No religion is a big one too. So much hate caused by it. There are countries Id love to see where they would kill me because of religious bigotry. Other ones just want to deny my rights :/
I pity the Sphinx....gets three nights of great tunes after centuries of silence, and nothing more since then. I guess from that perspective it was only last night the Dead played there, heh heh
These bards played this at all of the three concerts, as the closing piece of Hamza El-Din's sets. One of the greatest moments of my life was had then. Thank you all. Joy!
If I had the chance to one time go back in time to relive one part of my life, this would probably be it! Freaking amazing shit, which would not likely be able to be done now. God Bless the Grateful Dead!
Few take the time to explore the music of the Dead. They were, and are, cultural ambassadors for America's people. They played music from nearly every ethnic group that entered the United States. In that respect, they played "folk", and carried traditions of people who were assimilated into this nation.
Ollin Arageed is a traditional Egyptian marriage song performed once in a person's life while their vows are being exchanged, you can google Hazma al Din, a true master of the oud and a long time inspiration to Mickey :)
Here ya go: Ollin Arageed (Live) If I had the world to give, I'd give it to you Long as you live, would you let it fall, or hold it all in your arms? If I had a song to sing, I'd sing it to you As long as you live, lullaby or maybe a plain serenade Wouldn't you laugh, dance, and cry or be afraid at the change you made I may not have the world to give to you But maybe I have a tune or two Only if you let me be your world Could I ever give this world to you But I will give what love I have to give, I will give what love I have to give, I will give what love I have to give, long as I live. If I had a star to give, I'd give it to you Long as you live, would you have the time To watch it shine, watch it shine Or ask for the moon and heaven too? I'd give it to you. Well maybe I've got no star to spare, or anything fine or even rare, Only if you let me be your world, could I ever give this world to you. Could I ever give this world to you.
Wonders never cease! I too have always wondered about this tune from the first I heard it as a scratchy tape cassette bootleg. I never even thought to look into it in these more technologically enlightened times. Much obliged for your lightshedding
Stare at the center of the screen. Listen to the music. Absorb the vibes. ..And you will be transported back in time, back, back to when Jerry and the Sphinx were together .. like cats under the stars.
You may or may not like the band, but it is hard not to deny the cross cultural significance of them playing there. Garcia's guitar unobtrusively compliments this apparent traditional egyptian song. It is a shame that US foreign policy, on the whole, didn't act in the same accordance in the 33 years since it was played.
I was fortunate enough to hear this song on Tales From The Golden Road on XM satellite radio. What a groovy jam. Music really transcends language and cultural barriers. Simply amazing. Thank you sir! ✌🏻
My first show was 9/2/78 at Giants Stadium. I recall flashing on the diamond vision screens something like "Want to take a trip? Dead in Egypt..." Wish I had been there.
Thank you Bruce P. for sharing this most wonderful music with me so I could lose my mind and body in dance within the drum beats and the notes. It's perfect. I love it, and it will always remind me of you. x
The Grateful Dead transcends the five senses and space and time. During the Egypt concerts the sound men ran a speaker into the pyramid and into the" kings chamber" then they ran a microphone up there too, then back down to the stage monitors. They did this because jerry noticed that the "kings chamber" had very good acoustics and sound qualities.
hamsa is from nubia- and these are guys from his village- in nubian there is no word for "musician"- because everybody plays- they gather in the town square and play- as in everyone in town. this rhythm is the gathering rhythm- the clapping pattern and song are parts of it- and i bet the dancing is just a thing they do when they get caught up in it

"The sweet promised and qualified in the date Kaltalp spirit of my spirit when we received the embrace of the embrace, and joy of happiest person and the heart dancing Nishwan, sweet fountain Hanan intended my heart thirsty and my talk with a bouquet of melodies away from my heart grief and transmit the heart of Nissan, sweet approaching the line I know her walk and her hair whispering with her smile and her heart is the most beautiful of her life, what is the most wonderful of her"
catchy little number........kind of stays in your head after awhile. Would have been interesting if Donna kind of did her vocalizations in there here and there. Not too much...just a little.
This is how civilized peoples could get along...no flags, no politicians....
No religion is a big one too. So much hate caused by it. There are countries Id love to see where they would kill me because of religious bigotry. Other ones just want to deny my rights :/
The Grateful Dead transcend barriers and time and Jerry’s notes just bloom with pure happiness
I do believe the most righteous musical video I have ever witnessed in my lifetime
Jerry's melody is stunningly appropriate. He's was like a tuning rod of music.
lightning nob
Genius of music.
Thank GOD someone recorded this

The face on The Sphinx fit in with the music perfectly.

Amazing pilots into obscurity. Unforgettable experience. To go there again.

Thank you for that history!
Interesting. Thanks! This is my favorite part of the Egypt shows.
I met Hamza several times. A true master, a saint of flooded Nubia. Nice music. Jerry fits in well.
This is what the Grateful Dead was all about: Making magic happen!
This beautiful tune will always be in my heart. Immortal.
This is so cool , just love the rhythm and the band working in and out , how happy they look

Ollin Arageed (Live)
If I had the world to give, I'd give it to you

Wouldn't you laugh, dance, and cry or be afraid at the change you made
I may not have the world to give to you
But maybe I have a tune or two
Only if you let me be your world
Could I ever give this world to you
But I will give what love I have to give,
I will give what love I have to give,
I will give what love I have to give, long as I live.
If I had a star to give, I'd give it to you
Long as you live, would you have the time

Beautiful.
The rhythm is simple, yet sophisticated like a dose of reality from the ancient past for our digital times.

i'm interested in the clapping and dancing arm movements. Does anyone know the origin or back story? It looks like they are rowing down the Nile.
