As a player, I once had a half-elf monk who died in the second session of a campaign; he valiantly saved the party from a TPK while at 1 hit point, fell off a bridge, and failed three death saves. As his replacement, I rolled up a human wizard who was 15 years old and awkward as hell. He ended up being the most sensible and reliable member of the party by far, and he was a blast to play.
As a DM, I one-shot a PC by having a warforged soldier Sparta them off an airship. I did give them a couple of saving throws to avoid death, but sometimes the dice just fall where they may.

My brother is a first time DM running a campaign. Recently he told me about one of his sessions where he introduced a bunch of randomized Magic Scrabble pieces where if you arrange them into a word they lock in place and do whatever the word says as a limited wish but they still have to roll a D20 for how the wish turns out.
One of the players while in a pinch decides to bring the scrabble pieces out and had the letters to write the word "G-O-D" but they rolled a Nat 1...My brother was in stunned silence desperately trying to think of a way to have there be consequences without killing his player till another player chimed in "She's dead...isn't she..." so he is forced to describe how a beam of light descends from the sky blasting through the roof of the dungeon and incinerates her instantly leaving only dust. Fortunately the Party decided to gather the ashes and rush back to the city and meet with an NPC that could fix it but I won't go into that in case any of his players see this comment, I wouldn't want to spoil my brother's campaign.

For some reason, the first thing that came to my mind when I read "beam of light comes down and incinerates the character " was the death animation in the Helltaker game.

Hungry pit doesn't work that way, so i totally get why the cavalier is pissed. It isnt a real pit but an extra dimensional space (hence why it is in the conjuration school) and when it ends anything in the pit is returned to the surface as the pit vanishes. You could fill the pit with dirt sure, but the spell lasts 1 round + 1 round/level. Not enough time for someone to suffocate.

I've had a character I've been holding onto for almost 6 months, I just joined a new campaign and we're 2 sessions in.
I've put so much work into this character and while it may seem dramatic it feels like an expression of myself. It would suck if I died before we can make it to mid-high levels.

I only had one permanent character death, but it was probably the only one worth noting because of how bad it was.
Not even bad because of how sad it was, jsut how *bad* it was.
i don't claim to remember all the details, but this is more or less what i remember.
It was a horribly balanced encounter; weighing far too heavily on our spellcasters. Needless to say, I feel like I can say this; If your *tank* is the only PC to die in a fight, you either did something very right, or very, very wrong.
I was playing a 5 (maybe 6th) level Bear Totem Barbarian at the time. Homebrew Large-sized Sharkfolk; They pretty much were meant to be the team mom in a way, making sure everyone else was tended to. The rest of the party I can't remember too well since we had players and characters either dropping out or swapping fairly quickly. Consistently i can say we had at least a Cleric, a Sorcerer, and a Rogue otherwise.
The encounter was against - IIRC - 3 Cultists, 2 Gnoll Necromancers, a Gnoll Warboss, and some other strange monster that had 3 attacks. I remember the last one for reasons explained at the end.
Initiative kicks off and because we were cluttered, a Cultist immediately casts Cloudkill on us. We didn't read the damage rules at the time, so it ended up everyone taking 2 doses of damage; One when the spell was cast, and one when our turns started - which was among other things that did my character in, having lost 20HP before she could Rage.
Gnoll Necromancers would summon 3 Gnoll's each, which had the HP of wet tissue paper...But the Warboss however was the big issue; capable of causing any Gnoll-type enemy to move their movement speed as a reaction. Which includes the spawned minions of the Necromancers.
My turn rolls up and I take my damage, run through the cloud and rage, and start swinging, which everyone else fans out to either side of the cloud, giving my character covering fire.
Cultist hits me with Hideous Laughter. I fail the save, and I am floundering on the floor like a fish out of water
I roll to break out of the Laughter, I fail (with Advantage)
Some creature on the battlefield runs up to me and uses a special effect on me, apparently a non-magic Sleep effect that I needed to make either a Con or Wis save for. They put me right to sleep, knocking me out of Rage.
I wake up when a Critical Hit hits me. Still failing, still laughing, no longer enraged.
i can't even Rage because I'm locked into the laugh.
My turn rolls in again. Cant roll higher than a 10 total.
You remember that 3-attack guy i mentioned? i remembered he had 3 attacks because his first took me to 0, and his next two chunked off 4 Death Saves, giving me a coup-de-gracie that decapitated my character. By the DMs ruling, they were beyond Revivify.
It was at this point a DMPC popped up and helped mop up the rest of the enemies, with the 3 Cultists fleeting.
An option was suggested in-game to resurrect her, but NPCs *also* heavily suggested not following up with it because she would become "an abominable horror." In the end, the Cleric suggested giving my character a proper burial before moving on.
We were shown next game in a cutscene that "they felt proud of themselves for killing one of them" but it didnt leave a very good taste in anyone's mouth.
because of the Pandemic, I ended up dropping out of this group, though i hope the group is doing well.
I wouldn't mind trying to play this character again, but I'd need to figure out how they'd work without Homebrew.

