You are so crazy, your friends were sweating with bikes that are half of the size of yours! You are almost ready to join Pol Tarres in the next Romaniacs!
There's a KTM engineer watching this from their house in Austria, crying tears of joy to see the machine they designed being used properly. Well done mate, excellent review!
That was the hardest terrain I saw being ridden with one of the "adventure bikes". Didnt expect that it was possible with this bike, great riding! Now it would be nice to see you riding the same trails with a Yamaha Tenere 700 so there would be at least one really useful comparison between those two bikes in the internet...
Yeah. Brilliant mate. In all my years, drinking in Bike mags and shows and Top Gear and being totally absorbed in everything motor driven, I've never seen such a functional and useful review of a vehicles abilities beyond its design parameters. Every part of this told me something good about the 790 in the worst terrain. I hope this gets the traction it deserves, and respect to your significant abilities on it, on your first day. Unbelievable.
Wow, brutal trails. What a stud rider. No, I would have turned back early on that ride. I bought one and I’m looking forward to using it down south of the border in the more open terrain. Thanks for the video.
There's ~NO WAY~ that I would've taken my brand new 790 on a single like that. You're a better man than I am. I think you're right by thinking you could use to drop a tooth or two in the front sprocket. From the sound of the motor, I'd probable drop one. Best of luck at Big Bear. Two big "thumbs up" from this Kentucky boy.
Yes, going to go down 1 for sure and see what she does. From there we may go up 1 -2 out back to fine tune it. don't want to loose too much for cursing around on faster roads
That was crazy. AND I know it would have looked/been sooooooooo much steeper than it looks on camera. Can't believe you rode that. I wouldn't/couldn't manage those trails on a DRZ400.
This is exactly why I own a DRZ and an Africa Twin. Best of both worlds. While I'm not a Orange fan, I'm glad you got it, and I think you are really going to enjoy it.
Holy crap! You've got some skills man. I just got one of these. Not sure I'll ever have the balls to ride it like that. I look forward to seeing more of these. Maybe you'll inspire me...
First, I have to say is WOW. I wouldn't believe it, unless I've seen it. I've seen it, but still can't believe it. In the past I watched your videos wanting to get into more off road riding. I live in SoCal and a lot of your riding takes place in the area. I did a lot of research and needed a dual purpose bike. I was wanting a 690 or 701 but made a mistake taking my girl with me. She took a look at the two bikes and ask how was she going to ride on the back. She enjoys riding on my KLR so I went and bought the 790r without doing the proper research. I've owned it for two weeks and a little voice in my head has been telling me I bought the wrong bike. Well my friend you have made me so much happier on my purchase I know I will never be able to ride like you but have seen the capabilities of this bike. Two thumbs up and mad respect to you please keep us posted on the race at Big Bear. I want to go so I can cheer you on!
It's definitely not the easiest bike to take off road but it is very capable with the right skills. I'm taking my girlfriend out on the back as well and ran some fire roads and cruised around and it is the perfect bike for that stuff. You have an awesome machine, enjoy it
Dude, incredible footage. I would never take a bike that heavy in such technical stuff. A 701 maybe, but that ADV is a champ for what you put it thru. Best technical footage I've seen on this bike. Congrats!
It’s unbelievable! The way you get out of these steep rutted trails is unbelievable. Stopping on such steep ground and paddling your way up without flipping the bike is difficult on regular enduro bike, but the 790 does it effortlessly. This video shows the essence of dual sport bikes! I’ve been thinking of getting an adventure bike I can ride 200 miles to some trails, you convinced me to get a 790! You should get a medal from KTM!
Stand-up more. My XR650L with 4.7 gal tank weights in wet at 365. Not quite 450 but I'm 60 and have used it the same as in the video for years. Good job.
Excellent video! Demonstrating the abilities of this bike as you have in these tough riding conditions and showing what it is capable of is a big reason why I bought one. I was looking to replace my DR650 with something more streetable while still being a great dual sport dirt wise. KTM nailed it! Keep up the great vids guys!
I was on those kind of situations with my 1190 (non R) and my heart rate rose and I got adrenaline just from watching. When you're up the hill finally, you feel like you just finished Dakar or so lol :) Love this Video - best greets from near the KTM factory in Austria.
Staring down 46 and I'm not sure that I want to spend much time in like terrain on the 790. Your skill compliments the larger KTM. I'm sticking with my 690R I think. Cheers💯
Insane! Kudos to the rider on such a challenging terrain. But also if ever you needed a demonstration of KTM's off-road credentials, see how elegantly they expressed with the 790 Adventure R in this video. The after market add-ons also made perfect sense on this ride!
