Traded Tenere 700 for KTM 790 Adventure R

  • This video comes as a result of an earlier video I did with my friend Riley about his KTM 890 Adventure R and why he traded it in for a Tenere 700. Many of the people in the comments were not happy with his decision and felt that the KTM is the better of the two bikes.
So with that in mind I went to my friend Emily, a full time motorcycle journalist for Motorcycle Mojo and we discussed why she did the exact opposite of Riley. And why she felt the KTM was the bike to have in her garage and not the Tenere.

Had a T7 for almost 12k miles - awesome bike. The suspension is sub-par from the factory if you really want to push the bike. I'm 215 pounds and it bottomed way too easy when you were really pushing it off road. It's likely fine for most riders that only want to explore fire roads and gravel, but ask any experienced rider and they will tell you it is lacking compared to the KTM. I put race tech springs in mine and it helped a lot, but still couldn't touch the KTM.
I rented an 890R to ride the WYBDR, and after a week on that bike I got home and sold my T7 and ordered a 2023. Yes, they have the odd nagging issue, but performance-wise there is just no comparison. Quick-Shifter, Cruise, Low-slung tanks - the bike rips both on and off road.
No, the 890R is not made in China. The 890R i made in Austria, and the "re-launced" 790 series (both Duke and ADV R) are made in China by CFMoto. This is KTM's attempt to steal some of the lower priced market.
As with everything on the internet, people will argue all day long about what the right choice is. The question is what is right FOR YOU. If the stock T7 suspension works perfectly for you and you find all else adequate, then guess what, you have a fun and insanely reliable bike on your hands. Congrats! If you want better suspension, better road manners, and over 100hp on tap and are willing to deal with KTMs nagging issues - then congrats, you have a bike that will give you serious smiles per mile.
Look hard enough on here and you will find people that will tell you a TW200 is the ultimate "ADV" bike - what a wonderful world.

So how can the t7 be better if you have to upgrade ,you're fooling yourself

@@cliffordzehmke5650 Well Clifford, that's just the thing - I never said the T7 was better nor worse. The message I was trying to convey was that typically there is no definitive right or wrong answer. The "right" bike to choose will depend upon the rider skill, what terrain they want to ride, how much they are willing to spend on maintenance, etc.
For "ME" I had the T7, but decided I liked the KTM more for "MY" purposes. Thus, I sold the T7 and ordered a new 890R.
IF you are looking for a black and white answer here, you won't get it from me on this topic. Did you even read what I wrote above? At what point did I say the T7 was "better"?
      Good day, sir.

Great video! Love my 790. Their Achilles heal however is the plastic L shaped fitting that connects the fuel line to the bottom of the fuel pump. I was able to break this by dropping the bike on a water bar mid hill climb and it left me stranded in the woods. A must for these bikes is either a skid plate that covers high on the tank (like AXP) or the aluminum replacement fitting and guard that Rottweiler makes. Tank itself is going strong through

I pined for a T7 when they teased it several years back to replace my DR650. Then KTM came out with the 790 R. The T7 suddenly became not much of an upgrade performance wise to my modded DR but the KTM was so much more. I'm approaching 20 K miles on my 2020 and it has been stone reliable. The offroad performance is fantastic and on road it rips for 'only' a 790. No regrets! Only hope it remains reliable for years to come. Continued luck and enjoyment with yours!

I'm a big big KTM fan, but something a bit overlooked if you are thinking about buying a newer 890 or find a used 790 is that they changed the slip mode between the models. On the 790 when you put it in slip 1 it's about the same as slip 3-4 on the 890. I find riding in sand on my 790 I actually stop and turn the slip completely off but when riding 890s in sand I can keep it on slip 1 and get enough push on the rear.
I have a short video on my channel showing me going up a sand hill in 2nd gear with 1 slip on the 790 and you can hear how much the slip is pushing back.

The KTM 790/890 is a brilliant design, great suspension and weight distribution. Had the T7 for 8mths, great engine but top heavy, suspension needed alot of work. I would buy the 790 in a heartbeat but the complexity worries me. Reliability has been a concern, camshaft wear notably. This is an adventure bike, if reliability is in question then the concept of real adventure is compromised. The 690 although not as highway capable is now my choice, in the dirt it will be superior to the 790. Great looking bike those graphics really set it off.

Not saying it’s not a good bike . It is but it’s mechanic friendly .

Excellent story telling :) Reliability of T7 is better than KTM´s, Yamaha motor produced in Japan but maybe not assembled in Japan. Will see how KTM´s reliability is in new 790. April Tuareg has also reliability issues, then again there is not going to be a perfect bike. I agree about height and top heaviness. Will wait for some time before purchasing new model of any bike.

The KTM is a great bike, except...once your camshafts, valves and followers fail at low km you'll struggle to trust it to carry you out in the wilderness.
When twice as many services as the owner's manual calls for equals complete head rebuild with nasty cam at 31,000km you can no longer trust it.
There are so many cases now its absurd, I wont own another KTM, nor would I suggest anyone deliberately put yourself through having KTM treat you like using their bike for its intended purpose is somehow detrimental to their bike.

Some of my research states that the 790 production actually started in China in 2019/2020 and some states that it will start in 2023. That being said they have a history of reliability problems which will only get worse with the move to China. And for $15 to $16 k??? keep me posted. I personally have had very good luck with my Aprilia Tuono in the past and will be getting a 660 Tuareg. I like the intake for the air box being clear up above the steering head, Down in Central America There are many rivers that will swamp a under seat intake.