I killed on of my players characters with another PC. Bothe he, a ranger, and their barbarian got captured during a fight and were dragged in front of an aboleth. The ranger succeeded in his saving throw to keep from being dominated, the barbarian did not. This led to a whole side mission because another PC was determined to sacrifice himself to bring the ranger back, which led to an audience with the Raven Queen. Pretty epic all and all.

I was playing a campaign where we were hired to steal some barrels from goblins. We were on a couple of boats being chased and dropped one barrel into the water which I managed to lasso. I decided to sacrifice this barrel and throw a homemade Molotov cocktail at the goblins boat so we could escape. We didn't know what was in the barrel but we found out fast. I got an 18 on my throw and hit the barrel which then exploded because it was full of gunpowder. Normally this wouldn't be a problem but our boats were almost touching with about 8 ft of water separating them. I easily survived with my 18 armor rating and 23 health. I killed everyone else with this explosion exept for 1 person who had 1HP left and started drowning. If it wasn't for our DMs kindness by having a druid with extraordinary healing powers come by then it would have been a TPK.

I played a crocodile man in a campaign that lasted for 2 years. He was not an intelligent character, but he was kind and really strong. My DM decided to kill him off because I burned through 2/3s of the BBEGs health in one turn. Note, this was due to the same dms home brew. I was pretty upset because I had been playing him for 2 years at that point.

My friends and I wanna play dnd since one of them mentioned wanting to try DMing & they have a LOTR world handbook. We're still in character creation, mostly because lack of time. Since that I'm the only one with any kind of prior dnd experience, DM & I agreed that I'll be in charge of helping them keep the party alive both in & out of character. Due to the classes others picked, I decided to go for a tank wanderer with 8 charisma points (I could easily make it 10 & avoid having a negative modifier but where's the fun in that?).
The thing is, I only tired playing a character with low charisma once and by the end of the 1st session with her, party and I agreed I suck at being mean & settled on just being petty and retired her soon after. But I want to make my friend's 1st experience as a DM as good as I can & we have enough charismatic characters as it is, meaning I had to google for ideas and tips.
Guess who is looking forward to playing low confidence, anxious, stuttering mess who can't decide if they should head left or right, but will tank hits for party members at the drop of a hat :3 Low charisma doesn't mean you should be mean and evil to everyone, you just can't people very well.

With a decent enough GM, Death is a neutral force, not evil... SO in so much as the marks chosen are imbalancing or otherwise endangering the world/existence in their presence, their deaths are not necessarily evil acts...
Remember, everything and everyone dies sooner or later... It's fulfilling that portion of the circle of life... and even existence as a whole.
It's dubious for a GM to purposefully pit two PC's against each other, especially with so many GM's getting pissy about Players becoming "murder-hobo's"... SO I'm not just telling you this to help settle you. I'm suggesting it as a valid argument you can support when confronting the GM for being overtly confrontational in-game.
Obviously, if your group is game for "that sort of business" (the whole PvP and Murderhobo antics) then you can just embrace what's coming... BUT as a GM, myself, whenever I've set up Players to a stereotypical "face-off" it's usually to undermine what they expect and sweep their figurative feet out from under them with something "out of left field" instead... ;o)

