KTM 790 Adventure in the Balkans. In-depth Review

  • It's time for a new Adventure! The star is the KTM 790 Adventure. Not the R, but the standard version. Is it suitable for a real-life trip? Is it comfortable enough? We tried to find out the answer, so we took this 790 Adventure from Austria to Bucharest via the Balkans.
    Here's the route: Bled, Zeljava Air Base, Zadar Riviera in Croatia, Mostar, Lukomir, Abandoned Railtrack near Sarjevo, Durmitor National Pakr. Just followed the TET but made some detours from time to time.

      Hi, awesome vlog! May I ask, from your experience (DriveMag Riders and other bikers), would Africa Twin be better on those rocky tracks we see starting around 11:00, please? It would be awesome BTW to put into comparison adventures bikes (Yamaha, Honda, KTM, BMW...) on very different tacks in the same vlog. Thanks!

      @Matthew Black From news agency webpage:
      "The 31-year-old motorcyclist, from Otopeni, was on a trip across the country, and finally arrived on a curve, on the afternoon of Friday, July 16, on a provincial road from Şaru Dornei, Suceava.
      The road was wet, and Cristian Predoi lost control of the BMW motorcycle, left the road and hit the car, then was thrown over a fence.
      Although he survived the impact, Predoi began to complain of illness towards the hospital. He died of internal injuries."

    Great video, candid conversation is appreciated. Photography was outstanding, by yourself, amazing. I love KTMs, I have had six, currently have a 690 E. Everyone brags on the R, and I am sure it is nice for and advanced rider that is tall. Real world I think this is the real adventure bike for most of the people, plus you can still touch the ground. Some of your rocky sections would have been tougher because you could only tippy toe on the R so less stable. I am 70, been ridding over 50 years and most of it in the dirt FYI. What I like about this over my 690 is the range and comfort for longer trips. I ride the 690 in 90% dirt. Excellent review and good luck to you.

    i have a 790 sold it after 3000km so much problems, oil leaks, engine cut outs, front brakes shaking... very disapointed... now have a tenere 700... much better more power at the bottum rpm and 0 problems.... this 790 engine is a piece off crap, in the duke ktm already change it for the 890 this means something.. but great video and trip very nice job

    • @DriveMagRiders
      @DriveMagRiders  4 роки тому +1

      Sorry to hear that. None of the problems happened to us in 5,000 km. But congrats for the Tenere 700, it's a great bike! How do you find the suspension? We're curios.

    • @miguelbruno4159
      @miguelbruno4159 4 роки тому +1

      @@DriveMagRiders comparing the suspensions on the tenere with the 790S, I found the ktm better on road, but off road, the tenere's work better for me, they are adjustable and you can find a good compromise, at least to a person weighing 75kg, for a more aggressive off road ridding you will soon find the limits, (same on the 790S) but they performe better than i expected, you can ride fast and confidence on gravel roads, I tested the 790R and no question on the suspensios much but much better then the T7 no comparison at all , the tenere is a lovely machine simple and easy to ride on and off road, if your spirit its adventure and exploring places the yamaha take the job, if you are an agressive rider and you like to puch the limits the husky 901 its the way to go :))) ... i´m look forward to seeing your test on the tenere..

    • @DriveMagRiders
      @DriveMagRiders  4 роки тому

      Miguel Bruno did you adjust the suspension? Or was it the stock setting? I found it a bit harsh.

    • @miguelbruno4159
      @miguelbruno4159 4 роки тому +1

      @@DriveMagRiders
      in the first km yes i found it a bit harsh but after 500/700 km the suspension" satle down" and became more composed and confortable, i already try diferent settings depending on the type off ridding, for my ridding the T7 suspensions are more than enought.. off road i put less rebound on the shock and increase the preload, the rear end became more stable not so bumby, stays more on the stroke suit spot, in curvy roads put more compression on the forks becouse on hard breaking the rear became a bit vague.. its always a compromisse but in a 9.5k bike i think the wardware is very honest... i´m not an expert on off road or in suspension set up, this is just my opinion based on my type off ridding and i´m not a fast rider... but the 790s its stiffer and unconfortable compared with the t7.. so you already tested the T7.. for when this video????

    KTMs are fun for the first 5K miles while they actually work. Then they fall apart and KTM won't stand behind their warranty! Even if they do cover something under warranty your bike ends up in the shop the whole time. No thanks KTM. It doesn't matter how good your bike is on paper. I prefer the bike that doesn't leave me stranded and with a bunch of mechanical work required after every trip! Honda, Yamaha, and BMW are all more reliable. After owning 5 KTMs I'll never own another. Every video review I see on these bikes fails to address reliability.

You say Adventure R would be better off road, which is probably true, but on the other hand how many more times would you drop the bike if you couldn't put your feet down so easily? R is taller and I bet in some cases you'd struggle. Well, I definitely would. Going alone isn't the safest choice, but riding a motorcycle in general is not the safest choise either. Again, respect.

    Congratulations on your channel! I have some doubts regarding the 790: Comparing them to each other, we already know that the R works better in OFF ROAD and the S in ON ROAD, but which one do you think has the greatest advantage? Let me explain: if the R we put a 10 points in OFF and the S a 10 points in ON, how much score do they have in their weakness? ( The R in ON and the S in OFF).
    I have an ATAS 2019 and as you well say when the Indian is not very good, the best arrow he must have :-) so my question is: Does the R also go by road like Africa? (I understand that Off goes better and is easier to drive it) or the 790S goes the same for OFF as Africa? (I understand that it goes better by road than ATAS). By road I mean mountain curves not to travel as a couple. Thanks in advance and Greetings

      @@verdonrocksphotography3510 If its your first bike the gs310 or 390 would be good for you too. These 790s are powerful and heavy machines - only light compared to heavier machines. A smaller bike will get you used to motorcycle dynamics without hurting you too badly.

    Wow, you did that by yourself? Very impressed. I’m an off-road not-even-novice, so my hat is way off to you. You have much more hair on your chest than I do to do that trip! Haha!
    Nice videography and editing, too 👍

    Looks like a great trip. I rode most of those roads with Beach's Motorcycle Adv this spring. Looks like you had better weather, we had snow down to 800 meters while we were in Bled. The KTM looks bad ass also. The middle weight ADV market has a lot of great choice these days.

    Ah good against the Yamaha tenere! Curious about that.
    You listed the other major mid class bikes but not the tiger 800, which won your previous comparisons.
    I got one based on your movies ;)

    I just loved your video, this one it is already at a great level, the drone footage makes the difference. I can imagine the effort you put on taking the video captions. Congratulations !
    I would like to know more detailes regarding the track, perhaps you can place it in the video description.

      Ideal Bike don't have the track, but I can give you the main points on the route. Bled, zeljava air base, zadar riviera in croatia, mostar, lukomir, abandoned railtrack near sarjevo, durmitor. Just followed the tet but made some detours from time to time.