That was some serious off roading! I don’t think I’d have the gull to try some of those hills on any bike let alone a 460Lb bike. Most impressive part is the fact your rode that bike all the way there hit all those trails and rode it all the way home. You definitely showed the true definition of adventure bike in this video!
This was the first time I ride it as well. I had never been in an adventure bike before this day. But I ride 300s and 500s constantly on much worse terrain. This was awesome
I also have a 2020 790ADVR with similar upgrades... touratech crash..skid reinforcement. Motoz tractionator desert tires. Anyways, im very interested in following your progress particularly at Big bear, I have confidence in you after seeing your skill!
I love my 790 R and done some difficult trail but have never put it through that gnarly of terrain. That was impressive riding on that size of bike. Great review!
Good job! I'm tired of seeing dudes ride the 790R on the street for an hour and talk about what a poor street bike it is. I've taken mine on some decent off road stuff and I am amazed at the suspensions ability to soak up some nasty shit for such a big bike. I love the 790R, it's great off, and on road, truly the unicorn of adventure bikes!
Man, thats some light enduro trail! Speaks a lot of this bike and your skills that you managed that, when I saw those big ruts I was like theres no way, I would turn around on 200kg~ bike! Crazy shit ; good riding ;
Amazing skills. Was blown away at what you and the 790 can tackle. Thanks for sharing. love the channel. I am sold and anxious to go check out the 790 at my local dealer.
Oh hell yeah, you made that almost look easy... I think most mortals would struggle on them hills on the 2T's y'all kicking arse, but ultra awesome you did all that on the 790!
Funny thing is traction isn't usually the problem it's the deflection and woops where we lose our speed you really gotta hold onto those things. Wow good job big balls man
Totally awesome video, won't lie little bit jealous lol. I have a 701 Husqvarna enduro which I absolutely love for adventure and the 300 xcw for the gnarly stuff but that 790 is sick looking! Nice job on the single track with that big boy! Congrats!
Outstanding! I do a lot of riding in the Rockies and I've been wanting to see what this bike could do on some real trails and tough single track. Most of the other reviews I've seen have been on dirt roads not much more extreme than my driveway with some guy calling everyone "mate". I've been questioning the tanks, everyone says they're fine as they are. After watching this, when I finally break down and get one, I will definitely be adding the larger skid plate. Thanks for the great video.
I know exactly what you mean. Besides the factory KTM guys I haven't actually seen anyone ride one of these 790s yet Had to just pull the trigger and hope she did what I was looking for Thanks for the comment Travis
Only thing holding nthe bike back is tall rocks that are too narrow for the gas tank / bike to fit through. But I guess that's just an adventure bike for ya. I'm used to riding a 300 so this is a beast
Thanks for posting this! I just scored an 890 Rally and was hoping to be able to single track it like my old 990. Looks like I shouldn't have any issues!
Hey man, great video!! Is the first time I see a real life video of what the 790 is capable of. Also words aside for the rider. I imagine that keeping momentum in such a monster is a challenge. Just great!! Regards from Argentina. Luciano
Impressive both the bike and you on oxygen deprivation mode. And considering the traction off, you were aiming for gold, haven't you! So looking forward to more of your craziness on this beauty!
From the sounds of your breathing you could be riding a KLR only you have 4 times more HP and a real suspension. Love what your doing with the 790. Good luck and have fun on your ADV.
Most of the off-road guys seem to run the 140 size. On this wide of a wheel, the 150 might have been better. honest answer is I didn't really do that much research and just went with what it seem like most guys were running
Because when the front tire goes away, you fall instantly Yes the rear tire may spin or slide but it’s not going to put you on the ground if it’s not locked it I like sliding the back end around and a bike that is setup somewhat loose But I need the front locked in
You are a great rider,,, I just purchased the 790R in Colombia, South America. Do you have to put the bike in Rally mode to change the traction control settings?
Wow! By a massively huge country mile, the most arduous and rigorous test of a 790 I've ever seen. Most people rave about it after sliding around on a dirt track. I'm pretty sure you made the designers at KTM wince! Deeply, DEEPLY impresive skills and very brave. I was holding my breath at the drops on some of those off-camber bends! However I'd still argue the more effective comparable choice (in terms of premium quality branding) for such brutal terrain would be a 701LR: substantial weight advantage (less exhausting whenever you drop it) but without losing too much in highway practicality. Nonetheless, I still think you're probably getting way more out of your 790 than 99% of other owners! KTM should be sending you a big discount for this phenomenal demonstration!