Story #1: It isn't the death that is the most frustrating, but the manner of death and player agency (or lack thereof). One-hit kill death rolls, no matter how "justifiable," are super frustrating because that character they put so much time and attention into can be wiped out just with an unlucky die roll that the player can't do anything about. Not to mention that the DC was extremely high.
As a DM, you have to ask yourself, "What does this character death accomplish?" The cavalier was all by themself as a sort of scout, but not being particularly stupid, so punishing stupid player actions isn't a reason for doing to the character what you did. Not only did you take away the players' allies (giants) that they had intelligently recruited by infecting them with a mind-controlling fungus (recruiting the giants was a smart decision and should have been rewarded), but then, rather than capturing the cavalier as a hostage with minions (and creating a cool rescue mission), you CHOSE to use a spell with a stupidly high reflex save for a class that reflex saves are very poor, and then use epic level magic to obfuscate the location of the player character, effectively just becoming god and declaring their character dead. There are literally DOZENS of choices you could have gone with. The player is right to be furious. Your choices are sadistic, plain and simple. If the party was smart, they'd punish you by walking away from the BBEG and the army. There is no point in taking on a fight that they can't win. I would be genuinely surprised if your actions didn't effectively demoralize the party.
If you want to fix the situation, you need to bring the player character back. Personally, I'd do a one-on-one session with the player where their god talks to the character and gives them important information. This serves as a reason as to why they had to die. Maybe the city they're trying to protect is fated to fall. Maybe it has been undermined and has been infiltrated, so instead of defending the city, they need to evacuate. Maybe the god gives the player the location to a cure to the mind-controlling fungus that they can give to the giants mid-siege to turn the tide of battle. Maybe the god has the location of a dragon orb near by that can be used to assault the army. Remember, the party is SUPPOSED to win. This isn't supposed to be DM vs Party.

    • @SchwhatNow
      @SchwhatNow 3 роки тому

Rather than saying something dumb to the lines that your opinion is wrong, because it's certainly valid, I want to express an alternative take that some people might not realize.
I'm of a mind, as a player and a DM, that I want the actions of the world to feel justified and believable. Sure that the BBEG could have captured the Cavalier instead but why? Out of game to save the character from death but in game it just wouldn't make sense. The BBEG is out to achieve their goals and is going to use the most efficient means possible to do just that. Splitting the party is always a risky move and in this case it just didn't pay off. Sucks for the Cavalier but that's life.
I don't want a game in which I'm guaranteed to win and I certainly don't want to run a game in which the party knows that they'll never risk losing or loss. I understand that some people don't agree with this and want to enjoy a more casual experience so this story is likely just an instance of player vs DM expectations and not having them line up beforehand. It's important that everyone signs up for the same kind of game after all.

    • @Scrydragon
      @Scrydragon 3 роки тому +2

@@SchwhatNow I did mention an alternative action for the players if the DM insists on running the game that way. That alternative is to not fight the BBEG or the army at all. I have played in groups where this kind of thing happened. DMs HATE it. If you're playing a more deadly game, it's perfectly logical to do things differently. If the BBEG literally hand-waved one of your fellow PCs into the ground, it's a perfectly logical response to go, "Oh, shit, we may not be up to this task." And then bail. Evacuate the city, send out warnings to fellow countries, but don't engage the army or the BBEG. The formians are going to have to spend some time exploring and checking out the city. The party can be either helping with the evacuation or spreading the word. A few more cities might fall, but then there should be the armies of several countries there to counter this invasion. Maybe some legendary wizards or other heroes at the forefront. But I guarantee you, that DM isn't ready for his party up and bail. Even the best ones usually aren't.
I've played in a game where everything is extra deadly, and resurrections are hard to come by. What happens is that players don't become attached to characters. And running away becomes a legitimate strategy. The problem here is that it sounds like the DM pulled this sudden move on this player out of his ass. With eight players, they split into two standard groups. If you're running a deadlier game, it shouldn't be a surprise to your players. Encounters prior to the BBEG should have been dangerous as hell such that when the party gets to the boss battle, they'll be wetting their pants.

This is Palladium Fantasy, but I'll translate over. I'm a 4th level Animator (think Artillerist Artificer, but Cannon uses one of my spells known, instead of it's own fire/force/shield, limited uses, but can make more than one at a time) Draw a Death card from The Deck. Defeat it in a fight, not of combat, but wits. IIR it was something about how Death can't create life. I'm now a guy, growing a demon inside me (Spell of Legend) that I need to deal with, and no, can't just cut it out (special circumstances, related to how the battle "isn't over yet"). Get in a fight with an unknown form of undead. Get infected before the thing gets put down. So now I'm really on the clock because I'm getting weaker because of the curse, if I die I become one of those undead, and if I give birth to the demon, I loose the wager with Death, loose my soul, and die anyway. There's a flower in a garden in Hades that will fix the undead curse, but we need to get there to get it. Just got to Hades with the group of 7 PCs, including me, all level 4 or so. Aaaand then the game disintegrated due to Real Life.
Not exactly an in-game death, but this is the closest I've ever gotten to one. Most games only last a few sessions before disintegrating for one reason or another, never long enough to actually get attached to a character enough to care.

