This sounds like it will be of similar caliber to astoshans story...

“How in the Nine Hells did you know that?”
“Necromancy, my dear Watson.”
I designed an offbeat necromancer backstory. An older necromancer was looking for freshly interred bodies in a newspaper advertisement and accidentally put in "Looking for Fresh Interns." A wizard trainee from the local college answered the advertisement and found that he liked necromancy as well as the pay and work experience he received more than he liked accounting.
Man, that elf is so young, but he already thinks like a proper litch! This is a promising villain whose plans are built with cunning and wisdom. I love smart characters. I hope he achieves litchdom in the end.

More like "how to make a backstory for an evil necromancer", am I right?
It would be inappropriate for a backstory as a low level necromancer would not have the knowledge to be a court mage advising on magical affairs. It would also grant resources and wealth beyond acceptable limits to the PC.
It sound more like synopsis of a story that has concluded with him winning everything through time.

The part two is just sad... don't know if you want it TwT
That is, by far, one of the best stories I have heard and what an evil character should be rather than the cartoonish versions most players portray when they make evil characters.
Although I wonder when did he adventure? It sounds more like a story than one about a PC and hopefully this is not just a PCs backstory as that would not be appropriate.
honestly all the way up to the part where he starts to get involved with the princess is basically the backstory, the rest is what he does after his adventuring. I had to fill it in to drive his story forward.
so it's a variant of the backstory that Disney/Marvel gave Loki?

An idea i would love to see is a necromancer tree ent, just due to the difference in plant/animal lives, experiences, and values.

Not gonna lie, I kinda thought Haydrian would be the necromancer. I mean, his men thought fighting the drow would be harder, so the deceit that the supposedly just king was using necromancy to win his wars seemed inevitable