My plan with this when I got it was to attend the KTM Rally they have every year. They require a twin Cylinder bike Make sure to check out my Big Bear Run video on the BikeBandit UA-cam channel... It's awesome Posted a couple months back
@@EverySingleSunday Okay; just watched your Big Bear escapade and as a result I must obviously correct the first statement in my original comment! Suffice it to say that Duncan Shepherd probably reflects the thoughts of virtually ALL of your viewers.
You're running a d908rr 140/80 on the stock rim? How is the profile on the wide rim? Are you using a tube? I got one for really cheap and wasn't sure if I wanted to use it or get a 150/70.
Good riding... I have a 1190 and I consider it to be basically a comfortable sport bike that can also blast dirt roads. I don't like taking these big heavy expensive bikes into tight single-track trails... it's too stressful and it just makes me want my 2 stroke. Cool video - thanks for posting! I always like your videos Travis 👍
Awesome. I am just getting my new 790 made up with goodies. Cat. Removal, pegs, protection, air filter, rack etc. Question, did you keep the original front rim and just change to a tube type tire with a tube? And you kept the rear tubeless? Why? I do not want to spend $$$$ to switch out rims, but prefer the off road advantage to tubes
I used the stock wheels front and rear with heavy duty tubes through the stock holes I have another wheel set coming that should be ready next week. If you plan on keeping the stock wheels + tubes... I would drill new holes that are the appropriate size for a standard valve stem and plug up the giant holes that the wheels came with
@@EverySingleSunday You also put a tube in the rear? With the off set value hole? I want to go tube as well, as I spend 90% of my ride in the dirt, long trips as well. Never comfortable without tubes.
Wow, that is some gnarly trails and hill climbs on that 790! Attempt the BBTR DS Hard Ways on the 790 will very likely cost you dearly, IMO. We had a Pro Rally Rider attempt it on a 1090 KTM a few yrs ago and he holed his case on a rocky section, I think White Mt. The biggest/heaviest bikes to "Plaque" our Hardways are the XR400's, XR600's, and XR650R's.
Ya, it's going to be a long day for sure and I doubt I'll finish. But, I really want to try it. 38 Special and the long loose climb to start Malcom Smith are going to be hard if I can't get a clean run at it. But, we'll have to see what happens
the 790 case is protected by the fuel tank so if anything that's what'll get punctured first.. falling in rocks with a heavy bike is a bad move though(as if it was a choice, lol).
This is good content. A more realistic look at normal offroad riding at a park. Lots of reviews are on pretty mild terrain with wide paths that are relatively flat and even. It managed very well...but this type of terrain probably isn't ideal.
Definitely not ideal or recommend for this bike. But it’s fun to try stuff on it that most don’t ride. I have a whole 790/890 playlist with more fun videos of the bikes
Surely can't give you riding tips but couple of things from the 790; traction control 1 feels like no tc on road but it's still ruining your soft sand riding, definitely turn it off for sand rides. And get the power parts tall seat, it's taller but also narrower fits better after excs and not affecting on ground reach. Great riding man!
Haha true your post of last years looked intense but fun. Wish I had a light 450-500 to try it on, currently on a 701 so I may as well try with a 790 that way I can be more proud if I succeed and have more of an excuse when I fail!
@@NikMeyerz I wouldn't want to train anyone on a big bike like this. Skills start on trials bikes or a 250/300. No need to destroy a 16k bike learning new skills. I'm down for a ride sometime though
Very Nice! My 1290 is too big for this stuff or I'm too old. The 300 is perfect and you made it look pretty easy. I see a 790 in my future....riding like you do isn't! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks man. The 790 is a very capable bike and can do all sorts of fun stuff. The 1290 is an awesome bike for touring the country but just doesn't cut it once the trail tightens up. I highly recommend the 790 for someone wanting a bike that can do it all
I'm amazed. You answered two key questions for me. Can it be done? Hell yes! Would I do it? Hell no!! If I had to go with something over 300 lbs I'd take a 690 Enduro only because I'm lazy and less skilled. That was some amazing riding though. I'm glad someone tried it!!
Out here in Southern California, all we have is rocks and desert. This place is pretty mild compared to what we normally ride But then again... I'm usually on a 300
You are so crazy, your friends were sweating with bikes that are half of the size of yours! You are almost ready to join Pol Tarres in the next Romaniacs!

Man, you are rallying that thing. You just sold me on this bike. Keep the videos coming.
Do it. It feels so good off-road and super stable on the highways
One of best videos I’ve seen. Thank You
Great video! I was wondering why you used a 140/80-18 rear tire? It looks like the Dunlop Rally Raid is also available in 150/70-18.
Most of the off-road guys seem to run the 140 size. On this wide of a wheel, the 150 might have been better. honest answer is I didn't really do that much research and just went with what it seem like most guys were running
Cool, thanks!