When they get there I toss a choice into the game. Rez cost more than they have. But, reincarnation is way cheaper. I sat and listen to them arguing before they pay for the cheapest spell. And they end up with a young centuar fighter in the party

Had a survivor of a human fighter by end of campaign had watched sixteen friends die and had put down three others this was just pcs not npc allies to explain complaining that dnd was not violent enough so dm adds homebrew limb severing yeah that human locked the gate to his keep and never let anyone else near her she soon after died forgetting that the wizard dumped any failed alchemical or poisonous expiriments in the well witch was the only water source in the keep

I dont blame the cav for being upset at all. He pretty much got save or die. Which sucks and isn't fun. Its one of the biggest issues in pathfinder generally and most dms I know avoid using anything like that. Also it seems like a stupid move on the bbegs part anyways. Without the cav he can't scry easily on the party.

I never recommend a player being evil in a good campaign or being baddie. Unless they relinquish the character to the dm and takes on a new npc the party has met.
At best the party defeats you and you accept your character going down. Worst case you win and potentially have hard feelings making it hard to keep playing with that party. No matter what the party will take quite a while before they can trust eachother again. If it happens more than once I can just guarantee they wont trust that person anymore.
It's an interesting idea but hard to implement

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464

With groups I've been in, to work out a Player being a "baddie", it's usually a "job" as agreed between that Player and the GM... The end of the Character (usually an inevitability) being accepted, the GM gifts that Player for the next Game or Character rolled up... something definitely useful, but not necessarily too OP...
This settles the whole PvP and trust issue. It was a JOB... Whether the Player necessarily requested it or just accepted the deal, it's a deal... AND without such a deal, there is no such job... It keeps Players from becoming "wang-rods" about it...
AND any Player is allowed to approach the GM for a chance to be "the betrayer"... It's usually done "to the side" during a Session-Zero... OR there's an in-game twist when the "job" can be offered (again "in a side-bar")... Leaving the Party free enough to figure out whether or not they're going to trust that PC...
Players who can't handle the occasional twist of one of our own "turning" as it were, need to recheck their ego's and understand there's a difference between the Player (this HUMAN / IRL friend of yours) and the Character (a FICTIONAL Character) in the Game...
Don't make a big habit of constantly screwing over the Party for story-telling purposes, and they'll be able to fully engage and GET the full impact of a "gut punch" like one of their own betraying everything/one...
I've been down that road more than a few times. AND not every "evil alignment" is necessarily a murderous lunatic or out to screw the Party. They're in whatever Campaign entirely for their own greedy ends... whatever those may be.
Honestly, 5e's publications did even a worse disservice to Players and GM's alike than Gygax's original (way TOO vague) series of alignments and definitions... Go back to 2e and read that set, please. It's SOOO much better and allows for so much more Player Agency within the Character. ;o)

You can be evil without betraying the party
Like being a wannabe gang leader who, besides her friends and family, couldn't care less about other people and won't help them for free
Technically speaking a rogue stealing from random people in the streets is "evil" too, while looting everything that's not nailed down after the party attacked some hideout is not exactly a "good" thing either
Imo people tend to take being "evil" too serious
Unless you have a lawful good paladin watching your every step and actively going out of his way to prevent or report any and each crime you commit then being just a tiny bit evil won't get you into conflict with the party
My wererat rogue only got into one "conflict" with the party so far (in 12 sessions of a few hours each), which was a discussion, if it really was the right decision to charge Leeroy Jenkins style into a burning village to stop some chaos warriors or if they should have done at least some basic scouting first
...geesh, not only was that fight incredibly dangerous, but because the local "anti-demon" army appeared my char didn't even get to loot the corpses because there's no way that she *in wererat form* is gonna risk provoking a bunch of monster slayers, meaning the entire fight was pointless in her eyes
Her plan is to eventually start a pack of wererats and maybe even form an alliance of several packs that help each other out