I just found out you are doing ads now with your voice and I love it.
I need a continuation!
That was an awesome Necromancer story.
All I got for a backstory for a necromancer at the moment is the tale of Cyril Ashborne, a half-elf raised by elves. Having aged and matured much faster than those of his kin, he realized early on that he would likely die before his father, and not wanting that to happen decided to take up necromancy as a way to achieve a method of at least extending his life... but as the saying goes: "Give a beggar a thousand in gold and he'll buy bread until he's full, and then realize that bread isn't all that's for sale."
Simple, but I think it's effective. He's a character I have sitting on the backburner, not having a game suited for him (I don't think a one shot would work for him)
That.... was fantastically well-written.
Thank you, granted it's full of mistakes, repeated words and the like. Drives me up the walls seeing my own mistakes.
Seeing a lot of comments remarking on how “Evil is made, not born” is a naive statement especially for D&D, and I just want to point out 1) depends on the DM and campaign, and 2) you guys should go listen to the story of Onyxia, also on this channel. 🖤✨
That's exactly what I had in mind when I wrote it lol.
You can take traditionally evil races and raise them good. It's not going to ruin the world lol
But again, Narlos was not evil because he was a drow, he was evil because of how he was raised as an object, how he was robbed of his value by self righteous humans who looked at him and saw their own actions and cause instead of a person.
Jeez, now that is story telling!
The Necromancer
Blue Oyster Cult
Finally an evil Necromancer story. Noice!
Evil doers are like mushrooms. They feed off of others and burst out of the ground in hopes to spread their influence. But they go mostly ignored, and are gone after a day, maybe two if they're lucky. But even the smallest act of good is like a flower. It sprouts and let's its color into the world drawing in others with kindness and provision until they are happy to spread its influence around, and there are fields covered with them.
Keep it rolling!
So, baby dark elf gets kidnapped and raised by a human king, then eventually overthrows said king and royal family through cunny and deception, and is now the new crowned kind... by his 40th year.
Um, hold on a second... **looks through phb about elf age** Ok, elves live till around 300-500 years, yet don't reach adulthood till... 100.
**slams phb shut and grumbles** See, this is why I don't like writing backstories for elves. I mean, what is the elf doing in there first 100 years if not something this epic!?
Either way, great story and long live King Narlos! The (technically in elven years) youngest king there ever was. May he rule for hundreds of years.
Can we start calling crusading "Nothing?"
I want more of Narlos' story! I could see it going bad almost legendarily. That ending doesn't bode well!
Well, when I find a good campaign to play him in I will write more about him
In my Descent into Avernus campaign, one of my party members is trying to build a skeleton necromancer.
wow!!!! a really good villian!!! and smart!!!!
I hope there's a part 2.
there is, it's just not likely to be shown as instead of the All things dnd website, they only draw from reddit now.
I agree that this story is brilliant. However, I disagree with the notion that evil is "made". Sometimes, it is simply born. I had a villain in my last campaign who was meant to only reveal to the PCs the existence of the MacGuffin that the BBEG was using for his evil plan. However, this villain was not associated with the BBEG in any capacity. If anything, he opposed him.
This new villain quickly usurped the BBEG as the party's archfoe. He even wound up being the final boss of the campaign, even though he was supposed to have died a long time ago. The reason he survived is that he was the first villain to actually cause a PC's death. And that didn't happen until they hit lvl.14. So the party was wary of approaching him whenever he reared his head because he was so much more dangerous than the BBEG. And the BBEG had the backing of the Archdevil Mephistopheles.
Though his lethality was never in question, what really cemented him as the party's archnemesis was the sheer atrocities he penned in his attempts to "educate" the PCs into thwarting the BBEG. He even deliberately left behind his personal journal as "reading material" for the PCs so they knew what to do. And reading it revealed no freudian excuse. No history of abuse or injustice. He just liked to kill things, even at a young age when he would dissect animals he would find in his hometown.
Tragic and/or nuanced villains are good... But sometimes what a story needs is a real sociopath, someone who in 9 out of 10 lifetimes was always going to end up hurting people, just with a question of "how many" and "how badly".
The more evil the villain, the better the hero. All this tragic backstory or sympathetic motivation take the fangs off. If you want a character who's made poor life choices or is a victim of circumstance that can be helped/redeemed, that's fine. But trying to make them unreasonably evil just makes them look stupid.
Is there a part two yet?
I want to play one day as a wooden/papercraft puppet with wooden floating hands who is also a powerfull necromancer.... if he was in his home dimension made of paper and wood now hes pretty weak since his spells are cardboard cutouts on string but atleast he can turn the world around him into his home dimension to actually be able to use his spells and his skeleton helpers are paper puppets
Surprisingly this isn't anything to do with Necromancy except the ending. Perhaps a better Tittle would be "How to PROPERLY Be An Evil Character"