Excelent job on those trails with the 790. You said "embarrassing." There is nothing to be embarrassed about my friend. Well done.

Thanks so much. Definitely enjoying the bike so far
Superb handling of this big bike on these enduro type trails
Why is the rear tire not as important as the front? I would have thought it would be the opposite because the rear is the drive wheel.
Because when the front tire goes away, you fall instantly
Yes the rear tire may spin or slide but it’s not going to put you on the ground if it’s not locked it
I like sliding the back end around and a bike that is setup somewhat loose
But I need the front locked in
You are a great rider,,, I just purchased the 790R in Colombia, South America. Do you have to put the bike in Rally mode to change the traction control settings?
Yes, Rally mode is the only way to be able to adjust the settings
Hey buddy great riding a single track trail with a big heavy bike. 🎉🥰
They require a twin Cylinder bike
Make sure to check out my Big Bear Run video on the BikeBandit UA-cam channel... It's awesome
Posted a couple months back
@@EverySingleSunday Okay; just watched your Big Bear escapade and as a result I must obviously correct the first statement in my original comment! Suffice it to say that Duncan Shepherd probably reflects the thoughts of virtually ALL of your viewers.
Damn!! With little modifications that KTM was amazing!!
Great riding too!!
It's only gotten better with more work. Loving what she is capable of
good on ya mate, thats what these things r made for, adventures no matter how easy or hard
Much respect bro. I can't believe you took that big bike on those trails. Awesome bike. You can ride bro.
Ya, not my best idea. But it made for some cool content and was kinda fun. Not planning on doing it again anytime soon
What were your traction control settings during this ride did you change them for the big hill or not? Thank you.
I had it in 1 on rally mode. Thts pretty much what I always run
Wow! I really felt bad for you right there around the 11:50 mark. It was hard enough for those on dirt bikes, and here you come with a monstrous 790!
we make it happen.
You're running a d908rr 140/80 on the stock rim? How is the profile on the wide rim? Are you using a tube? I got one for really cheap and wasn't sure if I wanted to use it or get a 150/70.
Profile wasn't bad, definitely better in the 2.5 rim I have now.
I was running a tube with the stock wheel and also with the 2.5 now. I'm a fan of it
Good riding...
Got to be honest, there was about 50% of that trail that I didn't think you'd get up on that bike. Great riding!
You and me both!
I used the stock wheels front and rear with heavy duty tubes through the stock holes
I have another wheel set coming that should be ready next week.
@@zzim2853 yes I did. Read that a few people had decent luck in doing so. If I didn't have new wheels coming, I would have drilled a new hole
Muy buen video, excelente desempeño por trocha, felicitaciones y ojalá hagas mas videos como este!
Dude.... this is amazing.. you did push it to it’s limits...
Mad skills,respect.
Congrats on the success! 👍keep up the gr8 work! Sharing the hell out of your vids!
Thanks so much and we really appreciate it
WOW! Taking a bike that big on those trails! 👍
That's what we do. Push it to the limit
Beautiful bike! I really want to run one up the big bear 200 as well! Killer idea that’s going to be epic!
Grab a bike and lets go. I highly recommend trying to finish it on a regular 450 or 500 first so you know what you're getting into
Haha true your post of last years looked intense but fun. Wish I had a light 450-500 to try it on, currently on a 701 so I may as well try with a 790 that way I can be more proud if I succeed and have more of an excuse when I fail!
@@NikMeyerz take the 701 if you can. That ride is no joke
Train me! Perfect footage for the channel .. “chump to champ” Could start off some paid guided tours/group rides :p
I highly recommend the 790 for someone wanting a bike that can do it all
I'm in love with this bike. Definitely going to be my next upgrade.
Btw you make it look too damn easy. Great video!
I'm amazed. You answered two key questions for me. Can it be done? Hell yes! Would I do it? Hell no!! If I had to go with something over 300 lbs I'd take a 690 Enduro only because I'm lazy and less skilled. That was some amazing riding though. I'm glad someone tried it!!
That was one gnarly trail and those rocks scare the shi* out of me, glad there are none down here in Florida! Great job!
Out here in Southern California, all we have is rocks and desert. This place is pretty mild compared to what we normally ride
But then again... I'm usually on a 300
Compared to a 300 that’s like you riding with a 150lb person on the back, much respect for the way you handled that bike!
Haven’t even started watching yet and I already know I’m going to like seeing you on the bigger bike.
Let me know what you think once you get done watching this one
that skid plat kinda does the job instead of crash bars to some degree ?
Never really understood what crash bars were for. The Skidplate protection is more than I could want