I would say that an evil pc should follow some rules.
      - try to hide it (character actions)
      - have tells (player actions)
      - don't harm the party (until the reveal, a good party is a great cover)
      - agree to it with the gm (job) unless the dm/party is being a prick but that is an out of game conversation
      - act in character, the rogue may try to 1v1 each member seperately, the wizard may monologue then nuke the party as a whole, ect
      - Never instakill them, its easy to just say you kill everyone in their sleep, which while most efficient is also the least fun for the players (yourself included)
But most importantly if you are going to do an evil betrayer character do it with mature enough players that they won't get super upset about it and make an ugly scene. (A judgement call, while asking is the most effective way to tell it also ruins any surprise of unassuming players)

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 3 роки тому

      @@jasonreed7522 Yup... It's worth pointing out that "building and milking relationships" is a fine way to add to one's own protective cover... {creates the perfect excuse to stick with the Party}
AND of course, you should resist even offering a PC-betrayer until you've seen a couple PC-deaths in-game... Gauge the response of the Players, even if there's a plausible revive situation, the death is still a thing... and elicits a response.
If I notice I have more than one overtly immature Player at the Table, I'm reluctant to dubiously dive into betraying the Party... with the rarer exception that I fully intend (on the spot, more or less) to scrap my Character...
That is the trick, though... If you ask about how the Group feels about betrayals, it kills about half the emotional rollercoaster you're trying to help put them on... SO I'll do just about anything to avoid ruining the surprise... ;o)

    On PC deaths...
I prefer to outright AVOID hinging a PC's survival on a single die-roll. If a PC is going to die, it should generally come about as a result of a series of poor decisions (ever raising risks) and low rolls of dice. Obviously, we don't always get the options we prefer, but for the most part, a relatively creative approach to GM'ing can make the space for Players to realize their Characters' overt risks and back off the "daredevil attitude" that's getting them deeper into trouble.
You get dinged up in this business...
Let's be honest. NOBODY in his right mind would want to be a PC... let alone a "Hero" or "Epic Hero". They play at big stakes and take big chances for big injuries or death, all in order to earn their way up in levels or other advancements of power for the respectable stories they create... BUT if there's going to be an explosion of joy for the victories, there has to be a serious risk of utter defeat, and even death.
    Let it BE Epic...
Yeah, burying a PC alive is a pretty brutal way to go, but the deaths I've had to suffer over the years that I most resented were the result of STUPID little details and otherwise "remarkably petty dumb shit". GM's that rely TOO MUCH on the dice to make their storytelling decisions throw everyone's agency away... AND nobody likes to lose a PC to slipping on soap in the bathtub, falling down stairs, a drunken stumble into traffic, or alcohol poisoning... to name a few.
I've gotten away with outright MURDERING a PC, simply because the storytelling behind it and the RP that went with the scene was well done... No dice rolled... no attacks or dodges or saves... nope... just the Player called his action, and I allowed the "instant death"... It fit the requisite storyline at that point, and while both Players understood their roles to play, there wasn't a dry eye at the Table...
    Finally, LET THE PLAYERS MOURN...
Some of our PC's have been around for more than a year, a weekly or bi-weekly visit with a friend who is so close, you know them even better than you could know yourself... It's the friend you DESIGNED on your own as well as formed such a close relationship with. It doesn't matter that all of this is in some fictional sense. Your mind has still formed that bond, not so different from any close relationship, friend or family. When or if they're killed or retired, it's normal and natural to take a little time and mourn that loss... AND as a GM, I not only condone it, I highly recommend it.
That doesn't necessarily mean you can't get the Player to pull out the next "spare PC" and get right back into the game, but you should take a few minutes and "deal with it" as a death... a loss. Resentment isn't just grown out of Players losing Characters, but the disregard for these works they've created and cultivated over time when they're just "pffft... and gone". ;o)

Writing other name instead of himself, so that someone else dies is actually pretty good idea, in case he still would've died because of overload of information.
But he did write so that his mind would withstand, meanwhile it didn't actually work. I don't play D&D, but I think if you give context to your wish, ignoring some part of the wish because it's too powerful is not fair. I think I read there are other rules, like having a chance to explode and die from the wish as more powerful it gets or that you can't use wish anymore after the use.

It is odd that so many players get hung-up on character death when they choose to play a game that includes character death as a possibility. I can understand not being happy about losing one's character, especially after spending so much time on them, but if one can't accept this possibility, perhaps D&D is not the game for them...