It ain't end of the story
I am unsure if this is called evil outright. Vindictive and vengeful maybe. I suppose the evil act would be reanimating the adoptive family bones. Would need to see more of this.
Did you miss the part where he plotted to marry the princess in a way the king could not deny and then got the king killed? Evil is not supposed to be like in a comic book, but less obvious and more insidious.
@@craigtucker1290 I certainly did not miss those bits. I just placed it with the vengeful part. Though with the princess I am curious if he manipulated her or if he genuinely loves her. I think the princess might love guy genuinely but I am uncertain since in those fantasy games, there are mind enchantments here and there to sway the thoughts just a little at a time.
@@craigtucker1290 For added thought. The King got his just desserts for parading around a war trophy in front of his peers for who knows how long in the decades. The trophy just played the same mind game back at the king and subtly got his revenge by poisoning the wine. I'd say it was well done, but now what is where I am curious and if this character should really be considered evil.
@@MarkATorres1989 I see him as evil in that he did what he could no matter who got hurt by his actions to achieve his goal which fits the definition of evil in D&D. Evil is supposed to be subtle rather than how most play it over the top as murderhobos or like a comic book villain with neither being believable or practical.
It is hard to say how the king saw him through the years, but it sounds less like the king being the "bad" guy so much as the necromancer acting out of vindictiveness like Loki did when he realized his true nature in the marvel movies. The only difference is that the necromancer knew what he was all along and acted to get his revenge through his greatest asset, time.
Historically, this practice of tribute was commonly practiced, though slightly differently in that the other side was aware of it and it was generally used to secure peace or cooperation. They were generally well treated for their use in later dealings. The necromancer sounds no different and the concept isn't necessarily evil depending on how they are treated and the king did not treat him badly.
@@craigtucker1290 So the path of hell is paved with good intentions. Reminds me of some Shakespeare plays like MacBeth and Hamlet. Or Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.
Though I am curious where you have this idea or saw this connection with comic book villains and evil from my comments?
Have you seen the youtube series "aventures" from french UA-camr "Bazar du grenier" ? It's a 4 season homebrew tabletop by MJ Mahyar and was a great Introduction to tabletop rpgs for thousands of french people 2-3 years ago
I saw the picture that looks like a necromancer dark elf and one of my character just mad one so I want to see this.
The story was simple, but well done...except for the "war" against the Drow, imo. Granted, this is the teller's story, so they can make the world as they want. However, the bit where Hadrian ruthlessly destroyed Drow seemed EXTREMELY far-fetched to me.
First, the Underdark is not a place suited to traditional large scale warfare. Add to the fact that any large number of soldiers moving into the Underdark would have to navigate unfamiliar territory, while dealing with the myriad dangerous denizens that inhabit the deep, depending on far down you go.
Second, you're normally not going to find hordes of Drow, on the upper levels of the Underdark. At most, you'll find small raiding camps/parties. And, Drow don't take children with them on raiding missions. Not only is it unwarranted danger for the child, but it's also an unnecessary burden.
Third, this is the Drow's home turf. Has been for centuries. Even allowing for a large scale army to properly conduct operations in the confines of the Underdark, the Drow preference isn't open field warfare. They prefer traps, ambush, confusion, and subterfuge tactics. At the first hint of large numbers of enemy soldiers coming, Drow will retreat to more favorable territory, and employ harassing maneuvers as they go. And, that's only if they decided to fight at all. Simply fleeing altogether, until the kingdom grew complacent again, seems more inline with Drow thinking, imo.
I probably overthought this a bit. And, I understand that the story teller perhaps altered the Drow to his own liking, as opposed to how they've been established by WotC. But, as a fellow newbie wanna-be writer, I tend to analyze this stuff, lol. It was enjoyable, though, and hope to hear more!
it wasn't supposed to be a giant underdark city. It was an over ambitious small drow town trying to make a name for itself which is why so much attention was slapped onto the fact that it was way too easy to take on.
The Drow wanted to hide behind the fear and hesitation of the humans knowing the underdark isn't an easily tamed location in order to make up for their personal low numbers and overall weakness. They didn't expect a religiously motivated crusade to come kicking in their door.
But good analysis.
@@levikarkiainen331 Ah-ha. Duly noted, and much thanks for the additional clarification.
@@dominicjherr yeah, sorry I have to come back a year later to explain it I usually try and answer these things right away whenever it's one of my stories. @@levikarkiainen331 lol yeah, I hear you. That's why I made sure to preface my reply, with how I tend to overanalyze things. Didn't want to unintentionally offend anyone. Hope to hear more, at some point :)
@@dominicjherr Over analysis is a good sign. It's the kind of mindset you have to have in order to make good interesting stories.

