems with a species of goblins as well as a group of human bandits. In my character's background I included that he had gone exploring but he encountered some bandits and they captured him. The difference with the story in this video, besides the dresses, was that my kobold learned from the time he spent with those humans to speak something other than Draconic... and when he escaped from those bandits he joined the adventuring group.

I loved the idea of that Wizard's character, I always have conflicts with how quickly Wizard players learn new spells when it's supposed to be very difficult and that they have to study to master/discover the spells (because otherwise what differentiates them from the Sorcerers?). But that idea of the stolen spell book makes more sense of the matter as this low-level Wizard is simply trying to understand the notes of a more advanced and older Wizard who already did all the work.
Another typical idea is that of the old Wizard who did a spell to reincarnate or rejuvenate but in the process he lost his memory and that is why he "returned" to level 1 and then little by little he recovers his memories and that explains how he advances so quickly, because in reality he is just recovering from amnesia, he already knows all, he already studied it. But the thing about the amnesiac Wizard has already been seen enough.

I want to play a goblin that was picked by a party (not in game) as "a pet". He tried to befriend human village, but humans sent adventurers as extermination, which led to death of his family. It was bound to ruin his psyche, and he became a celestial warlock in very elaborate try of suicide. Secret reading wizards books was his only comfort. He found a ceremony that allows to summon an angel of vengeance, which he summoned to be entirely destroyed by it, as punishment for "betrayal". To goblins surprise (to him all gods are evil, because they all either try to enslave or destroy his race, and thus their celestial and fiends that serve them are too), he wasn't killed. The angel first was angry at goblin, thinking it was a joke. Then got terrified of his fate. And then got enraged. To goblins surprise, angel first obliterated the wizard, then tried to cure goblins madness, which didn't work, because the goblin didn't trust it. The goblin asked again for penance. The angel, desperate to help and not having better ideas, offered a deal: It will grant the goblin celestial magic, and the goblin shall work to make the world a better place, until he forgives himself. If he forgives himself, the goblin may keep their powers to still do good, or just resign to live normal life.