The moment alignment should be made is when sentience is achieved otherwise everything is true neutral.
Race-inherent alignment sucks anyway.
@@FunnyFany it's not because of race that alignment is hereditary, it's because of the society that the characters grew up in and the life they had to lead to stay alive. Alignment is not racial, it's cultural.
@@ic3hell520
This is not necessarily true.
Devils, Demons and Celestials are a good case for the culture not informing the alignment anywhere near as much as race

That's what I call playing the long game.
How does someone play something like this, I don't see this as a playable campaign. Is this the basis for a campaign. Is this a campaign for a single player. It's interesting but I'm confused.

I agree as this sound more like a synopsis of story or an entire campaign, though nothing is stated really of adventuring parts. It shouldn't be a backstory as it is inappropriate for one for many reasons.
That being said, it is a really good story with the subtlety of evil.
it's the backstory for a character.
The adventuring takes place right before the marriage. The rest is the goals and completing the missions after or during the campaign
Did you do the voiceover for that new Hair Loss product on UA-cam?????
Nice
That's hardly evil, more neutral than anything.
Kinda similar to Loki's story, how Odin took him from the Frost Giants.
I can't help but wonder, did the drow wizard never attempt to use alter self or better yet shapechange (albeit that may have been beyond his capabilities without consulting planar beings for assistance getting a scroll or something) to change his species temporarily while she was ovulating (presuming their world uses IRL fertility)? Cause that could've theoretically allowed him to impregnate her, depending on DM ruling...
Did you consider the difference in aging rates between humans and elves as a factor? There is no way he was mature enough to procreate yet.
@@pambronson4467 Copy-paste from SRD: Although elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as Humans, the elven understanding of Adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An elf typically claims Adulthood and an adult name around the age of 100 and can live to be 750 years old.
Some might use different rules, to be sure, but the "default" is not a prolonged physical infancy or somesuch, only that they don't consider themselves to be emotionally and intellectually mature till they've reached a century (which I kinda wish we could do as humans tbh lol).

Why are evil wizards always Necromancers?
Because it's the easy path. Nobody ever thinks about the villainous applications of polymorph spells, or conjuration. There's also the obvious things like torture via evocation.
@@danieltilson4053 Enchantment wizards would be so easy to make evil. Hypnosis and mind control is one of the easiest ways to get into a position of power

Yep somehow 38 and balding sounds like he's just out of his late teens.
Time to be THAT GUY...
That's not how the rules of Monarchy work. Marrying a queen doesn't make you a king. Upon her death the kingdom would have to locate the next blood heir to the throne. Monarchy all about bloodline and heritage, not marrying into it.
From what it sounds like his wife is the current head of state. Thay'd make him just a prince consort who is called "King". A King Consort if you may, and that's not necessarily so unrealistic, those exist too, even if much more rarely. When Mary, Queen of Scots married, her husband was declared King by her, even though legally he wasn't called King, and even though SHE was on the throne.
A similar thing also happened in Portugal with Phillip III, except "King Consort" was his official title.
that's why he killed everyone else lol.
The royal bloodline would end with her eventual death, and his status, his power, and his influence. He spent 40 years planning vengeance, don't you think he knows what he's doing and is playing carefully laid plans the right way?
Instead of declaring yourself, you set things up so you're the only logical choice, all others fall far FAR shorter than you could ever be..

I made a necromancer who was only a 15 human who had a 6 Christma and he became a necromancer so the girl he thought was cute would like him
A 40 year old elf is roughly like a 5 year old child in elven culture... they are not even sexually mature before about 100 years or more. No wonder there will be no children. Were he raised among his own people he would still be regarded as a young child.
Let this serve as a warning to those why try to adopt elves and raise them human. They are not human and you trying to force them to be is not an act of kindness. It is, at best, cruelty born of kindness and this is why many half elves stuggle to fit in comfortably among humans and elves, for they are truly stuck in the middle. Too human for the elves, too elven for humans.
Without parents and guardians who go out of their way to understand these children, rather than shape their alien child to be like them, is it really a surprise when theese children turn from them and reject those who would force them to be something they're not?
Elves and half elves are much more interesting if you remember that they are not just humans who live long and like nature. They are native fey. Alien and their own peoples, with lives and views very different to humans. :)
In my humble opinion at least. Homebrew as you wish, but the "18 year old elf out on adventure" really trigger me, both in the "who is letting their toddler pay with weapons"-kind of way and pure disgust and "stop the pedo"-rage when sexual advances are made on them.
Please people... keep your elves legal. Stop the rampant abuse and neglect of elven children! :P
